Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have developed state-of-the-art techniques that will lead to significant improvements in the performance of superconducting niobium cavities. Argonne's superconducting spoke cavities can operate at lower temperatures and at higher magnetic fields than previous designs, translating into a potential savings in the cost of a heavy-ion linear accelerator. A computer display emits linearly polarized light. This plastic glass is set in front of a white screen and photographed through a polarizing filter, set at a right angle to the display's polarization direction. Notice that the display appears quite black, even though it is turned on.
Discovery of the top quark, which for nearly two decades had been the last and crucial missing piece in the scientific picture of matter, was announced on March 2, 1995 by two teams of scientists at Fermilab's Tevatron collider. The top quark is one of the six quarks predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics and one of the fundamental building blocks of matter.

This poorly composed photo is a fine example of polarisation.
Over my lens is a homemade polarising filter which polarises in a single direction. It has been adjusted to block the light being emitted from the LCD, as it emits light of a single polarisation.
Then these 3D (polarised) glass from Disney movies (mature) are place between the screen and my lens. It polarises the polarised light in a different direction to what the polarised lens is blocking, enabling me to see it!

Inside the Elliot Building at UVic, one of the first four campus buildings constructed in the early 1960s... and I don't think this has ever been renovated. I love the sign that looks to be hand-painted.

An interview with second year undergraduate student Brian Cox in the University of Manchester's physics department magazine (Relatively Speaking) in 1994. The photo was taken on April 14 2012 but I marked it with the rough publication date of the magazine instead.
After this article was written Brian went on to do a PhD and worked on various high-energy particle physics experiments including the LHC at CERN. In 2008 he was made Professor at the University of Manchester. As well as working on particle physics experiments and teaching undergrads, Brian makes great TV shows that communicate astronomy and physics to millions of people in the UK.

Here is the photodiode. It has a glass window on it which we need to remove in order to prevent scattered light, parasitic interferometers, etc.
