Infection inside the eye that has caused a layered hypopion (layer of pus inside the eye)

I do photography every day at work (lucky me!), so it was easy enough to take a photo for the ShutterClock project.

I work in an optometry clinic, and one of my duties is to do retinal photography for every patient before they go in for their eye exam. That's what I was doing at 1:00 PM Pacific time.

This is the back surface of someone's right eye. (Know the red eye that people get in photographs? This is it.) The yellow spot is the optic nerve, where it connects to the eye. The darker area is the macula, the centre of the back of the eye. All the red tissue is the retina, the tissue that lines the inside of the eye.

(This is the camera I use for this kind of photography.)

On behalf of the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Army Col. Yolonda "YR" Summons, SHAPE Healthcare Facility commander, presents a check to the optometry clinic staff, including Army Maj. Louie Le, Army Spc. Derek Patterson, and Anita Gallegos, Aug. 17, 2018, on SHAPE, Belgium. LRMC awarded the clinic with $10,000 for excellent patient service. The funds will be put towards improving the optometry clinic. (U.S. Army photo by Jessica Ryan)

My baby graduated from Indiana University this past week end. With his degree in Optometry. I am so proud of him!

He will be moving back to Indiana in a few weeks and starting his Optometry career back here (home). He will begin his new job on June 9, 2008, In Cincinnati, Ohio.

His girlfriend also completed her (LPN) nursing degree this week also. She will stay at school and continue her degree to be an RN.

This week my niece, Paula Ann also completed her RN (nursing degree) and she will graduate in December.

Congratulations Drew, Steph and Paula! I am so proud of all 3 of you!

Fort Walton Beach native named Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year while serving with Navy Medicine in Cuba

February 4 2026

Lt. Try Ketchum, MSC, a native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, was recently named the Stanley H. Freed Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year for 2025 while serving with U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (USNMRTC) Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year award recognizes junior officers for exceptional clinical performance, leadership, and contributions to Navy Medicine. Ketchum joined the Navy four years ago, initially drawn by educational opportunities that later evolved into a broader commitment to service.

“I joined the Navy motivated by the financial incentive of having my doctorate degree covered in full, but stuck around to live abroad,” Ketchum said. “My proudest accomplishment in the Navy is being selected as the Stanley H. Freed Navy Junior Optometrist of the Year for 2025,” Ketchum said.

This is a photograph of a NS (nucleur sclerotic) cataract. When a narrow beam of light is shot into the eye, the central brown-yellow color of the cataractous lens can be seen.
