Great place to visit, art crafts, tearoom etc though they're not in the building in the picture - next door in a different one you'll be glad to hear!

The Old Mill was built in 1930 and was operated by student help and a mill operator. The wheel is considered one of the largest in the world. The water source for the mill originates from a reservoir about a mile away and several hundred feet higher. Water is piped to the mill and pressure from the loss of elevation allows it to reach the top of the column above the wheel. For more information: www.berry.edu/oldmill/

Another trip to the old mill.

Meriwether County near Woodbury, Georgia

The present building was built in 1867. The mill is powered by turbine. Today the mill still grinds corn.

Definitely a shot from the archive, this was originally a color slide taken when I was a child using a very simple camera. It may have been a Brownie. This and a couple of other slides were found amongst my mom's belongings and I had them scanned to a CD. Originally in color, I feel this shot works better processed into sepia. At the time I felt the Mill was a very precarious structure but it seems it still stands today. This was not an easy place to visit and required some off roading in a rented Jeep. My father died when I was young and the fishing trip we took to Colorado one summer was the only major father-son event we got to enjoy together. A treasured memory forever.

According to Wikipedia:

The Crystal Mill, or the Old Mill in Crystal, Colorado in the United States, was actually not a mill in the sense of being a factory, but was instead a power generating station.

It did not generate electrical power, but rather used a water turbine to drive an air compressor. The compressed air was then used to power other machinery or tools.

Today it stands as a Colorado icon, and is reputed to be the most photographed site in the state.

Thanks as always for your visits, faves and more! Hope you all have a great Thursday. BTW, today is the Princess's first day at her new preschool so there is excitement in the air :-)

Bush Mill, also known as Bond Roller Mill, is a historic grist mill located near Nickelsville, Scott County, Virginia. It was built in 1896, and is a three-story, log and timber frame building on a limestone foundation. It has a front gable roof sheathed in metal. It measures 39 feet, 9 inches by 30 feet, 4 inches. The mill has a 24-foot (diameter) and 4 feet wide overshot steel waterwheel added in the 1920s is intact and remains functional. (Wikipedia).

...sloshing back roads we came upon this scene in Meta, Missouri during a lull ... this wasn't my primary focus; a bank down the street caused me to stop; after shooting it i walked back up the street and watched this scene unfolding; plopped down the old tripod, bracketed and ripped off two sets using my Canon 5D Mark II shooting in RAW...lucked out!!

On Ontario's Rocky Saugeen River near Durham, Ontario a 19th-century grist mill sat idle for decades, uninhabited but never unappreciated. Then in 2001 the grandson of the owner decided it was time to tackle a restoration he had dreamed of for years. An architectural firm was brought in and, after five years, they had completely restored it, turning it into a weekend haven for the Toronto executive. A piece of Ontario history had been preserved. The original turbines are still there and so are the trout. The Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario awarded their top honour for 2006 to David Powell and Fenwick Bonnell when they named the restoration of the mill "project of the year" at the group's annual design awards.

This is the "other" side of the Glade Creek Grist Mill at Babcock State Park in West Virginia. With all of the snow, we had the place completely to ourselves today. What a difference from last Fall when there were people everywhere.
