“Heart Shaped Diffusion Pattern”
This photograph shows the diffusion pattern of blue food coloring in a 1000 ml volumetric flask. Diffusion occurs as an object of high concentration moves to an area of low concentration. In this case, the food coloring is highly concentrated and will move to the areas of low concentration (clear water where there is no dye). The dye, which is only a few drops initially, will gradually spread through the water until it is evenly dispersed. This occurs spontaneously, with no energy input. In this case, the diffusion pattern has formed the shape of a heart in the upper area of the flask. The rounded shape of the glass causes it to act as a convex (or converging) lens. If you look at the right side of the flask, you can see that the company name, Kimax, and the volume label been distorted through the lens. The image of the words is magnified, reversed, and appears on the opposite side of the flask (the actual label is obscured by the blue dye from this angle).

The SLAC Photowalk took a group of photographers behind the scenes to photograph SLAC's world-class science facilities, including the world's longest linear accelerator, the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL). The three winning photos will compete in the Global Physics Photowalk against photos taken at other scientific labs around the world. SLAC also invited a group of employees to participate in the photowalk event and though not eligible for the global competition, three photos will be chosen as staff winners.
All winners will be announced Monday, August 27, 2018.
