WONDERFUL FACTS - Are Octopus the smartest animal ...
In particular, the Coleoidea subclass (cuttlefish, squid, and octopuses) is thought to be the most intelligent invertebrates and an important example of advanced cognitive evolution in animals, though nautilus intelligence is also a subject of growing interest among zoologists. 🐬
Happy birding 🐾
I was finally able to visit my grandkids for the first time in seven months since Corona virus started. This was shot on a school day as they are continuing online learning. Nothing has any sense of normality anymore. It was a wonderful visit but also very bittersweet as I have no idea when I can go back. They live in the U.S. and I live in Canada so I am now in a 14 day mandatory quarantine upon my return to Canada.
A collage of some of my favourite pictures of Torquay. I've been doing some online learning from Blake Rudis and his f64 Academy and this is part of his course on smart objects in Photoshop. It is a template you can drag and drop images into and I liked the result. Here's hoping you do too.
HBM! I could only walk to the lake and back because it took so much energy to walk in the deep snow. Some kids got a snow day but others on online learning were told to carry on.
For Monday, a creature as ugly as Monday mornings. :P Though beautiful in its own way. I don’t know what it is. I thought it might be a pine sawfly, but it was munching on a leaf, not a pine. While trying to identify it, I came across the Integrated Educational Platform (a Polish government-run online learning portal), where animals are eagerly referred to as “pests.” I must admit, it’s a bit disheartening to realize that we teach children to look at the world from the perspective of profits for, say, the State Forests company, rather than from the perspective of the environment. Hmmm…
On the day I visited the Richmond Maritime Festival at Steveston, I saw the young girl (on the right) taking her kayaking lesson. Her tutor is on the left.
The scene is not visually spectacular but I like it. It makes me reflecting on mentoring type of learning process.
I still think the old-fashioned mentoring kind of learning is most effective (not cost effective though). It is better than classroom (one to many) or online learning (many to many). Of course it is important that you have a good mentor!
I have met with a few of the Flickr contacts who have been so kind in sharing experience and knowledge with me. They are like my mentors. I am so grateful to them. If I have made any improvement in the first year after joining Flickr, I am indebted to them.
Thanks so much for your comments!

VIRTUAL VISIONS OF GLOBAL JUSTICE
Art Show Gala to Celebrate the International Criminal Court in New Justice Center in Second Life with USC
Hosted by USC Network Culture Project at the Annenberg School for Communication
A dozen prominent artists presenting new works on themes of justice
Unique interactive collaboration in virtual world connects real world issues
(March 17, 2008) The USC Network Culture Project at the Annenberg School for
Communication harnesses creative potential in digital media with a groundbreaking new art exhibition opening March 19th at 5PM PST in Second Life. The Visions of Global Justice gala will share new works on themes of justice with international leaders to preview the new Justice Center in celebration of the International Criminal Court.
On Wednesday March 19th the new Justice Commons and International Island sims in Second Life will feature a dozen talented artists from the virtual world presenting their visions of justice. USC Network Culture hosts this gala opening with support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation in partnership with Global Kids. Teens from Global Kids will also present original art at the Justice Commons throughout the month of March.
This arts exhibition is a transmedia celebration of the International Criminal Court. Additionally, the International Criminal Court will be the topic of simulcasts on March 20th with Global Kids in the virtual worlds of Second Life, There, and Whyville. On the same day, the International Justice Center will host a live video screening in which former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan will receive the MacArthur Award for International Justice from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, an independent grantmaking institution committed to building a more just, sustainable, and peaceful world. Mr. Annan will also deliver a major address on international justice. The March 20th simulcast will be the first time an international event will streamed across all three of these virtual worlds.
The International Justice Center builds on Global Kids’ groundbreaking work by establishing an online hub supporting the ICC and the global justice concerns it addresses; this innovative online learning center will provide resources for people to learn about the ICC, connect with ICC officials and advocates, and take action in support of human rights and international justice.

About USC Network Culture Project at the Annenberg School for Communication
USC Network Culture Project is exploring how technology can be used to build bridges between cultures, promoting genuine dialogue with the residents of virtual worlds about what really matters, taking the conversation beyond branding, marketing and profits. The Network Culture Project is interested in how network culture and virtual online communities can have a real and significant impact on a wide range of activities including civic engagement, ethics, education and every day practices.
About Global Kids
In 2006, Global Kids became the first non-profit to develop a dedicated space for programming in the virtual world of Teen Second Life (TSL). Global Kids brings students from its New York based programs into the organization’s headquarters to conduct youth leadership programming and stream audio and video of major international events. This innovative program is conducted in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation, UNICEF, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Youth Venture, and the International Criminal Court, among others. More information on this program can be found on the Global Kids’ website at www.GlobalKids.org.
About the International Criminal Court
The International Criminal Court is the world’s first international human rights tribunal,
designed to investigate and try those accused of committing some of the worst violations of human rights, including genocide, mass rape and war crimes. The ICC, headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands since 1998, is investigating and trying crimes committed in Sudan, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic. The International Justice Center (IJC) is a project of Global Kids and is supported by a generous grant from the Digital Media and Learning initiative of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The IJC is an independent initiative and does not purport to represent or imply any formal association with the International Criminal Court. Dave: Bruno, where's Daniel? He's supposed to be doing on-line school right now.
Bruno: Oh, he took a break, so I'm substituting for him.
Dave: Really?
Bruno: Yes, really. I've got the computer, headset, and porg desk companion. I'm doing a fabulous job.
Dave: Fabulous job of what?
Bruno: Substitute studenting. It's much like regular student but with none of the learning. And we all know how good I am at not learning things.
Dave: We are aware.
Bruno: Plus I get to keep telling this guy Steve that he's the imposter. It's really fun.
Dave: Does Steve appreciate that?
Bruno: Not as much as I do. It's virtual recess so we're playing among us. I figured that I'm the best at being among people so I could substitute for Daniel while he went to the bathroom.
Dave: You are very good at being among people. But, if you're pretending to be Daniel aren't you the imposter?
Bruno: Indeed, which is why my plan is perfectly ironic. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to calling Steve an imposter.

Daniel has transitioned into doing grade 5 virtually because of COVID. He's being great about doing the online learning. It was Daniel's idea to get a photo of Bruno wearing his headphones at the computer. I thought it would an appropriate way to add the on-line school story to Bruno's photo project. Good thing the big guy is so accommodating and willing to work for cheerios.

With the current Covid-19 restrictions in place I have been working from home providing online learning to my class of students. This shot was taken after the end of what would be our normally scheduled school day, so I'll consider this after work.
In 1998 I went to the Online Learning conference in Los Angeles. Every attendee got one of these laser points. The keynote speaker gets up and is immediately hit with a thousand points of light. He must have anticipated it because he was wearing protective goggles.
After 25 years the logo is almost worn off, but it still works. This was Taffy's favorite toy and she chased this light many miles.
Picture is 3 inches wide.
This shot taken almost six years go following its repaint into Olympia livery. It returned to service at the time repainted but with its old branding still evident for a while. By the time it was withdrawn it was in need of an external repaint but as plans for its withdrawal were on the cards a year ago any proposal to outshop it in the new green local livery would have been dismissed. Whilst mechanically sound (it passed its MOT with flying colours) and in good shape inside. i would have been too costly to upgrade to meet forthcoming LEZ requirements in Aberdeen.

Back in January, online learning was the thing.... with two of my grandkids we took a day offline for outdoor ed. It was so much fun, feeding the birds at our local provincial park, looking for tracks in the snow and a Bald Eagle hunt (we found 4). Now back at school and a recent lockdown, we haven't had any outings. Sigh...
The young woman here is beautiful, and I love the reflection of the keyboard in her sunglasses ... but I gotta tell ya: the combination of grass and green-glow on the back of her laptop is out of this world. I have to admit that I used some color saturation to pump up the colors a little ... but not much. This photograph made itself: I just happened to be in the right place, at the right time, to point my camera in the right direction and push the shutter-button...

Little Penny couldn't wait to get away from the computer to get outside for recess. Online learning is not as easy or fun as really being in school!
She is happy that she could go outside for recess to catch some snowflakes on her tongue and that she has her own playground to enjoy since all of the public ones are closed.
Good luck to all of you remote teachers, parents, and students. This is hard!!

Help me explore the concept of online quid pro quo. You get great visual content and I get extra credit in my emerging media class. Or at least that's the cunning plan...
Also, if you have an idea for a custom graphic you need for your own blog or website, please share with me at mkhmktg@yahoo.com. I'll give it my best shot to create something for you.
No, Hanamaru hasn't got the coronavirus, she's just staying home per government orders to help slow its spread. In-person classes have been canceled, but she's connected with a laptop she borrowed for online learning. Hanamaru also has plenty of books to read, one of her favorite pastimes.
While her friends are only an IM away, Hanamaru misses being together with them. She's keeping her spirits up knowing that she's doing the right thing for her grandparents (with whom she lives) and her community.
Pictured at Wick during our 'after online learning lock down excersise' is 158712 which had just arrived with the nicely on time 14:56 Scotrail service from Inverness. The trains are currently running to time almost every day, probably because they haven't got the inconvenience of having to carry any passengers!!!!

My wife Carole occasionally provides childcare for our two granddaughters at our home when our daughter is required to go work at the office. I took a candid shot of our granddaughter Margo at lunchtime. Margo is in Grade 1 and doing the online learning gig which, in my opinion, is not the best method of learning for kids her age. She easily gets distracted, finds it boring sitting in front of a computer all day, and she really misses her classmates.
I've been in Cornwall for 2 weeks and yesterday I went to Perranporth Beach. I took this shot from above the beach in the sand dunes with my Canon EOS 350D and these settings: 1/125ƒ/16ISO 100 at 18 mm.

Naples, FL - Dec 2013
The urge to shoot right now is so real. I'm sure you've all heard of the situation in Venezuela right now but it has not gotten better obviously. School's been cancelled for about a month now so we've moved to an "online learning" system until further notice and it's also impossible to get around the city meaning it's impossible to find new locations and shoot with models :( oijeiojfoierjfe can't wait to be back in FL in a few months!
EDIT 2: Happy to say that this set was featured on collectivesynesthesia.net - they feature amazing photographers of all sorts (fashion, nature, conceptual, etc) check them out!
I‘m not the only photographer who notices other people carrying cameras or taking photographs. I was surveying the crowd at last weekend’s Lucky Flea Market, behind the Village Gate, when Jerome walked up and asked me about the camera I was carrying, and we started talking about photography. He’s an avid photographer and a sixth-grade teacher at School 29 in Rochester.
When he was 10, Jerome’s mother bought him a Kodak camera. “That kind of led the way, and I’ve just been shooting ever since,” he said.
He mostly shoots landscapes, but he also photographs high-school seniors and athletic events.
Originally from Springfield, Massachusetts, Jerome’s been in Rochester since 1987. He came here straight out of high school and attended college at the University of Rochester, where he got a degree in elementary education. He’s been teaching at Adlai E. Stevenson School 29 for 23 years. “I’ve been there ever since,” he said.
Online learning (during the pandemic) was a big challenge. “We made it through, but it was stressful,” he said. “Hopefully next year things will be back to normal.”
His wife is also a teacher, and they have two boys. Besides photography, Jerome likes to go on hikes in the Adirondacks and various local parks, with his family.
This picture is #39 in my 100 Strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com/.
Thanks, Jerome!
I created these birds after watching a wonderful lesson on Skillshare, an online learning site. The name of the instructor is Herma Starreveld..

Key Principles and Guidelines for parents and expectations from students to obey online learning at the best schools in Ghaziabad
(Version 3) My submission for the the 2013 Saylor Foundation Digital Education Conference. www.saylor.org/posters-2/
My poster/meme is targeted at exposing the mixed bag of what people mean by the term Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC. As with many trending topics, many people and institutions have jumped on the MOOC bandwagon, but have little shared understanding of what they actually are, or what they are useful for. By adding prompts around the potential meaning of each letter, I wanted to represent visually the fuzziness of the concept, and the need to develop a better taxonomy of what it means to learn online.
Although I have represented this concept visually myself, I would not have come up with the idea without attending Educon in Philadelphia in January 2013. I borrowed the tagline from Jon Becker, Assistant Professor at VCU.

Still not quite sure how to attempt scenes like this but probably will stick with this kind of sketching for a while longer.
I decided to repeat the Natural History Illustration course:

Kenya, 2020: Rafael, 11, studies his Class 6 textbooks and revises the exercises, at home in Mathare informal settlement in Nairobi. He cannot participate in online learning, as his family has no mobile phone. His mother, Grace, says, "This is a pandemic and the measures are necessary, but a disaster for the kids." Grace cleans clothes and dishes for $2/day, and worries that the school fees already paid for the year may not be refundable.

Replace Social with Affective. Social exists in the space between teaching and emotional. My suggestion after attending a #congressh session on blended learning and reading the supporting articles.
