In Bordeaux downtown there's a square - place de la bourse - where children usually have fun on the fountain, called "miroir d'eau" - the "water mirror". Stay five minutes and you'll see a real show. People any age gets in. Children, toddler, adults, and by the way, if you're lucky, it may happen you'll see some nice girl modeling.
22 March 2016 - We are deeply shocked by the series of atacks in Brussels that killed so many people and left many others injured.

A tourist cliche I know, but a wonderful place.
Back from a 10 day trip to the southwest of France, stopping in the Languedoc for a week and 3 days in Bordeaux. Lots of pictures taken, expect plenty more cliches.

The beauty of Place de la Bourse becomes dreamlike when it is reflected in “le miroir d’eau”, the reflecting pool. This 130 meter long and 42 meter wide set of granite slabs is the largest reflecting pool in the world. Conceived by the landscape architect Michel Corajoud, and developed by the fountain expert J. M. Llorca, it was, with “le jardin des lumières” (the garden of lights) and the skate park, one of the main elements of Bordeaux‘s quayside recent redevelopment. “Le miroir d’eau” works according to a specific cycle. When the slabs are are almost dry, it looks like a huge slate. A few minutes later, the fountain mecanism produces plumes of mist, creating a thick fog turning the quay in a fairyland. When the fog disappears, the 3 450 square metres of granite are covered with 2 centimeters of a cristal clear water, becoming a slightly undulating twin of “Place de la Bourse”. According to J. M. Llorca, the water mirror was inspired by the regular flooding of Saint Mark’s Square in Venice. This spectacular fountain has some noteworthy technical features:
• the sides of the slate are slightly more hollow than its center in order to avoid waves.
• the water that does not evaporate is collected and processed by an impressive device buried under the slabs, to ensure hygiene and economy.
• the mecanism is shut down during winter, to avoid the damage caused by the frost.

Brussels, rainbow hanging over the Bourse
The Brussels Stock Exchange (French: Bourse de Bruxelles, Dutch: Beurs van Brussel), abbreviated to BSE, was founded in Brussels, Belgium, by decree of Napoleon in 1801. In 2002, the BSE merged with the Amsterdam, Lisbon and Paris stock exchanges into Euronext N.V., renaming the BSE Euronext Brussels. The most well known stock market index on the BSE is the BEL20.
The stock exchange building does not have a distinct name, though it is usually called the Palais de la Bourse in French or Beurspaleis in Dutch (or simply Bourse/Beurs). It is located on Boulevard Anspach/Anspachlaan, and is the namesake of the Place de la Bourse/Beursplein, which is, after the Grand Place, the second most important square in Brussels.
The eclectic building mixes borrowings from the neo-Renaissance and Second Empire architectural styles. It has an abundance of ornaments and sculptures, created by famous artists, including the brothers Jacques and Jean-Joseph Jacquet, the French sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and his then-assistant Auguste Rodin. Some of the best examples are the group of four allegorical figures on the facade by Guillaume de Groot, symbolising Art, Agriculture, Industry and Science, as well as the friezes by Carrier-Belleuse, in which Rodin may have contributed.
The two monumental lion sculptures by Jacquet on each side of the main entrance's staircase (one with its head facing up, the other curved back) represent the two stock market trends (akin to the famous "bull and bear" metaphor), as well as the Belgian Nation.

This water mirror covers a massive 3450 m², which makes it the largest water mirror in the world! The mirror was built in 2006 by the fountain specialist Jean-Max Llorca. The area is covered with a thin layer of water, which gives it its mirroring effect. The fountain system can also create a fog effect, reaching as high up as two meters.

As you may be able to tell from the pool of water to the left of the fountain, it was very windy when I took this photo, and the sun was quite high in the sky, so I couldn't get the shot I would have liked ...
This fountain, designed and sculpted by Visconti and poured by Gumery et Jouandot, represents the three daughters of the Greek God Zeus, Aglaé, Euphrosyne and Thalie. Regal during the day against the elegant period buildings built of beautiful creamy-gold stone, it is even more stunning at night when it is illuminated.
