ENGLISH

Canfranc is a municipality in the Aragón Valley of north-eastern Spain consisting of two towns. The name of the village is from Campus Franci, literally the field of foreigners. It was originally a small market village, as well as providing pilgrims on the Arles route of the Way of St. James their first respite after the difficult crossing of the Pyrenees over the pass of Somport.

It was founded between 1080–90 by Sancho Ramírez, King of Aragón. Canfranc was also a command post, protecting the borders and controlling taxes, which were donated to the Cathedral of Jaca.

On 29 October 1288, the treaty of Canfranc mediated by Edward I of England was signed here, providing for the release of Charles II of Naples from his imprisonment by Peter III of Aragon.

The village, which lies in the valley of the Aragón River covers an area of 71,6 km² and is situated at an altitude of 1040 m. The remains to be seen include a Romanesque pilgrim's bridge and two churches of interest: Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (12th-16th c) with four Baroque retablos, and la Trinidad (16th century). The town was obliterated by fire in 1617 and again in 1944, after which the villagers for the most part moved to nearby Canfranc Estación. The current population is 77.

Canfranc-Estación (altitude 1190 m.) was largely created due to the inauguration of a railroad crossing the Pyrenees on 18 July 1928. The trains continued running until an international train accident destroyed the bridge at nearby L'Estanguet and severed the link on March 27, 1970. Canfranc Estación is most well known due to the rumours of "German gold" arriving here during World War II (see external link below). Also, British espionage smuggled information and people from Vichy France to the consulate in San Sebastián through Canfranc since the nearer Irún bordered with occupied France. The train station is the highlight of the village and was used during the filming of Doctor Zhivago. There has been talk for some time of reopening international train traffic between France and Spain, but until that time the area is profiting from its nearness to the ski resorts of Candanchú and Astún. The current population is 454.

The tunnel is being used for the Laboratorio subterráneo de Canfranc (Canfranc underground laboratory).

CASTELLANO

Spend all your time waiting

for that second chance

for a break that would make it okay

there's always one reason

to feel not good enough

and it's hard at the end of the day

I need some distraction

oh beautiful release

memory seeps from my veins

let me be empty

and weightless and maybe

I'll find some peace tonight

in the arms of an angel

fly away from here

from this dark cold hotel room

and the endlessness that you fear

you are pulled from the wreckage

of your silent reverie

you're in the arms of the angel

may you find some comfort there

so tired of the straight line

and everywhere you turn

there's vultures and thieves at your back

and the storm keeps on twisting

you keep on building the lie

that you make up for all that you lack

it don't make no difference

escaping one last time

it's easier to believe in this sweet madness oh

this glorious sadness that brings me to my knees

in the arms of an angel

fly away from here

from this dark cold hotel room

and the endlessness that you fear

you are pulled from the wreckage

of your silent reverie

you're in the arms of the angel

may you find some comfort there

you're in the arms of the angel

may you find some comfort here

Sarah McLachlan was born on January 28, 1968, and adopted in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As a child, she took voice lessons, along with studies in classical piano and guitar. When she was 17 years old, and still a student at Queen Elizabeth High School, she fronted a short-lived rock band called The October Game. One of the band's songs, "Grind", credited as a group composition, can be found on the independent Flamingo Records release 'Out of the Fog' and the CD 'Out of the Fog Too'. It has yet to be released elsewhere. Her high school yearbook predicted that she was "destined to become a famous rock star."

Following The October Game's first concert at Dalhousie University opening for Moev, McLachlan was offered a recording contract with Vancouver-based independent record label Nettwerk by Moev's Mark Jowett. McLachlan's parents persuaded her to finish her studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design before embarking on a new life as a recording artist, and McLachlan finally signed to Nettwerk two years later before having written a single song.

In 1997, Sarah McLachlan married her drummer, Ashwin Sood, in Jamaica. McLachlan lost her mother to cancer in December 2001, while McLachlan herself was pregnant. McLachlan gave birth to a daughter, whom she named India Ann Sushil Sood, on April 6, 2002, in Vancouver. By this time, McLachlan had already completed three-quarters of the production on her next record, Afterglow. On June 22, 2007, she gave birth to her second daughter, Taja Summer Sood, in Vancouver. McLachlan announced her separation from Ashwin Sood in September 2008.

The last home of Virgin Mary in Ephesus, Turkey. Three sets of proofs are provided by the American Society of Ephesus:

(1) The tomb of St John is in Ephesus and this is the first basilica in the world dedicated to the Virgin Mary; in the early days of the church places of worship were only dedicated to those who lived or died in the locality.

(2) the Ecumenical council of 431AD was held in Ephesus in this Basilica for the definition of the dogma of the divine motherhood of Mary. The council fathers write of Nestorius ‘… after his arrival in Ephesus, where John the theologian and the Holy Virgin Mary…’

(3) Also the villagers of Kirkindje are the descendants of the Christians of Ephesus. The death of Mary has been passed on generation by generation and they have kept this tradition alive through an annual pilgrimage on August 15th.

NB. The chapel is built on the original foundations, which range in date from the 1st and 4th centuries AD. Part of the building is 7th century and it was partly restored in 1951.

In Islam, Muslims believe that Mary was a Virgin mother who gave birth to Prophet Jesus; however Muslims do not believe that Jesus is the son of God, that Mary is the mother of God; such ideas conflict with the core Islamic teaching that God Almighty is One, without partner, without children, without parents, neither male, nor female, God is, God.

While the church does not officially recognise this as Mary's home, Pope Paul visited and prayed here in 1967.

The 1901 Census has a Thomas T Boast, aged 10, living at Cromer Road, Holt. This is the household of his parents, George J, (aged 37 and a Domestic Gardener from Thorpe St. Andrews near Norwich), and Mary A, (aged 35 and from Fakenham). Their other children are:-

Also staying with them is a niece, Olive M Boast, born Langham and aged 13.

While the 3rd Battalion was a UK based training establishment, it was likely that Lt Boast was on attachment to another Battalion of the Regiment. Neuville-Bourjonval was only re-taken from the Germans at the start of September 1918, and was still very much in the front-line. A study of other casualties buried in this cemetery from this time reveals a number of officer casualties from the units that made up the 15th Brigade, which included the 1st Norfolks.

15th September 1916 Battle of the Somme

The last great Allied effort to achieve a breakthrough came on 15 September in the Battle of Flers-Courcelette with the initial advance made by 11 British divisions (nine from Fourth Army, two Canadian divisions on the Reserve Army sector) and a later attack by four French corps.

The battle is chiefly remembered today as the debut of the tank. The British had high hopes that this secret weapon would break the deadlock of the trenches. Early tanks were not weapons of mobile warfare—with a top speed of 2 mph (3.2 km/h), they were easily outpaced by the infantry—but were designed for trench warfare. They were untroubled by barbed wire obstacles and impervious to rifle and machine gun fire, though highly vulnerable to artillery. Additionally, the tanks were notoriously unreliable; of the 49 tanks available on 15 September, only 32 made it to the start line, and of these, only 21 made it into action

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Flers-Courcelette

An intense preliminary bombardment began on 12 September and at 6.20am on Friday 15 September the advance began in mist and smoke. XIV Corps attack, on the extreme right, where hopes of breakthrough were pinned, fared badly; 56th Division and 6th Division lost heavily as tanks and artillery support failed to neutralise vital defensive positions

On the 1901 Census, the 7 year old Charles W is living at Chapel Street, Holt. His widowed mother, the 34 year old Mary Ann earns a living as a washerwoman. She is also bringing up Augustus, (aged 3) and Susannah, (aged 1), although she has a 35 year old boarder, William White living with her. William is employed as a Hedger. All of them come from Holt.

On 12th October 1915 the Battalion moved from billets to a line in front of the St Elie Quarries, taking over from the Coldstream Guards. The attack was planned to go ahead the following day under a smoke cloud with the Norfolks closing on the German trenches from both ends of their position thus straightening their line, their own trenches being in a semi-circle. The left side of the Battalion was also tasked with bombing a German communications trench. A bright sunny day with an ideal wind for moving the smoke towards the enemy positions, the artillery bombardment began at 12:00 and was intensive by 13:45. 54 heavy and 86 field howitzers and 286 field guns fired on enemy trenches in the area of the Hohenzollern Redoubt, Fosse 8, the Quarries, Gun Trench and the positions south to Chalk Pit Wood. It failed to cause sufficient damage to the enemy positions. The smoke barrage went wrong and ceased by 13:40, twenty minutes before the attack was launched at 14:00 and was thus very thin. German machine gun fire from in front and from the direction of Slag Alley, opposite the Norfolks right flank, enfiladed their attack. Whilst they gained a foothold in the Quarries and consolidated the position they were unable to advance further. In the battalions first serious engagement they lost 5 Officers killed or died of wounds and 6 wounded, and 66 other ranks killed, 196 wounded and 160 missing.

19th April 1917 During the 2nd Battle of Gaza,

Facing the Tank Redoubt was the 161st Brigade of the 54th Division. To their right were the two Australian battalions (1st and 3rd) of the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade who had dismounted about 4,000 yards from their objective. As the infantry went in to attack at 7.30am they were joined by a single tank called "The Nutty" which attracted a lot of shell fire. The tank followed a wayward path towards the redoubt on the summit of a knoll where it was fired on point blank by four field guns until it was stopped and set alight in the middle of the position.

The infantry and the 1st Camel Battalion, having suffered heavy casualties on their approach, now made a bayonet charge against the trenches. About 30 "Camels" and 20 of the British infantry (soldiers of the 5th (territorial Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment) reached the redoubt, then occupied by around 600 Turks who immediately broke and fled towards their second line of defences to the rear.

The British and Australians held on unsupported for about two hours by which time most had been wounded. With no reinforcements at hand and a Turkish counter-attack imminent, the survivors endeavoured to escape back to their own lines.

To the right (west) of Tank Redoubt, the 3rd Camel Battalion, advancing in the gap between two redoubts, actually made the furthest advance of the battle, crossing the Gaza-Beersheba Road and occupying a pair of low hills (dubbed "Jack" and "Jill"). As the advances on their flanks faltered, the "Camels" were forced to retreat to avoid being isolated.

This day was the 2nd day of the battle of Festurbert. The battalion had taken been in action the day before and had taken casualties. For what happened on the day I refer you to the Battalion’s war diary.

17 May 1915 2.30 a.m. Orders received to withdraw Bn. to reserve trenches. Movement completed by 3.45 a.m. About 1.30 p.m. Bn. received orders to be ready to move at shortest notice. Ref.Map 1/10000. ILLIES-VIOLAINE-FESTUBERT. About 3 p.m. orders received to move Bn. into position in rear of old German Fire trench between L1-L2 in order to make an attack in conjunction with 4 Cameron Highs: on left, on points L10, L11, L8 to K5. Battn. frontage from L8-K5. 'B' Coy. on right, under Capt. H.E.Huntriss [Harold Edward HUNTRISS], 2 Bedf.R. 'C' Coy. on right, under Bt.Lt.Col.E.I.de S.Thorpe [Edward Ivan de Sausmarez THORPE, CMG, DSO], 2 Bedf.R. were detailed as the two leading coys: & formed up between L1 & L2. 'A' Coy. under Capt.W.Hutton-Williams [William HUTTON-WILLIAMS] 3rd E.Sur.R. attached 2 Bedf.R. & 'D' Cou. under Maj.J.Mackenzie, V.C. [John MacKENZIE, VC, DCM] 2 Bedf.R. formed up in rear of old British trench, in support, moving up into new line as places were vacated by 'B' & 'C' Coys. About 7.30 p.m. 'B' and 'C' Coys. advanced to the Attack, on right of 4th Camerons, with 2 sections of Bombthrowers under 2nd Lt.W.J. Stonier [William John STONIER], 2nd Bedf.R. working on the right down the communication trench towards K.4. & K.5. 'B' & 'C' Coys. on vacating the trenches to the assault were met by heavy shrapnel, machine gun & rifle fire & Coy.Q.M.S. (Actg.Coy.S.M.) was killed as he climbed over the parapet. (On 22nd May, official information was received, that this N.C.O. had been granted a commission as 2nd Lt. in the 2nd Cheshire Regt). By about 9 p.m. when the whole Battn. less 2 platoons of 'A' Coy. which were kept in reserve by the C.O. (Major C.C.Onslow [Cranley Charlton ONSLOW, CB, CMG, CBE, DSO]) had been launched to the attack, information was received by the C.O. that Lt.Col.Thorpe [Edward Ivan de Sausmarez THORPE, CMG, DSO] had called a halt, as he was unable to collect a party sufficiently strong to assault the German position, owing to the darkness, and many serious obstacles, in the nature of ditches varying from 2 to 5 ft. in depth, and from 2 to 5 ft. in width filled with water, running diagonally as well as parallel to our advance, which had broken all cohesion in the attacking force; and also that he could not gain touch with the Cameron Highrs: Just at this time too, 2nd Lt.W.J.Stonier [William John STONIER] reported having arrived at K.4, & meeting with opposition in that neighbourhood, his party had expended all their bombs and had themselves, with a small party under 2nd Lt.C.H.Brewer [Charles Herbert BREWER], been bombed and trench mortared from the direction of K.5. & had had to retire into the communication trench, which they continued to hold. A portion of the Battn. misunderstanding Lt.Col.Thorpe's [Edward Ivan de Sausmarez THORPE, CMG, DSO] order, had in the meantime retired on to our original position. Under these circumstances the C.O. reformed the whole of the Battn. in the original position, from which the attack was launched (L1 and L2), with the exception of the party in the Communication trench; and informed the Brigadier General H.WATTS how matters stood. During these operations Maj.J.Mackenzie V.C. [John MacKENZIE, VC] was killed & the following officers were wounded: - Capt.H.E.Huntriss [Harold Edward HUNTRISS], Lt.A.E.Kuhn [Alfred Edgar KUHN], 2nd Lts. A.Grover [Albert GROVER], R.S.Lardner [Reginald Seymour LARDNER], Lieut. F.V.Parker [Frederick Vivian PARKER] & R.H.Boys [Richard Harvey BOYS]. During the night information was received that a portion of the 4th Camerons had succeeded in entering the enemy trench. Several men were drowned in the ditches, referred to above

The Battle of Aubers

9 May 1915

Operational approach - two pincers north and south of Neuve Chappelle.

The Southern attack was to be made in easterly direction by the 1st and Meerut Divisions, on a 2400-yard front between Chocolat Menier Corner and Port Arthur (1st Division would have an attack frontage of 1600 yards; Meerut 800 yards), with the objective Rue du Marais - Lorgies - Ligny le Grand, incorporating La Cliqueterie (a heavily defended German strongpoint). The 2nd Division was moved up into reserve, from the La Bassée canal sector, leaving behind 4th (Guards) Brigade and receiving in exchange the 5th (London) Brigade of the London Division who moved to the canal in their place.

9 May: the Southern pincer

4.06am: sunrise and all very quiet on this front.

5.00am: British bombardment opens with field guns firing shrapnel at the German wire and howitzers firing High Explosive shells onto front line. German troops are seen peering above their parapet even while this shelling was going on.

5.30am: British bombardment intensifies, field guns switch to HE and also fire at breastworks. The lead battalions of the two assaulting Brigades of 1st Division go over the top to take up a position only 80 yards from German front. (2nd Brigade has 1/Northants and 2/Royal Sussex in front and 2/KRRC and 1/5th Royal Sussex in immediate support; 3rd Brigade has 2/Royal Munster Fusiliers and 2/Welsh in front, with 1/4th Royal Welsh Fusiliers in support). Heavy machine-gun fire cuts the attackers down even on their own ladders and parapet steps, but men continue to press forward as ordered.

In the area of the Indian Corps, the lead battalions of the Dehra Dun Brigade of the Meerut Division (2/2nd Ghurkas, 1/4th and 1st Seaforth Highlanders) were so badly hit by enemy fire that no men got beyond their own parapet and the front-line and communications trenches were soon filled with dead and wounded men.

5.40am: British bombardment lifts off front lines and advances 600 yards; infantry assault begins. Despite the early losses and enemy fire the three Brigades attempted to advance across No Man's Land. They were met by intense crossfire from the German machine-guns, which could not be seen in their ground-level and strongly protected emplacements. Whole lines of men were seen to be hit. Few lanes had been cut in the wire and even where men reached it they were forced to bunch, forming good targets for the enemy gunners. The leading battalions suffered very significant losses, particularly among officers and junior leaders. Around 100 men on the Northants and Munsters got into the German front, but all were killed or captured. The advance of the supporting battalions suffered similarly, and by 6.00am the advance had halted, with hundreds of men pinned down in No Man's Land, unable to advance or fall back.

6.15am: A repeat of the initial bombardment is ordered, with the added difficulty of uncertain locations of the most advanced troops.

7.20am: Major-General Haking (CO, 1st Division) reports failure and asks if he should bring in his last Brigade (1st (Guards)). He offered his opinion that it would not be successful.

Worst infantry casualties in the Southern attack, by battalion 1/ Northamptonshire 560, of which 17 offofficers First wave of 2nd Brigade

October 1917

The first three weeks of October were spent on the west bank of the Yser canal, and partly in training for the attack of October 22nd in the Poelcappelle neighbourhood. On the 8th Leiutenant -Colonel Ferguson and commanding the battalion almost contiously for three years proceeded on six months special leave to England and was suceeded by Mjor E. N.Snepp. The only other notable event was on the 15th when the German bombardment was specially severe causing several causualties. One shell made a direct hit on a 'pill-box' in which was the regimental aid post. The medical officer was wounded two men were killed and one wounded. On the 20th the battalion was in Cane trench ready for the forthcoming attack "

It then goes on to decribe the attack which went in on around 5.50am of the 22nd. The Norfolks went first, leapt frogged by the 10th Essex. Despite the mud all the objectives were achieved.

"The triumphant Essex and Norfolks...........tramped back to hear the whole division ...and General Maxse.... singing their paise. "

Losses were heavy and this was destined to be the Battalions last great action before it's dissolution. Being split up in the new year to go to the 7th and 9th Norfolks

Battle of Estaires

9 - 11 April

This was the first phase of the battle and involved the German forces attacking the defending Portuguese and British Divisions.[1]

In one of the greatest defeats in the military history of Portugal, the 2nd Portuguese Division, approximately 20,000 men commanded by General Gomes da Costa (later President of Portugal), lost about 300 officers and 7,000 men killed, wounded and prisoners, resisting the attack of four German divisions with 50,000 men of 6th German Army, commanded by General Ferdinand von Quast in the first day of the German offensive. Emergency British troops deployed to help the Portuguese defenses were also captured or forced to retreat.

On the flanks of the Portuguese, the British 55th Division (south of the Portuguese) were able to refuse their northern brigade and despite numerous further attacks formed a firm defensive line which limited the effectiveness of the German attack. On the Portuguese northern flank, the British 40th Division were outflanked and attacked from the rear and as a result allowed the attacking German units to extend the breakthrough of the front line further north.

Well after a couple of months away I'm now finally back on Flicker: Exams, Trips away, Relationships, managing my site as well as assisting a few local bird groups has all kept me rather busy lately.

This rather show stopping image of a Pallas's Warbler was one I took whilst on a trip away to Flamborough with good friends Darragh Hudson, Ellis Lucas & Harry Witt. Whilst at Flamborough we were on our way to see a Great Grey Shrike when I report came in of a much closer and showier Pallas's Warbler. So we changed our route and within 10mins of arrival it finally showed with a few Yellow-browed Warblers, Chiffchaffs & Goldcrest and well what else can I say, I'm pretty sure that this is the best rarity photo I've ever taken!

For those who are interested there's a complete write up on my site here for you to read: elliotsbirdingdiaries.wordpress.com/2016/10/12/east-coast...

A sorozat saját szemszögünkből mutatja be azt a lényt, aki mára oly divatossá vált könyvekben, filmekben és tévésorozatokban. A vámpírt. A múlt, a jelen és a jövő alakját, aki halhatatlansággal bír.

In mid May, we drove thirteen hours from Georgia up the Shenandoah Valley and across the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Wayne, PA, arriving at the gates of this great American Garden just before 6:00 PM to take advantage of the 8:00 Friday closing time. I've now put up a set of shots taken quickly over the two hours just before the garden closed that afternoon.

If you have time, you can click on the set and run the SLIDESHOW in FullScreen Mode to follow us around the garden: www.flickr.com/photos/ugardener/sets/72157629915442950/wi...

Here is an EXTENSIVE Plant List that shows the kind of horticultural craftsmanship and attention to detail that makes this garden and the staff who run it so special:

..

Here is a link to the garden's beautiful website, and a quote from it about its history:

www.chanticleergarden.org/

"The Chanticleer estate dates from the early 20th-century, when land along the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad was developed for summer homes to escape the heat of Philadelphia. Adolph Rosengarten, Sr., and his wife Christine chose the Wayne-St. Davids area to build their country retreat. The family's pharmaceutical firm would become part of Merck & Company in the 1920s.

The Rosengartens hired architect and former classmate Charles L. Borie to design the house, which was completed in 1913. Landscape architect Thomas Sears designed the terraces as extensions of the house. A 1924 addition converted the summer home into a year-round residence and the family moved here permanently.

Mr. Rosengarten's humor is evident in naming his home after the estate "Chanticlere" in Thackeray's 1855 novel The Newcomes. The fictional Chanticlere was "mortgaged up to the very castle windows" but "still the show of the county." Playing on the word, which is synonymous with "rooster," the Rosengartens used rooster motifs throughout the estate.

Adolph and Christine gave their two children homes as wedding presents. They purchased a neighboring property for son Adolph, Jr. and his bride Janet Newlin in 1933. It is now the site of the Ruin. Daughter Emily's house, located at today's visitor entrance, was built for her in 1935. It is presently used for offices and classrooms.

Adolph, Jr., bought his sister's portion of the estate following her death in the 1980s. He didn't move into the main house, but used it for entertaining and kept it as it was when the family lived there. The house is open for tours by reservation. Adolph, Jr., left the entire property for the enjoyment and education of the public following his death in 1990. A seven-member Board of Directors, five of whom are Rosengarten relatives, oversees The Chanticleer Foundation. The garden opened to the public in 1993. There are 17 full-time staff, of whom two manage facilities and 12 are gardeners and groundskeepers."

I'm quite tired. The week has been tough. At Wednesday, I was in school about from 8 am till 6 pm. Then I quickly ate something and went to job and leaved there at 9 pm. When I was coming back, the banks of the Aura river just looked amazing as the trees were completely white. The whiteness is derives from the severe frost which suddenly warmed up. That doesn't happen often. I just had to pick up my camera gear (rucksack and tripod) from home. Then I packed all the gear in my back and cycled back to the river. I took some photos (eg. this photo), called to Anssi and then we took a short photowalk. It was midnight when I got back home. Then I answered and read some e-mails and took a shower. I went to sleep after 1 am. Then next day back to school at 8:30 - that's tough, hopefully this photo is worth everything... :D

By the way, I and Anssi weren't the only ones photographing the wonderful winter scenes. I saw three guys with tripods and cameras merely on the way from home to this spot! That's not in any way usual here close to 10 pm in the middle of the week. (:

Shot from this morning macro shoot @ Pashan Lake (Pune) with Urban Prowler (http://www.flickr.com/photos/anshum_m)and Anand J (http://www.flickr.com/photos/anand-j/)

I could barely fit the full insect with complete focus into the 70mm with raynox.. Bit more space on left could have helped!!

Raynox + Pop-up-flash diffuser rocks and so does the Pashan Lake.. You can go there for birding / sunrise / sunset or now for insects!

Another shot from Sunday morning out with the Ramble with Amble gang. As i had took many shots of the groyne in my earlier post i decided i would head for the eroded outlflow structure posts up towards the pier on Blyth Beach. As i splodged back to dryish sand i nnoticed that it was very close to sunset and began running as its quite a distance across to them and also i could do with shedding the winter flab lol. Anyhoo half way there i was dying and as i turned the sun broke the horizon! Not one to lose an oppurtunity i thought what the hell and planted the tripod if not only to rest on it haha. I took 2 shots here at different exposures with some blending in mind. Back in Photoshop i have opened both exposures then unveiled the darker exposure in the horizon area using a 50& Opacity right on the horizon then faded it back with a 30% opacity either side of the central area. Ive had to drop saturation abit to try and control the sun (must get a Reverse Grad) and messed a touch with curves and an unsharo mask.

What a morning this was! Thanks again to all of the Ramble Posse for being so friendly and helpfull and sorry for uploading yet another Blyth shot as youre all probably sick of them haha.

Location i shot from... The 2 areas i ran between are at the very bottom to very top of this Flash Earth shot VVV :O

"Che altro ti resta se non l'uomo nudo

che io vedo ogni giorno

quel pazzo padrone,

poeta o predone che vive sull'ultima trave.

Si frega le mani poi ride, o non ride...

saltella leggero

dal trave a una curva

ma oggi l'ho visto tuffarsi nel vuoto

così d'improvviso

però non so dire

se urlasse o ridesse. "

''El Nini siguió avanzando por la calleja solitaria, arrimado a las casas para eludir el lodazal. Restregaba la moneda que portaba en la mano contra los muros de adobe y al llegar a la primera esquina examinó el brillo nacido en el borde con pueril fruición. El barrizal era allí más espeso, pero el niño lo atravesó sin vacilar, sumergiendo sus pies desnudos en el cieno entreverado de estiércol y escíbalos caprinos, en la pestilente agua estancada de los relejes.''

The Monument Solomon Built II

Don't be confused; it's not the Washington Monument. It's the Bunker/Breeds Hill Monument, commemorating the [misnamed] Battle of Bunker Hill. I was here as part of the Boston Photo Mob walk that I mentioned in the past couple posts.

For the curious, the Bunker Hill Monument is roughly about 40% as tall as the Washington Monument and is indeed located atop Breeds Hill. Solomon Willard was the designer of the monument and according to the Secretary of the Building Committee, "worked like a dog" to get the construction completed.

The coloration of the photograph is largely due to the use of filters and not so much due to post processing, although the post did increase the impact of what was already there.

This is a colour print I did in the 1970s when Desi was about 10. She loved to dance. The fellow was a distant relation of Kitty's and a pro song and dance actor who was visiting with us in Wimbledon.

I brought the print back recently from Hungary and decided to scan it.

This is for the techie visitors.

I have quite an old HP Scanjet 6300 flatbad scanner. There is no driver for it under OS X but as the iMac is my main system I eventually obtained a copy of VueScan which can drive it. For whatever reason the last few scans (saved as TIF) although looked OK in the scanner preview ended up very rough in PS or LR. Finally I fired up my equally old Windows desktop and scanned the picture using the latest (ie early 2000) proper HP driver and got a much better result. Further oddity - I am running Windows 7 RC on it. So far it looks promising.

Messing about on the pier seeing if i can get vision for and pull off long exposures. All in all a great day despite getting drenched twice in one day in one set of clothes. It will be a miracle if i dont catch cold.

Shot with Singh Ray Vari-ND at max with color combo CPL also by Singh Ray, now thats 10 stops of light stopping power for those that are counting. I also used a 2 stop lee hard grad for the sky matched at the horizon. Some 13 seconds in camera on a tripod of course and then at home straight RAW conversion and then toned in Silvereffex. All in all round 3mins of editing- nothing quite beats filters for not spending an entire night behind a computer screen :)

Forgot to mention this was shot with a canon 5d and 17-40

BTW this is Llandudno Pier, North Wales. To the right in the distance is the off shore wind farm.

I really should dedicate this shot to my wonderful girlfriend who tolerates my photographic hobby/obsession and who patiently waited on the pier while i took 10 mins to set this shot up and then another 10 waiting for enough people to walk through the shot. Thank you hunny xx

This photo was taken at sunset in Lincoln City, Oregon, USA. This is a beautiful beach on the Central Oregon Coast.

About this photo: We stayed in a beach apartment for 1 week in Lincoln City. When we arrived around dinner time at this place it was cloudy. After dinner we decided to go for a walk on the beach and at the end of the evening we were treated to a beautiful sunset as it started to clear up. What a gorgeous evening that was!

As the sun was setting I wondered down to the beach to enjoy the sunset and take some photos. At that point I remembered my "panorama" button on my camera and figured it was time try it out again as I haven't used it that much yet. I liked the results! I hope you do too! :)

Some information on Lincoln City and the beach: Lincoln City is nestled between seven miles of sandy beaches and a 680 acre scenic lake on the central Oregon Coast. And while it's a charming resort town, it's also a paradise of beauty, history and adventure.

The mighty Pacific Ocean greets the beach along seven gorgeous miles in Lincoln City. The beauty and activities along the seashore change with the seasons, adding spice and variety. There are excellent locations for wave, whale, sunset and storm watching, and the beach is a treasure trove for collecting driftwood, agates, shells and floats. Large rocks emerging from the sea create perfect pockets for tide pooling during low tides, and beach hiking, surfing, windsurfing and fishing challenge adventure seekers. Fifteen public beach accesses welcome those who wish to indulge!

The Oregon Coast is the coast of the U.S. state of Oregon along the Pacific Ocean, constituting the western border of the state. Stretching 583km/362mi from the city of Astoria to the California border, the Oregon Coast is unique in that the entire coast is public land. Oregon law prohibits private ownership of coastline property.

The Oregon Coast is often divided into three regions

•The North Coast—from the Washington border at Astoria to Lincoln City.

•The Central Coast—from Lincoln City to Reedsport.

•The South Coast—from Reedsport to the California border, just south of Brookings.

There are no large cities on the coast, mainly due to the lack of deep harbors with access to the inland agricultural areas. The largest metropolitan area consists of the bordering cities of Coos Bay and North Bend on the South Coast. This area has a population of approximately 25,000 people. There is only one continuous highway along the coastline, the U.S. Route 101. The relative isolation of the coast from nearby large population centers has given the coast a reputation for being somewhat rustic, being a mixture of old logging towns, fishing villages, seasonal resorts, and artists' colonies. Tourism, fishing and logging are the major industries on the coast. The coastal region's popularity, combined with the fact that there are only a few two-lane roads from the more populated areas in the Willamette Valley contributes to traffic to the north and central coasts being named the worst tourist traffic in the United States. A few weeks ago I posted The Doors of Perception. I thought it was a good result overall but I wasn't entirely satisfied with it.

This is a shot from another angle and a bit darker. I wanted to emphasize the rays of light breaking through the pilings to better visualize the famous quote from Aldous Huxley:

''If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern."

Lumbier, Navarra (Spain).

ENGLISH

The Foz de Lumbier is carved out of the limestone rock by the river Irati at the western end of the Leyre range of mountains, at the foot of the Navarrese Pyrenees. It is one of the most spectacular gorges in Navarre, a landscape created over millions of years by the waters of the river Irati, which have left their mark on this sanctuary of nature day by day. The gorge was declared a Nature Reserve in 1987.

Lumbier is a narrow and small gorge, just 1,300 metres long, but of spectacular beauty. Its vertical walls reach a maximum height of 150 metres and large birds of prey live in the cracks and ledges, with species such as griffon vultures whose flights will accompany you in your visit to the gorge. It is also a refuge for foxes, boar, badgers and owls, and is strewn with gall and kermes oaks and bushes such as thyme, lavender and gorse that hang from the cracks, vegetation that is transformed into woods of poplars, willows and ash trees at the entry and exit of the gorge.

In contrast to many other canyons, you can walk through Lumbier along an easy track that runs along the bottom of the cliffs for 2.6 kilometres. The route was created for the old Irati train (the first electric train in Spain) that linked Pamplona with Sangüesa between 1911 and 1955.

The signposted path runs along the river and crosses the rock through two tunnels (206 and 160 metres long) that do not have artificial light. Towards the end of the path the route goes around the rock and reaches the remains of the Puente del Diablo (Devil's Bridge), which was built in the 16th century with a raised arch 15 metres above the river. It was destroyed by the French in 1812 during the War of Independence, and owes its name to a legend that says that its builder asked the devil for help to finish it.

CASTELLANO

This amazing Tugboat is a veteran of the Pearl Harbor attack, 7 December 1941. She served valiantly during the attack, operating without stopping, from that Sunday morning until Wednesday, fighting fires, rescuing sailors, saving the USS Oglala by pushing her away from the doomed Arizona, and helping the battleship Nevada to ground herself to avoid sinking in the Pearl Harbor entrance channel. She fought the fires on the burning Battleships USS Arizona www.navsource.org/archives/01/013940b.jpg and USS Nevada upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/45/USS_Nevada_2n....

G

HOGA and her crew received a special citation from Admiral Chester Nimitz for her heroic work in those dark days. In the following link she is shown with the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-5) at Pearl Harbor after the Battle of Coral Sea, 27 May 1942. After repairs, Yorktown departed on 30 May to take part in the Battle of Midway. The tug Hoga (YT-146) is in the center foreground. She later went on to serve the City of Oakland as a fireboat from 1948 to 1994! She is currently awaiting movement to Little Rock Arkansas to serve her days out as a museum ship, befitting her 60 years of continuous service. The ship was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

As of April 2014, The Hoga was moved out of the mothball fleet to the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard (Vallejo, California) for hull repairs and painting. The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum shows her on their website, but I couldn't see her on a Google map. As far as I know she's still at Mare Island. It all comes down to money.

Happy UPDATE Post Decommissioning! On July 28, 2005, the United States Navy officially transferred USS Hoga to the City of North Little Rock. On November 23, 2015, Hoga arrived at the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum in North Little Rock, Arkansas. aimmuseum.org/uss-hoga/

The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park (Catalan: Parc Natural de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa) is a natural park area covering a Holocene volcanic field (also known as the Olot volcanic field) in Catalonia, northeastern Spain. The volcanos, of which there are about forty within the park, are no longer active, with the last eruption (Croscat) occurring about 11,000 years ago.[1] However, the region is still seismically active, and a large earthquake in 1428 caused damage to buildings and twenty deaths in Barcelona, 90 kilometres (56 mi) to the south.

The park covers 12,093.02 hectares, and includes territory from eleven municipalities in the comarca of Garrotxa.[2] The built-up areas of Olot, Santa Pau, Sant Joan les Fonts and Castellfollit de la Roca are completely surrounded by the park. Including these urban areas, the population of the park is more than 40,000 people, and the economic development of the zone is one of the objectives of the park management, while trying to avoid the damage caused by quarrying, urban sprawl and illegal waste disposal. Some 980.86 ha of the park, including the best preserved volcanic cones, are fully protected as nature reserves.

Description

Designed by Donald L. Grieb Associates, Architect, the Conservatory is composed of three beehive-shaped glass domes that span 140 feet (43 m) in diameter and are 85 feet (26 m) high. They are properly referred to as the world's first conoidal domes. They cover 45,000 square feet (4,200 m2) of display area and were constructed in stages from 1959 to 1967. Locally, they are commonly called the "three-breasted lady".

Connecting the three domes is a central lobby area, which was extensively redesigned in the summer of 2008. A smaller service dome behind the Conservatory holds replacement plants and an orchid collection. This section is not open to the public.

Show Dome

The Show Dome opened in December 1964. It hosts four seasonal shows and one holiday exhibit held annually in December for visitors to enjoy. Each show has a theme chosen based on cultural (such as Japanese, German and French), literary (Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol"), or historical interest (Colonial Williamsburg and the History of Herb Gardening, for example). In most recent years, the Winter Show has featured an extensive garden railway display put on with the cooperation of many Wisconsin Model Railroad club members. It has become one of the most popular displays during the year and is one of the largest indoor Garden Railroad displays in the Midwest.

Tropical Dome

The Tropical Dome opened in February 1966. The Tropical Dome features nearly 1,000 species of plants, including many economically important fruit bearing plants such as banana, papaya, ackee, guava, avocado, and cacao. One of the cacao trees is over 60 years old and was transplanted from the old Conservatory. It still sets fruit each year. Hardwoods include big-leaf, little-leaf, and African mahoganies, ebony and lignum vitae. A rare curare vine can also be found growing.

The dome is seasonally decorated with a wide variety of blooming plants, including a number of award winning orchids. The center of the Dome is dominated by a large kapok tree. It is one of the tallest trees under glass. At one time, its height was up to 95 feet (29 m) high, but is now kept at a more manageable 60 feet (18 m). In addition to the plants, the Tropical Dome is home to a number of colorful birds.

Arid Dome

The Arid Dome opened in November 1967. It displays a wide variety of plants from the Americas and Africa. The American section contains a large number of plants native to the Sonoran Desert, including shrubs, trees, annuals and bulbs, as well as the familiar cacti. The African section has aloes, crassulas, euphorbias, along with the unusual Welwitschia plant, which has only two continuously growing leaves and may live for over a thousand years.

Another section hosts the succulent flora of Madagascar and includes plants such as Euphorbia, Pachypodium, Adenia, Didierea, Alluaudia, and Operculicarya. Many of them were grown from seed obtained in Madagascar. This area was formally dedicated on September 8, 1984 by Leon Rajaobelina, the Ambassador from Madagascar.

In August 2006, an Encephalartos ferox produced a double red-colored cone. It is only the second time in over 30 years this has happened. The cones are expected to last several months, most likely until spring brings warmer weather.

The Conservatory was closed during the summer of 2008 to facilitate the replacement of 800 cracked glass panels. The lobby was remodeled and a $500,000 donation allowed for a new external and internal lighting system. The Conservatory re-opened to large crowds on October 20, 2008. A series of concerts was held on Thursday nights through November. Several other improvements include a re-configured parking lot, outside landscaping and a new educational center scheduled to open in fall of 2009. Future plans call for a greenhouse complex at the rear of the Conservatory to replace current off site facilities.

Agostino "il Magnifico" Chigi (1465-1520), the richest man in Europe, once lived in this sumptuous villa built for him by the architect Baldassare Peruzzi between 1508 and 1511. Some of Rome's grandest feasts and parties, the likes of which were unknown since the days of imperial Rome, were staged here, often for popes, diplomats, artists, philosophers, and even high-priced courtesans.

Even before this outrageous banker came to live here, the site was famous. Once it was the country villa of Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra stayed here in 44 B.C. with their illegitimate child, Caesarion.

Chigi was Raphael's patron and friend, and he called upon this great artist to help decorate part of his villa, along with such towering figures as Francesco Penni, Giulo Romano, Sebastian del Piombo, and "Il Sodoma" (so called because of his sexual practices). Together these artists created a series of paintings that stand as one of the treasures of the Renaissance, especially the Loggia of Cupid and Psyche.

Also stunning is the Galatea from 1511 -- Raphael painted Nereus's sea-maiden riding in a shell drawn by pug-nosed dolphins in a frolicking romp. Paintings depicting scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses are by Sebastiano del Piombo; frescoes of the constellations on the ceiling are by Baldassare Peruzzi.

Upstairs you can see Peruzzi's masterful Salone delle Prospettive, an early example of trompe l'oeil views of Rome and Il Sodoma's masterpiece Scenes from the Life of Alexander the Great.

Cathedral of Cologne

Cologne, Nordrhein-Westfalen

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom, officially Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria) is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Joachim Meisner, and is under the administration of the archdiocese of Cologne. It is renowned as a monument of Christianity, of German Catholicism in particular, of Gothic architecture, and of the faith and perseverance of the people of the city in which it stands. It is dedicated to Saint Peter and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The cathedral is a World Heritage Site, one of the best-known architectural monuments in Germany, and Cologne's most famous landmark, described by UNESCO as an "exceptional work of human creative genius". Cologne Cathedral is one of the world's largest churches and the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe. For four years, 1880-84, it was the tallest structure in the world, until the completion of the Washington Monument. It has the second-tallest church spires, only surpassed by the single spire of Ulm Cathedral, completed 10 years later in 1890. Because of its enormous twin spires, it also presents the largest façade of any church in the world.

The choir of Cologne Cathedral, measured between the piers, also holds the distinction of having the largest height to width ratio of any Medieval church, 3.6:1, exceeding even Beauvais Cathedral which has a slightly higher vault.

Construction of the Gothic church began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, until 1880 to complete – a period of over 600 years. It is 144.5 metres long, 86.5 m wide and its two towers are 157 m tall.

Cologne Cathedral, despite having been left incomplete during the medieval period, eventually became unified as "a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value" and "a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe", as was befitting a worship-place of the Holy Roman Emperor and the traditional shrine of the Three Kings.

Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley than to those who inhabit the mountain?" As we were all standing around waiting for the owl to do something other than just posing on the treetop, a mouse decided to take walk on the snow bank only 5 feet from one of the women photographers. Knowing that this was going to be a possible photo opportunity, we yelled over to her to move away, knowing that it was only matter of seconds and the owl would spot that mouse. The mouse had its own idea, he was going to run out on the road. This would not be the best spot to take a picture, so one of the photographers ran out in the road, grabbed the mouse and threw it out in the snow covered field. It only took a second before the owl saw it, swooped down, picked it up and flew off with it. It all happened so fast that I was only able to snap off a few shots. I’ve posted one of the shots below.

I know this shot is a lot flawed. Its not straight, its colors aren’t balanced (too much warmth; but blame that to the coffee :P), the flower is shriveled :P, so on & so forth…

I’m uploading this picture anyways because I couldn’t resist sharing that I was able to use two suggestions given to me earlier & know what? They worked :D

So here's to Ana: Thank you for the suggestion of a non-black bg. Yes, it does help in adding to the depth of the image. xx =D (Next time I will try more lighter colored bg’s.)

And, here’s to Samyak: I couldn’t DARE to light a cigarette at home :P so, I lit some essence sticks, drank the coffee & dropped the essence sticks in the cup for the smoke :D. Thank you for the idea.

Have a fantastic weekend. :)

(I am sorry that I haven’t been around lately. I have a lot happening at work & at home; and 24 hours just don’t seem to be enough. This “dormancy” of mine will continue through the next week too. Please excuse my absence. I sure will catch up once I’m back.)

Progression of the Total Lunar Eclipse on 21 February 2008. These photos were taken over a period of 2 hours (3:30am to 5:30 am). We weren't fortunate enough to see the full recovery in Africa, since the sun rised before it was done. View Larger Version Here

Photos taken with a Canon 400D, a borrowed 100-400mm lens & two tripods (one for camera and one to support the lens). Photos taken in Shutter Priority, also used mirror lockup function and self timer. All the photos except for the red one was taken at 1/2000s exposure, the red one (fully eclipsed) was taken at 1s exposure.

The planetary shift was quite bothersome (especially if you're half asleep like I was).. I had to adjust the tripod approx. every 3 shots. It was definately all worth it though. The view through the lens was AMAZING - way better than with the naked eye.

Maresme's territory occupies a long and narrow area between the Mediterranean Sea and the hills of Serralada Litoral (Catalonia's coastal mountains), and specifically Montnegre's and Corredor's hills in the northern half and Sant Mateu's hills in the southern half. This particular shape has conditioned both the geography and the history of this comarca. Probably the main distinct elements of its geography are the characteristic rieres (torrents). These short, intermittent water streams, which cross the comarca transversally almost every hundred meters, produce powerful and dangerous floods when it rains.

Canet des de els Tarongers

Maresme has been historically very well connected with the rest of the comarca as well as with Barcelona thanks to old Camí Ral (Royal Way) (actual N-II main road) and railroad (The Barcelona–Mataró railroad route, finished in 1848, was the first ever in all the Iberian Peninsula). Communications were enhanced in recent years with the construction of the C-32's Barcelona–Mataró section (1969), which was the first autopista (highway) ever in Spain, and its subsequent enlargement, the Mataró-Palafolls's section (1995).
