Part of my COVID-19 album. While most training has gone online, learning how to sail a windsurfer requires "hands on" experience. The client (on the left) and the instructor (on the right) are both wearing masks while practicing physical distancing. Training by Windsure at the Jericho Sailing Center in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Isaac has returned back from Uni where all face to face teaching and research has been suspended until further notice. In fact, most of the buildings have been closed today too. Everything has moved online. It's how I'm working for the foreseeable future too.

Participants of UN Women’s Second Chance Education programme are learning in a classroom setting at a women’s empowerment hub in Gaya, a district in the state of Bihar, India. The programme has set up 12 “women’s empowerment hubs” in 12 districts - community centres where women can come to learn in classrooms, gain vocational training, and in some areas, access online learning programmes. In this photo, the women learners are wearing masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

UN Women’s Second Chance Education programme in India is helping women re-enter formal education, get vocational and skills training, and secure employment or entrepreneurial opportunities. The programme is running in four Indian states – Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Odisha – covering 12 districts and 200 villages which have some of the highest rates of poverty and lowest indicators for gender equality. It’s funded by BHP Foundation and implemented by Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) as the lead partner with eight other non-governmental organizations .

album description:

In 2018, UN Women initiated the development of a Second Chance Education and Vocational Learning (SCE) programme that would provide marginalized women who have lost out on education with pathways to employment through a tailored learn-to-earn approach. Despite the increasing investments in access to quality education and specifically girls’ education, half a billion women are still illiterate worldwide.

Main research findings: MOOCs are interdisciplinary, there is a lot of DATA, student schedules take priority, students take notes.

Technology has our beliefs, world-views and assumptions embedded into the design. If the technology is designed by a homogenous group in Silicon Valley then we can't reach the needs of a diverse group of learners. We need diversity in thinking.

To me a wrapping cloth is not functional, it is symbolic of my desire to wrap up and protect my children.

As for the notes themselves, I'm working on using this new retinal display iPad for visual notes. The super high resolution takes some getting used to. For example, see the tiny text? No, me either but that's the size that I'm used to drawing/writing. I have more control at that size. The larger, thicker stroke feels somehow clumsy, awkward not as nice.

Oh well, as always, need more practice.
