Coccinellidae is a family of beetles, known variously as ladybirds (UK, Ireland, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Malta, parts of Canada), ladybugs (North America), or lady beetles (preferred by some scientists). Lesser-used names include ladyclock, lady cow, and lady fly.[1]
They are small insects, ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm (0.04 to 0.4 inches), and are commonly yellow, orange, or scarlet with small black spots on their wing covers, with black legs, head and antennae. A very large number of species are mostly or entirely black, grey, or brown and may be difficult for non-entomologists to recognize as coccinellids (and, conversely, there are many small beetles that are easily mistaken as such, like tortoise beetles).
Thousands demonstrated on Friday in Tahrir Square, demanding public trial of Mubarak, his interior ministry Habib el-Adly, and other regime figures.
The square and the surrounding streets since early morning have been emptied from all police and military presence. Most of the established political forces, most notably the Muslim Brothers, did not take part in the demonstrations.
The families of the martyrs were present, and demanded speedy trials of the police murderers, as it's becoming clear day by day that they will get away with what they did. More shockingly, most police officers who are currently undergoing trial still hold their positions (or have been promoted)! Demonstrators also denounced the brutal police crackdown on the protests in the square on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Protesters marched, in solidarity with the detainees, by 4pm on the ministerial cabinet headquarters and the interior ministry. Policemen from inside the interior ministry's compound threw rocks and were making provocative gestures with their hands. Protesters responded by rocks and a shower of insults and chants against both the military and the police.
I've heard very strong chants, demanding the execution of Mubarak, Adly and Field Marshal Tantawi. While some are staging a sit in at the moment, others will resume protesting on Saturday, in the run up to the mass protests planned next Friday 8 July.

Scanned my second and hopefully last roll of damaged Kodachrome. This is one of the less damaged shots from the roll. It is still beaten up, just like the equipment it was taken with, and the equipment behind the lens. I have one roll of Kodachrome 25 that is waiting for me to pick it up and I have three rolls of Kodachrome 64 in the fridge. Very sad that I have to say goodbye to this stellar film. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to shoot with it yet, but I know that at least one of those rolls, probably two, are going into my Leica.
I want to space those three rolls out over the next year since I am not likely to get any more of it. I want to say goodbye to Kodachrome in a dignified way. Dwayne's is stopping processing for Kodachrome on December 30th, 2010 so I have to finish before December of next year. Hopefully I can give this legendary film a send off it deserves.

I'd better add a description to this! Ants and Aphids have a symbiotic relationship, although not so close that one could not live without the other, but beneficial to both parties. The Aphids suck the sap of plants. They're very good at this, but aren't very good at defending themselves from predators. Ants would like to drink the sap, but aren't very good at getting it, their mouthparts are a good strong set of jaws which happen to be very good at chasing of predators. So, the ants look after the ahpids, tending them and chasing off anything that comes near, big or small. In return the aphids produce a sugar rich liquid called honeydew, which the ant in this photo is collecting from the aphid. Symbiotic relationships like this where food is exchanged are known as trophobiosis, with the provider of the food - in this case the aphid - being the trophobiont.

Ci ho messo quasi un mese a trovare il coraggio di scrivere. Quel che c'era, ormai non c'è più. Che ci fosse di preciso non lo so nemmeno io. Perchè è vero, ho fatto tutto di testa mia. Sono partito di testa, un'allucinazione sentimentale mi ha fatto credere che ci fosse qualcosa che non c'è.
Avevo capito che la cosa non era reciproca, ma sai, so raccontarla talmente bene che sono stato vittima della mia stessa arte. Non so per quale stupido motivo, ma pensavo che... magari. E invece no, ho dovuto sentirmelo dire a voce, per permettere ad un telefono di riportarmi sulla terra ferma.
Per quanto faccia male, per quanto mi secchi usare la terapia del distacco per dimenticarti sotto certi punti di vista, io non ce l'ho con te. Perchè se la scintilla non s'è innescata non ci sono ragioni che tengano. E' così, così e basta. Lo condivido totalmente, lo capisco. Per quanto mi piacerebbe avere questo potere sul genere umano, non ce l'ho.
Certo, non è facile, ma tant'è. All'inizio faceva più male di quanto ne faccia ora, ma a qualcosa è servito. Mi sono permesso di vivere emozioni che di solito freno, per paura di quello che sarà dopo. Che poi sarebbe quello che vivo adesso. Disillusione, tristezza, melancolia, sfiducia, apatia, silenzio.
Perchè anche se mi piacerebbe tantissimo e viva nell'illusione di trovarti, non ci crederò mai del tutto. Forse sei solo un'ideale, un'ispirazione che non ha incarnato. Non posso farci niente, sebbene mi sia permesso di pensare al concetto di "noi", a prescindere da te, in fondo sento sempre che non accadrà. Non c'entri tu. E non è pessimismo, è fare i conti con la realtà. La mia storia, le mie storie, ciò che ho vissuto e non vissuto, non me lo consentono.
Un po' però mi manchi, e al momento non riesco a capire se sia un bene o un male.

On this picture the only textured are of interest is the center of the Calla lily where the pollen is. So if you can zoom in, go for that area. Also, this software allows you to make the clone colors metallic--which I did here for the center and some of the white. For $30, this is a fascinating piece of software if you like to paint. It has gazillions of features, many significantly better than Corel or other painter software.

A just for fun session but the post-processing wasn't fun anymore. On the left side was a picture on the wall, on the right was a window. First, I replaced both by gradient filled polygons. Although the edited part was matching the original colours, I decided to replace the whole background. The original tone was a chocolate brown colour but for the conversion, a not so dark tone might have been better, I think. The b&w conversion was made with the channel mixer (60% red, 25% blue, 15% green) in Photoshop.
Unfortunately I just had a single Speedlite 550 EX, so it was pretty tricky to get the highlights in her eyes and a natural looking light from above. I held the camera in portrait orientation, the flash with a bouncer was turned on approx. 60° towards the celing, so some light went still straight on her eyes and created the highlights while most of the light came as an indirect lighting from the celing. Sometimes the basics in physics and maths can be quite helpful :-)
Eine nur-so-zum-Spaß-Aufnahme, aber die Nachbearbeitiung war dann alles andere als lustig. Auf der linken Seite hing ein Foto an der Wand, rechts war ein Fenster. Zuerst habe ich beide durch Vielecke ersetzt, die mit einem Farbverlauf gefüllt wurden. Obwohl ich die Farben in den eingefügten Flachen so hinbekommen hatte wie im Rest der Aufnahme, entschied ich mich dann trotzdem den ganzen Hintergrund zu ersetzen. Im Originalbild ist die Farbe der Wand ein Schokoladenbraun, aber ich denke für die s/w-Umwandlung wäre ein hellerer Ton besser gewesen. Die s/w-Umwandlung erfolgte in Photoshop über den Kanalmixer ( (60% rot, 25% blau, 15% grün)
Leider hatte ich nur einen Speedlite 550 EX, so war es ziemlich schwierig Highlights in die Augen zu setzen und noch ein natürlich wirkendes Lich von oben zu bekommen. So hielt ich die Kamera hochkant und drehte den Blitz mit einem Diffusor etwa 60° auf die Decke, so ging immer noch etwas Licht auf ihre Augen und sorgte für den Glanz während das meiste Licht als indirektes Licht von der Decke reflektiert wurde. Manchmal sind die Grundlagen der Physik und Mathematik eben doch ganz hilfreich.

For a week, Lee and myself left the Hebrides in the hopeful search for a new home on the mainland.
We headed across Scotland to Aberdeenshire and back, so most of these photos are from this trip including the Isle of Skye.
We stayed at Glenside Stables, a stables managed by Lee's animal-mad daughter Abby! There we saw the grandchildren for the first time in months and of course the many animals including a Roe Deer.
This lovely wee creature was abandoned by its mother and is being hand reared by Abby. As a result, it follows her around like its mother, plays happily with the dogs and the children and will curl up happily with Theo, the toddler.

Las dos principales consolas de la actual generación, Xbox One y PlayStation 4, se presentaron inicialmente durante 2013 con el negro como color principal. Algunos detalles también estuvieron disponibles desde el primer momento con otras tonalidades, pero el cuerpo principal de ambos cacharros se ha mantenido siempre igual. Hasta ahora.
Tanto PS4 como Xbox One tendrán sus ediciones blancas durante este año. La de Sony lo hará bajo una edición especial junto con Destiny y su blanco glaciar; por su parte, la de Microsoft en blanco aún no es oficial, aunque ya ha aparecido en algunas tiendas online: sí, Xbox One terminará llegando en blanco, y casi coincidiendo en tiempo con su compañera y contrincante de batallas.
En el caso de la Xbox One blanca os sonará porque surgió como una edición especial para empleados de Microsoft. Ahora se abriría al público y, como la PS4, también con una edición especial junto con Sunset Overdrive, una exclusividad para las de Microsoft que se especula con que vaya a lanzarse al mercado a finales de octubre. Lo lógico es que el bundle de la Xbox One blanca y Sunset Overdrive también empiece a venderse en esas fechas, claro.

Suele ser muy habitual que las consolas de escritorio se presenten primero en color negro con las salvedades de Nintendo, cuya Wii empezó vendiéndose sólo en blanco, y la Wii U en ambos colores. Tanto Microsoft como Sony han tenido affaires tanto con negro como con blanco, dependiendo del modelo con mayor o menor importancia de uno u otro.
Evidentemente el color de una videoconsola no afecta en absoluto a su rendimiento, pero también es cierto que el blanco suele ser un color muy requerido por los usuarios de tecnología, generalmente por una mera cuestión estética. En el pasado también hemos visto, incluso, ediciones especiales mucho más llamativas que los planos negro o blanco, y seguramente éstas también terminen llegando al mercado tarde o temprano.

40+ years ago I lost touch with my Best Friend in the entire world. Both being military wives we'd made numerous moves across country - both of our fathers had passed away and our mothers each had new married names ... so conventional searching methods were fruitless. About a month ago I was thrilled to finally find my friend - and especially so to find that she was less than two hours away from where I live!
After several weeks of daily writing/chats we finally met again last weekend - and it was if not a single day had passed between us. :-) We've written an article together about our experience and whether or not we have success in publication ... it was fun and rewarding to collaborate with my friend. Rest assured - we will NEVER lose touch again! :-)

Forma biologica: T scap (Terofite scapose. Piante annue con asse fiorale allungato, spesso privo di foglie)
Descrizione: Pianta annua, erbacea infestante, pelosa, con fusti prostrati spesso radicanti; altezza 5÷50 cm.
Le foglie semplici, da ellittiche ad ovali con margine fortemente dentato, le basali sono opposte, le cauline sono alterne.
I fiori nascono all’ascella delle foglie, sono portati da lunghi peduncoli ,hanno corolle azzurre, con fauce giallognola. I fiori rimangono chiusi nelle giornate nuvolose con poca luce.
I frutti sono capsule compresse biloculari cuoriformi, con nervbi sposrgenti e talora peli ghiandolari; contengono da 4 a 8 semi per lobo.

Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutto il territorio
Habitat: Comune infestante dei luoghi erbosi, pascoli, orti, incolti, colture sarchiate; da 0 a 1.800 m.
Etimologia: Il nome del genere, fissato nel XVIII secolo da Linneo, già adottato in Inghilterra (1527) e in Francia (1545), dal nome dell’italiana Santa Veronica (1445-1497). Alcune fonti ritengono invece che il nome derivi da Betonica per traslitterazione da V a B, nome che appartiene ad un genere della famiglia delle Labiate, altri vedono una radice in "verus" ed "unicus",o in una fantasiosa unione fra"vires" latino e "nike" greco, ipotizzando “forze vittoriose”.
Ciò che appare improbabile è che il nome del genere in questione, abbia a che fare con la Veronica che, per pietà, asciugò con un panno il volto di Cristo sulla via del Calvario, la figura della “santa” Veronica, che appare nella sesta stazione della Via Crucis, non è presente nei quattro Vangeli. Popolare nelle sacre rappresentazioni alla fine del Medio Evo, potrebbe derivare il nome dalla storpiatura di "vera ikona",la "vera immagine".
Il panno, detto “ sudario della Veronica” fu conservato a Roma in San Pietro dal secolo VIII e fu oggetto di culto fino alla Controriforma. Nel 1527 col sacco di Roma di Carlo V., sparì, fu ritrovato solo nel XVII secolo, inserito in un pilastro della volta della Basilica vaticana, con l’immagine molto sbiadita.
Alla santa, molto stimata alla fine del Medio Evo, è legato il nome di Santa Veronica da Binasco (1445-1497), Papa Leone X ne approvò il culto nel 1517.
Il nome specifico fa riferimento al luogo di origine della pianta: la Persia .

A view along the waterfront in San Francisco with Alcatraz Island in the background. I had wanted to take a tour of Alcatraz on this trip, but I had no idea how popular it was. Apparently not booking tickets way in advance was a mistake. So I had to settle for this view from afar. The gull is perched atop the USS Pampanito at Pier 45.
Some noise left in this shot on purpose to go along with the old timey processing.

Es evidente que el monasterio de Poio es uno de los atractivos turísticos más importantes de este municipio. No hay más que ver la cifra anual de visitantes para darse cuenta de que es, junto con la villa marinera de Combarro, el punto más conocido y el más atrayente del Concello de Poio.
Historia
Se cree que su fundación data del siglo VII, y es atribuida a San Fructuoso, aunque hay quien considera que en realidad fue establecido por uno de sus discípulos, llamado Teodosio. En cualquier caso, sabemos que la orden benedictina se instaló allí hasta la invasión musulmana, y que en el siglo X volvieron a asentarse en el valle de Poio. De hecho, el primer documento histórico que se conserva donde se menciona este monasterio es del año 942.
Será a partir de este siglo cuando el cenobio comience a ganar en poder y riqueza, gracias en gran medida a la protección y devoción de los monarcas de los siglos XII y XIII. No podemos olvidar, por ejemplo, que la misma Doña Urraca se encargó, en el siglo XII, de donar al monasterio el coto de Poio y puerto de Combarro, entre muchas otras villas de los alrededores. Se puede decir que este enclave se erigió en centro económico y cultural de toda la región. También el emperador Carlos V se acordaría de esta congregación, otorgándoles en 1548 un privilegio que les autorizaba a inaugurar un Colegio Mayor de Teología, que llegaría a contar con maestros tan ilustres como el Padre Feijoo.
