I was wondering why I hadn't seen many Goldfinches around when all of a sudden this little one appeared out of nowhere yesterday. Too darn cute isn't it? I love to see these little beauties out and about..They are a real pickmeup if you ask me!! :)

"This handsome little finch, the state bird of New Jersey, Iowa, and Washington, is welcome and common at feeders, where it takes primarily sunflower and nyjer. Goldfinches often flock with Pine Siskins and Common Redpolls. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white. Females and all winter birds are more dull but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy."

Enjoy!!

Pick-Me-Up - ''A Literary and Artistic Tonic for the Mind' - was a weekly magazine published in the 1890s. It printed funny stories, music-hall and theatre reviews, and lots of slightly risqué drawings of girls with unfeasibly tiny waists and conker-crushing thighs. It's fairly rare, but I've collected a few volumes over the years. As far as I know, this is the first modern outing for this picture.

As a downmarket - and much funnier - rival to Punch, Pick-Me-Up was unlikely to have been read by Lieutenant Adair's fellow officers. One has to wonder, therefore, if he was deliberately displaying his proclivities for the benefit of the Other Ranks.

I mean, Pembroke Dock? In winter? A girl's going to need Defensible Barracks.
