In the Kennedy Space Center's Operations and Support Building II, Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, members of the news and social media participate in a prelaunch mission briefing on NASA's Parker Solar Probe. Briefing participants from left are: Nicky Fox, Parker Solar Probe project scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Dr. Eugene Parker, a pioneer in heliophysics and S. Chandrasekhar distinguished service professor emeritus for the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. This is the first NASA mission named for a living person. The Parker Solar Probe is designed to provide key observations on his groundbreaking theories about the Sun. Lift off atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket will take place from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The spacecraft was built by Applied Physics Laboratory of Johns Hopkins University in Laurel, Maryland. The mission will perform the closest-ever observations of a star when it travels through the Sun's atmosphere, called the corona. The probe will rely on measurements and imaging to revolutionize our understanding of the corona and the Sun-Earth connection.

The Physics Building is where I spent the majority of my many years at the university. The original building, on the left, was completed in 1922. The 1967 addition on the right is where most classrooms, laboratories and lecture theatres are now located. The Physics addition was built in the same Modernist, near-windowless style as the Thorvaldson addition. It was also built to support an additional two floors for future expansion.

I'm not sure what they were arguing about, but I think it was about physics and it got pretty heated.

Some of my old school exercise books - or at least the covers (the contents haven't survived).

None of the exercise books from the first two forms have survived, so this is the earliest. Rather bizarre in view of the fact I really didn't like Physics much and dropped it at the end of the year. Mr Sutton's deadpan intonation of "copper calorimeter can" which a few of us tried to mimic (out of earshot!) is probably what I remember best about it!

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.

This photo shows two things: 1. This fountain was designed with physics in mind; the shape of the walls causes a standing wave to develop down the fountain invoking a rhythmic dance of the water. 2. Those were the group of tourists that we were forced to walk with (note that all of my other photos painstakingly did NOT show any of them).

Photo of the physics building at the Universiy of Minnesota. All sorts of adjustments here. I liked the moody feel of the dark sepia and kept the holga script adjustment just on the sky.

Research has shown that protons and neutrons that have briefly paired up in the nucleus have higher-average momentum, which allows a greater fraction of the protons than neutrons to have high momentum in relatively neutron-rich nuclei, such as carbon, aluminum, iron and lead. This result is contrary to long-accepted theories large nuclei and has implications for ultra-cold atomic gas systems and neutron stars.

This is a sample of the kind of text I typed in this 400-page textbook written by my favorite boss, F. Reif, Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. I typed this on a TYPEWRITER. Twice.

My physics class were feeling unmotivated to revise for their upcoming Intermediate2 exam. So I gave them all a banana and challenged them to write as many physics equations on them as possible. I think we got 23 on one.

Each team had to design and construct a paper roller coaster. Each coaster had to include a camelback, a loop, a wide turn, and a funnel. A marble would be dropped down each coaster. The coaster had to be free-standing and stable and the marble had to stay in the track. After completion, various measurements and physics calculations needed to be made and physics questions answered about each roller coaster.

(Summer 2005) The only thing I got out of Physics were silly ideas for t-shirts.

But no really, I did learn a lot.

Dissecting the design: Heather's hand in a box with the resistor symbol and Ohm's law solving for resistance. Hence the caption... I may have been reaching on this one... but hey, at least I got a shirt out of it.

Fun fact: My first shirt not using the "poor-girl's" silkscreening method we learned in high school studio art class. I stenciled.

Second electron gun. The physics is the same as before: The element emits electrons (blue ring) which are curved in a magnetic field, which is generated by the copper ring. The difference in colour between this and the other electron gun is due to a different gas inside the sphere.
