St. Patrick's Cathedral is a decorated Catholic cathedral in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. It is the seat of the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York as well as a parish church. The cathedral occupies a city block bounded by Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, 50th Street, and 51st Street, directly across from Rockefeller Center. Designed by James Renwick Jr., it is the largest Gothic Revival Catholic cathedral in North America.
The cathedral was constructed starting in 1858 to accommodate the growing Archdiocese of New York and to replace St. Patrick's Old Cathedral. Work was halted in the early 1860s during the American Civil War; the cathedral was completed in 1878 and dedicated on May 25, 1879.
Patrick Kavanagh was an Irish poet and novelist. His best-known works include the novel Tarry Flynn, and the poems "On Raglan Road" and "The Great Hunger". He is known for his accounts of Irish life through reference to the everyday and commonplace. He also played as a goalkeeper for his local Gaelic football club
I seem to be spending many enjoyable hours playing with other family members' dogs. Patrick belongs to my brother-in-law and came for a sleepover a few weeks ago. His hobbies include running around in circles and chasing after balls. HSS!
London photographer and resident swinger Lord Patrick Lichfield casts a bemused eye at his plaster likeness in a Roostein workshop. Like most of the firm's subjects, he earned a fee for posing. After sanding and painting, each mannequin's make-up is applied by hand, a process that often takes two hours
The Sanctuary of Saint Patrick's Cathedral
Sanctuary: The Sanctuary has undergone many changes since the Cathedral opened in 1879. Beginning in 1927, the original altar, designed by the Cathedral architect, James Renwick, Jr., was removed and part of it was installed at the Fordham University Church on the Bronx campus. The sanctuary was raised and extended to a length of 76 feet. Choir stalls were set along the sides with a new oak cathedra (bishop’s chair). In 1942, the current high altar was installed beneath a gilded bronze baldachino. From the ceiling hang the galeros or red hats of the first four cardinal archbishops of New York: Cardinals McCloskey, Farley, Hayes, and Spellman. The galero is no longer presented to new cardinals.
In 2015 the galeros were removed, restored, and then re-hung in the ambulatory, just outside the sanctuary. The cathedra’s baldachino was also restored and returned to its location above the archbishop’s chair.
St. Patrick was carried off in his youth from Britain to Ireland where he lived as a slave tending pigs. There his spiritual life grew as he spent his days in prayer, growing closer to God. After six years he escaped and was able to return to his family. But in a dream one night, he had a vision of a man named Victorious who came from Ireland and gave him a bundle of letters. These letters were the voices of the Irish people, calling to Patrick to return to them. He was convinced that this was a call to establish the Church in Ireland, which at that time was not a Christian country.
But before he returned, he studied. For the next 21 years he prepared himself at monasteries in France.
In 432, he returned to Ireland as a bishop. He gained protection from the rulers first by confronting the Druids, the pagan priests. Then he travelled throughout the island, making thousands of converts.
He accomplished his mission while facing mortal dangers every day. One legend has it that a powerful king was prepared to ambush Patrick and those with him, but they miraculously became invisible, and the king only saw deer passing by, although he heard voices chanting these famous words of St. Patrick, often called the Deer Cry:
"Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ within me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right, Christ at my left,
Christ in my lying down, Christ in my sitting, Christ in my arising,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me."
He is often pictured driving the snakes out of Ireland. In truth, Ireland has no snakes, but there is no report of him actually driving them out. The snakes pictured with him represent the darkness and sin that were driven away when he brought the gospel to them.
Saint Patrick loved the Irish, and the Irish, in turn, love him. He brought to them the Light of Christ.
Our home has always had a small statue of St. Patrick, which holds a place of honor.
(sorry about the reflection in this pic. It was lit from above, and I couldn't get a perfect shot.)

Saint Patricks Well near Clonmel. It is one of the largest wells in Ireland, with a shimmering pool at its mouth and a 6th-7th century Cross mounted on a Plinth in the pool centre. It has now become as well known as a tourist attraction as a place of Pilgrimage.
When one visits this charming little town there are walks on the headlands to north and south. The track I am now on, is the northern choice heading for Killantringan lighthouse. Looking back south we see Port Patrick itself.
Patrick Pool is the relatively short street that connects Church Street with Shambles Market. On one side it is dominated by the 16th-17th century, three-storey warehouse building. It is seen here from the edge of the market place. The end of St Sampson's church can just be made out, with Swinegate in the distance.
I put Woody in his smart green collar for St Patricks day. Only to find his neck is so furry its almost impossible to see it. Happy St Patricks day all the same...
I met Patrick during a photowalk in Lyon and I wanted to ask for a portrait of him. But I didn't want a candid or a stolen shot; I wanted to know his story in order to catch his soul. He told me that he came from Czech Republic and he was wandering around Europe. He looked tired but optimistic and hopeful. We ate together in the street, trying to carry on the conversation by using a strange language: a mixture of English, French and maybe Elvish !
1 hour later, I made this portrait, hope you’ll find it strong.
