Reflection V

--

As introduction, let me offer words from the essay, “Better Speak,” by Hank Willis Thomas:

… I encountered Audre Lorde’s “Litany for Survival.” The last few lines are emblazoned on my soul:

and when we speak we are afraid

our words will not be heard

nor welcomed

but when we are silent

we are still afraid

So it is better to speak

remembering

we were never meant to survive.

“Better to speak!” echoes in my mind whenever I feel like shriveling up and hiding in the corner rather than being exposed or critiqued. There is sheer audacity required to write words for a broader audience, even more to get up and read those words aloud. I feel the same is true for contemporary visual artists. To speak is almost to say “I know,” but in most cases artists are speaking about things they don’t know, or are still in the process of knowing. I feel like poetry is at its best when it speaks to the process of knowing, dangling on your heart right before it gets to your mind.

There is sheer audacity required to put one’s work—words or marks—out for view and review. What the artist makes reveals that very process of unearthing some glimmer of knowledge or understanding. Sometimes that view appears sublime. Other times it reveals a raw wound.

Rooted and Unmoored presents a range of views in the consideration of place. The process began during a residency at

Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, near Otis on the Oregon Coast. While there I immersed myself in that physical place, a landscape

not dissimilar to Grays Harbor, which is the place that I call home. For six weeks I found myself uprooted yet grounded, and shaped ideas that reflected the view around me—from the cathedral of spruce forest to the dappled greens of an alder grove to the infinite shades of blue and gray reflected by river and ocean.

After returning home I continued to look with fresh eyes, in order to translate the familiar into visual language. A favorite walk takes me to the confluence of the Hoquiam River and the Chehalis, and turning west reveals the Harbor’s wide mouth, attuned to the sky. This horizon line, and the space above and below, with its shapes, colors, and textures, provides ample inspiration.

For me, looking outward required the balance of looking within, to reflect upon one’s internal “place.” This process mined memories, observations, and imaginings that I’d been recording in written form over the years. It also took into consideration the deep influence that reading holds over me. The Box Poem series develops such narratives.

While I still shy away from the sheer audacity required to speak, I remain compelled to do so. I hope that these works will—

like well-crafted poems—dangle upon your heart, and linger on your mind.

artist statement

In my art-making as a whole—even in its most abstracted forms—a sense of place is often at the root of the work. Perhaps a particular piece evokes the natural beauty of the physical landscape. Perhaps it reflects on the emotional landscape of literature. Or it may speak to a mental place, a state of mind.

I look for form to follow concept. I strive to shape a meaningful experience for the viewer. And my love for the written word means that the textual elements in my work are not secondary. I am drawn to processes and materials that invite touch, that celebrate the tactile qualities that encourage us to connect with one another. This seems a lovely counterweight to our rushed, mass-produced, twittering world.

artist biography

Carrie L. Larson, born in Bellingham, Washington, moved throughout the Northwest during her childhood, until settling in Aberdeen with her family. There she graduated from JM Weatherwax High School, then moved to Walla Walla, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 from Whitman College, where she was privileged to study art under Keiko Hara.

Since then she has practiced her calling—most recently in a chaotic home studio—sending her artwork out to juried shows throughout the region, including venues as far away as Chicago and Denver. One of her artist’s books, Red, Revisited, was included in Lark Crafts recent publication, 500 Handmade Books, Volume 2, juried by Julie Chen.

Carrie, along with husband John, currently calls Hoquiam home. There she is quietly active in her community, does freelance work as a color consultant and occasional floral designer, and operates a 5x8 Craftsmen letterpress under the concinnity press imprint. She is also responsible for a well-worn library card and a garden filled mostly with weeds and good intentions.

_______________________________________________________________

I am deeply indebted to so many who have supported my path—

To list everyone by name might require several volumes.

For now, let me offer deep gratitude to a handful:

to the college library crew, particularly Valerie, Sarah & Stan;

to Miss Swartz, 3rd grade teacher at Selah Elementary in 1979,

who set the foundation;

to my mentor, Keiko Hara, who challenged her students

while modeling artistic discipline and dedication;

to Ron Westman, gentle critic and epic storyteller;

to Paul Hunter, for graciously allowing me to borrow

his beautiful words for my own ends;

to Artist Trust for resources, and the skills that led to courage;

to the folks of Sitka Center, whose generosity renewed my spirit;

and to those grounding me at home—

my rock, John, and the gray cats, who like to investigate

works in progress.

Thank you.

Sounds like an offer to me?

Walk away Scot free!

Brilliant thanks!

I’ll be off then........

After everything had quieted down, Marcus Sureshot, William, Harald, and the mysterious man made camp on the far side of the river. While William and Harald kept watch, Marcus started a conversation.

"So, who are you, and what was going on back there?"

The man frowned, "I'm just one of many traders on this river. Just my luck to catch some bandits."

Unsatisfied, Marcus pressed on, "Why would they target your barge?"

"Somebody must have tipped them off," grunted the man.

"By the way, what is your name?"

"Charles of Lenfald."

"Really? A fellow Lenfel. How encouraging," smiled Marcus, "I'm Marcus Sureshot, my friends are William and Harald."

"Pleased to meet you all, you came in the nick of time," thanked Charles.

"Not soon enough to save your friend, I'm afraid," apologized Marcus.

"Regrettable, but the blame rests on me," rebutted Charles, "the boy was too eager."

"Now," he continued, "As the last hour has proven, I am in need of protection. I would also like to reward you."

"We can protect you," said Marcus, "Consider our fee passage on you barge."

"I would be grateful," admitted Charles, "but I must reward you further. Thus, some of the gold I am transporting will go to you and your men at the end of the voyage, in Grahnhaven."

"You are too kind," blushed Marcus,"I will accept your gift."

With that, the two of them shook hands and set about preparing their camp for the night.

The Weld Quay Clan Jetties Waterfront Settlement

The houses used to have atap roofs but these have since been replaced with zinc sheets. The six clan jetties may be located at the backwaters of George Town but the 6ha area is home to a priceless piece of Penang’s history and a living heritage that serves as a reminder of one of South East Asia’s most important maritime ports.

The birth place of many community leaders and successful merchants, Weld Quay is a crime-free settlement – a claim several residents attest to.

Here, people consider their neighbours family and would bend over backwards to help each other – a rarity in this modern day and age.

The settlement’s oldest resident is 91-year-old great-grandfather Chew Boon Cheang. The friendly old chap doesn’t speak a word of English but will flash the warmest smile whenever he sees a tourist visiting the settlement.

His parents were pioneer immigrants who came to seek their fortune here more than a century ago. Lured by the promise of a better future for their poor families back home, Chinese immigrants from the different clans settled here and lived in groups according to their provinces. The five main clans at the jetties are Lim, Chew, Tan, Lee and Yeoh. There other immigrants stayed together at the Chap Seh Keo (Mixed Surname Jetty).

In the old days, traders from Myanmar (then Burma), Acheh and Medan in Indonesia, and Kerabi and Phuket in Thailand would come to Penang, providing opportunities for the Weld Quay settlers who were mainly boatmen, fishermen, odd-job labourers and porters, to earn a good living.

Today, the young ones, who no longer depend on the sea for a living, have moved out of the settlement while their elders continue to enjoy the wooden jetties’ laidback lifestyle.

During the Thee Kong Seh (Jade Emperor’s birthday), Phor Tor (Hungry Ghost Festival) and Kew Ong Yeah (Nine Emperor Gods) festivals, everyone comes home to dutifully embrace their religion, culture and life at the settlement. Indeed, these are the best opportunities for foreign tourists to observe some of the most interesting local ceremonies in Malaysia!

Note:

The Chew Jetty residents are particularly busy on the ninth day of Chinese New Year. That is when they celebrate the Jade Emperor’s birthday by making offerings on a 20m-long altar decorated with huge sugarcanes and colourful dragon and fish motive joss sticks. Roasted piglets, traditional cakes and fruits are offered to the deity as fireworks are lit at the stroke of midnight.

At the Lim Jetty, elaborate floats take to the streets during the Hungry Ghost Festival while stage performances are held for the wandering spirits and deities.

To mark the end of the annual Kew Ong Yeah (Nine Emperor Gods) Festival, devotees who follow a strict nine-day vegetarian diet are let by mediums to the edge of the sea to “send off” the deities. Lost in a deep trance, these mediums perform mind-boggling feats like bathing in hot oil, walking over hot coals and piercing their bodies with long, sharp objects.

VAâs annual Brain Trust summit offers platform for innovations in brain health and head trauma

From a software platform for traumatic brain injury to a virtual reality device that assists Veterans with behavioral health issues, 15 competitors pitched a diversity of ideas during demo day at the Brain Trust: Pathways to InnoVAtion summit, hosted by VA on May 18 in Boston. The annual two-day event assembled more than 350 invited participants from the federal government, private industry, professional sports, medical research, caregivers and Veteran communities to collaborate and advance discussions around the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. âWe have an unbelievable opportunity to accelerate the speed of change,â said retired Army Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, CEO of Optum Military and Veterans Group, to the 15 industry and academic innovators who had come to pitch their ideas on TBI and head trauma to a panel of judges. âToday, the impossible gets challenged.âAfter reviewing a series of short presentations from competitors, the judges selected three winners: The Daptly Display, a gesture and voice-controlled assistant for the home or office; Save a Warrior: A peer-to-peer, archetypal approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury; and Recovery Acceleration Program for mild TBI by King-Devick Technologies. The winners will have the potential opportunity to implement and deploy their innovations with VA. âWe feel incredibly honored to be selected as a winner of the VA Innovation awards, which will further our opportunity to provide services to our Veterans,â said Steve Devick, CEO of King-Devick Technologies, who explained how his project would help Veterans impacted by TBI. âThe King-Devick technologies innovations are related to the fact that eye movements and vision are responsible for approximately 55 percent of brain function. âAs a result, implementing our recovery acceleration program by involving these pathways leads to faster concussions and TBI recovery when used with standard remediation. Additionally, caregivers can measure defects in eye movements, which may lead to dosage changes in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimerâs disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinsonâs disease. â  During the event, VA officials announced key partnerships with several influential organizations, including: Amazon, which donated 100 Echo devices with Alexa voice service to VAâs Assistive Technology Labs to help meet the needs of Veterans; Cohen Veterans Bioscience, which is coordinating efforts with VA to integrate data across dozens of labs to facilitate breakthroughs in trauma-related disorders; Booz Allen Hamilton; Comcast; Concussion Legacy Foundation; GE; IBM; Infinite Hero Foundation; Johnson & Johnson; Optum; Outward Bound; PenFed Foundation, Philips; the Warrior Care Network and the National Institutes of Health, which is co-hosting a âState of the Scienceâ workshop in 2018 that will focus on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases. Miracles

Thousand of devotees offer testimonials of miracles through the intercession of the Virgin of Aranzazu. One of the most popular is when during one typhoon season in the country, San Mateo was in danger of flooding that it was decided to bring out the image of the Virgin from her shrine and to be brought in every area in San Mateo. It is said that once the Virgin faced each household or area, the floods suddenly subsided. Another case was during the Typhoon Yolanda that would also threaten Rizal area and it was at that time the Episcopal Coronation of Nuestra Senora de Aranzazu will take place. Heavy rain downpour was looming in the area yet when the Virgin arrived for her Episcopal Coronation, the rain suddenly stopped and the coronation ceremony took place.

Other miracles from her devotees were recorded by the shrine and can be seen in the prayer chapel of the Virgin from cures from different diseases like cancer, passing of qualifying examinations for different professions, financial aids, reconciliation of families, conversion of non believers among others that the people of San Mateo gave their loving devotion and affection to their beloved patroness over the centuries.

With hills, water and classical architecture overlaid by a fabulous collection of trees and shrubs, Stourhead was described as ‘a living work of art’ when first opened in the 1740s. Meandering paths offer vistas through trees to classical temples and surprises at every turn. Stourhead is breathtaking in any season but on sunny spring and autumn days, the flowering spring shrubs and the flaming autumnal colours of the trees reflected in the magnificent lake are breathtaking.

Henry ‘the Magnificent’ was one of a small group of early eighteenth-century ‘gentleman gardeners’ using their acres to create a particularly personal landscape which expressed their hopes and beliefs about the world and their journey through it. His vision, recreating a classical landscape, depended on water.

The centre piece of the garden at Stourhead is the lake, which dictates the path you take and the views you enjoy. The damming of the river and the creation of the lake was an ambitious undertaking. Henry ‘the Magnificent’ and his architect Henry Flitcroft planned it before work began on the garden buildings such as the Temple of Flora, Pantheon and Grotto.

The original planting of the garden was undertaken by a team of 50 gardeners, who planted and tended beech, oak, sycamore, Spanish chestnut, ash and holm oak.

Dr. Carol Wilson-Spigner

In keeping with this year’s theme, Celebrating the Past ~ Imagining the Future, the Opening Plenary Session offered a look back to the founding of the Children’s Bureau and sets the stage for reflecting on past successes with an eye toward future endeavors. The challenges facing children and families in those early days, advocacy efforts and strategies pursued to improve child welfare, the historical context in which these efforts occurred, and lessons learned over the decades were addressed by the three featured speakers.

Dr. Cecelia Tichi set the historical stage for the founding of the Children’s Bureau 100 years ago. At the time, a public suspicion of governmental intrusion into family life fueled a sharpening of political knives against the newly formed Bureau, despite a staggering U.S. infant mortality rate. Dr. Tichi presented the challenges the ladylike Julia Lathrop, a social worker from the Midwest, faced when she assumed the position of Chief of the first Federal agency devoted to the country’s most continuously vulnerable population.

Dr. Richard Krugman reviewed some of the highlights as well as low points in the Children’s Bureau’s 100-year history. He focused particularly on efforts to address child maltreatment in his self-described “highly opinionated” presentation.

Dr. Carol Wilson-Spigner identified infant mortality and child labor as two of the Children’s Bureau’s early initiatives. Focusing on strategies used and the impact of initial work, she addressed the lessons for the 21st century—emerging themes that include partnership and constituency building and creating linkages among issues and change strategies.

Preciosa Ornela now offers your favourite PRECIOSA Candy™ Pressed Bead in the new PRECIOSA Candy Rose variant. The well-known two-hole, low cabochon with a round base with a diameter of 8 and 12 mm is now highlighted with engraving at the top arches so that it resembles a rose.

This new version enables the creation of contrast when it is combined with the smooth original bead. The traditional shallow curvature in the lower section, similar to that in the PRECIOSA Candy™ Pressed Bead, greatly simplifies sewing around the bead and stringing it with other beads of the same type or indeed using it with other seed beads and selected beads from the PRECIOSA Traditional Czech BeadsTM brand.

Make use of the options provided by these low, two-hole cabochons, supplement them with PRECIOSA Rocailles in a suitable color or combine them with other popular shapes, such as PRECIOSA Twin™ or PRECIOSA Solo™, and create an elegant fashion accessory.
