Phelsuma laticauda laticauda (Gold Dust Day Gecko)
Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii
I first spotted this colorful gecko while lounging poolside in Kauai. As I was laying down I saw it dart around underneath the deck above the planter that was behind me. The next day I decided to bring my camera to the pool in case it made another appearance. Not only did I see it again, but there were two. One was considerably larger (about 6 inches long; the smaller one was thinner and about 1-2 inches shorter). I'm not sure if one was a male and the other was a female, or if the smaller one was younger. Based on their behavior I'm guessing that it was a male and female specimen (the bigger one seemed to be chasing around and trying to attract the attention of the smaller one). After researching the identity of this lizard I learned that it was originally from Madagascar, the Comoros Islands, and the Farquhar atoll in Seychelles. According to geckoweb.org it had been introduced to the Hawaiian islands in 1974 when a student released eight specimens on the University of Hawaii campus. Gold Dust Day Geckos feed on small insects, nectar, pollen, sweet sap, and juices from over-ripe fruit.

Perhaps the hardest damn animal ive ever tried to shoot. They dip the moment you come close. I really want to get more of these because they are stunning little creatures, but also cunning, timid and infuriating. #madagascargolddustdaygecko #golddustdaygecko #madagascargecko #gecko #insitu #phelsuma #HELLsuma #phelsumalaticauda #hawaii #bigisland #herpinghawaii #bigislandherps

Phelsuma madagascariensis is a species of day gecko that lives in Madagascar. It is among the most widespread day geckos and is found in a wide range of habitats. With a length of up to 30.5 centimetres (12.0 in), it is also the largest day gecko in Madagascar.
Madagascar day gecko (Phelsuma madagascariensis madagascariensis) is a diurnal subspecies of geckos. It lives on the eastern coast of Madagascar and typically inhabits rainforests and dwells on trees. The Madagascar day gecko feeds on insects, fruit and nectar.

Mauritius 2013. This day gecko is one of 5 endemics, and can be found in coastal and lowland areas of Mauritius, but is absent from the central south coast. It is easily identified from the other day geckos by dark brown/black stripes that border a white stripe, which begins behind the eye and along the neck. The other distinguishable marking is a red ‘T’ on the top of its head. The colours darken and the black strengthens when they are cold! We saw these at Bras D'eau NR and Ile Aux Aigrettes.

I grew up on Oahu and caught a lot of non-native Green Anoles (Anolis carolinensis) as a kid - a major reason I love herps and nature in general. *Maybe* saw one Madagascar Gold Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda) on the Big Island in the early 90s, but that was it. Now, they're everywhere.
Startlingly beautiful, but it's amazing how quickly they've spread. (I should note that Hawaii has no native terrestrial reptiles, so every lizard you see is there because it came with humans.)

This lizard typically reaches a total length of about 28 cm, though larger specimens have been found. The body colour is bright green or, rarely, bluish green. A red stripe extends from the nostril to the eye. On the back there are red coloured dots or bars. These red markings are quite variable, and in some cases, completely absent, though the line extending from the nostril to the eye is always present. Some specimens may have small blue spots. Adult specimens may have large sacs on their necks. These are stored calcium sacks. Young individuals of the species often exhibit much more red than their parents, but as time passes, many of the markings fade, to leave those that will remain until the gecko dies. The underside of these animals is a creamy white ranging to an eggy yellow. A stressed animal is more likely to have darker colouration, making it appear as though there are orange parts to the red colouration, and the green appears far darker. The Madagascar Day Gecko (Phelsuma madagascariensis madagascariensis) is a diurnal subspecies of geckos. This lizard is one of the largest living day geckos. Madagascar day gecko can reach a total length of about 22 cm, up to 30 cm. The body color is light green or bluish green. The skin between the scales often has a light color. A rust-coloured stripe extends from the nostril to behind the eye.
These geckos do not have eyelids, and they have flattened toe pads.
It lives on the eastern coast of Madagascar and typically inhabits rainforests and dwells on trees. These day geckos feed on many arthropods (insects and arachnids) as well as some fruit mashed. They also like to lick hard fruit, pollen and nectar.
