This ceramic disk is the sixth of seven lining the wall of the Passage. This middle to late Proto-Historic period design represents SO-LE-GE-I, or Winged Serpent, who flew down from the sky. He was the source of ancient wisdom and traditional teachings for the Cherokees. The motif was used during the times of cross-cultural exchange and signifies the return to traditional customs to stop the loss of ancient knowledge and more tribal lands.
(See links). John Oliver (1793–1863), a veteran of the War of 1812, and his wife Lucretia Frazier (1795–1888) were the first permanent European settlers in Cades Cove. The Olivers, originally from Carter County, arrived in 1818, accompanied by Joshua Jobe, who had initially persuaded them to settle in the cove. While Jobe returned to Carter County, the Olivers stayed, struggling through the winter and subsisting on dried pumpkin given to them by friendly Cherokees. Jobe returned in the Spring of 1819 with a herd of cattle in tow, and gave the Olivers two milk cows to ease their complaints.
The John Oliver Cabin was constructed c. 1822-1823 by the cove's first permanent European settlers. Dunn reports that the Olivers spent the winter of 1818-1819 in an abandoned Cherokee hut, and built a crude structure the following year. The Oliver Cabin was built as a replacement for this first crude structure, which was located a few meters behind the cabin.
Cades Cove is an isolated valley located in the Tennessee section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA. The valley was home to numerous settlers before the formation of the national park. Today Cades Cove, the single most popular destination for visitors to the park, attracts more than two million visitors a year because of its well preserved homesteads, scenic mountain views, and abundant display of wildlife. The Cades Cove Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The John Oliver Place in Cades Cove is a log home was built around 1820. No nails were used to build the cabin and mud was used for insulation. The John Oliver Place is one of the most popular stops on the Cades Cove Loop Road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The cabin visitors to Cades Cove see today at the location known as John Oliver Place is actually the "honeymoon house" John Oliver constructed for his son. When John and Lucretia Oliver arrived as the first white settlers in Cades Cove in 1818, they spent their first winter in an abandoned Cherokee hut.
In 1822, they constructed a dwelling of their own, located approximately 50 yards in front of their first "home" in Cades Cove. Even the shingles on the roof were made from trees. The Olivers purchased their own land in 1826, and the cabin site remained in the family until the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The site can be accessed today via a 10-minute uphill stroll from the loop road.
John and Lucretia Oliver, the original owners of the cabin, were the first permanent white settlers in Cades Cove. When they moved to Cades Cove in the 1820s, the only road into the cove was a primitive trail and there was not a working grist mill. In the absence of a grist mill, the Olivers had to beat corn into cornmeal using only a mortar and pestle. During the early years, Lucretia feared she would starve to death.
Now, the Oliver cabin is one of the most visited historical structures in the National Park. The cabin is held together by gravity and notched corners – it does not need pegs or nails to hold it together. Although the National Park Service eventually took control of the structure, it was one of the last historical structures to be vacated. The cabin remained in the Oliver family for over 100 years!

Born in England, artist Louise Peterson began sculpting Great Danes when she moved to Colorado in 1998, and her Dane was the only model in her studio. What results are fine classical renderings of dogs that are often both humorous and elegant. Louise is a huge animal lover, and future plans include a retirement home for senior Great Danes. At the center of the Chinati Foundation's permanent collection are 100 untitled works in mill aluminum by Donald Judd installed in two former artillery sheds. The size and scale of the buildings determined the nature of the installation, and Judd adapted the buildings specifically for this purpose. He replaced derelict garage doors with long walls of continuous squared and quartered windows which flood the spaces with light. Judd also added a vaulted roof in galvanized iron on top of the original flat roof, thus doubling the buildings' height. The semi-circular ends of the roof vaults were to be made of glass.
Each of the 100 works has the same outer dimensions (41 x 51 x 72 inches), although the interior is unique in every piece. The Lippincott Company of Connecticut fabricated the works, which were installed over a four-year period from 1982 through 1986. Funding for the project was provided by the Dia Art Foundation.

Queenstown (Māori: Tahuna) is a resort town in Otago in the south-west of New Zealand's South Island.
It is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu, a long thin Z-shaped lake formed by glacial processes, and has spectacular views of nearby mountains such as The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and just above the town; Ben Lomond and Queenstown Hill.
The area was known to Māori before Europeans arrived. The first European to see Lake Wakatipu was Nathanael Chalmers who was guided by Reko, the chief of the Tuturau, over the Waimea Plains and up the Mataura River in September 1853. Evidence of stake nets, baskets for catching eels, spears and ashes indicated the Glenorchy area was visited by Māori. It is likely Ngāi Tahu Māori visited Queenstown en route to collect Pounamu (greenstone), although no evidence of permanent settlement is known.
There are various apocryphal accounts of how the town was named, the most popular suggesting that a local gold digger exclaimed that the town was "fit for Queen Victoria". Many Queenstown streets bear names from the gold mining era (such as Camp Street) and some historic buildings remain. William's Cottage, the Lake Lodge of Ophir, Queenstown Police Station, and St Peter's Anglican Church lie close together in a designated historic precinct.
A resort town, Queenstown boasted 220 adventure tourism activities in 2012. Skiing and snowboarding, jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking, skateboarding, tramping, paragliding, sky diving and fly fishing are all popular.

“Matriarch” was created by Chattanooga artist Isaac Duncan. In response to the origin of the title of the piece, Duncan says, “We all know who rules the roost.” The sculpture was part of Art on Main, a rotating sculpture exhibition along Main Street, and was purchased for the City's collection with private funds. Director-General Ahmet Üzümcü hosted an informal retreat attended by Permanent Representatives to the OPCW to discuss the future direction of the Organisation. Over 80 ambassadors attended the day-long event, which was held in the town of Noordwijk close to The Hague.

A continuación reunión del Grupo del Partido Popular Europeo en el Comité de las Regiones para hablar de los retos inmediatos de la UE: el #Brexit y sus efectos, el secesionismo, las elecciones europeas como posible vía de crecimiento del extremismo y la lucha contra las desigualdades
Reunión con el Embajador Representante Permanente de España ante la Unión Europea, Pablo García-Berdoy, en la sede de la Representación Permanente de España ante la UE, donde he firmado un convenio para trasladar la sede la Oficina de la Comunidad de Madrid en Bruselas al edificio de la Representación de España y así ahorrar más de 100.000 euros al año.
Posteriormente he firmado con el presidente del Comité Europeo de las Regiones, Karl- Heinz Lambertz la ‘Alianza por la cohesión’, una apuesta por el mantenimiento de los fondos comunitarios para avanzar en el reequilibrio de la UE más allá de 2020 y he tenido el honor de participar en el Pleno del Comité Europeo de las Regiones en el debate sobre el impacto del Brexit para los entes locales y regionales de la UE, con la ponencia: ‘La dimensión socio-económica del Brexit’
El viernes 1 de diciembre reunión con el Comisario Europeo de Investigación, Ciencia e Innovación, Carlos Moedas al que pedimos más apoyo a los programas de I+D+i de la Comunidad de Madrid y encuentro con el Comisario Europeo de Ayuda Humanitaria y Gestión de Crisis, Christos Stylianides, para reforzar la cooperación en materia de emergencias.
Por ultimo me he reunido con empresarios e inversores en Bruselas. La Comunidad de Madrid se ha convertido en el mejor destino no solo para invertir, sino también para vivir y convivir.
