Flat caps are prominent as 'Spey No.88' passes the Anderton boatlift on the Trent & Mersey Canal with two dodgy characters on the counter. The exhaust from the Bolinder engine provides the obligatory blue haze over proceedings.
The paint job is new and thanks to Tony Lewery who came out of retirement to make the old girl look good again. He last painted the Spey in 1976.
HISTORY
Derby Friargate was Derby's second main station it was located on an extension of the Great Northern Railway's extension route. Originally named simply Derby when it opened in 1876, it adopted the Friargate title a few years later, named after the street that the line passed over at its western end.
The four-platform station was on an embankment above street level, at the northern end of the city centre, with the lines in and out passing over Friargate via a majestic wide arch bridge.
Friargate station was a hugely popular facility for connecting with major cities most notably Nottingham, as well as the neighbouring Derby racecourse stop. It was also hugely integral to the industrial area, necessitating a huge three storey warehouse and sidings complex immediately close to the station
Unfortunately, despite all its merits, Dr Beeching did not consider the pros to outweigh the cons, causing the station to see its last passenger train in 1964 while goods services stayed around for 3 years on.
The station buildings were demolished quite soon after closure although all four of the platforms still currently remain in situ and decaying, with some portions of the outer station walls as well as the foundations from a former water crane. The huge brick Friargate warehouse building - now a grade 2 listed affair - still stands presiding over the site. Development plans have been grown up to landscape the station site in a partly similar way to the former Folkestone Harbour terminus in Kent but at the time of writing, these have still not materialized as yet.

The present whereabouts of this boat are unknown to me.
Per Barry Griffith, this boat is from what some have called the Art Deco period of towboat building. It suggests that the boat is moving fast and leaning forward. Locomotives went through an Art Deco period too, as seen in two versions of the New York Central Hudson:
New York Central Hudson No. 5344 "Commodore Vanderbilt" and another Hudson with a different streamlined shroud.
Barry did some line drawings of this boat when it was named the Mary Lynn and the Gulf Inlander.
He also drew another boat having a similar Art Deco style, namely the Missouri.
There were actually two ships in this long exposure passing by the jetty at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour. The ships are less frequent this time of year so took a bit of waiting around to capture the right ones.
Volks Electric Railway, Brighton.
The Volks Electric Railway is the oldest operating electric railway in the world. It was originally opened in 1883, at 1/4 mile long, and was extended to Paston Place (now halfway) in 1884.
The railway was further extended to Black Rock to cover for the closure of the Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway in 1901, but was later cut back to it's current terminus at The Aquarium in 1930.
Brighton corporation took control of the line in 1940 and, apart from a closure during World War 2, it has operated ever since. The line was shortened again in the late 1990's, due to the construction of a storm water storage scheme.
