While looking through my phelsuma set, I noticed that there weren't really any good shots, so I took this one which isn't really good either, but I like it anyway. She is such a sweetheart. Bonita on bamboo. Nikon d50, Kenko extension tube, 165mm, 1/13s, f/7.1, ISO 200.

Finally I managed to take pictures of a hatching Phelsuma grandis!

I always have to whistle the Jurassic Park theme :).

A close up shot of a Madagascar day gecko eating a large cockroach. These are the largest day geckos in Madagascar. They are quite common and can be found in a variety of habitats across the island. They seem to do very well in areas that have been altered by people - this particular animal was one of several that could be easily found right near the kitchen of a hotel we stayed at near Montagne d'Ambre in Northern Madagascar.

The Madagascar day gecko (Phelsuma madagascariensis madagascariensis) is a diurnal species of gecko. It lives on the eastern coast of Madagascar and typically inhabits rainforests and dwells on trees. The Madagascar day gecko feeds on insects, fruit and nectar.

This lizard is one of the largest living day geckos. It can reach a total length of about 22 cm (8.7 in). The body color is light green or bluish green. The skin between the scales often has a light color. A rust-coloured stripe extends from the nostril to behind the eye. On the back there are brownish or red-brick coloured dots which may form a thin line along the mid back. These geckos do not have eyelids, and they have flattened toe pads.

P. m. magascariensis is often found on trees along the edges of forests. They also inhabit local huts and banana trees in the east coast of Madagascar because it has a humid and warm climate.

These day geckos feed on many arthropods (insects and arachnids) as well as some fruit matter (mashed). They also like to lick hard, tart fruit, pollen and nectar.

Madagascar Exotic (also known as the Peyrieras Butterfly Farm, Peyrieras Nature Farm and Mandraka Reptile Farm) is a small privately run reserve at Marozevo, on National Road N2, 75 km (47 mi) east of Antananarivo, between the towns of Manjakandriana and Moramanga. It is a popular tourist stop between Antananarivo and Madagascar's Andasibe-Mantadia National Park.

It was founded and owned by the French entomologist and naturalist André Peyriéras, which is why it is also known as the Reserve Peyrieras.

The collection includes many reptiles (chameleons, iguanas, geckos, frogs), batraciens (amphibians), crocodiles and papillons (butterflies). The adjacent forest area supports families of relocated and habituated Verreaux's sifaka and common brown lemur which provide opportunities to photograph them close up at feeding times.

Most of the reptiles and other species are held within several large caged buildings and greenhouses, which tourists may enter when accompanied by a guide. A group of Coquerel's sifaka return daily to be fed and photography by the tourists.

Phelsuma laticauda laticauda (Gold Dust Day Gecko)

Kalaheo, Kauai, Hawaii

I first spotted this colorful gecko while lounging poolside in Kauai. As I was laying down I saw it dart around underneath the deck above the planter that was behind me. The next day I decided to bring my camera to the pool in case it made another appearance. Not only did I see it again, but there were two. One was considerably larger (about 6 inches long; the smaller one was thinner and about 1-2 inches shorter). I'm not sure if one was a male and the other was a female, or if the smaller one was younger. Based on their behavior I'm guessing that it was a male and female specimen (the bigger one seemed to be chasing around and trying to attract the attention of the smaller one). After researching the identity of this lizard I learned that it was originally from Madagascar, the Comoros Islands, and the Farquhar atoll in Seychelles. According to geckoweb.org it had been introduced to the Hawaiian islands in 1974 when a student released eight specimens on the University of Hawaii campus. Gold Dust Day Geckos feed on small insects, nectar, pollen, sweet sap, and juices from over-ripe fruit.
