Jana and George McClelland offered a guided tour of the calf nursery barn. They raise Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss cows.
FILED NOTES:
• Calves are born out on pasture and stay with mom for the first day.
• Claves are born with no bacteria in their system so a bottle of colostrum containin good bacteria is brought out to the pasture for them to get good bacteria before they can be introduced to a bad bacteria.
• After a day in the pasture with their mothers, the calves are brought into the nursery and kept safe in cribs (the red pens behind Jana) until they are about two months old.
• Calves are go to the nursery for biosecurity reasons - they are not resistant to the disease and bacteria adult cows are.
• They closely monitor their health and make sure they are eating/drinking proper amounts - receiving the attention they need for being newborns in the nursery
• They are fed three times a day. They are started out on bottles and eventually taught how to drink out of a bucket.
• They are fed raw goat milk and good quality raw Jersey milk for the sick ones.
• They graduate to group pens, like elementary school because they learn a lot, hey learn how to lay in loafing stalls, how to eat together and socialize with the heard.
• They graduate from calf barn at about 5 months old (off to Junior High).
• They are just like humans, cows that eat well and experience less stress live longer, healthier lives, and animals in their care live in comfortable, safe, low-stress environment.

VA’s annual Brain Trust summit offers platform for innovations in brain health and head trauma
From a software platform for traumatic brain injury to a virtual reality device that assists Veterans with behavioral health issues, 15 competitors pitched a diversity of ideas during demo day at the Brain Trust: Pathways to InnoVAtion summit, hosted by VA on May 18 in Boston. The annual two-day event assembled more than 350 invited participants from the federal government, private industry, professional sports, medical research, caregivers and Veteran communities to collaborate and advance discussions around the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. “We have an unbelievable opportunity to accelerate the speed of change,” said retired Army Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, CEO of Optum Military and Veterans Group, to the 15 industry and academic innovators who had come to pitch their ideas on TBI and head trauma to a panel of judges. “Today, the impossible gets challenged.”After reviewing a series of short presentations from competitors, the judges selected three winners: The Daptly Display, a gesture and voice-controlled assistant for the home or office; Save a Warrior: A peer-to-peer, archetypal approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury; and Recovery Acceleration Program for mild TBI by King-Devick Technologies. The winners will have the potential opportunity to implement and deploy their innovations with VA. “We feel incredibly honored to be selected as a winner of the VA Innovation awards, which will further our opportunity to provide services to our Veterans,” said Steve Devick, CEO of King-Devick Technologies, who explained how his project would help Veterans impacted by TBI. “The King-Devick technologies innovations are related to the fact that eye movements and vision are responsible for approximately 55 percent of brain function. “As a result, implementing our recovery acceleration program by involving these pathways leads to faster concussions and TBI recovery when used with standard remediation. Additionally, caregivers can measure defects in eye movements, which may lead to dosage changes in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. ” During the event, VA officials announced key partnerships with several influential organizations, including: Amazon, which donated 100 Echo devices with Alexa voice service to VA’s Assistive Technology Labs to help meet the needs of Veterans; Cohen Veterans Bioscience, which is coordinating efforts with VA to integrate data across dozens of labs to facilitate breakthroughs in trauma-related disorders; Booz Allen Hamilton; Comcast; Concussion Legacy Foundation; GE; IBM; Infinite Hero Foundation; Johnson & Johnson; Optum; Outward Bound; PenFed Foundation, Philips; the Warrior Care Network and the National Institutes of Health, which is co-hosting a ‘State of the Science’ workshop in 2018 that will focus on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases. William S. Christian was a Confederate army officer, a temperance organization leader, and a doctor who worked in Middlesex County.
William Steptoe Christian was born on December 26, 1830, in Middlesex County, the son of Elizabeth Robinson Steptoe Christian and Richard Allen Christian, a physician who in 1838 became a Baptist minister. His elder brother Joseph Christian served on the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. William Christian attended local preparatory schools and in 1848 received an AB from Columbian College (later George Washington University), in Washington, D.C. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, in 1851 and returned to Middlesex County, where he began practicing medicine at Urbanna.
On January 11, 1853, in Halifax County, North Carolina, Christian married Helen Elizabeth Steptoe, a cousin a few years older than he. They had two daughters and four sons, two of whom died in infancy, before her death on December 6, 1898.
In 1859 Christian raised a cavalry company known as the Middlesex Light Dragoons, which became Company C of the 55th Virginia Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War (1861–1865).
Christian was wounded twice during the war: first at the Battle of Glendale (1862) and then again at the Battle of Chancellorsville (1863).
Christian had recovered sufficiently from his wounds to participate in the Army of Northern Virginia's advance into Pennsylvania that summer. A letter written to his wife from camp, dated June 28, 1863, and later found on the battlefield at Gettysburg, described the foraging expeditions of the Confederate invaders, including the capture of terrified African Americans to be sent to Virginia and enslavement. The text of his recovered letter was published in a collection of war documents in 1864, and historians regularly cite it in books about the Gettysburg campaign.
He was imprisoned for less than a year at Johnson's Island in Ohio. Christian worked long hours as the superintendent of the prison's hospital and, as a physician, persuaded the authorities to permit prisoners to secure clean drinking water from Lake Erie. While there he composed a long poem, entitled "The Past," describing in rhyme his life and his love for his wife and family. Christian was exchanged on March 3, 1864, and returned to his command.
Lingering effects from his wounds and his desire to serve in the army's medical department led Christian to resign his commission in March 1865. Soon thereafter he joined his wife and children in North Carolina, where they had sought safety as refugees. Christian practiced medicine there for eighteen months and rebuilt his finances before returning to Malvern Hill, his house in Middlesex County. Affectionately known as Doctor Billy, he was a highly respected local physician who took pride in his moniker as a country doctor.
After the war Christian returned to Urbanna to practice medicine. From 1876 to 1881 he served as state head of the Independent Order of Good Templars, an international temperance league.
In 1880 he set up a segregated Dual Grand Lodge in Richmond, accommodating members who believed African Americans should be admitted to the society while pacifying white southerners who resisted that notion.
Christian was also a member of the Medical Society of Virginia and Middlesex County's board of health and, from 1890 to 1909, the superintendent of Middlesex County's public schools.
Christian married Alice Taylor Woodward, of Middlesex County, on July 10, 1900. They had no children.
William Steptoe Christian died at Malvern Hill on December 10, 1910, and was buried by the Urbanna Masonic Lodge, of which he was a past master, at the family cemetery at Hewick, an estate north of Urbanna.

He ran out on Carly's mom to deliver Abbie. When the girls were in the 1st grade we met and we figured this out. She said "oh so you were the one!" "The Shaker story offers a fascinating insight into the early years of American history, religion and culture.
The Shakers trace their beginnings to Manchester, England, in 1747. As Millennialists, they believed that Christ’s second coming was realized in their leader, Ann Lee, whom they called Mother Ann. Misunderstood and persecuted in their native England, the Shakers nonetheless gathered a small group of enthusiastic followers to their new Christian lifestyle and beliefs.
In 1774, Mother Ann Lee made the monumental decision to lead eight Shaker converts on a journey to America, seeking the freedom to live, work, and worship according to their main religious tenets: celibacy, communal life, and confession of sin. The Shakers also believed in racial and gender equality, simplicity, and pacifism. They dedicated their lives to creating a working Heaven on Earth amidst the boundless opportunities presented by settlement of the New World.
The small group of Shaker converts left England on the ship Mariah and arrived in in New York harbor in 1774. Ann Lee and her eight Shaker followers soon purchased land and settled near Watervliet, New York, a frontier wilderness northwest of Albany. While establishing a place to live in communal brotherhood and sisterhood at Watervliet (and also at nearby New Lebanon, New York), Mother Ann embarked on a series of missionary journeys throughout New York and New England, gathering many converts to this new Christian movement.
Mother Ann passed away in 1784, and one of her early English disciples, Father James Whittaker, assumed the leadership of the fledgling society. After Father James’ death in 1787, Elder Joseph Meacham succeeded as the first American-born leader. Elder Joseph soon appointed another American-born convert, Mother Lucy Wright, as his co-leader, and together they worked to gather the scattered groups of Brethren and Sisters into an expanding network of communal villages of Believers. Hancock was the third of what would eventually number nineteen major Shaker communities established between 1783 and 1836 in New York, New England, Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana.
