Avebury is one of Britain's most important prehistoric sites, renowned for the standing stones that punctuate the village and represent the remains of one of the largest Neolithic stone circles ever constructed.
The present village of Avebury was built partially within the old stone circle, which is itself surrounded by earthworks forming a vast circular ditch, a massive undertaking. Almost half the stones of the outer circle remain in some form, mostly on the western side closer to the heart of the village. The huge roughly hewn monoliths are impressive, not least for the effort that must have been required to transport them and erect them here in a standing position.
South of the main circle and village is the Avenue which extends outwards for some distance towards West Kennett. The Avenue is lined on both sides by more standing stones, many of which are missing and generally smaller than those in the circle, but it still makes for a dramatic approach to the site.
My first encounter with Avebury was through a spooky television series in the 1970s called 'Children of the Stones' which was filmed on location here. The memory of the eerie atmosphere of the mysterious stones had stayed with me ever since.

This store has all sorts of cool and funky things to buy and as you may have noticed, I love their chalkboard and always keep an eye on it to take a picture of their new silly drawing.

Ambassador Rosen journeyed by boat to the island of Tamatan with IOM to deliver supplemental food assistance to this Northwest Outer Islands of the State of Chuuk. US Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia Doria M. Rosen, IOM Housing Implementation Advisor Christopher White, and IOM Reconstruction Operations Consultant took part in a distribution of supplemental food assistance on Tamatan Island. The IOM team delivered 52 cases of vegetables, 23 bottles of vegetable... oil, 120 50lbs. rice sacks, and 319 bars of soap to the island of 493 people. This assistance was provided by USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).
The Ambassador and IOM Representatives spoke with the community about USAID and IOM’s Typhoon Maysak Response efforts before touring the island and assessing damage to buildings and rainwater catchment systems. They were impressed to see the progress that the local community had made since Maysak, including replanting destroyed crops with the help of seedlings courtesy of a US-funded Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) program, well-maintained wells and rainwater catchment systems, and a thriving boat carving practice.

Taken during our daytrip to the Isle of Canna, which is located a couple of hours sail off the West coast of Scotland. Along with it's major neighbouring islands Muck, Eigg and Rum, the Isle of Canna and it's partially attached neighbour Sanday make up the group of Scottish islands known as the "small isles".
Canna was one of the first locations added to our holiday plan for May of this year, as the island is one of the two locations out on Scotlands islands that my ancestors came from (only a couple of generations ago). Once the boat had docked and we set foot on the island, much like we've felt on the Outer Hebrides, it definitely felt like I was back home, myself and Mireille will most certainly be back to visit again!
The Isle of Canna is the westernmost of the small isles which themselves are part of the inner hebrides. The Isles of Canna and Sanday were left by their previous owner, John Lorne Campbell to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) in 1981. A massive thanks to the residents and NTS team on the island for our enjoyable visit in May, and we look forward to seeing you all again to find out more of the family history!
The Forbidden City was the setting for The Last Emperor, the first feature film ever authorised by the government of the People's Republic of China to be filmed in the Forbidden City.
