Not the remnants of a shipwreck as one might like to imagine but those of 17th century sea defences. There are examples of these all along the Thames Estuary. Oak timbers supported a mound of chalk and ragstone upon which an earth wall faced with stone was built. It took until the mid 20th century and a major disaster before they realised these structures probably weren't up to the job any longer. "They" being our public servants of the time. Tent Pegging is played in team as well as single. It is one of the most popular equestrian sports and was particularly popular in the Indian sub-continent till the post war period. Tent-pegging is now a popular equestrian sport in many countries around the world. These days the rider uses either a lance or a sword and charges in a full gallop across the arena which is specified in the rules and attempts to pick up the wooden / card board pegs stuck into the ground. This can be done individually or in a team.
Normally I didn't pay too much attention to the DW&P when on the Range, instead focusing on my beloved Missabe Road. On this day I was probably waiting for a Minorca train but shot a southbound pair of zebra SD40-2Ws at West Virginia instead. Happy I did.
The peg is 18" tall above ground and 1½" in diameter with a smaller dowel extension about ½" in diameter and 6" long plugged in the top. The extension may be temporarily removed if it impedes the striker. The peg is in the centre of the lawn.
