Most students have busy schedules. With online learning, students can complete assignments when they have free time.
Organized session at Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education, moderated by Martha Cleveland-Innes, Athabasca University.
Temps in the high 60's had this Northern Cardinal singing in a tree top. Lots of cardinals at Sutton Wilderness near my home. This guy won't be singing in the morning. It will be 17 degrees at 8 o'clock and that will be the high for the day, down to 12 degrees by nightfall. Hopefully this is winter's last big hurrah in Oklahoma.

Requires a great deal of pre-course set up creating videos and assessments. Course requires much less ongoing instructor intervention once it begins.
Mary-Jane Mahoney (Faculty of Health Sciences) & Tim discuss the student survey data from the BACHS project last year.
Overview: Large unit of study, compulsary for students across a range of health science subjects, with heavy scheduling difficulties (suitable venues for large cohorts; scheduling for a suitable time for students in a range of courses, etc) and increased pressure on face-to-face hours.
Tested intervention: Move face-to-face contact to small-group sessions-- tutorials rather than lectures. Instead, trial moving some lecture materials online (3 lectures of about 13). Survey students as to how they felt their understanding / learning went with each method:
* survey online for the online lectures
* survey on paper for the face-to-face, traditional lectures.
I should also mention: This was at Gosia's farewell lunch. Gosia's off to the Big City to join Kate. Have fun Gosia!

Vanderbilt made its first institution-wide foray into online learning by joining the digital learning consortium Coursera in September 2012. The free, noncredit courses are available to a worldwide audience and taught by leading Vanderbilt faculty members. One of the goals of faculty participating in Coursera is to bring what they learn from teaching students across the globe using a digital platform back into their classrooms at Vanderbilt. The university’s first two courses launched March 4, and three more will follow this spring and summer. More than 185,000 people have signed up for the Vanderbilt courses to date.
