The USCGC Willow (WLB-202) docked @ the West Point Military Academy, NY on the Hudson River.
The 225' WLB is equipped with a single controllable pitch propeller and a bow and a stern thruster which gives the cutter maneuverability to tend buoys offshore and in restricted waters. A sophisticated Machinery Plant Control and Monitoring System (MPCMS) and an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) enable the cutter to operate safely with an optimally sized crew. Using Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) WILLOW can hold the vessel station within a ten meter circle. This technology has improved the precision and capability of the crew to service and position floating aids to navigation in winds up to thirty knots and eight foot seas.
Characteristics
Length: 225'
Beam: 46'
Draft: 13'
Displacement: 2,000 tons
Speed: 15 kts @ 75
Endurance: 21 days unreplenished
Range: 6000 miles at 12 kts
Crew: 8 officers, 34 enlisted
Buoy Deck Area: 2,875 Square Feet
Icebreaking: 14" plate ice at 3Kts, 3ft backing and ramming
Oil Spill Recovery: 400 Gallons per minute
At 2000 tons displacement and a top speed of 16 knots, you will find WILLOW very different from most other cutters. Our 40 person crew uses electronic navigation by ECDIS, machinery plant control and monitoring system (MPCMS), dynamic positioning and sophisitcated hydraulics to complete more tasks with fewer people. Our area of operations ranges from the U.S. Canadian border south to Rhode Island Sound and New York Harbor, arguably the most picturesque and challenging in the Coast Guard. Willow is based in Newport, RI which offers many recreational oppurtunities. Newport is noted for its rich maritime tradition, mansions, sailing, beautiful beaches, and abundant shopping.
I love these stylish little cars, perhaps they could be regarded as the 5s true successor, in spirit and purpose. If Im correct, this one is pre 2004 due to the lack of rubbing strips on the side. Im not overly sure on the spec, anyone care to enlighten me? Quite common considering they were never sold here, a case of massive missed oppurtunity by Renault.
I'd been skiing a little way down the piste and stopping to take photos of Vin. This is him having just set off and whilst scouting out the best position for the zoomed in shot I realised that the piste was empty and 2 cable cars were passing overhead making it an almost picture perfect oppurtunity.
taken in paris ,i just could'nt miss this oppurtunity , its just a shame that someone who resembled liz hurley was'nt walking past instead of the couple i actually photographed
The Front Of An Old Gibson Air-Sweep Air Conditioner. to be honest, im not a huge fan, but if i ever had the oppurtunity to own one, i would go for it. they do have a following, and i have heard about them. theyre suppose to be very good units, but i have never seen one in person. so my assumption is they are very rare today.
Nice decor in the Food Republic food court of Vivo City. I'd seen it in zelciia's Food Republic Food Court photos, so of course it was worth a visit.
I loved how they made use of traditional building materials, including dark stained wood, roof tiles, lanterns, all in the traditional dark browns and bright reds.

This is a short video to show you what our horses/ponies had to be in for a good cause. This was about 20 minutes before a crowd of over 400 people showed up, the afternoon time had over 800 people. Then a train started going all around, the mechanical bull started spinning, the speakers on the stage right next to us started blaring loud music, and all the horses were perfect!!!!! All the kids and adults had great rides, and no mishaps.
2 Wks ago we had the oppurtunity to do some community service for a really good cause. Lighthouse Ministries lighthousemin.org/ was doing a fundraiser for their organization. This fundraiser was held at our Lakeland Center, a very large venue that holds large crowds, rodeos, high school graduations, etc. Here they had 4-5 large bouncy houses for the kids, a mechanical bull, a train that drove everywere, several other small games scattered around, and pony rides (which is where we come in). We walked kids, and adults on the horses and ponies for 2 hours in the morning then 2 hours in the afternoon. Dr Lew Sterrett was the show that sold the tickets. sermononthemount.org/ I had never heard him speak or train a horse, but it he was wonderful to watch and listen to. Mackenzie, Bailey, and 2 other girls their age were with us also doing their community service by helping with whatever needed to be done. It was a long day, but worth it.
And this is how Japanese Self Defense Force (SDF) take this oppurtunity to recruit some young'uns with cute anime girls.

A fantastic opportunity arose recently when I located a drinking hole for a small group of crossbills! They came down twice within the space of an hour (they are very thirsty birds due to their diet of extremely dry pinecones!) and offered wonderful photographic oppurtunities. I returned to the area this morning but unfortunately they failed to return, though they were still in the area.
This will probably be my last new image for a while, as my revision begins tomorrow in preparation for my AS exams in May and June!
Sometimes, it's difficult to work out the size of handlebar stem you need on your bike. If you can afford a professional bike fitting, you can take your bike to a shop. There, a technician will put the bike on a trainer, measure you and the bike, and make adjustments as needed. If you ever walk into a shop when this process is underway, you will notice the tech has a pile of stems, all slightly different in size, to try on the bike.
The adjustable stem gives you the oppurtunity to experiment with different stem rises. It's also helpful with a cyclist who is just getting into the sport, and may be not be comfortable with a big drop in the handlebars. As they increase their fitness, they can lower , and extend their bar with this type of stem.
This stem is as fitted to my daughters bike, which is perfect for her as she is still pretty much a novice in road cycling, and opted for an upright riding position. If she gets more serious, she can easily change her riding position gradually if she chooses.
I was given oppurtunity to witness a live painting session done by Persue, Rime, and Dr. Sex. This was done in San Diego. I managed to get a few shots of the action but I did my best to stay out of their way and not interrupt the guy filming (aka Push) from taking his footage. It was fun to watch.
One of Robin Dunne's anecdotes makes Amanda Tapping cringe as they answer fans' questions.
Due to the long queues for some of the guests, the event organizers decided to bring Amanda on early, half way through Robin's appearance, so that more people got an oppurtunity to see her - and I have to offer thanks to them for doing so, otherwise I would have missed out.

Also taken this afernoon (Saturday 30th January), there was a couple of threads regarding Oldham Bus Station here, I had a perfect oppurtunity to photograph this bus, owned by Bluebird but in the true SELNEC colours.
I bent the rules a little bit by taking this shot on the actual busway itself as it was a spur-of-the-moment oppurtunity!
It's just a shame it's not one of Greater Manchester's true standards like this one! :(
See another shot I took of this very bus way back in September 2008 here!

As part of my job, I got the oppurtunity to spend 4.5 months in Abu Dhabi, UAE. On one of my side trips I came across some camels in the desert on the side of the road between Dubia and Al-Ain. They were miles from anyone. They had there front feet hobbled so they could not wander. We saw others that were free to move about. But I stopped to take a few images of this group.
Had the oppurtunity to work with the guys in Emmure again this year, one of my favorite portraits of Frankie I have ever taken!

It was my cousin's friends wedding and i got the oppurtunity to cover the engagement ceremony. It was lovely.
Loved the idea of a glass dalas! Was simply blown-off by the idea. =)
Could not resist but post this.
I swam pretty much my whole life. I started lessons when I was about 5, and then I started summer swimming when I was 8, then by 10 I was swimming year round and actually went to States with the YMCA with my relay.
I was a sprint freestyler.
By my senior year in high school, I was sick of swimming. My heart wasn't in it anymore.
I decided i would try swimming in college since my school is division 3 and there wasn't much expected of you. I ended up trying it for a few months then quitting, for many reasons.
I still excercise all the time- I usually head to the gym everday. If i don't go to the gym, I take walks. I love excercise, and I'm thankful for that. My mom is really the one to thank, because she didn't let me and my sisters be lazy and eat everything we wanted. She always encouraged us to excercise, be involved, and didn't buy those horrible snacks. Obviously during those days I begged her to get junk food, but looking back on it, I'm glad that she didn't do it ALL THE TIME. Just special occasions.
Looking back on my childhood, thanks to swimming and my mom, I could eat whatever I wanted (when oppurtunity knocked) and I did not once worry about my weight. Never crossed my mind "oh i ate too much shit today I shouldn't eat this ice cream." Hell no- i ate that ice cream!
Now that I'm a tad bit older, I am starting to be more concious of what I'm eating. But wow do I love my salty snacks!
Anyways, this is my body, and despite some complaints about my ass and thighs, I am proud of it

Shot with Kat at the House of Nightmares Group shoot on 11/29/08. It was a blast doing this set in a dark, cold, and dirty basement. If anyone ever has the oppurtunity to work with Kat.... Do NOT pass up the oppurtunity!
Shot with a Nikon D300, 17 - 200 MM VR lens and a SB800 flash. I used 2 Britek 1500 watt strobes (1 behind an umbrella diffuser and the other as a main with umbrella) to balance out some light in this dark warehouse basement.

The Olumpic torch was coming to Plymouth and we couldn't miss it.
We took a walk down to Stonehouse bridge so we could get a good view, we had thought about going on to the Hoe but knew it would be busy.
We go to the bridge in plenty of time so we could get a good spot. There were people dressed in Union jack dresses, shirts, there was even one man dressed as a knight.
First we were treated to a procession of trucks playing music, there was a Coca Cola truck, samsung and Lloyds, each truck had people waving and dancing, then a bus went past with the remaining runners. The atmosphere was fantastic as they went through, people were then saying that the torch was on the bus as they were running late so people began to leave.
We decided to hang on just to make sure and I'm glad we did.
I'm not sure who this torch bearer is but he looked so happy and proud to be able to carry the torch it was so worthwhile taking the time to go and see him.
We then decided to take a walk up on the hoe to see if we could get a view of the cauldron once lit but we had no idea just how full the hoe would be.
When we got up there the security gaurds told us to go along the seafront as the promanade was closed.
We could not believe the site that we were faced with when we got around to the Plymouth Dome. I have never seen the hoe so busy, and never known the promanade to be closed off.
I'm glad that we saw the torch as it was a once in a lifetime oppurtunity.
Sorry the picture is a little out of focus.

A scan from the C&NW System Timetable No 2. This was the second system wide timetable the railroad issued; the first was in 1972.
Although there was only a year left of through service, there was still a bit of traffic moving through Wausau at this time and there were still several good railroad customers like 3M, Crestline, American Can and Wausau Steel.
The CNW and MILW had joint trackage on the northwest side of town on which they would rotate switching duties every other day. American Can (formerly Marathon Corp until 1957, then James River in 1982 and now Graphic Packaging) was the main switch on this small industrial branch. A lumber supply company just north also had a siding and to the north of that there was still a spur reaching to Marathon Electric although judging from 1974 aerial maps, Marathon Electric was doing very little if any business with the railroad at this time.
The two railroads had 3 interchange tracks - on the east side of the Wisconsin River, at the CNW main yard and at the diamond in Rothschild where the CNW's branch line crossed the Milwaukee main.
The stretch of track in Wausau did not feature signals on either railroad. The diamond on the east end of the CNW yard was controlled simply by stop signs; a train would pull up, stop and give two short blasts of the horn before proceeding. Since the Milwaukee's main in Rothschild had the right of way over the CNW's spur track, the diamond there was protected by swing gates that by default were closed against the CNW, requiring their trains to stop and open the gate before proceeding.
The crossing with the SOO at Marshfield was a mechanical interlocking controlled by the SOO. They had a double main at this time and were always hesitant to allow CNW trains through since they were usually extremely long and prone to issues caused by the bad track. In the early days, the CNW had a lighted approach signal, but by this time electricity had long been disconnected and their signal was simply painted yellow.
According to the 1974 Operations Manual, both Marshfield and Eland were crew change points for road train 471/472. Only eastbound 472 was scheduled to stop in Wausau. Marathon, Edgar and Stratford offered only a few switching oppurtunities by this time and those industries that were still being served were handled by locals out of Wausau.
Had a shoot with Erin at Franklin Park. We didn't have a lot of time but I think we got some great looking shots. I hope I have the oppurtunity to work with her again soon and get some more great shots

Mifflin Street Block Party, aka get drunk be merry and be happy! Now while I only went to induldge the journalist inside of me, there were no beverages consumed by me. Mifflin is essentially the big party the last week before finals for the studens and fellow partyiers: Not being a UW student I never really saw what the big stink was about. But I knew that it would be a great oppurtunity for some interesting shots. This paticular shot (one of quite litterly a thousand that I took today), was quite interestingly presented to me. While walking around I was looking for an intact beer can to set up and shoot a low angle close-up with people in the background. As I couldnt find an useable can, when I saw this one sitting so perfectly in the window just waitng for me to take its picture.
I cant say if it had anything left in it or not, but I assum that id had some sort of liquid contents on the basis it stayed put the entire time I decided to shoot it. I tried lots of angles with my 35mm lens but eventually had to go wider. This is an instance I wish I had an FX sensor, then the 35mm would actually done the trick. Oh well maybe next time, the reflections and the girl leaned against the side of the building really put me over the edge to choose this shot over the many others I took.
Reflection from an empty cafe window somehow reminds me of memorizing. Rationally thinking, separate realms are blurred into one. And one always needs something to reflect against to be able to access to the basic feelings that usually go unnoticed.
Constructing memory this way one could remember the sun and warmth of election day, the windy road, industrial buildings, the eagerness of the dog, the all existing commercial space filled with oppurtunities to consume.
Things and feelings and colors, the time of the day and year and relationship. People like pictures, because it is yesterday. There's some continuity to this moment, but mostly the day has disappeared.

I found this barn in Van Buren County, Iowa the other day down a road I haven't marked as being down yet. Going to the Walmart inKunming was really exciting, it was one of our first oppurtunities to genuinely experience contemporary Chinese culture, as well to interact with, let alone be around local people.
Unlike the Walmart by my house in San Jose, the Walmart in Kunming was almost entirely stocked with local and domestic goods, making Walmart even friendlier than it was before. In Many ways, Walmart can be seen as being more Chinese than American.

It's a great learning experience to shoot the same butterfly in different ways as it was very relaxed when I saw it. One should never miss such oppurtunity and also try different ways to capture the same instead of capturing one shot. I gave prime importance to learning to get sharp focus on its eyes, but its very difficult to do that.
Also I got great oppurtunity to learn to create photo collage in GIMP software which I thought is difficult to achieve in GIMP. Learning to use GIMP requires lots of patience but the video tutorials helps you to make things possible quickly. This video helped me to create the collage: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6V1ule9T7Zo .
I layed out collage canvas in 8000x6000px resolution. The "Golden" gradient with rectangular vortex you see on the background took around 20 minutes to generate. I have AMD FX 6300 6-crore processor with 8 GB RAM. I wonder whether Photoshop will be much faster or not?
Anyways thanks to the single butterfly that gave me so much oppurtunity to learn. I would call this "Butterfly effect" of learning. :D ;)
BTW will be uploading the individual photos eventually.

I brought the Opteka 500mm up to Twin Peaks. This was an unplanned visit so I didn't have the normal arsenal of cold weather gear in the car. And it was cold. Biting cold. Finger numbing cold. Only tourists-dare-to-go cold. I couldn't take a still enough shot so I took the oppurtunity to make something "impressionistic". I'll be back and this will be sharp.

One of the great casualties of the redevelopment of Tottenham Court Road station as part of the huge Crossrail project was the Astoria, on the corner of Charing Cross Road and Sutton Row, which opened in 1927 as a cinema, on the site of a Crosse & Blackwell warehouse. It was designed by Edward A. Stone, who also designed the Brixton Academy, and the Rainbow in Finsbury Park. In 1977 it became a theatre, and, after closing for a year in 1984, reopened as a live music venue and a nightclub in 1985. I used to visit a lot in the 1980s, when its bouncers had a fearsome reputation for violence, and, on one particularly memorable occasion, I saw Nirvana when they were just third on the bill to Tad and Mudhoney. The Astoria closed in January 2009 after it was the subject of a compulsory purchase order, and was demolished later that year. I took this photo of the Crossrail hoarding outside the former site of the Astoria on September 3, 2012.
See here for an extraordinary time-lapse film of the Astoria being dismantled, along with all the other buildings beside it, in the block that used to run all the way to Oxford Street: www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-05/18/demolition-astoria
