Fort Walton Beach native named Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year while serving with Navy Medicine in Cuba
February 4 2026
Lt. Try Ketchum, MSC, a native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, was recently named the Stanley H. Freed Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year for 2025 while serving with U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (USNMRTC) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
The Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year award recognizes junior officers for exceptional clinical performance, leadership, and contributions to Navy Medicine. Ketchum joined the Navy four years ago, initially drawn by educational opportunities that later evolved into a broader commitment to service.
“I joined the Navy motivated by the financial incentive of having my doctorate degree covered in full, but stuck around to live abroad,” Ketchum said. “My proudest accomplishment in the Navy is being selected as the Stanley H. Freed Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year for 2025,” Ketchum said.

This is a closeup of an eye that has had a trabeculectomy surgery. These glaucoma surgeries are helpful to control eye pressure, but sometimes the wound can leak fluid. This eye is "seidel positive" because it is leaking fluid which you see as a green ooze under the cobolt blue light.

What IS the difference between an Optometrist and an Optician?
Optician vs. Optometrist vs. Ophthalmologist
A patient that requires contact lenses or glasses will seek the help of an optician. An optician fills lens prescriptions for contact lenses and glasses, written by the optometrist or ophthalmologist.
So an Optician is NOT a doctor, an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist is
Opticians are not responsible, nor trained, for eye examinations or treatment solutions for eye disorders. They help you pick our your frames and adjust them to fit comfortably.
Optometrists are doctors who perform annual examinations to treat any vision problems and detect signs of disease and abnormal conditions. Examinations may also include testing for glaucoma, color perception, depth, and the ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. Optometrists must be licensed, have a Doctor of Optometry degree, and pass a state board examination.
