Kara Walker exhibit at the abandoned Domino Sugar Factory in Brooklyn. Kara Walker’s awesome and massive sugar sculpture – “A Subtlety” - AKA the Marvelous Sugar Baby. The sign on the wall of the factory notes: “A Subtlety” is an homage to the unpaid and overworked artisans who have refined our sweet tastes from the cane field to the kitchens of the new world on the occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant. Of course, the centerpiece of “A Subtlety” is the enormous female sphinx, created from white sugar. Also impressive are the basket-carrying children sculptures surrounding the sphinx. The children sculptures are made of resin coated in molasses. The sugar from the molasses has melted and pooled at the bottom and on parts of the figures.

Day 60: March 12, 2007 It seems you can't turn a corner in New York these days without running into some sort of construction activity. This particular disturbance is on 15th and 10th.

A flurry of busyness brings the work to completion, and the tired clump of college students disperse rapidly, leaving behind not only a mess but personal belongings to be (maybe) retrieved later. This is the life of a CMU student -- intense, overworked, and a tad scatterbrained. But as long as the work gets done, it's OK.

Somehow God gets me through these days of physical sickness and mental tiredness. I need to keep in mind that it's not about feeling good about myself, but rather an unending pursuit of holiness, which may look different each day, as new challenges and circumstances arise.

God likes to keep you on your toes, eh?

I don’t like to overwork a photo but smoothed this one out on purpose. Just like the way it looks.

a condition of sociey in wich there should be neither rich nor poor, neither master nor master's man, neither idle nor overworked, neither brain-sick brain workers nor heartsick hand workers, in a world in which all would be living in equality of condition and would manage their affairs unwastefully, and with the full consciousiness that harm to one would mean harm to all-the realization at last of the meaning of the word common wealth.

Labuan War Cemetery

After the fall of Singapore several thousand British and Australian Prisoners of War were sent to camps in Borneo, mainly in the Sandakan area on the eastern coast of North Borneo, where they were employed on aerodrome construction. The Australians belonged to the 8th Australian Division (“B” force numbering 1,494 and “E” force 500). In October 1943 most of the officers were separated from their men and sent to Kuching. Thereafter conditions at Sandakan greatly worsened; the men were starved, beaten and overworked by their captors. In February 1945 the Japanese, anticipating Allied landings in North Borneo, decided to move the Prisoners of War westwards to Ranau, more than 160 miles inland from Sandakan. Although many had already been transferred to other centres, more than 1,900 British and Australian servicemen remained to take part in the “Death march to Ranau”. Those who fell, sick or exhausted, on the journey were killed; the survivors who reached Ranau were made to perform superhuman work on starvation rations. Out of the 2,000 men who left Sandakan only 260 arrived at Ranau, and most of these succumbed later. Only six survived the end of the war. These six escaped from Ranau and were living with the local people when rescued.

When the Australian Army Graves Service entered Borneo they followed the route from Sandakan to Ranau, and found many unidentifiable victims of this infamous march. These and other casualties from Battlefield Burial Grounds and from scattered graves throughout Borneo were taken in the first instance to Sandakan, where a large number of prisoners of war were already buried. This flat coastal area, however, was subject to severe flooding and it proved impracticable to construct and maintain a permanent cemetery. The Sandakan graves, numbering 2,700 of which more than half were unnamed, were therefore transferred to Labuan War Cemetery in 1949, which was specially constructed to receive graves from all over Borneo.

As well as the graves from Sandakan, about 500 are from Kuching where there was another large prisoner-of-war camp. The total number of burials is 3,922. The preponderance of unidentified graves is due to the destruction of all the records of the camps by Lieutenant-Colonel Suga, the Japanese commandant, before the Australians reached Kuching, his headquarters. When apprehended, this man committed suicide rather than face questioning on his conduct of the Borneo Camps.

The Labuan Memorial was primarily intended to commemorate the officers and men of the Australian Army and Air Force who died while prisoners of war in Borneo and the Philippines from 1942 to 1945 and during the 1945 operations for the recovery of Borneo, and have no known grave. Subsequently it was found that a number of men belonging to the local forces of North Borneo, Sarawak and Brunei who were killed on war service also have no known grave, and they too are honoured here. The memorial commemorates a total of 2294 Commonwealth casualties. Men of the Royal Australian Navy who lost their lives in the south-western Pacific region, and have no grave but the sea, are commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial in England, along with many of their comrades of the Royal Navy and of other Commonwealth Naval Forces.

This memorial consists of a colonnade forming a forecourt immediately inside the wrought iron gates of the main entrance to the cemetery. On the inner faces of the pillars are bronze panels on which are engraved the names of those whom it honours and the dedicatory inscription is on the frieze facing the entrance. Some of those whose names appear on the memorial are undoubtedly buried in unidentified graves in this cemetery.

I may have overworked it a bit, but I also see places where I could have added more shadows...but I felt done and did not want to work on it anymore.

A few of my 'text pages' in recent weeks. I have a tendency to overwork flowers... but in recent months have decided that the slap dash approach is working better for me!

from a long week of work, the pile grew and grew out of control.

All set for the printers! This is the cover to my new book about a group of overworked lazy monks who pick tea =)

An old picture I finally (see the previous picture title) found time to process. Honestly it's a bit overworked for my tastes but the original photo wasn't so strong so I'm fairly happy with the results.

This site was emotionally difficult, but it is important to bear witness and educate. Genocide has repeated itself many times and history and goes on TODAY at this very moment. What are we doing about it?

1.7 - 3.5 Million people died from disease, overwork, and starvation. This number also include the 1.38 million people that were cruelly tortured and coldly executed in the genocide commited in Cambodia over the 4 year period of 1975-79.

The killing fields are the site of the mass graves men, women and children that were brought from the torture center at S-21 Tuol Sleng prison.

The TV series is set in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester during the 1950s, Anglican vicar and former Scots Guards officer Sidney Chambers, and subsequently his successor Will Davenport, work with the overworked Detective Inspector Geordie Keating to forge an unlikely partnership in solving crimes.

The oldest part of the church – the chancel – dates from the 14th century, the nave and tower are 15th century, whilst the south aisle was added in the 1870s. The font is believed to be Norman, and the 17th century pulpit probably came from the chapel of Corpus Christi College.

3 Exposure HDR. Maybe a little overworked, but I like it-so who cares?!

She has been taking a rest recently for overwork.:O

Finally finished! This went better than expected honestly. I wish the hair was a little darker, and ultimately I wish I left a little more negative space (or somehow made a greater distinction between the front curtains and the back curtains) but I was afraid of overworking the paint (if that makes sense.)

On the occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant, Creative Time presented a large scale public project by Kara Walker. A Subtlety or the Marvelous Sugar Baby is a massive, sugar-coated sphinx-like woman - "A homage to the unpaid and overworked artisans who have refined our wweet tastes from the cane fields to the kitchens of the New World."

The exhibit was from May 10 to July 6, and I was able to visit it on 06.29.14.

Transformed with the Modigliani effect.

Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, was born on July 12th 1884, in Tuscany. He was an artist and sculpter, who was influenced by a range of genres and art movements, especially primitive art. He died in Paris of tubercular meningitis— exacerbated by poverty, overworking, and an excessive use of alcohol and narcotics — at the age of 35.

I tried to be careful not to overwork this HDR and try to retain a reasonable realistic look to it with slightly enhanced shadow detail. Please give me some feedback on it!

Finally got another challenge done...mmmm not happy with this one though as it feels like it's overworked - I have control issues with watercolor :) and the perspective is off somewhat too I think. Practice, practice, rinse, repeat.

Walked into my hotel room today and found this! I must either be stressed out and/or overworked, because I found it HILARIOUS! I wonder how the guest (I'm guessing) reacted when he/she actually did the deed.

I wonder if I should even report it. I'm sure they probably know. I mean ... I have to spread the love and the funny. :)

unfortunately all photos in the series are pretty static, because i have only one white wall in my apartment, which has a window near by. it was almost 17.00 yesterday and some fading lightbeams in my bedroom for some expromtu photos. all photos taken with an old olympus digital soap, which only has p-mode for heaven's sake and took a second between focusing and actually TAKING the picture. i do miss my dslr.

I thought I'd better title it that incase you thought I had rabies.

Not sure about this one. Have I overworked it?

You'd think by now I'd know better than to try something like this in my sketch journal on multi-media paper...but no! So there are many spots where I overworked to the point that the paper balled up. I enjoyed this, but don't have what I wanted for the time involved....learn, girl, learn!!!

A few days after I ordered IN PRAISE OF THE USELESS LIFE; A MONK’S MEMOIR by Paul Quenon, O.C.S.O., someone on Flickr uploaded the cover of THE ART OF PAUSING.....which included Paul Quenon as a contributing author and photographer. I suppose I was meant to read both? Thus the small book is now in my library too.

Of late, I’ve read, or listened to, books by Thomas Merton, on the contemplative life. Both titles fit in that context.

okay here are scans of yesterdays work. Kodak 2238 shot at ISO 100 and half the roll developed in H&W Control for 60 minutes stand with 1:75 dilution. The other half for 1:15 for 20 minutes with constant agitation. I couldn't attend to it to agitate correctly and it did overwork everything. I love the painterly effects.... These are interesting and mostly useful, especially for scanning. What I DIDN'T upload is the 2 or 3 that were absolutely underexposed only a few yards from these. Lighting angles alone make all the difference between enough and too little exposure. There were a couple that had the nighttime effects the trailer is one of those and I thought I would see what interesting things happened when I adjusted it, although there was very little room for adjustment.
