A neutron diffraction image giving evidence for the new magnetic phase in iron-based superconductors discovered by Argonne scientists. It shows the scattering results from a sample of barium iron arsenide with sodium ions added to 24% of the barium sites. Nematic order sets in below 90 K (about -300°F), but four-fold symmetry is restored below 40 K (-387°F). The resulting atomic and magnetic structures are illustrated in the figure on the right, in which the blue spheres represent iron atoms and the red arrows show the direction of their magnetic moments.
More details
Neutron diffraction from a polycrystalline sample of BaFe2As2 with sodium doped onto 24% of the barium sites. The panels show how the intensity of three diffraction peaks vary with temperature as the atomic and magnetic structures change. These structures are shown schematically on the right, with the blue balls representing iron atoms and the red arrows the direction of their magnetic moments.
The first peak, labelled (112), is determined by the Fe-Fe bond lengths, which split into two when nematic order is established at TN, but become equal again when nematic order is suppressed below Tr. The second peak, labelled (½½3), shows the onset at TN of magnetic order with two-fold symmetry, while the third peak, labelled (½½1), shows that the magnetic moments are reoriented below Tr to restore four-fold symmetry. The measurements show that magnetic order coexists with superconductivity below Tc.).

The Physics Building is where I spent the majority of my many years at the university. The original building, on the left, was completed in 1922. The 1967 addition on the right is where most classrooms, laboratories and lecture theatres are now located. The Physics addition was built in the same Modernist, near-windowless style as the Thorvaldson addition. It was also built to support an additional two floors for future expansion.

I always like the fact that wine glasses make things turn upside down when you look through them. Having studied a lot of physics at school and uni and also a lasers and optics course at uni I feel I really should be able to know or at least figure out why this happens, but alas I can't really be bothered thinking about that when a) I can photograph it and b) I can drink the contents of the wine glass!
This photo shows two things: 1. This fountain was designed with physics in mind; the shape of the walls causes a standing wave to develop down the fountain invoking a rhythmic dance of the water. 2. Those were the group of tourists that we were forced to walk with (note that all of my other photos painstakingly did NOT show any of them).
A Knox College student in the course Modern Physics, measuring the charge-mass ratio of the electron, using a glass chamber, surrounded by ring-shaped magnetic Helmholtz coils. In the Kennedy Space Center's Operations and Support Building II, Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, members of the media participate in a prelaunch mission briefing on NASA's Parker Solar Probe. Speaking to the media is Nicky Fox, Parker Solar Probe project scientist, Johnson Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. The Parker Solar Probe will lift off on a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The spacecraft was built by Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Maryland. The mission will perform the closest-ever observations of a star when it travels through the Sun's atmosphere, called the corona. My physics class were feeling unmotivated to revise for their upcoming Intermediate2 exam. So I gave them all a banana and challenged them to write as many physics equations on them as possible. I think we got 23 on one.

Each team had to design and construct a paper roller coaster. Each coaster had to include a camelback, a loop, a wide turn, and a funnel. A marble would be dropped down each coaster. The coaster had to be free-standing and stable and the marble had to stay in the track. After completion, various measurements and physics calculations needed to be made and physics questions answered about each roller coaster.

Proof of the Nonlocality of a Light Cone’s Surface:
Consider a pair of entangled photons which travel in opposite directions from the origin in the x1, x2 plane.
No matter how far apart they travel, they will remain entangled, meaning that their two positions will define a nonlocality.
Now consider numerous entangled pairs of photons, wherein the two photons in each pair travel away from the origin in opposite directions.
Together, the positions of the photons in all the entangled pairs of photons will by and by define a circle of nonlocality as the number of pairs of photons approaches infinity.
Now consider a third axis which is time. Together, the positions of the photons in all the entangled pairs of photons will define a conical surface of nonlocality.
Ergo, the surface of a light cone is a nonlocality.
The surface of a light cone is thus nonlocal.

(Summer 2005) The only thing I got out of Physics were silly ideas for t-shirts.
But no really, I did learn a lot.
Dissecting the design: Heather's hand in a box with the resistor symbol and Ohm's law solving for resistance. Hence the caption... I may have been reaching on this one... but hey, at least I got a shirt out of it.
Fun fact: My first shirt not using the "poor-girl's" silkscreening method we learned in high school studio art class. I stenciled.
