Caffeine molecule graphic on the wall of the Active Study Room (aka The Think Tank) in Galbraith Hall at UC San Diego.

Apparently, pure caffeine is available in powdered form as a dietary supplement (?!) and is extremely dangerous in that state. One teaspoon packs the same punch as about 25 cups (roughly 1.2 gallons or 4.4 liters) of coffee and, sadly, people have died as a result of misusing the product. Best to stick to no more than four cups of coffee a day, if you can handle it.

i may not have cooking gas, but I can have my PB&J in any shape. Apple for dinner tonight.

Recipe to follow:

4 cups cake flour

4 tsp baking powder

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

2 Tbsp ground ginger

21/2 tsp cinnamon

1 cup vegetable oil

2 cups soy kremer

1 cups molasses

2 cups brown sugar

2 Tbsp white vinegar

1.5 cups shredded carrots

Sift dry together; Combine wet and mix with the dry then fold in the carrots.

Place in greased baking pans of your choice and bake 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees.

Split in half or top with whipped soy or nut kreme.

Vodka, tomato juice plus a dash of tabasco and Worcestershire sauce and you have the perfect brunch! It's interesting to see how Green Mark vodka is gaining an increasing share of the UK market and while it lacks any flash advertising campaigns it has two things in its favour: quality and price; a winning combination?

Need a pickmeup.

Old photo from a couple months ago, cleaning out folders and found it. Thought I might give it a whirl in photoshop.

I've challenged myself to get my portraits taken with my son in September when he turns two. There are so few of him and I. But it's still odd to not be behind the camera.

1: tea

2: crumpets

3: melty butter

after a cold and windy walk home from work (my chauffeur is out of town - how inconvenient!) this is just the pick-me-up needed. it's now pelting it down outside, and is even windier than it was earlier, but i care not! sometimes, just sometimes, it's good to be english :)

The first leg of our trip we stayed with our dear friend Christine in her apartment on Second Ave/4th Street in Manhattan, smack in the middle of the old 'Lower East Side": not only the neighborhood that provided Luz with her earliest childhood memories -having lived there between the ages of 3 and 10 years oldm - but also the apartment I shared with Christine for a while when I worked in NYC in the early eighties.

On our first day we got up extremely early (yes, jet lag, of course...) and walked the streets between 6 and 8 AM. Needless to say we found many changes since we last roamed these streets 5 years ago. Brightly colored fun storefronts like this one, however, could always be found in this artsy fartsy area... The wallpainting reminds us of pre 9/11 days while the name of the cafe reinforces New York's reputation for amoral and sinful fun...

The Postcard

An Inter-Art Comique Series postcard that was printed in England and published in London. The artwork was by C.

The card was posted using a 2d. stamp in Shanklin, Isle-of-Wight on Monday the 7th. July 1952 to:

Mr. G. Blackford,

'Trevone',

Fifth Road,

Newbury,

Berks.

The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:

"Sunday.

Dear Gordon,

We are having a fine

time here. Guess you

are looking forward

to your holiday.

Don't work too hard.

Kindest regards to

Mrs. Blackford.

Cheerio from

Vic."

The Blue Angels

So what else happened on the day that Vic posted the card to Gordon?

Well, on the 7th. July 1952, Lt. Bud Wood of the Blue Angels was killed when his F9F-5 Panther collided with another Panther jet during a demonstration in Corpus Christi, Texas. The team resumed performances two weeks later.

The Blue Angels is a flight demonstration squadron of the United States Navy. Formed in 1946, the unit is the second oldest formal aerobatic team in the world, after the French Patrouille de France formed in 1931. The team, composed of six Navy and one Marine Corps demonstration pilot, currently fly Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornets.

The Blue Angels typically perform aerial displays in at least 60 shows annually at 30 locations throughout the United States, and two shows at one location in Canada.

The "Blues" still employ many of the same practices and techniques used in the inaugural 1946 season. An estimated 11 million spectators view the squadron during air shows from March through November each year.

Members of the Blue Angels team also visit more than 50,000 people in schools, hospitals, and community functions at air show cities. Since 1946, the Blue Angels have flown for more than 505 million spectators.

As of November 2011, the Blue Angels received $37 million annually from the annual Department of Defense budget.

Blue Angel Deaths

As well as Bud Wood, the following 20 members of the Blue Angels have died since 1946 while performing their duties:

-- Lt. Ross "Robby" Robinson – 29th. September 1946: killed during a performance when a wingtip broke off his F8F-1 Bearcat, sending him into an unrecoverable spin.

-- Cmdr. Robert Nicholls Glasgow – 14th. October 1958: died during an orientation flight just days after reporting for duty as the new Blue Angels leader.

-- Lt. Anton M. Campanella – 14th. June 1960: killed flying a Grumman F-11A Tiger that crashed into the water near Fort Morgan, Alabama during a test flight.

-- Lt. George L. Neale – 15th. March 1964: killed during an attempted emergency landing at Apalach Airport near Apalachicola, Florida. Lt. Neale's F-11A Tiger had experienced mechanical difficulties during a flight from West Palm Beach. Failing to reach the airport, he ejected from the aircraft on final approach, but his parachute did not have sufficient time to fully deploy.

-- Lt. Cmdr. Dick Oliver – 2nd. September 1966: crashed his F-11A Tiger and was killed at the Canadian International Air Show in Toronto.

-- Lt Frank Gallagher – 1st. February 1967: killed when his F-11A Tiger stalled during a practice Half Cuban Eight maneuver and spun into the ground.

-- Capt. Ronald Thompson – 18th. February 1967: killed when his F-11A Tiger struck the ground during a practice formation loop.

-- Lt. Bill Worley – 14th. January 1968: killed when his Tiger crashed during a practice double Immelmann.

-- Lt. Larry Watters – 14th. February 1972: killed when his F-4J Phantom II struck the ground, upright, while practicing inverted flight, during winter training at NAF El Centro.

-- Lt. Cmdr. Skip Umstead (Team Leader), Capt. Mike Murphy, and ADJ1 Ron Thomas (Crew Chief) – 26th. July 1973: all three were killed in a mid-air collision between two Phantoms over Lakehurst, New Jersey, during an arrival practice. The rest of the season was cancelled after this incident.

-- Lt. Nile Kraft – 22nd. February 1977: killed when his Skyhawk struck the ground during practice.

-- Lt. Michael Curtin – 8th. November 1978: one of the solo Skyhawks struck the ground after low roll during arrival maneuvers at Naval Air Station Miramar, and Curtin was killed.

-- Lt. Cmdr Stu Powrie – 22nd. February 1982: killed when his Skyhawk struck the ground during winter training at Naval Air Facility El Centro, California, just after a dirty loop.

-- Lt. Cmdr. Mike Gershon – 13th. July 1985: his Skyhawk collided with Lt. Andy Caputi during a show at Niagara Falls. Gershon was killed, although Caputi ejected and parachuted to safety.

-- Lt. Cmdr. Kieron O'Connor and Lt. Kevin Colling – 28th. October 1999: flying in the back seat and front seat of a Hornet, both were killed after striking the ground during circle and arrival maneuvers in Valdosta, Georgia.

-- Lt. Cmdr. Kevin J. Davis – 21st. April 2007: crashed his Hornet near the end of an airshow in Beaufort, South Carolina, and was killed.

-- Capt. Jeff Kuss – 2nd. June 2016: died just after takeoff while performing the Split-S maneuver in his F/A-18 Hornet during a practice run for The Great Tennessee Air Show in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Other Blue Angel Incidents

Other unanticipated but non-fatal incidents include:

-- Lt. John R. Dewenter – 2nd. August 1958: landed wheels up at Buffalo Niagara International Airport after experiencing engine troubles during a show in Clarence, New York. The Grumman F-11 Tiger landed on Runway 23, but exited the airport, coming to rest in the intersection of Genesee Street and Dick Road, nearly hitting a filling station. Lt. Dewenter was uninjured, but the plane was a total loss.

-- Lt. Ernie Christensen – 30th. August 1970: belly-landed his F-4J Phantom at The Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, after he inadvertently left the landing gear in the up position. He ejected safely, while the aircraft slid off the runway.

-- Cmdr. Harley Hall – 4th. June 1971: safely ejected after his F-4J Phantom jet caught fire during practice over NAS Quonset Point in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and crashed in Narragansett Bay.

-- Capt. John Fogg, Lt. Marlin Wiita, and Lt. Cmdr. Don Bentley – 8th. March 1973: all three survived a multi-aircraft mid-air collision during practice over Superstition Mountain, near El Centro, California.

-- Lt. Jim Ross – April 1980: unhurt when his Skyhawk suffered a fuel line fire during a show at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico. Lt. Ross stayed with the plane and landed, leaving the end of the runway and rolling into the woods after a total hydraulic failure upon landing.

-- Lt. Dave Anderson – 12th. February 1987: ejected from his Hornet after a dual engine flame-out during practice near El Centro, California.

-- Marine Corps Maj. Charles Moseley and Cmdr. Pat Moneymaker – 23rd. January 1990: their Blue Angel Hornets suffered a mid-air collision during a practice at El Centro. Moseley ejected safely and Moneymaker was able to land his airplane, which then required a complete right wing replacement.

-- Lt. Ted Steelman – 1st. December 2004: ejected from his F/A-18 approximately one mile off Perdido Key after his aircraft struck the water, suffering catastrophic engine and structural damage. Ted suffered minor injuries.

Everytime I go into a supermarket I stop at the magazine shelf to check out the daily life gossip mag front covers. They really are unbelieveable!

Such headlines as:

"Escaped from the jaws of DEATH"

and

"My lips are made from my... VAGINA"

never cease to amaze me. Even the typography and layout with crappy little arrows pointing at exploding breasts are comical.

One day, my pedigree chums, this will be considered art.

Several operators are currently experimenting with demand responsive services which sit somewhere between 'normal' scheduled bus routes and taxis. The Oxford Bus Company launched Pick Me Up in 2018 originally using 6 all Mercedes-Benz Sprinters although 10 are currently in use offering demand responsive journey's via an App across Eastern Oxford.

RF68FLX (978) is one of two EVM Cityline converted Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 516CDI's bought in late 2018 to cope with increased demand and is seen here passing down a busy St Aldate's in Oxford city centre. However, whether such services remain a viable long term proposition remains to be seen.

A glass of KahlĂșa, some fresh cream and strawberries...nice.

I have, courtesy of our unprecedented cold snap, a dose of Flu, this was a little indulgence to cheer me up.

I'm stuck here in a town and body that doesn't fit to my shape right. These people get me down telling me that they are better and I don't even know any single things about how they feel. More importantly they know that they have better things to do then worry about me. I'm down, again! Get me out of this month. My luck hasn't been standing across from me lately, it's been treating all the other patients. . . and it knows I'm due for some good luck, but there's other people with lives so horrible I wouldn't even be able to survive in. I know, I've been patient though, really. I need love from you. I'm not trying to get everybody down around me. I'm not even sad, when things are going to the right way I'm fine. I can't help that I'm struggling with ripping pages apart. I can't help that I have a conscience that erupts every other full moon. I've got things to do and I don't want anything but a grin that I can relate to.

Think of gingerbread and carrot cake with whipped soy kreme.

That is it.

This design was for the Puck Collective pitch at Pick Me Up London.

We each produced a couple of designs to be printed by Ditto press on their Risograph printer. This is the original file but I will post some photos from the show soon. The prints will also be available on the Puck website for sale soon.

More pictures of the work I did with No Brow. The characters are based on a screen printed illustration by French artist Karine Bernadou that appears in the latest issue of No Brow.
