“Dispersion Dinner”
While eating Easter dinner, sunlight shone through a window and through a glass ornament. When sunlight traveled through this ornament, which acted like a prism, the above image was formed on a plate. The end result is several rainbows being created on my dinner plate through the process of dispersion. How were these rainbows created? White light is a mixture of all of the colors of the rainbow. When light travels from one material to another, each color bends at a different angle. The physics concept that explains why each color, or wavelength, bends differently is called refraction. Each color travels at different speed in the medium. Red colors travel the fastest whereas purple colors travel the slowest in the glass. The faster light is traveling through a medium, the lesser it bends when traveling through that material. This means that red bends the least whereas purple bends the most. This is what produces the rainbows seen above.

The stem of the water glass has the effect of a biconcave lens. This is also known as a concave diverging lens. This effect will occur when both sides of the lens are curved away from the viewer. The laws of refraction of diverging lenses result in a very particular type of image. This image is always virtual, meaning that the location that the viewer perceives the image to be is not where rays of light truly come together. The image is always upright and smaller than the original object.
