As introduction, let me offer words from the essay, “Better Speak,” by Hank Willis Thomas:
… I encountered Audre Lorde’s “Litany for Survival.” The last few lines are emblazoned on my soul:
and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid
So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive.
“Better to speak!” echoes in my mind whenever I feel like shriveling up and hiding in the corner rather than being exposed or critiqued. There is sheer audacity required to write words for a broader audience, even more to get up and read those words aloud. I feel the same is true for contemporary visual artists. To speak is almost to say “I know,” but in most cases artists are speaking about things they don’t know, or are still in the process of knowing. I feel like poetry is at its best when it speaks to the process of knowing, dangling on your heart right before it gets to your mind.
There is sheer audacity required to put one’s work—words or marks—out for view and review. What the artist makes reveals that very process of unearthing some glimmer of knowledge or understanding. Sometimes that view appears sublime. Other times it reveals a raw wound.
Rooted and Unmoored presents a range of views in the consideration of place. The process began during a residency at
Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, near Otis on the Oregon Coast. While there I immersed myself in that physical place, a landscape
not dissimilar to Grays Harbor, which is the place that I call home. For six weeks I found myself uprooted yet grounded, and shaped ideas that reflected the view around me—from the cathedral of spruce forest to the dappled greens of an alder grove to the infinite shades of blue and gray reflected by river and ocean.
After returning home I continued to look with fresh eyes, in order to translate the familiar into visual language. A favorite walk takes me to the confluence of the Hoquiam River and the Chehalis, and turning west reveals the Harbor’s wide mouth, attuned to the sky. This horizon line, and the space above and below, with its shapes, colors, and textures, provides ample inspiration.
For me, looking outward required the balance of looking within, to reflect upon one’s internal “place.” This process mined memories, observations, and imaginings that I’d been recording in written form over the years. It also took into consideration the deep influence that reading holds over me. The Box Poem series develops such narratives.
While I still shy away from the sheer audacity required to speak, I remain compelled to do so. I hope that these works will—
like well-crafted poems—dangle upon your heart, and linger on your mind.

In my art-making as a whole—even in its most abstracted forms—a sense of place is often at the root of the work. Perhaps a particular piece evokes the natural beauty of the physical landscape. Perhaps it reflects on the emotional landscape of literature. Or it may speak to a mental place, a state of mind.
I look for form to follow concept. I strive to shape a meaningful experience for the viewer. And my love for the written word means that the textual elements in my work are not secondary. I am drawn to processes and materials that invite touch, that celebrate the tactile qualities that encourage us to connect with one another. This seems a lovely counterweight to our rushed, mass-produced, twittering world.

Carrie L. Larson, born in Bellingham, Washington, moved throughout the Northwest during her childhood, until settling in Aberdeen with her family. There she graduated from JM Weatherwax High School, then moved to Walla Walla, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 from Whitman College, where she was privileged to study art under Keiko Hara.
Since then she has practiced her calling—most recently in a chaotic home studio—sending her artwork out to juried shows throughout the region, including venues as far away as Chicago and Denver. One of her artist’s books, Red, Revisited, was included in Lark Crafts recent publication, 500 Handmade Books, Volume 2, juried by Julie Chen.
Carrie, along with husband John, currently calls Hoquiam home. There she is quietly active in her community, does freelance work as a color consultant and occasional floral designer, and operates a 5x8 Craftsmen letterpress under the concinnity press imprint. She is also responsible for a well-worn library card and a garden filled mostly with weeds and good intentions.

VA’s annual Brain Trust summit offers platform for innovations in brain health and head trauma
From a software platform for traumatic brain injury to a virtual reality device that assists Veterans with behavioral health issues, 15 competitors pitched a diversity of ideas during demo day at the Brain Trust: Pathways to InnoVAtion summit, hosted by VA on May 18 in Boston. The annual two-day event assembled more than 350 invited participants from the federal government, private industry, professional sports, medical research, caregivers and Veteran communities to collaborate and advance discussions around the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. “We have an unbelievable opportunity to accelerate the speed of change,” said retired Army Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, CEO of Optum Military and Veterans Group, to the 15 industry and academic innovators who had come to pitch their ideas on TBI and head trauma to a panel of judges. “Today, the impossible gets challenged.”After reviewing a series of short presentations from competitors, the judges selected three winners: The Daptly Display, a gesture and voice-controlled assistant for the home or office; Save a Warrior: A peer-to-peer, archetypal approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury; and Recovery Acceleration Program for mild TBI by King-Devick Technologies. The winners will have the potential opportunity to implement and deploy their innovations with VA. “We feel incredibly honored to be selected as a winner of the VA Innovation awards, which will further our opportunity to provide services to our Veterans,” said Steve Devick, CEO of King-Devick Technologies, who explained how his project would help Veterans impacted by TBI. “The King-Devick technologies innovations are related to the fact that eye movements and vision are responsible for approximately 55 percent of brain function. “As a result, implementing our recovery acceleration program by involving these pathways leads to faster concussions and TBI recovery when used with standard remediation. Additionally, caregivers can measure defects in eye movements, which may lead to dosage changes in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. ” During the event, VA officials announced key partnerships with several influential organizations, including: Amazon, which donated 100 Echo devices with Alexa voice service to VA’s Assistive Technology Labs to help meet the needs of Veterans; Cohen Veterans Bioscience, which is coordinating efforts with VA to integrate data across dozens of labs to facilitate breakthroughs in trauma-related disorders; Booz Allen Hamilton; Comcast; Concussion Legacy Foundation; GE; IBM; Infinite Hero Foundation; Johnson & Johnson; Optum; Outward Bound; PenFed Foundation, Philips; the Warrior Care Network and the National Institutes of Health, which is co-hosting a ‘State of the Science’ workshop in 2018 that will focus on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases. This is a photograph from the 4th annual running of the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs New Year Road Challenge which was held in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, Ireland on Sunday 10th January 2015 at 13:00. The race is organised by the local GAA club called Lough Lene Gaels. There were two races on offer today - a 10KM road race and a 5KM road race, fun run, and walk. This is one of the first road races in the midlands of the New Year 2016 and attracted over 300 runners, joggers and walkers. As this was a community orientated event families were especially welcome in the 5KM race. The race was organised to raise funding for the development of the GAA pitches for the Lough Lene Gaels Hurling and Camogie Clubs. Overall this was a very successful event with a very large field of well over 300 participants in both races combined. The great local effort was exemplified by a very big local contingent from Collinstown and neighbouring areas. The 5KM race was an out and back course on the Collinstown to Fore Road. The 10KM was also on an out and back course with a deviation between 2KM and 7KM for the longer race. There were several tough hills but an equal amount of down-hill. For most participants both races were the proverbial race of two halves with the outward section down-hill and wind assisted with the return leg from Lough Lene to the finish (about 2.5KM in total) up hill and with a stiff sharp cold breeze in the face. Hot and cold refreshments were provided in the Lough Lene Inn Pub afterwards with prize-giving.

Collinstown is about 11 miles northeast of Mullingar in Co. Westmeath. The dominant geographical feature of the area and of both races is the beautiful Lough Lene a large freshwater lake close to the village. The water in the lake is internationally noted for the purity and clarity of its water and Lough Lene has regularly been awarded the blue flag status for water quality from the European Commission. It is well known amongst anglers. It covers approximately 430 hectares with water is measured to depths to 20m.

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. The centre offers vocation training in Xinaha(hand-painting), tailoring , computer, electronics, mobile phone repairing, carpentry, and literacy classes to all kinds of children & women, not just vulnerable children - free of charge. Students receive 6 months of training, then start their home business, or receive job referral from the training centre. There are 60 students in this centre. Interview: Where are the teachers from? Recruited by the centre. What is the most popular class? For girls: tailor (learning sewing for 6 months in level 1, then move up to level 2 in design & tailoring), for boys: electronics. What do students do after completion of course? After the students graduate from the class, they can make a living, and help support their families. Why does the in-charge person have the mission to operate this centre? As it is one of the ways to support the development of the society and government by equipping the local people with skills. Class example: Classes for illiterate women of any age. They will learn basic alphabets, and even a grandmother comes to that centre to learn how to read and write. Class example: Informal education for ages 7-14. This class is for girls who dropped out from school and only attend Quran school in the morning and the vocational centre in the afternoon. In the world of boxing, there is one name that stands out above all others: Rodger Senior. This incredible kangaroo boxer has captured the hearts and minds of fans around the world with his unmatched skill and technique in the ring.
Rodger Senior made his professional debut at the young age of 18 and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. Based on a 24-acre site, Catalyst Inc. is at the heart of Northern Ireland’s hi-tech economy.
A graving dock, or dry dock, is an enclosed basin which can be flooded allowing a ship to be floated in, then drained to allow it to rest on blocks for maintenance or repair. Typical use of dry docks were for the cleaning, removal of barnacles and rust, and re-painting of ships' hulls. Queen’s Island is home to three graving docks, all of which survive today.
Catalyst Inc (formerly known as the Northern Ireland Science Park) was established in March 1999 to create a self-sustaining, internationally recognised, knowledge-based science park in Northern Ireland offering a commercial and research driven centre for knowledge-based industries. The park is located in the Titanic Quarter, Queen's Island, Belfast and hosts a range of international and local technology related companies. It currently has six buildings in operation offering 210,000 square feet (20,000 m2) of workspace. The Science Park was initially conceived under the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, which designated funding for such a park in Northern Ireland. The not-for-profit NISP Foundation was founded in 1999 by the University of Ulster and Queen's University Belfast (with both Vice Chancellors, Gerry McKenna and George Bain being founding board members), along with representatives of the business community. After everything had quieted down, Marcus Sureshot, William, Harald, and the mysterious man made camp on the far side of the river. While William and Harald kept watch, Marcus started a conversation.
"So, who are you, and what was going on back there?"

"Somebody must have tipped them off," grunted the man.
"By the way, what is your name?"
"Charles of Lenfald."
"Really? A fellow Lenfel. How encouraging," smiled Marcus, "I'm Marcus Sureshot, my friends are William and Harald."
"Pleased to meet you all, you came in the nick of time," thanked Charles.
"Not soon enough to save your friend, I'm afraid," apologized Marcus.
"Regrettable, but the blame rests on me," rebutted Charles, "the boy was too eager."
"Now," he continued, "As the last hour has proven, I am in need of protection. I would also like to reward you."
"We can protect you," said Marcus, "Consider our fee passage on you barge."
"I would be grateful," admitted Charles, "but I must reward you further. Thus, some of the gold I am transporting will go to you and your men at the end of the voyage, in Grahnhaven."
"You are too kind," blushed Marcus,"I will accept your gift."

Mama Drink Up - Cocktail Tasting At Mamagoto
The Mamagoto Team invited Team Shivangi Reviews to come on down and sample their new and innovative Cocktail list which was specially prepared for us by their newly built cocktail team.
As part of the launch night of the #MamaDrinkUp they offered interesting starters and refreshing cocktails.
Mocktails (non alcoholic) will also be available on the menu, so teens and people who have to drive a long way back home can enjoy the lovely terrace at Mamagoto, Khan market with an interesting beverage in their hand; they have something for everyone.
The mixologists created drinks with kaffir lime leaves infused in silver tequila, thyme infused in dry gin and fresh vanilla pods as well as juniper berries soaked in vodka.
They also have a new menu of shots and pitchers that include different sangria recipes as well as old school flavoured Margaritas, Daiquiris, and Mojitos.
Mamagoto would be an ideal place to celebrate a birthday, a boy’s night out or simply a girly night.
Mamagoto has always been my preferred place to dine and the restaurant management teamed up with their amazing kitchen team to bring us mouth-watering starters and other nibbles with all kinds of drinks.
It was a very pleasant evening and the staff was very hospitable. Asian eating has always been a lot of fun at Mamagoto but with the introduction of these new beverages, Mamagoto has given a whole new meaning to their tag line: “to play with food”!
On the 9th July 2011 I was walking slowly along Soi Buakhao in Pattaya. It is a very long Soi and very popular at night time ~ bars, massage parlours, pharmacies, convenience stores, rental shops for motorbikes and cars, can all be found here. I was shooting some videos and taking photos for my web site. When I heard “Motorbike taxi sir?”, I looked round and it was a young Thai lady chatting to her friend at a bar. I strolled across and told her I would like to do a running video on the bike and call at a few places on the way, like Phra Tamnak hill, the big Buddha hill, along Jomtien and back round the Sukhumvit road. “ How much ?” I asked, she replied 200 Baht. It turned out to be one of the best 200 Baht I ever spent. She was a good driver not stupid on a Motorbike and pleasant to talk to. The trip provided me with over 20 videos and many photographs along the way.
Reaching the other part of the hill at Phra Tamnak ( a road cuts through the middle of the hill ) you will be greeted by a very large fat Buddha. This Buddha image is called Luang Phor Yhai by Thai people, the Wat Khao Phra Bat temple is here also. The Buddha statue is 18 metres tall and is at the very top of Phra Tamnak hill in between Jomtien and South Pattaya. Each day many Thai people and other visitors pay homage and offer prayers here. The Buddha offers good things in life and good times depending on the day of the week you were born. They call this spot Big Buddha hill and the Buddha is one of the largest in Chonburi Province.
It was established in 1977 and is affectionately called Luang Phor Yhai by the Thai people. As you approach the top a small car park enables those travelling by car to park their car. A long straight and impressive stair case leads you to the top and the temple and Buddha area. At the base of this and prominently displayed on both sides of the staircase are two 7 headed serpents or snakes called Nagas that emerge out of the mouth of a larger and longer Dragon resting along the sides of the staircase, its body rising and falling all the way up. It is very impressive to see painted in gold and other striking colours at the base and heads of these fierce looking serpents.
At the very top you cannot miss the very large, golden Buddha perched high on this hillside. Scattered around the courtyard are smaller Buddha images. Originally this Buddha was painted white now it is all gold. The smaller Buddha images each represent their own role in life and represent the days of the week. Dependant on the day you were born you have your own guardian Buddha which is named on the day of its birth.
Mondays Buddha will bring you peace.
Tuesdays Buddha will give you peaceful sleep.
Wednesdays Buddha means you are a giving person.
Thursdays Buddha allows you peace of mind to meditate.
Fridays Buddha will give you happiness.
Saturdays Buddha will ensure your protection from the elements.
Sundays Buddha will search for the needy and care for them.
The temple here is on the right of the stairs at the top of the hill. The stairs are not steep, and each step has been made so they are not too high a step and are therefore easy to ascend for the old and those with walking difficulties. The temple has within its sacred part Semsee sticks, which are long strips of flat wood which are numbered 1 to 28 and placed into a container which you shake until one springs out for you, from out of the container. When you check the number on this stick read off from the chart on the wall behind to find your destiny. There is also now a Chinese temple on the left that contains relief’s and sculptures, a small lake sets off the temple.

1). PARIS (AP News) — Religious statues set atop Notre Dame Cathedral have come down for the first time in over a century as part of a restoration of the monumental Paris church’s towering spire.
A 100-meter-high (105-yard) crane lowered the copper statues representing the 12 apostles and four evangelists onto a truck, giving the public a ground-level look for the first time on Thursday.

The 3-meter-tall statues are being sent to southwestern France for work that is part of a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project on the cathedral spire and its 250 tons of lead.

PARIS (AP) — The Latest on a fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (all times local):
11:35 p.m. -- French President Emmanuel Macron has promised to rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral and says he is seeking international help to restore the Paris landmark.
Macron said after the French capital’s fire chief announced the emergency response had changed into a monitoring and mop-up operation, “The worst has been avoided although the battle is not yet totally won.”
Macron said a national fundraising campaign to restore Notre Dame would be launched Tuesday and he called on the world’s “greatest talents” to help.
The French leader credited the “courage” and “great professionalism” of firefighters with sparing Notre Dame’s facade and two landmark towers from being destroyed.
