Bamburgh Castle, county of Northumberland, north east coast of England. In 1464 King Henry VI and his wife, Queen Margaret of Anjou, took refuge here during the ‘Wars of the Roses’ so technically this castle became, for a short period, the seat of the government of England. Later that year the castle was seized by rival Edward IV’s army, and it became the first English castle to be taken by canon fire.
The castle has been partially restored to provide living accommodation, and parts of it are open as a museum.
Previously, in 547 AD (and 500 years before this Norman castle was built ) Bamburgh was the seat of the Anglo Saxon king Ida. The site has been occupied since at least 1BC, and was an important stronghold for the Romans. Historically, the castle played a strong part in the struggle between English and Scottish peoples.

"Bloodstock agent John Stuart called his friend, Douglas Joyce, about a horse. Well, the call was actually about money, but . . . “I owe you some money from that breeding deal, but I’ve got another idea,” Stuart said. “Let me buy you a horse instead.” Joyce asked, “You got one in mind?” Stuart, of course, did: “ Yeah, I’m looking at him.”
The rest is Thoroughbred history. That horse was John’s Call – a $4,000 purchase in 1992 who blossomed into a Grade I winner, $1.5 million earner, world-class lead pony and example for anyone who ever thought they were too old to be great. Retired in 2001, the chestnut gelding was euthanized Thursday after breaking his right front leg in a field at trainer Tom Voss’ farm in Monkton, Md. The son of Lord At War was 19."

I took a visit with my sister to Talgarth Asylum the other day. I've been desperate to go there since seeing a number of wonderful photos of it from contacts. We stayed for about an hour or so to take shots before our imaginations got the better of us and we scarpered.
The history bit:
The Mid Wales (or Talgarth) Hospital (formerly known as the Brecon and Radnor Joint Asylum) was built in 1900 on over 200 acres of land and was officially opened on the 22nd February 1903. The site comprised the hospital, which catered 352 patients, a farm, bakery, tailor, market garden and a church. The hospital was closed in 2000, but up to that point it offered treatments for mentally unstable persons, rehabilitation and continuing care, psychological support and many more including reflexology and chiropody. Some of these services have now been transferred to Bronllys Hospital. The site of Talgarth Asylum is now privately owned, however, it has been derelict for a number of years. It offers some wonderful photo opportunities...if you're brave enough :o)

I'm planning a trip back there soon, but think going with a group is better than just two people (we freaked each other out a little too much).

The fortress "Sostra" is actually a Roman military post, built over the ruins of a Thracian settlement. It is situated in 12 km. north of the town of Troian and 28 km. south of Lovech situatied on a relatively flat terrain in the valley of the Osam river.
The word "sostra" in ancient Greek means girdle, bandage, barrier. It's quite likely that the origins of the name "Sostra" has a meaning of something that blocks the valley. In geographic terms the location of the fortress is really a key point in the river valley (named by the Thracians "Azamus"), surrounded by the hills of Trapezitsa (550 m. over SL) in the north, a branch of the Mikre hills - Popina and Popinka (500 m. over SL) in the west and Sulashko stronghold (500 m. over SL) in the east. In the southern direction the valley continues seperating the lands of the villages Dalbok Dol and Dobrodan. The fortress is build near the influx of the Ladana river (Lomets river), which flows very close to the northern wall and Osam river, which flows about 500 m. from the eastern wall. The fortress itself has an altitude of 300 m. over SL. The whole valley has an area of about 4 sq. km. The eastern gate, which is the main face of the site "Kalugersko"and is the one and only thoroughfare towards the upper course of the Osam river.

"Avery Island’s most spectacular feature was developed by the late Edward Avery McIlhenny, known as "Monsieur Ned" by his French speaking friends and associates. Much of the world knows about TABASCO® Pepper Sauce, made for over 125 years on Avery Island, Louisiana. Not as many people know that Avery Island is actually a salt dome that extends some eight miles beneath the earth's surface. Or that the protruding "island" part of the formation is home to the world's most beautiful sanctuaries for the preservation and study of flora and fauna.
It was on Avery Island, where salt and pepper meet, that Edward McIlhenny helped save the snowy egret from extinction. In 1895 when the bird was being hunted for its plummage, McIlhenny built an aviary on Avery Island and captured and raised eight wild egrets. After they had raised their hatches and were ready to migrate, McIlhenny freed them. The egrets returned the next spring and every spring since. The egrets and herons return by the thousands to the rookery now called "Bird City". Not surprisingly, Jungle Gardens is a birder's paradise, home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.
McIlhenny did much more to ensure that feature generations had an ideal spot to enjoy and study the beauties of nature and to observe plants and flowers from around the world in his 200 acre Jungle Gardens. The gardens are home to a large collection of camellias. Thousands of plants represent some 600 varieties, including imports from Japan and France, as well as varieties that McIlhenny developed on Avery Island. You will see acres upon acres of bright azalea flowers that carpet the landscape in the spring. Massive live oak trees are prevalent throughout the gardens, along with brilliant wildflowers and groves of evergreens. The Chinese Garden contains a Buddha sculpture dating back to 1000 A.D."

Addiction 5. My Baby!
Miniman is my baby. She is the tiny baby kitten I adopted 5 months ago from the streets.
She was maybe 1 week old and I was supposed to keep her just for the night... Then for the weekend, and the rest you know!
People keep telling me she's either ugly or "different". She's got a tiny head and she has no defined colour, but I don't care, she's my baby and I love her very much.
I think she arrived in my life at the best time and made me very happy during hard times. I love her.
Her official name is Miniman (my mom's cat is called Michoman and she is a smaller version of him, so... yeah, I'm silly!), but we calll her Mina most of the time. Her necklace says MINI <3 and she's got about 10 more nicknames.
Can one be addicted to a cat? I am!
This was like the hardest picture to take! She kept moving and fighting her way away from my arms haha... I love her!! Have I said that too many times?!
....
In every 100 steps ? It is a kind of advance, a course, a ballade. It is, while leaving at home, 100 steps after 100 steps (that is to say in all 2400 step and thus 24 sights) photographs of what was in front of me.
So, every day, during 24 days, on Flickr, on the same place and at the same hour, the picture of previous the day is replaced by a new image.
To keep the track of the past images, they are placed in a message under the image which changes. It is thus necessary to reserve 24 successive places from the dépos of the first image.
This choice of presentation has the effect of showing the messages of the visitors and their comment on the image which was, for them, that of day.
...
About the shot
Possibly my best shot to date, technically-speaking. Only needed to crop and sharpen very slightly. I'm very pleased that I seem to be improving rather than remaining static. Now if only I could produce these kinds of results every time, but I imagine this is the way for many of us photographers!

About the Diana Monkey
The Diana Monkey ranges from 40 to 55 cm in length, excluding its tail, which is of a uniform 3–4 cm diameter and 50–75 cm long. Adults weigh between 4–7 kg. Individual Diana Monkeys may live for up to 20 years. They are generally black or dark grey, but have a white throat, crescent-shaped browband, ruff and beard; the browband gave the species its common name, since it was held to resemble the bow of the goddess Diana. The species is regarded as endangered by the IUCN as well as by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the chief dangers to them being habitat destruction (they are now virtually confined to coastal areas) and hunting for bushmeat.
The Diana Monkey is a noisy presence in the forest. Its marked coloration allows a wide range of visual social signals, and it also has a wide range of alarm calls, with different sounds for different predators. The monkey has distinctive alarm calls for different kinds of predators, and recent research has shown that other forest residents such as the Yellow-casqued Hornbill are able to discriminate these and take appropriate action.

i could have sworn i had this up here already.. but i guess here it is again.

No he tenido mucho tiempo para fotear.
First photo after long days without uploading. Not much time for shooting.
This is the first photo (not good at all) from a session in an abandoned discotheque on Iquique. Me and some friends got there after a soccer game on last Monday’s night. On the first visit, I hadn’t brought my camera with me. We just explored and it was a really creepy place to be.
We decided to come back there on Wednesday and I obviously took my camera this time. It was fun. Anyway, it’s quite difficult to try to shoot without being disturbed by your friends when they aren’t interested on photography at all. It was a nice day, by the way. Hope you like this collection, guys.

I was hoping to shoot birds in the first morning sun.. well.. that was not to be. This little fella had to be shot in almost dark.. so I increased the exposure by over 2 to get it to lighten up a bit. Also, my ISO was set to 100 and in manual mode I used 1/200 for my shutter speed. It is a miracle I got this picture at all! =)
Software used: Lightroom 3 for basic exposure setting and RAW conversion to TIFF and in CS5 I used OnOne Phototools to get the bird bright and sharp without also making the background more sharp.
About the curious neck adornments, read about this bird on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna's_Hummingbird it is Anna's hummingbird and they have a ruby colored throat and some ruby also on the head on the side. Some people call them the "ruby throat-ed hummingbird" but Anna's is special because of the forked tail and that the tail is dark and has white edges. this hummingbird species is native to the West Coast of the US and particularly many are found in Southern California and specifically in my backyard. =) I grow many flowers and trees specifically for them--I don't feed them with the sugar feeder because it actually hurts them! So they get to pick among a variety of flowers and flowering trees in my yard.
This little fella (a juvenile male) is sitting on my still dormant apricot tree checking me out. I had babies all over the place this spring but I also have a cat who investigates everything I investigate... so I did not visit the hummingbird nests, hoping not to call attention to them. =)
Happy Monday everyone!

- The fourth rainbow in two days! On July 1, on at least three occasions there was sunshine while it rained. I saw three rainbows, the first around 6:15pm, the second around 7:05pm and the third around 8:35pm, each time lasting several minutes. The next evening, at around 7:30pm on July 2, there was again a rainbow for about 15 minutes!
