Um, mine doesn't look so good...I got this book when my dad (physics prof for 39 years) had retired and was clearing out his office.

Also known as "the blue one"

LANCASTER UNIVERSITY, PHYSICS

My first photo project of the year. Shows that image distances can differ from object distances (all Lego dudes are same distance from camera but all can not be focused at once). Simple idea which will crush Ben on contest day

Particle physics notes and calculations scribbled on a chalkboard.

This is the illustrious Duke University Physics building. It was built in 1950s in the popular "ugly brick and cement" style. Googlemapped location.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,

For Summer has o'er-brimm'd their clammy cells. --To Autumn. by John Keats

This is a test shot using the stroboscopic mode of my new Canon Speedlite 580EX II flash. This is a one second exposure with the flash firing fifteen times at a rate of thirty flashes per second (30Hz) at 1/128th of maximum power.

Yes, this does effectively make this a 1/2 second exposure, I screwed up and forget to change the flash count when I changed the flash speed.

This has undergone a fair amount of work in Photoshop to remove wrinkles in the black cloth background, etc. I'm happy with it as a first experiment, but I hope to do better in the future.

Siuhabbat Dehkonova, teacher of physics at the vocational school no 16 in Osh, Kyrgyzstan. This is her first work after she graduated studies. She says it is difficult to teach physics without student handbooks. Before, Kyrgyz schools relied on Russian books. After twenty years of independence, less and less students speak Russian. Yet, there are few textbooks in Kyrgyz language.

The Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP), led by Saul Perlmutter (above) is conducting a search for very distant Type Ia supernovae using a camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. The SCP developed key analytic techniques that, by interpreting supernova measurements, could be used to determine the cause of the expansion rate of the universe.

High energy physics is challenged by unresolved mysteries—from missing particles predicted by the standard model to the 95% of the missing mass in the universe. To fulfill these missions, particle accelerators rely on continuously increasing acceleration gradients, now beyond the actual technology.

The Department of Energy’s Office of High Energy Physics recently awarded Argonne $3.3 million to improve the performance of superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities. The uniqueness of Argonne’s approach is to combine a recent synthesis technique, which combines atomic layer deposition with an original solution to improve and/or cure radio frequency niobium cavities: a multilayer structure composed of superconducting-insulating films synthesized on the inside walls of the cavity. This effort is being developed in close collaboration between Argonne’s High Energy Physics, Energy Systems and Materials Science divisions, as well as Jefferson Lab, Fermilab, Illinois Institute of Technology, and several other universities.

We took a string of Christmas lights and started to swing it around! The picture was taken with an exposure time of 1 second.

This is one of the modes of vibration of the string ("mode of vibration" just means style or way of vibrating). What other modes are possible on a string fixed at both ends?

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics is a basic research centre dedicated to exploring the world around us at its most fundamental level. It began in the summer of 1999 when Mike Lazaridis, founder of Research in Motion and the innovator who was instrumental in launching the smart phone revolution, found himself in a position to help foster research and innovation in Canada by establishing a world-class institute devoted to theoretical physics.

Research

Since research operations began in the fall of 2001, the Institute has grown to include over 80 resident researchers who are involved in day-to-day operations. Additionally, the vigorous Visitor Program has enabled PI to host hundreds of international researchers each year for collaborations and workshops. The current groups involved with cross-disciplinary research include Condensed Matter, Cosmology & Gravitation, Particle Physics, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Information Theory, Superstring Theory and related areas.

Training

Among activities that help develop future generations of scientists, is the innovative Perimeter Scholars International. This research training program exposes rising talent from around the world to the full spectrum of theoretical physics, bringing them rapidly to the leading edge of current research.

Outreach

In addition to the scientific operations, Perimeter Institute also shares the importance of basic research and the power of theoretical physics with the wider community. The award winning educational outreach team provides specifically crafted programs and educational resources for youth, teachers and members of the general public across Canada and beyond.

Funding

Perimeter Institute is an independent, non-profit, charitable organization focused on scientific research, training and educational outreach in theoretical physics. The Institute is funded through an innovative public-private partnership - uniting governments, individuals, corporations, and foundations in a shared enterprise to help advance scientific breakthroughs, nurture scientific talent, and share scientific discovery with the broader public.

Workplace

Perimeter Institute endeavors to foster an inclusive culture that embraces and celebrates the diversity of our organization. We are committed to providing a safe, comfortable, harassment-free working environment for all students, scientists, support staff and volunteers, regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religion or place of origin. We have a zero tolerance policy towards any form of harassment, discrimination, or violence in the workplace. Trust and mutual respect are the basis of our community.

Perimeter has many collaboration areas where residents can sit, talk, and work. The glass panels just in front of the windows on the second floor are frosted — when you get close they become whiteboards! (Apparently if you don't give residents enough space to write they start writing on walls and other surfaces.)

Berkeley Lab physicist Natalie Roe, here with the Silicon Vertex Detector, is a member of BaBar, a particle physics experiment on the PEP-II B-Factory at SLAC (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center). BaBar was designed primarily to study the (a)symmetries of the neutral B-meson system, but its rich physics program includes a variety of other b-quark, tau-lepton, and other particle physics topics. The Silicon Vertex Detector shown here plays a key role in the BaBar experiment.

BOSS measures the three-dimensional clustering of galaxies at various redshifts, revealing their precise distance, the age of the universe at that redshift, and how fast the universe has expanded. The measurement uses a "standard ruler" based on the regular variations of the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which reveal variations in the density of matter in the early universe that gave rise to the later clustering of galaxies and large-scale structure of the universe today. newscenter.lbl.gov/news-releases/2012/03/30/boss-first-re...
