Shasta Daisy is a perennial garden plant, growing up to 2-3 ft tall. It grows into a bushy clump with foliage spreading about 18 inches across. Shasta daisies bloom over a long period from early summer to autumn with happy bright white flowerheads borne singly atop long green stems. The flower- heads are 2-5 in across with snow white ray flowers and golden yellow discs. The foliage grows in a mat with glossy dark green leaves 8-12 in long arranged in a basal rosette. The leaves are strap shaped, nearly evergreen, and rather thick. There are smaller leaves on the erect flowering stems. The names Shasta daisy has an interesting origin. This daisy was created by Luther Burbank in 1890 in his experimental garden under the shadow of Mt. Shasta in northern California. He crossed L. maximum from the Spanish Pyrenees with C. lacustre from Portugal. Formerly classified in the genus Chrysanthemum, these daisies were transferred to their own genus of Leucanthemum because they lack some traits of true Chrysanthemums. Shasta daisies are characterized by a distinct and unpleasant odor, which makes them unusual amongst flowers.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=-SJq5QD-iVQ

- m.youtube.com/watch?v=yiscYp6tnlM

m.youtube.com/watch?v=Mup_bztsx68

According to Wikipedia, the Clouded Leopard is a cat found from the Himalayan foothills through mainland Southeast Asia into China, and has been classified as vulnerable since 2008 by IUCN. Its total population size is suspected to be fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, with a decreasing population trend, and no single population numbering more than 1,000 adults. The clouded leopard is considered to form an evolutionary link between the big cats and the small cats. The Sunda Clouded Leopard found on Sumatra and Borneo is genetically distinct and has been considered a separate species since 2006. Both species are the smallest of the big cats, and are not closely related to the leopard. Clouded Leopards weigh between 25 and 51 lbs (11.5 - 23 kg). Females vary in head-to-base-of-tail length from 27 to 37 inches (69 - 94cm), with a tail 24 to 32 inches (61 - 81cm) long. Males are larger at 32 to 43 inches (81 - 109cm) with a tail 29 to 36 inches (74 - 91cm) long. Their shoulder height varies from 20 to 22 inches (51 - 56cm). They have exceptionally long, piercing canine teeth, the upper being about three times as long as the basal width of the socket. The upper pair of canines may measure 1.6 inches (4cm) or longer. They are often referred to as a “modern-day saber tooth” because they have the largest canines in proportion to their body size, matching the tiger in the length of their canines.

Sunrise at Mystery Bay on the Far South Coast of NSW.

Mystery Bay is a small town and a beautiful rocky bay located 15 kilometers south of Narooma on the New South Wales far south coast. It takes about 5 hours to get there from Sydney.

So what is so mysterious about this bay? Some time ago, three men in a canoe left Bega (town nearby) heading north to the open ocean. Since then no one seen them again. Months later their canoe was found in this bay with no bodies, just blood all over the boat.

There is a large camping area just minutes away from the Mystery Bay Beach and Billy’s Beach in Eurobodalla National Park. Camping area has basic primitive facilities, but its exceptional location on the cliffs of the Mystery Bay and quick access to outstanding beaches makes it a really unique and popular place.

Cliffs of the Mystery Bay are made from a layered rock and have numerous caves, rock pools and arches. There is a short walking track that starts in the camping area and leads to a number of spectacular lookouts with great views over the rugged coast of the Mystery Bay.

Kelas Saya

tahun depan, mungkin bukan TOP 10 sekolah,

tapi kami aim 11 A1, 12 A1, dan 13 A1 untuk sekolah.

tengoklah,

persepsi guru terhadap kelas kami akan berubah.

percayalah,

InsyaAllah.

Toneel - Performance - The Asaro Mudmen

We see the story about a couple who had been stolen a peace of ground.

The Asarao Mudmen come from just outside the town of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

Legend has it that the mudmen were defeated by an opposing tribe and forced to flee into the Asaro River. They waited until dusk before attempting to escape. The enemy saw them arise from the muddy banks covered in mud and thought they were spirits. Most tribes in Papua New Guinea are very scared of spirits, so the enemy fled in fear, and the Asaro Mudmen were victorious. The Mudmen then went into the town to see what had happened, not knowing the enemy were still there. The enemy were so terrified they ran back to their town and had a special ceremony to ward off the spirits.

A HOT DAY IN TUCSON:

To escape the heat of 110+ degrees in the valley in Tucson, Arizona, on June 17, 2007 we drove up to the nearly 8,000 ft. elevation of Mount Lemon, where the temperature plumeted to 78 in the 40 minutes it took to drive to the top. This is a photo I took at Windy Vista Point about halfway up the mountain. You can see the road we traveled up through the mountains, and in the far distance the city of Tucson. It was a spectacular view at Windy Vista Point for we could see the city of Tucson sprawled out in the valley below, and the mountains of Sonora, Mexico in the far distance.

I lived south of Tucson from 1984 until 1999 (in Green Valley, Amado and Sahuarita) and worked in Nogales and Tucson for several years before moving to Washington DC. This photo was taken on my the first trip back to Tucson in over 8 years... it sure was sure nice to see the "old pueblo" again and the beauty of the desert, mountains and wide open spaces of the beautiful State of Arizona.

INFORMATION ON MOUNT LEMMON:

Mount Lemmon is in the Santa Catalina Mountains located in the Coronado National Forest north of Tucson, AZ. It is 9,157 feet above sea-level, and receives approximately 180 inches of snow annually. Mount Lemmon was named in honor of Sarah Lemmon, wife of botanist John Gill Lemmon, who trekked to the top of the mountain with her husband in 1881.

A small town called Summerhaven is on the mountain, which includes many cabins only occupied part of the year. Much of this town was devastated by the Aspen Fire of 2003, and recovery is still taking place. It is near Ski Valley which is the southernmost ski destination in the continental United States.

The location 'Windy Point' was built by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, using a large number of prisoners over a period of 18 years.

The Catalina Highway goes from the east side of Tucson up to Summerhaven, at the top of Mt. Lemmon. The beautiful, curving road is a favorite drive for tourists, for locals escaping summer's heat, for motorcyclists, and cyclists. The highway has been improved recently, but the speed limit has also been lowered to 35 MPH (56 km/h) due to concerns about the highway's safety during peak traffic times.

This photograph was taken on the 4th of July 1983 outside of my apartment in Marina del Rey. The original was shot on a Kodachrome 64 slide. On the 4th of July every year there is a wonderful fireworks display at the Marina, it draws people from adjacent beach cities and much of the western part of Los Angeles. The smart non-residents arrive early to get the best viewing positions. This is a silhouette of a family of four (the children are sitting on their parents' laps). My girlfriend was at the window and happened to notice this family and the balloon and called it to my attention. I brought the camera and shot several frames. This is the best of them.

This was not my first choice for songs ( although I do love it ) - that was Blondie's "Dreaming...". Had it all set...and then the weather...

So, I have switched to Alannis' "Ironic" and added my own verse at the end...

( I dropped the first verses...)

>>Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

When you think everything's okay and everything's going right

And life has a funny way of helping you out when

You think everything's gone wrong and everthing blows up

In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late

A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break

It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife

It's meeting the man of my dreams

And then meeting his beautiful wife

And isn't it ironic... don't you think

A little too ironic.. and yeah I really do think...

(repeat chorus)

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

And life has a funny funny way of helping you out

Helping you out

( and then my morning, put to verse...)

It's like a wet day when all you need is a little sun

A new song, when you already had an awesome one

A head full of frizzies even with your hair JUST done

Like taking too many flickr roulette pics in the rain when you got it right on the first one...

Isn't it ironic

A Christchurch Fourth

U.S. Embassy Wellington celebrated a special Fourth of July in Christchurch, where Ambassador David Huebner honored seven New Zealanders for the courage and commitment they had shown helping evacuate a large American delegation in the immediate aftermath of the devastating February 22 earthquake.

About 150 guests attended the ceremony, designed to show solidarity with the struggling city and to signal that Christchurch is open for business. Minister of Conservation Kate Wilkinson thanked Ambassador Huebner for hosting the event and giving Cantabrians a semblance of normality by having something to celebrate. The event was hosted in the northwest of the city in one of the few locations still able to cater to a larger party.

A large delegation of U.S. government leaders, businesspeople, and academics was in Christchurch for the U.S.-New Zealand Partnership Forum on February 22, 2011. The delegation was spread throughout the city when the earthquake struck. In the chaotic aftermath it became imperative to locate, gather, and evacuate the delegation -- something that would have been simply impossible without the dedicated courage of many, many people.

"The stoic professionalism of so many in the face of so much ensured that our American visitors were superbly looked after that day," Ambassador Huebner said.

"It was for that reason, and to acknowledge that Christchurch is still functional and open for business, that we decided to hold an Independence Day ceremony in Christchurch," Ambassador Huebner said. "We wanted not only to thank everyone involved that day, but to underscore the long and deep friendship between the United States and the people of New Zealand in general and Christchurch in particular."

Canterbury has suffered thousands of aftershocks in recent months and two large ones in mid-June that further rattled the nerves of its citizens and damaged many more buildings.

Honored by the Ambassador were bus drivers who stuck with their vehicles and transported Americans back to safety at the U.S. Antarctic Center, members of the Royal New Zealand Air Force who assisted with the evacuations, and a local senior constable from the New Zealand Police who remained with U.S. Embassy staff who performed American Citizen services in the week after the earthquake.

The Very Rev. Peter Beck, dean of the now-crumbled Christ Church Cathedral, thanked Ambassador Huebner for what he described as a "very moving" event. He pointed out that the last formal service at the Cathedral, the iconic heart of the city, had been on the evening before the opening of the U.S.-New Zealand Partnership, which many members of both delegations attended.

Cited for their "unwavering courage and commitment" with the American Ambassador's Exemplary Service award were: Simon McKenzie, driver, Leopard Coach; John Goldie, driver, VIP Transport, Visits and Ceremonial Office; Heather Caspersen, driver, VIP Transport, Visits and Ceremonial Office; Flight Lieutenant Vaughn Jones, RNZAF; Warrant Officer Warren Tyndall, RNZAF; Squadron Leader Andy Scott, RNZAF; and Senior Constable Thomas "Blue" Young, New Zealand Police.

Hi, my name is Sion Fullana... and I'm a natural voyeur.

Yes, like that. No shy, no shame. I'm a curious person by nature... fascinated by humans, human bodies, human souls and their interactions...

Ever since I was a kid, I remember myself in the summer... in the penthouse of the apartment building where we lived (part of the complex of my dad's hotel in Majorca). From our terrace (that surrounded 3/4 of the place), I could see the entire hotel, plus two blocks of apartments... with their balconies, and the open windows. People smoking outside, people naked while getting ready to head out for the night, people talking or playing cards... life unfolding, small in the distance, for my eyes only, like a bee hive colony... and there I was... happy and fascinated by all that...

As years went by, I think I became a journalist, later a filmmaker and eventually a photographer because of all this... I love to peep... to see life through my eyes or my lens... and somehow, to bring it back, to share it with the world... always in a good way. I feel proud of myself in the belief that I always try to show the best in the people I photograph, to capture nice moments from life on the streets... never diminishing anyone or taking them at their worst looks...

So yes... I'm a natural voyeur...

I look, I see, I seek to see...

And hopefully, I'll get you to see with me...

Manresa is the capital of the Bages comarca (county), located in the geographic centre of Catalonia, Spain, and crossed by the river Cardener. It is an industrial area with textile, metallurgical, and glass industries. Saint Ignatius of Loyola stopped to pray in the town on his way back from Montserrat in 1522. As such, the town is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics. It is believed the comarcal name "Bages" comes from a corruption of the Latin "Bacchus" due to the extensive production of wine in the area. The wine was grown mainly in terraced vineyards, and many of these old terraces can be seen today. Wine ceased to be the main product of the area as a consequence of phylloxera, but is still a very important part of the Manresa/Bages economy.

During the Napoleonic invasion, the volunteer troops of Manresa (sometent in Catalan) defeated the French troops in the Bruch Pass (June 1808), but the retreating French burned and demolished much of the town. After the expulsion of Napoleon's troops, Manresans rebuilt the town using the rubble. This is the reason for the strange "jerry-built" look of the city. In the 12th century Manresa was said to have contained 500 Jewish families, most of whom lived in a narrow lane called "Grau dels Jueus," near the town hall; their cemetery, still called "Fossana dels Jueus," was outside the city. In the 13th and 14th centuries the Jews there were engaged in manufacturing, trading (including slaves), money-lending (at the rate of 20 per cent, the usual interest at that time), and in the cultivation of their vineyards and estates.

The hostility of the Christians towards the Jews, which prevailed throughout Catalonia, was also manifested in Manresa. In 1325 the Christian inhabitants of the town tried to prevent the Jews from baking their Passover bread, so that the latter were obliged to appeal to the King for protection. The Jews in Manresa did not escape the general persecution of 1391, and many of them professed to accept Christianity.

After 1414 comparatively few Jews remained in the town, and in 1492 they sold their property for whatever they could get, and left the country. At the beginning of the 15th century Manresa had 30,000 inhabitants; three centuries later it contained barely one-fifth of that number. Several members of the Zabarra (Sabara) family lived in Manresa. The town is not mentioned in the "Shebeṭ Yehudah."

I have a smile

stretched from ear to ear

to see you walking down the road

we meet at the lights

I stare for a while

the world around disappears

just you and me

on this island of hope

a breath between us could be miles

let me surround you

my sea to your shore

let me be the calm you seek

oh and every time I'm close to you

there's too much I can't say

and you just walk away

and I forgot

to tell you

I love you

and the night's

too long

and cold here

without you

I grieve in my condition

for I cannot find the strength to say I need you so

From September 1939 to the Summer of 1944 a total of 11,537 Vultees were built to meet the needs

of the US Army Air Corps and the US Navy, making the plane one of the most important American trainer aircraft of World War II. The BT-13 production run outnumbered all other Basic Trainer (BT) types produced.

The BT-13 was an important step in the training syllabus of combat pilots-to-be of WW II. The Vultee Valiant was the next aircraft cadet pilots flew after learning to fly in primary trainers such as the PT-17 Stearman, Fairchild PT-19 or the Ryan PT-22. Unlike the primary trainers that were fitted with fixed pitch propellers, the BT-13 was somewhat less forgiving than the primary trainers which introduce the feel of a more powerful and complex aircraft having a controllable two-position variable pitch propeller with an electrical system, flight instruments and two-way radio communications. Training included formation flight, instrument flying and aerobatics.

After mastering the BT-13, pilots would then advance to the North American AT-6/SNJ Texan for fighter pilot training and then to twin engine advance training for bombers or transport type aircraft.

Artist Statement

The platters I have sent to this exhibition combine several ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were made to demonstrate wealth and power. They were made to tell a story, to commemorate an event or a person, and to demonstrate skill and challenge the abilities of the artisans who made them. The second tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and last tradition is the One-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.

Humor through the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as old as the use of the material. I have always felt that humor has been given short shift as a serious emotion. Art work that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of serious art. It may be that we do not understand the function of humor as well as we understand the function of the other emotions.

In the work presented I have tried to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are big to give them a slightly overblown sense of their own importance and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The large size to fit the importance of large gatherings.

I have tried to replace historical patterns with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of personal interests. Images of turn of the century technology, (the Machine Age), are a personal favorite. Subject matter ranges from humorous depiction of everyday objects to gender stereotypes. My abilities as A draftsman are limited but seem to be adequate for the kind and quality of image that the subject requires. They have a cartoon look as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.

The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and makes no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica style and is done very much like a watercolor on soft paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an additional firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere using an electric kiln.

shout it out

i can't hold back no more

i let it out

all these feelings that were

trapped inside

i was frozen evertime

i looked in your eyes

clear my head

from all the cluttered things

i should've said

that wasn't me

no i can't live like that

I'm waking up and there is no

looking back

(chorus)

Every little tear

i was scared to cry

everyting i feared

but i kept inside

i don't wanna hold

it back one more day

oh wash it away

every tiny thought clouding

up my head

every single word that

i never said

i refuse to feel ashamed

let it rain

let it rain

clear the sky

i start to breathe again

no-thing to hide

let you through to who

i am inside

every layer

'til you get underneath my skin

let you in, let you in

(chorus)

every little tear

i was scared to cry

everything i feard

but i kept inside

i dont wanna hold it back

Color 1st comment | large on black | Link to prints available on my profile page

Trying to chose between the black & white and the color on this one nearly killed me (see first comment for the color image). You really can't imagine how much time I spent flipping back and forth and agonizing and changing my mind. At last I made the decision to post the black & white because I noticed I had a pattern going with my last few shots: color, b/w, color, b/w, color ... well, it was b/w's turn I guess.

I really do love both versions, and both types of presentation in general. For my recent work, the b/w I feel can present a stronger overall composition and image - without the "distraction" of color. However, the color often seems more beautiful, and more reminiscent of the scene itself.

When I was a painter (and still, as a designer) I am very colorful and think of my strength in the use of color to be among my greatest talents as an artist. So, it's not so easy for me to leave the beauty of color behind. But, the strength and impact of b/w, well ... ahhhh! I just go back and forth a million times.

I know that whichever I choose there will be many who will prefer the other (but also many who will be quite happy with the choice). I value critique and the opinions of others, but ultimately it is my own opinion that I need to find each time. Usually I can find it. With this photo, I could not.

National and regional leaders for the Bureau of Land Management visited a timber sale demonstration in the Salem District of Oregon, July 11, 2014.

During presentations from local BLM staffers, executives got an introduction to the Oregon and California Railroad Grant Lands, and also were schooled on updates to modern forestry equipment, like LIDAR (Light Detection and Radar).

The day concluded with the timber thinning demonstration at Gordon Creek, which is a part of the Lower Sandy River Watershed, east of Portland.

The following information regarding St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) is from Catholic Online: www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=311

Francesco, named in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, was born to Giuseppa and Grazio Forgione, peasant farmers, in the small Italian village of Pietrelcina on May 25, 1887. From his childhood, it was evident that he was a special child of God. Francesco was very devout even as a child, and at an early age felt drawn to the priesthood. He became a Capuchin novice at the age of sixteen and received the habit in 1902. Francesco was ordained to the priesthood in 1910 after seven years of study and became known as Padre Pio.

On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the visible marks of the crucifixion, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of Church. The doctor who examined Padre Pio could not find any natural cause for the wounds. Upon his death in 1968, the wounds were no longer visible. In fact, there was no scaring and the skin was completely renewed. He had predicted 50 years prior that upon his death the wounds would heal. The wounds of the stigmata were not the only mystical phenomenon experienced by Padre Pio.

The blood from the stigmata had an odor described by many as similar to that of perfume or flowers, and the gift of bilocation was attributed to him. Padre Pio had the ability to read the hearts of the penitents who flocked to him for confession which he heard for ten or twelve hours per day. Padre Pio used the confessional to bring both sinners and devout souls closer to God; he would know just the right word of counsel or encouragement that was needed. Even before his death, people spoke to Padre Pio about his possible canonization. He died on September 23, 1968 at the age of eighty-one. His funeral was attended by about 100,000 people.

On June 16, 2002, over 500,000 Padre Pio devotees gathered in Rome to witness Pope John Paul II proclaim Padre Pio, Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. The Padre Pio Foundation and many benefactors traveled to Rome, San Giovanni Rotondo, Pietrelcina, Piana Romana and many other holy places to celebrate Padre Pio's Canonization.

The sculpture of Padre Pio was photographed at the National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima. The shrine is located in Washington, NJ, on the grounds of the World Apostolate of Fatima, USA.

Until the early 20th Century, northern Michigan was almost completely dependent on waterborne commerce for all of its needs. Thousands of sailing vessels and early steamers plied the Great Lakes at a time when there were almost no aids to navigation to guide them along the dangerous coastline with its treacherous rocks, shoals and reefs. One such reef extends 1-12/ miles out into Lake Huron at Sturgeon Point, just north of Harrisville, Michigan. In 1869, the Lighthouse Service began construction of the lighthouse at Sturgeon Point to mark this hazard. Sturgeon Point Lighthouse became operational in the spring of 1870 and has been in continuous service for 137 years. It is still an operational lighthouse.

In 1876 the U. S. Life Saving Service established a Life Saving Station just south of Sturgeon Point Lighthouse. This station provided around-the-clock rescue capability for vessels in distress. With the formation of the U. S. Coast Guard in 1915, Sturgeon Point became a Coast Guard station.

The lighthouse was electrified and automated in 1939 and the last personnel left in 1941. The Coast Guard buildings were subsequently destroyed, however, the the lighthouse itself survived but was severely vandalized.

In 1982 the Alcona Historical Society leased the lighthouse and began a three - year restoration project. The interior of the keeper's house was completely restored, and the buildings were painted. Almost all of the work was done by volunteers. The lighthouse and keeper's house are of masonry construction on a limestone block foundation. The tower is 70 feet, 9 inches tall and is 16 feet in diameter at its base. The light is a 3.5 order Fresnel lens made in Paris, France. The light apparatus is still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The keeper's house is now a maritime museum which is open to the public seven days a week from Memorial Day to Labor Day Weekend. The lighthouse tower is open to the public. The grounds are open all year.

via WordPress www.heathersholidaze.com/index.php/2017/09/27/wooden-toys...

When strolling down the aisle of any department store for children, chances are 90% of the toys you’ll find will be made out of plastic. From fake phones to trains and trucks, there are endless options to give our little ones. While it’s clear that these dominate the market, are they really the best for babies? If you’re looking for a better option, wooden toys are highly recommended. While seemingly “old school” due to their material, these are fantastic for any age child for the following reasons.

1. Increased Safety

Unlike wooden toys, which don’t easily break because they are solid, plastic toys can easily break, which can be a danger to a child of any age. In addition to this, some plastic toys are made with the chemical BPA, which isn’t a risk with those made of wood.

2. Durability

If you want a toy that’s going to last for 10+ years, wood is the best choice. Plastic is very unlikely to last even a fraction of this time.

3. Many Uses

Wooden toys can be used in a wide variety of ways as your child grows from an infant to a toddler. For example, while they might use blocks to chew on as a teething baby, when they are a toddler they can use those for counting or be making shapes on the floor.

4. Encourages Play With Others

With most electronic plastic toys, children don’t want to share. However, with wooden toys, most kids are eager to share and use their imaginations to pretend to play all day.

5. Eco-Friendly

Unlike plastic, wood is biodegradable and therefore won’t end up in a landfill. While you can pass down plastic toys, chances are the quality will eventually deteriorate and that item will end up in a landfill at some point.

6. Quite for the House

Any parent can appreciate a toy that doesn’t make loud noises or shine bright lights, especially in a sea of other toys that do just that. Wooden toys look nice without being equipped with those flashing lights or sound boxes that make other toys so bothersome.

7. Encourages Problem Solving

Wooden toys allow children to tackle problem solving and reasoning because there aren’t any electronics telling them what to do. This development is especially apparent with puzzles and blocks.

8. Child-Friendly Durability

Kids love to throw things, slam things, and treat most toys quite brutally. Fortunately, with toys made of wood, you will have security knowing they will remain in good shape for years to come.

9. Encourages Imagination

Without the bright lights and loud noises that toys made of a plastic offer, children can let their imaginations run wild. This can help with brain development and stimulate creativity.

Are Wooden Toys Better for Babies? Every parent wants the best for their little ones. While plastic toys are certainly easy to find and can help with learning, it’s worthwhile to invest in wooden toys as well. They will be purchases you and your kids will love for years to come.

I recently acquired a Gibson SG Special in bad shape. I took it to a luthier to see what could be done. It turned out that besides the finish, the guitar is fine. Rick Mullen, the luthier, and I decided to do a makeover. He striped off the old finish, sanded it down a hair and is refinishing it in dark green satin. I chose dark green because I love the color and thought it would look good with the ebony fretboard. Most SGs are either cherry, black, or white. This should turn out to be a very unique looking instrument.

Photos taken by Rick.

Rick, besides being a luthier, is also a bass player and played with Commander Cody for many years. If you live in the Hudson Valley region and love guitars, a trip to his workshop is well worth the trip.

Happy

by Leona Lewis

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSTYgeor9k8

Someone once told me that you have to choose

What you win or lose

You can’t have everything

Don’t you take chances

You might feel the pain

Don’t you love in vain

’cause love won’t set you free

I can’t stand by the side

And watch this life pass me by

So unhappy

But safe as could be

So what if it hurts me?

So what it I break down?

So what if this world just throws me off the edge,

My feet run out of ground

I gotta find my place

I wanna hear my sound

Don’t care about all the pain in front of me

I'm just trying to be happy

I just wanna be happy, yeah

Holding on tightly

just can’t let it go

just trying to play my role

slowly disappear

But all these days

They feel like they’re the same

Just different faces

different place

Get me out of here

I can’t stand by the side

Ooh, no

And watch this life pass me by

Pass me by

So what if it hurts me?

So what if i break down?

So what if this world just throws me off the edge?

my feet run out of ground

I gotta find my place

I wanna hear my sound

don’t care about all the pain in front of me

I’m just trying to be happy

Oh, happy

Oh

So many times i can't see

Like I'm a stranger on this road

But don't say victim

Don’t say anything

So what if it hurts me?

So what if I break down?

So what if this world just throws me off the edge?

My feet run out of ground

I gotta find my place

I wanna hear my sound

Don’t care about all the pain in front of me

I just wanna be happy

Happy

I just wanna be

Oh

I just wanna be

Happy

Recently returned from two days spent at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and this is one of many photos I took while there. We stayed at the historic El Tovar Hotel, situated just along the rim - what a great location! I hadn't been to the Grand Canyon in 15 years and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the breath-taking landscapes once again.

INFORMATION ON THE GRAND CANYON:

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park — one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

Longstanding scientific consensus has been that the canyon was created by the Colorado River over a six million year period. The canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, ranges in width from 4 to 18 miles (6.4 to 29 km) and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet). Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. The canyon began in the west, followed by another that formed in the east. Eventually, the two broke through and met as a single majestic rent in the earth some six million years ago. The merger apparently occurred where the river today bends to the west, in the area known as the Kaibab Arch.

Before European immigration, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" in Hopi language) a holy site and made pilgrimages to it. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.

The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province. The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. It is not the deepest canyon in the world — Cotahuasi Canyon (11598 feet or 3535 m) and Colca Canyon (10499 feet or 3200 m), both in Arequipa, Peru, and Hells Canyon (7,993 feet or 2436 m) on the Oregon-Idaho border, are all deeper — but Grand Canyon is known for its overwhelming size and its intricate and colorful landscape. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.

About 600 deaths have occurred in the Grand Canyon since the 1870s. Some of these deaths occurred as the result of overly zealous photographic endeavors, some were the result of airplane collisions within the canyon, and some visitors drowned in the Colorado River. Many hikers overestimate their fitness level, become dehydrated and confused, and must be rescued. The Park Service now posts a picture of an attractive and fit young man at several trailheads with the caption "Every year we rescue hundreds of people from the Canyon. Most of them look like him", in an attempt to discourage hikers from feats which are beyond their abilities.

According to Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon, 50 fatalities have resulted from falls; 65 deaths were attributable to environmental causes, including heat stroke, cardiac arrest, dehydration, and hypothermia; 7 were caught in flash floods; 79 were drowned in the Colorado River; 242 perished in airplane and helicopter crashes (128 of them in the 1956 disaster mentioned below); 25 died in freak errors and accidents, including lightning strikes and rock falls; 47 committed suicide; and 23 were the victims of homicides.

These were two of four 6-month-old cubs (three males and one female) born at Zoo Atlanta to 9-year-old African lioness Kiki and 9-year-old male Kamau. These two cubs had been sitting on the rock looking at the visitors. Unfortunately, as I set up to take my shot the cub on the right looked away and never did look back before they moved away. I really like the shot I had missed, so at home I used Photoshop CS6 to copy the head of the one cub looking our way and paste it over the head of the cub looking away, thus providing this near symmetrical image. Which cub is the one with the other's head? I'll let you figure it out.
