Patrick's been doing work experience in the factory at his Dad's work all this week. Today he's spending the day in the Härterei- the heat treatment shop which has meant wearing overalls.

Toothpaste and orange juice, pools and cell phones, first dates and unfortunate run-ins with skunks, and artists and bodybuilders: these are a few things you wouldn’t really think go together, but the art of Patrick Brown disproves at least one of those pairs. Why spend your time in the gym when you could be like Patrick Brown and simply draw yourself a Bow-Flex body? Howard Groger called to tell me that Patrick Wolfe had passed away during surgery. There seems to be a confirming post on his FB site. We are all deeply saddened. Please let me know if you have any further information.

Bob Ross Douglas told me this morning. Really awful.

Paul Jacob Boller Sad to hear this. Our generation is rapidly reaching the finish line.

David Philhour I received a call yesterday afternoon from Patrick's wife Janice saying that he had passed away Sunday, 2 days after a multiple bypass surgery in Portland. He survived the surgery but went downhill and succumbed on Sunday. Kelsey and Devon are there with Janice. So many of us who knew him will miss him dearly.

Paul Haviland Memories of him from 45 years ago: a true mensch. One of a kind. Fearless. Counted myself privileged to be a friend.

John Francis Callahan Damn! I saw him a few months ago. He was in great spirits. I was happy to see him so full of life. Now I'm sad he's gone. I appreciate this news, anyway.

Gary Tapp So sad. Several of us were lucky to have seen him with Janice not too long ago at Lesly's house in Atlanta. He seemed well at that point. Too soon!

Ward Shelley This is a real shock. When I was a freshman, he was like a superhero around school. In later years I came to know him as a deeply loving man, and a dedicated worker for justice and community. Still a superhero, I guess. I really feel his absence.

I remember Pat Wolfe with his wild red hair and his theatrical enthusiasm.

He came to visit me once when I was living in NYC and went with me to a dance job. He got up on stage and danced with me and brought down the house. He could really command the eye and connect with people. I haven't seen him for years but will always remember one of the bright stars of my college days.

Patrick Edward Armand Roy (French pronunciation: [ʁwa]; born October 5, 1965) is a former Canadian ice hockey goaltender. Nicknamed "Saint Patrick," Roy split his professional career between the Montreal Canadiens, whom he played with for 10 years, and Colorado Avalanche, whom he played with for 8 years, both of the National Hockey League. Roy won two Stanley Cups with each franchise. In 2004, Roy was selected as the greatest goaltender in NHL history by a panel of 41 writers, coupled with a simultaneous fan poll. On November 13, 2006, Roy was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He is the only player in NHL history to win the Conn Smythe Trophy (the award given to the most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs) 3 times and also in different decades. Roy is widely credited with popularising the butterfly style of goaltending, which has since become associated with goalies from Roy's native Quebec. Roy's #33 is retired by the Canadiens and Avalanche. He is currently the co-owner, general manager, and head coach of the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

First time ever exploring the backroads to the rear of Croagh Patrick here in Mayo, I was looking for the old School House but I spotted this ruins of a little cottage and couldn't resist, I had to cross a couple of high barbed wire fences and cross a stream ( about 5m wide and flowing quite fast, the water went up most of the way to the top of my wellies!!) so when I got to the location I felt like I had completed an expedition.... I think that it was worth it, actually I'm delighted with it....

René Hausman & Claire Bardainne, Dominique Bertail, Craiion, Hélène Builly, Benjamin Brard, Horacio Cassinelli, Catel,

Comoseta, Michael V Dandrieux, Alexis Dormal, Fakir, David Gilson, Kerascoët, Keuj, Koa, Stéphane Levallois, Ralph Meyer, Niark1, Nix, Ohm, Fabrice Parme, Patrick Pion, Jérôme Sachs, Short, Skwak, Stan, Amandine Urruty

The attraction of Catholicism on a purely human level is encompassed by a rich tradition of philosophy, art, ethics, literature, theology, poetry, mysticism, and charitable service. How could one not be compelled by the kindness Mother Teresa or the winsome joy of St. Francis? Who could refrain from delighting in Gerard Manley Hopkins or being awed by a powerful intellect such as that of St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Augustine?

Surpassing this, however, is the Catholic Church's bearing witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Catholic Church claims to be the church that Jesus Christ founded. That is a big claim with which a person of any intellectual honesty must wrestle. She proclaims redemption from one's sin and a promise of hope and everlasting beatitude.

The word "solace" does not capture the experience of knowing and loving Christ and being connected to Him with His saints through the church He founded and at the helm of which he placed St. Peter. This is something utterly apotheotic.

The Church is often criticized for the supposed rigidity of her doctrine and morals. However, truth be told, the only verisimilitude of her doctrine to walls is, as Chesterton observed, that they are the walls of a playground. Her moral and doctrinal teachings circumscribe the limits of a world in which authentic freedom is realized and enjoyed without frustration or compunction. All is grace, said St. Therese of Lisieux.

This is not to say that the Church is without her challenges or that to be a Catholic is not without its own frustrations. But these are of a different kind. A Catholic is frustrated when fellow Catholics and Catholic parishes approach the faith self-centeredly or as they would any other area of life. That is, when they do not come to recess, to keep with Chesterton's comparison. One's faith is not to be approached with the banal attitude one takes toward hygiene or the superficial collegiality characterized by Super Bowl parties.

Frustrating indeed are hierarchical malfeasance, chummy-feel-good travesties of the Holy Mass, the fact of Catholics' indistinct practice from others on matters of contraception or divorce, and the like. Admittedly, when fellow Catholics do not recognize the dignity that is theirs by virtue of their baptismal calling, when they do not embrace the high adventure of being Catholic, it is disconcerting, especially for a convert to Catholicism such as I am.

The challenge for the Church now, especially in the West, is to reinvigorate in its members a sense of joy in being called by God to new life and accepting the challenges of being Catholic. Baptized Catholics must learn the faith anew.

Secondarily, the Church must once again -- and as always -- proclaim the Gospel to non-Catholics and do this in a way that is sensitive to todays religious pluralism. The peculiar situation of our time is that lay Catholics must be the ones to do the preaching: in the office, the home, the clinic, and the clique. And they must do it with not only their voices, but with their lives and their hearts. Evangelization, proclaiming the Good News, must be accepted as one's Christian duty and carried out with the fervency of one who is trying to save another's life.

Christian life is a gift, and gifts are meant to be shared especially with the poor, the suffering, the lonely, the reprobate, the apathetic, and above all, anyone who is searching.
