And travellers now, within that valley
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh - but smile no more.

Crater Lake National Park, OR
Continuing my "non-classical" Crater Lake shots, here's a close-up of phantom ship floating in a reflection of the caldera walls.
Phantom Ship (left) is one of Crater Lake's two islands, it is 170 feet (51.8 meters) high, 500 feet (152 meters) long, and 200 feet (60.9 meters) wide. At first glance, the dark, jagged island just offshore (caldera rim wall on right) calls to mind the image of a ghostly ship with tall masts and drooping sails. Phantom Ship is actually a resistant remnant of an ancient volcanic cone that was engulfed in the growing Mazama volcano. This vent shared the underground chanber that fed Mount Mazama and was part of its early mountain building phase. These rocky spires remained after Mount Mazama's massive eruption and collapse, displaying the oldest rock in the Crater Lake basin over 400,000 years old. -National Park Service

I found this rock pile while out for a drive in southern Utah in the fall of 2017, but I didn't end up taking this panorama until I was at this same location about 6 months later, last spring. It's hard to imagine the scale, but that boulder in the left foreground was about 3 meters high. In other words, huge. I had hoped that the spring would give me a great view of the Milky Way at this spot, and it didn't disappoint. You can see Jupiter in the upper right, and Saturn is just peeking around the butte on the right side.

What a sight!

I've found a new community of Phantom Crane Flies along the trail. It appears the community will continue to grow.
In glorious sunlight, the island known as the Phantom Ship is anything but a will o' the wisp. However, this shot gives a good impression of the island which is over 50m high. It is a remnant of a 400,000-year-old volcanic dyke and makes one of only two islands inside Crater Lake, Oregon.
The surface of the lake is some 250m below the position on the crater rim from which I took this shot.
Scanned from a negative.
:~) Don't you just love the reflections off of luxury vehicles ?? (no longer called cars....they are elevated into the realm of Autos and vehicles LOL)
Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday !!
Now I only need to buy me some of these pretty expensive 8x16 tiles to make a nice carrier deck diorama.
Sometimes I still feel it,
the weight of your hand on my shoulder,
a warmth that ghosts the chill.
Wind moves through the same space now,
whispering where you once stood,
and I turn, foolish and faithful,
to meet what isn’t there.
Waterfall, Phantom Creek, Phantom Canyon, Grand Canyon NP. This small waterfall is tucked away more than a vertical mile below the North Rim. Phantom Creek is a beautiful little tributary of Bright Angel Creek.
Named for its ghostship-like appearance on foggy days, but not today. This 500 foot long island sits off the SE shore of Crater Lake.

A polished quartz point containing a multi-layered chlorite phantom - only two sides of the phantom are thickly layered, however.

Phantom Island, a captivating enigma nestled within the majestic expanse of Crater Lake National Park, has long captured the imagination of adventurers and naturalists alike. Rising like an ethereal mirage from the cerulean depths of Crater Lake, this elusive island is a geological marvel, believed to be a submerged volcanic pinnacle. Its fleeting appearances, often shrouded in mist and mystery, have inspired tales of folklore and wonder. Phantom Island stands as a symbol of the enigmatic beauty that defines Crater Lake and the enduring allure of the natural world's secrets.
One of my treasures: the first Sunday Phantom comic strip (1939). This one recounts the Phantom's origin. Considering its age, it's in pretty damn good condition.
