Unedited shot of the lovely Miss Monyart, Miss E and Mr.U in the 'ABC Treehouse' in Amsterdam yesterday. Taken with my Panasonic DMC-FZ8. No editing, no magic tricks, no Photoshop :)
Yesterday I was the Artist in Residency at the 'ABC Treehouse' in the Voetboogstraat 11 for the 'MultiCulti' exhibition again, and even though it was raining most of the time, lots of nice people came by to visit me and the lovely Miss Monyart there again and the cool Miss Marjon a.k.a. 'I amsterdam' took this really cool picture of us, thanks a lot guys&girls, it was fun again :))
Because my brain is the size of a peanut and I haven't slept very much lately, I've been telling everybody that yesterday was the last day of the exhibition but of course that's not true, it's going on until the end of the month, October 30 will be the final day, hahaha! We were going to have an open discussion forum about the influence of foreigners living in the best country in the world on the 30st, but because the crazy Skinheads of the English Defence League have announced that they're coming to Amsterdam that day, to show their support for Geert Wilders (who doesn't want them to come), and everybody who disagrees with that has said they'll come as well, to beat some sense into their shaved heads, we're expecting a wicked Saturday with (hopefully not!) violence, street fighting and other unwanted and unnecessary things, the discussion will take place a week later and it's an by Invitation only kinda thing...that's sad and sucks, but what can you do against the stupidity of humans, sigh...

'Collingwood Terminals' On Black
A few recent shots of the Collingwood Terminals building, a landmark from both the water and land of Collingwood, Ontario. It was a bright sunny day but with the wind chill, it was probably -30C. So cold that you could not work without gloves and I had to keep ducking back into the car to keep from getting frost bite.
This building has been the subject of much debate about its fate. At one point there was talk about putting a restaurant on top of it which would provide a spectacular view of the area, but the costs apparently did not make this feasible. A local paint store agreed to donate the paint if the Town would provide the labour to repaint the exterior. From a distance it appears white, but as can be seen up close, it is quite another matter. Once again, the labour costs proved to be too much and this idea failed.
Never the less, if you have ever driven into Collingwood on HWY #124 or approached it on the lake, there is no mistaking this landmark.
PS:
Story about the Town of Collingwood considering the sale of the Terminals to a group that would put a condo building between it and the water, leaving the south side as is.

As copied from this post on Accessify:
Ever the apologist, here I am again justifying lack of activity on this site (and some others) over the last year or two (the list of other time-suckers can be found here). What's the justification this time? Well, it's a good one.
While travelling around the globe a couple of years ago, I started doing some technical editing for Sitepoint. It was a great way to earn a bit of money to pay my way while not getting in the way of moving from place to place - no bar work or fruit-picking for me! Much of this editing work was carried out in the back of my van in the late hours while my wife-to-be snoozed. When I returned to UK after travelling, I was approached about some more potential writing work. Despite the fact that I knew I had an extremely busy year ahead of me, somehow I felt brave enough to take it on. Over seven months, while dealing with two house sales, buying a new house and making tentative wedding plans, I spent many evenings working on this project. Today, for the first time, I saw the evidence that it was finally coming to fruition - Sitepoint have added the book to their 'coming soon' section.
So, what's the book about?
At this point, it might be worth re-reading this post about the poor state of many beginner web design books on the market. The reason for my trip to the book shops was to really get a feel for what's out there and to make sure that I was on track with what I was writing. I couldn't have been happier at how bad it was - it made me realise that what I had started writing for Sitepoint was much needed and much overdue.
Who is this book aimed at?
Well, chances are it's not aimed at you. As much as I'd like to say it's a cutting edge book about CSS tricks that you and I love to peruse, or an accessibility book with a slightly different angle than those currently out there, it's neither. This is what it is:
It's a book that you can give to your web newbie mother/sister/auntie
It doesn't presume any foreknowledge of HTML or ownership of any expensive/fancy web authoring software (nor does it suggest going out and buying any)
While it's for beginners, it's not going to call anyone a dummy ;-)
It's a web design book that refuses to teach bad, outdated practices as a way of getting eye-catching results more quickly than the 'proper' method. For example, the first time you will see page layout covered is with CSS in chapter 4. Tables are covered - but in a chapter about managing data in tables, just where they should be .
In short, it's a book that aims to teach complete beginners how to build web sites that conform to web standards such that they won't need to unlearn bad practices at a later date, or even know that those bad practices exist.
Well, I've talked it up so much, about time I provided a link:
Build Your First Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS
Publication date is March/April (I believe the latter ismore likely). If you think you know someone that this could be of benefit to, please do add your name to the notification list (by joining the Sitepoint Book Buyers' Club). I am looking forward to seeing the finished result ... and I really do wonder what bizarre and completely off-topic picture this book will have on the cover!

Better bigger?
I've giving in and posting this for 2 reasons;
[one] There's quite a few hours of homework ahead of me
[two] A story to go along with this
Went snowboarding today. As most ski hills are (midwest or otherwise) they are always tucked back in the middle of nowhere with windy dirt roads leading to a "mountainous" area. Here in Northern Illinois, that's exactly how it is. There is this little road I always take as a short cut and as I was driving down it, the clouds quite literally parted over this field. It's been flurrying with sun for the past couple of days so, yes, those little white dots are snowflakes. I immediately backed up the car and started *snaps snaps*. I figured I actually get out of my car to get a better angle but as I was walking up to the fence as seen above, I tried to hit the shutter and it did nothing. My little info screen read 'f EE'. So I stood in the middle of the road for a minute, somewhat paniced as my shiny new camera appeared to have pulled a Windows Vista (LOL). So I hop back in the car, grab my BlackBerry and get to Googling.
After I had driven off, I found somewhere on a forum that my camera was "frozen" and I needed to take the battery and the SD card out and let it sit for a couple days. HAHA YEAH RIGHT. So I scrolled down some more and came across another post that simply said, "check the aperture ring, sometimes it can get twisted or knocked out of the lock." And tada, that would be the cure :D So all ended well... except for my crappy snowboarding shots. They...well, they just didn't work out so well, so I leave you with this to ponder.
(not a fan, 48 more days to make up for it)
One Tree Hill Season 1-7 DVD Boxset
Set in the fictional small town of Tree Hill, NC, this teen-driven drama tells the story of two half brothers, who share a last name and nothing else. Brooding, blue-collar Lucas is a talented street-side basketball player, but his skills are appreciated only by his friends at the river court. Popular, affluent Nathan basks in the hero-worship of the town, as the star of his high school team. And both boys are the son of former college ball player, Dan Scott, whose long ago choice to abandon Lucas and his mother Karen, will haunt him long into his life with wife Deb, and their son Nathan. Until now, Dan has managed to keep his two sons far from each other. But the past and present collide sharply when Tree Hill's basketball coach recruits Lucas for his team, much to the chagrin of Nathan and Daddy Dan. And the siblings natural rivalry only intensifies when they set their sights on the same girl, Peyton Sawyer. The residue of the past lingers far into the future for the residents of Tree Hill, even as a new generation is rising. Tree Hill follows the lives and loves of these two brothers, their friends and their family as they navigate high school, marriage, and finally... adulthood. American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis)
New Horseshoe Lake
Brazos Bend State Park
Needville, Texas
The exact number of alligators at Brazos Bend SP is unknown, but there are estimated to be 250-350 alligators over 6' long that reside in the 1,000 acres of water in the park. According to the website, there are also some 15-16 footers living here. These appeared to be about 6-8 feet long and I ventured off the path down a pretty steep bank to the edge of the water to get a closer view. Even though there have been no incidents with alligators at the park, I was a little nervous, so I didn't stay down there very long. They were very cool to watch though! ...and this shot is cropped pretty tightly, you really need at least a 300mm to get close enough to them. Please note that my birthday is coming up and I accept B&H gift cards - LOL.

Normalmente ponen cuatro huevos.

Poroiba - Akau - Wigschool - Pruikenschool
The wigmen of the Huli people aren't like Western toupee manufacturers. They are wizards who only work with people who have fine heads of hair.
What a traditional wigman does is use ancient magic to make hair grow faster than normal so it can be cut off and turned into a wig. Evidently, magic - like hair restorer - doesn't work if the hair is long gone.
This singular way of making hairpieces is found in the Tari Valley, 2000m up in the Highlands of PNG, an area just starting to make the transition from the old ways of centuries past to the new ideas which have begun to flow from the outside world.
When I explored the villages and roadside markets around the lodge, most of the men I met were wearing caps, but a good number still went about their daily business dressed in the traditional wigs.
In fact many had not one but two wigs - a plain day wig shaped like an upturned bowl, and an ornate ceremonial wig decorated with bird feathers - possession of which, like ownership of many pigs or having more than one wife, is a sign of wealth and status.
As a result the wigmen are still much in demand. And, this being a place where magic is taken very seriously, they are deeply respected. The sign welcoming visitors to Tari Airport highlights the fact that the area is "Home to the Huli wigman."

The Huli are an indigenous people that live in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. They number over 65,000 and have been living in the area for at least 600 years. They speak Huli, Tok Pisin, and English.

Norway is a peace-loving country. We find it very difficult to grasp the concept of terror and hate.
Norway is also a small country. Even though bigger countries might argue that relatively few people wee killed in the terror attack, for us it is many. (For us, twice as many were killed than in the 9/11-attack.) If we don't know someone who was killed, we probably know someone who does. These days are perhaps the most difficult ones, because the police are releasing the names of the killed. The media are showing pictures of them all, smiling, not knowing that they soon will be killed. A few words accompany each picture, saying where they were killed, and who they were, what they were doing. The full meaning of the attack is shown. The promising young politicians, the parents who has left three children.
It is easy to hate the attacker. We choose not to. We answer, not with fear, but with coming together in huge masses. Every age, every ethnicity, every religion, every political belief.
Every day, I pass this landmark in Bergen. The most popular meeting point, the one place everyone knows where is. It has been turned in to a meeting point for everyone. Every day more flowers, cards, and candles are laid here. Every day, it is surrounded by people showing respect. It is eerily quiet, where it's usually busy and full of music and laughter. Young and old stand together, crying. People who have never met, and will probably never meet again, hug and comfort each other.
The attacker has failed. Utterly failed. He wanted us to hate the multi cultural society, we choose to love each other more, show everyone compassion, show every "new fellow Norwegian" that they are welcome, and that we cherish what they can give us and teach us.
As a young survivor of the Utøya-attack said to the media right after she was safe: "If one man can show so much hate, imagine how much love we all can show together".
I pass this spot every day on my way to Boyle. For me it's one of those spots I use as a backdrop to assess and measure light and note the passing of the seasons. It's situated at the bottom of the Curlews which are just visible at the top of the frame. It was unusual to see the cattle in this field, it was under a foot of water a few weeks earlier, I just had to stop to record them. The light was very poor, nothing new about that this Summer, so I struggled a bit with camera settings. Obviously, I wanted the foreground subject to be sharp but I felt the background, on the top thirds line, also deserved to be relatively sharp. I figured a small aperture of f/11 would be appropriate but this would not give me a shutter speed fast enough to hold the 200mm lens steady while I balanced myself in the middle of the ditch! I had to open the aperture to f/7 and be satisfied with a speed of 1/100. I also had to bring the ISO up to 320. The cattle were very cooperative and stayed fairly still, a tripod would have given me the shot I wanted but I had to settle for this.
In the end, the background is softer that I'd hoped for but I felt the pleasing composition of the foreground group compensated for that.

A stunning tree with the most beautiful red flowers - each bigger than my hand! - one of many lining the streets of Cairo, Egypt.
Bombax are among the largest trees in their regions, reaching 30 to 40 metres in height and up to 3 metres trunk diameter. The leaves are compound with entire margins and deciduous, being shed in the dry-season. They measure 30 to 50 cm across and are palmate in shape with 5 to 9 leaflets. They bear 5 to 10 cm long red flowers between January and March while the tree is still leafless.
They are native to tropical areas in western Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, as well as sub-tropical regions of East Asia and northern Australia. Common names for the genus include Silk Cotton Tree, Simal, Red Cotton Tree, Kapok and simply Bombax. In Chinese they are known as Mumian (Chinese: 木棉; pinyin: mùmián), meaning "tree cotton"
And contrary to popuar belief my reference to red white and blue refers to the British flag :-)
View On White -- So I didn't made it last time hanging around much longer in Flickr. I hope I'll do better now. I kinda miss it but on the other hand I'm glad I have time for other "important" things in life.
South Texas is in a 20 month drought and the few thunderstorms are welcome but simply not enough.
These islands in Lake Travis are a sure sign for this drought. This was taken mid June and when I drove by last week I think it was even worse.
I made a seven bracket shot here with the intention for some HDR image but couldn't get a satisfying result. The different pieces of software were all overwhelmed by the data (especially the gradient around the sun) and manual blending overwhelmed yours truly. So I ended up selecting the most promising image and did some "regular" Photoshop wizardry.
