Taken on Saturday 3rd November, the Class 170 Turbostars don't usually extend beyond Manchester Piccadilly but luckilly I just happened to be on my way home and this was an excellent oppurtunity to take a ride on this train.

Water slowly flowing out of pond with the reflection feeling the rippling effect.
It was so calm and peaceful on this strange and upside down day! What an oppurtunity I had, to be apart of this wonderful phenomenon. Also a woman is dressed in a hat and dress from the early 1900's....Truely a wonderful day....
The USCGC Willow (WLB-202) docked @ the West Point Military Academy, NY on the Hudson River.
The 225' WLB is equipped with a single controllable pitch propeller and a bow and a stern thruster which gives the cutter maneuverability to tend buoys offshore and in restricted waters. A sophisticated Machinery Plant Control and Monitoring System (MPCMS) and an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) enable the cutter to operate safely with an optimally sized crew. Using Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) WILLOW can hold the vessel station within a ten meter circle. This technology has improved the precision and capability of the crew to service and position floating aids to navigation in winds up to thirty knots and eight foot seas.

At 2000 tons displacement and a top speed of 16 knots, you will find WILLOW very different from most other cutters. Our 40 person crew uses electronic navigation by ECDIS, machinery plant control and monitoring system (MPCMS), dynamic positioning and sophisitcated hydraulics to complete more tasks with fewer people. Our area of operations ranges from the U.S. Canadian border south to Rhode Island Sound and New York Harbor, arguably the most picturesque and challenging in the Coast Guard. Willow is based in Newport, RI which offers many recreational oppurtunities. Newport is noted for its rich maritime tradition, mansions, sailing, beautiful beaches, and abundant shopping.
I have'nt had a the oppurtunity to use the HD setting on my camera but here is a small sample of its capability.
This is the Great Falls of Paterson, it is part of the Passaic River system.
The river is flooding certain towns that sit along the river because of the Nor' Easter the area just experienced. The Passaic River is supposed to crest 12 feet above flood levels at midnight. Police and fire departments have been rescuing people from low lying neighborhoods situated along the river. It is supposed to break a record set back in 1984.
When the river recedes and street traffic gets back to normal I will go back and film this again to show you the difference in water flow and power.

Today I decided to drop a few dollars to listen to an acclaimed photographer talk about his style, and upbringings in his works. Hosted by MMOCA (Madison Museum of Contemporary Art), I lucked out and found a parking spot less then a block away. With only a few minutes to spare, I ran inside camera bag and all; as I purchased my ticket I looked around and felt a bit out of place. Most of the people here were well dressed, and I was the out of place individual with many shades of blue. No matter, as the show goes on no matter what the attire so I mingled my way through the crowd and found a seat in the lecture hall I never knew existed. Lucky me, as I sat down the room began to fill; each seat and isle was lined with people here to listen to the man speak of his art/craft.
A creative mind for as many years as he could remember, Alec spoke that he tooled around with various mediums before being completely happy with photography and now doesn't look back. His biggest influence in his work aside from a few photographers, was his art teacher in school. Always pushing the envelope teaching Alec and fellow students to explore themselves. Working a day job for nearly ten years and pursuing a career in art on the side, he eventually had an epitome and decided to make art his full time work.
Now Alec has all the time in the world to get out and enjoy it all the time, as he explained "silence becomes music." Using an 8x10 field camera does allow him to slow and and just take in the locations; with people/places/ and things all that surround him. Something about his style that really stayed with me is the fact that he explained, a good photograph is not about composition but taking the time to slow down and focus. Now focus has a dual meaning here, and I will let you read it as you wish but I know this to be very true in my style. I feel like sometimes I wait for the perfect person to walk through a frame, or just the right light to appear to capture that image that I'm going to be most happy with.
His project "From Here to There" is a great focus on the people who live off the grid. Searching out unique places, with even more unique people; Alec has a vast collection of strangers (much like I only on a much grander scale). I felt that if I were to wander into the back woods of Wisconsin I'd meet some interesting people, but I'd fear rejection or even worse getting past the intimidation factor. Strangers in the city are one thing, but the further I go outside that comfort zone the less comfortable it becomes.
Overall for my first time sitting in on an artist interview at the MMOCA, I was thoroughly entertained and it was definitely worth the price of admission. I had made up my mind about halfway through the presentation, it was my goal to ask Alec how he handles situations where people may or may not honor his request to take a photo. It also became obvious that I could turn this simple question into an oppurtunity to add to my 608 strangers project. So once he was done speaking and everyone filed out, I stood quietly in wait while every one else got a chance to ask questions and shake hands with him. I felt myself becoming nervous, eventually it was my turn and I extended a slightly shaky hand. "I am Chris Collins, Madison stranger photographer. Thank you so much for your talk today, it was really inspiring" I said with equal shake in my voice. His hand firmly gripped mine, and thanked me for the kind words. I asked my question and he informed me that you can never overcome the nervousness of stranger photography, and if people say NO; take it in stride and learn from it.
I requested a quick photo, to which he jokingly declined but then smiled and said "of course." He asked me how I would like him to pose, and I told him to "act natural" as I said this a smirk grew across his face. I had gotten my settings right as he chatted with others earlier, so I put my camera to my face and with a smile growing I clicked. I showed him quickly, and went on my way; as there were many others who wished to pick his brain. I knew this is a stranger encounter that will stick with me for years to come, and suggest if you are wanting to meet new people check out the 100 strangers group. While you may not stumble across THE ALEC SOTH, but many others who are just as strange as yourself doing the same!

The elegant Barcelona gown is my first formal gown creation for the label. Love, sensuality, spring and grand Spanish regality is where I looked for inspiration for this ensemble. Wear it on a balmy mid spring night in an enchanted garden, in a star dazzled beach as you dance with your lover, at a masked ball or at a jazz club. The oppurtunities are many.
The Barcelona gown is intended to be charmingly feminine and romantic. This gown includes a sculpted prim flower bodice with strap, a sculpted sash with flowly prims, prim front open skirt, a shirt layer and a system skirt layer. The gown can be worn in two styles as illustrated in the promotional poster.

Had a shoot with Erin at Franklin Park. We didn't have a lot of time but I think we got some great looking shots. I hope I have the oppurtunity to work with her again soon and get some more great shots

A fantastic opportunity arose recently when I located a drinking hole for a small group of crossbills! They came down twice within the space of an hour (they are very thirsty birds due to their diet of extremely dry pinecones!) and offered wonderful photographic oppurtunities. I returned to the area this morning but unfortunately they failed to return, though they were still in the area.
This will probably be my last new image for a while, as my revision begins tomorrow in preparation for my AS exams in May and June!
Today I had a rather busy day. I started at the gym, where my instructor pushed us to go a little further then we're used to, so now I'm aching in all my muscles.
After that I had my first day at work in more then 3 months. I had a burn-out so it was an exciting day today. I was quite nervous to go there, but in the end I managed quite well.
Later tonight I had the book-presentation of "Beest". The photo book featuring our very own Pixel. And as you can see he made it to the cover. I'm so proud of my little mister.
Lots of oppurtunity for me to take a picture of myself, but decided to wait untill tonight to make one in the peace and quiet of my own house.
Nice decor in the Food Republic food court of Vivo City. I'd seen it in zelciia's Food Republic Food Court photos, so of course it was worth a visit.
I loved how they made use of traditional building materials, including dark stained wood, roof tiles, lanterns, all in the traditional dark browns and bright reds.
Plus, it gave up more oppurtunities to continue our hawker food safari!

This is a short video to show you what our horses/ponies had to be in for a good cause. This was about 20 minutes before a crowd of over 400 people showed up, the afternoon time had over 800 people. Then a train started going all around, the mechanical bull started spinning, the speakers on the stage right next to us started blaring loud music, and all the horses were perfect!!!!! All the kids and adults had great rides, and no mishaps.
2 Wks ago we had the oppurtunity to do some community service for a really good cause. Lighthouse Ministries lighthousemin.org/ was doing a fundraiser for their organization. This fundraiser was held at our Lakeland Center, a very large venue that holds large crowds, rodeos, high school graduations, etc. Here they had 4-5 large bouncy houses for the kids, a mechanical bull, a train that drove everywere, several other small games scattered around, and pony rides (which is where we come in). We walked kids, and adults on the horses and ponies for 2 hours in the morning then 2 hours in the afternoon. Dr Lew Sterrett was the show that sold the tickets. sermononthemount.org/ I had never heard him speak or train a horse, but it he was wonderful to watch and listen to. Mackenzie, Bailey, and 2 other girls their age were with us also doing their community service by helping with whatever needed to be done. It was a long day, but worth it.

Oppurtunity................. Having finished at 00.15 I was waiting for the bus home and noticed 3609 now having been properly re-registered X9VTD parked up ready for the next days work. Incredibly a friends Morris Minor was parked nearby and it's steel rear bumper proved a fantastic tripod.
It was my cousin's friends wedding and i got the oppurtunity to cover the engagement ceremony. It was lovely.
Loved the idea of a glass dalas! Was simply blown-off by the idea. =)

As part of my job, I got the oppurtunity to spend 4.5 months in Abu Dhabi, UAE. On one of my side trips I came across some camels in the desert on the side of the road between Dubia and Al-Ain. They were miles from anyone. They had there front feet hobbled so they could not wander. We saw others that were free to move about. But I stopped to take a few images of this group.
I had this rare oppurtunity for a TT photoshoot with Olympus users: Zyker, Jai Orang Johor and Raime. It was fun listening to their conversation about the E-series and the four-thirds which sounded rather alien to me. I am familiar with the OMs or the D-blahx3.
We headed for the bridge after a quick thirst quenchers in Simpang Kuala and had a good time shooting the sunset. After maghrib, we had the famous Laksa there as suggested by Jai and also the sponsor for the meal that day. Thanks to Raimi for the trouble in bringing along the albums filled with brilliant images.
Thanks guys and you made me happy shooting with my OM-2N (the only one without a DSLR) and being part of the Oly family.

Sometimes, it's difficult to work out the size of handlebar stem you need on your bike. If you can afford a professional bike fitting, you can take your bike to a shop. There, a technician will put the bike on a trainer, measure you and the bike, and make adjustments as needed. If you ever walk into a shop when this process is underway, you will notice the tech has a pile of stems, all slightly different in size, to try on the bike.
The adjustable stem gives you the oppurtunity to experiment with different stem rises. It's also helpful with a cyclist who is just getting into the sport, and may be not be comfortable with a big drop in the handlebars. As they increase their fitness, they can lower , and extend their bar with this type of stem.
This stem is as fitted to my daughters bike, which is perfect for her as she is still pretty much a novice in road cycling, and opted for an upright riding position. If she gets more serious, she can easily change her riding position gradually if she chooses.
And this is how Japanese Self Defense Force (SDF) take this oppurtunity to recruit some young'uns with cute anime girls.
There is a shop opposite the El Prado museum in Madrid that has several of these figures peering over the balcony. Why? I knoweth not, but they make good photo oppurtunities.

Sophomores Parker Sheley (top bunk), David Sye (bottom bunk) and freshman Sean Flamand hang out in Parker's and David's room at Lincoln Residence Hall. UIS offers a number of popular housing opportunities on campus including traditional residence halls, townhouses for upperclassmen, and apartments. More than 1,100 students are living in campus housing this year.
I'd been skiing a little way down the piste and stopping to take photos of Vin. This is him having just set off and whilst scouting out the best position for the zoomed in shot I realised that the piste was empty and 2 cable cars were passing overhead making it an almost picture perfect oppurtunity.
Also taken this afernoon (Saturday 30th January), there was a couple of threads regarding Oldham Bus Station here, I had a perfect oppurtunity to photograph this bus, owned by Bluebird but in the true SELNEC colours.
I bent the rules a little bit by taking this shot on the actual busway itself as it was a spur-of-the-moment oppurtunity!
It's just a shame it's not one of Greater Manchester's true standards like this one! :(
