Another highlight is the colorful Hornbills and Toucans exhibit, the world's largest collection of Southeast Asian Hornbills.Jurong Bird Park

The Southeast Asian Birds Aviary houses in its 24 individual aviaries and a main walk-in aviary, more than 100 species of birds from the equatorial jungles of Southeast Asia. The birds' natural equatorial habitat is re-created within this exhibit, including simulated tropical thunderstorms everyday at noon.

One of the newly opened areas of the park is the African Waterfall Aviary, home to more than 1,500 free-flying African birds. This is an enclosed sexton of the park with many small tropical birds and a beautiful man-made waterfall.

The Lory Loft showcases the Lory, a native bird of Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Jurong Bird Park presents “The Early Bird Breakfast Show”, featuring a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with some of its prized birds, which includes Big John, a 45-year-old Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Merlin-the Yellow-Naped Amazon, Eclectus Parrots and more. Visitors will get the chance to mingle with these birds while having breakfast amidst the lush surroundings of the Jurong Bird Park. The programme takes place at the Bongo Burgers Terrace daily, with breakfast starting at 8.30am and the show beginning at 9.15am. For reservations, call (65) 6661 7856.

The Bird Discovery Centre, a living classroom is where visitors will be able to find the answers to their questions on birds as well as see the different stages of a bird’s life from an embryo to an egg, come up close to the now-extinct Elephant bird, specimens of birds’ anatomies, and many more. The Bird Discovery Centre is open to visitors from 8.30am to 6.00pm daily.

The Bird Park added yet another feather to its cap with the addition of The Riverine - a simulated natural freshwater river habitat featuring over 20 species of ducks, fishes and turtles.

The best way to start a tour of the Bird Park is to board the modern, air-conditioned panorail system. Its route covers the entire Park, providing excellent elevated views of the various exhibits. A walking tour is then suggested, using the Park's footpaths and map.

Open: 8:30 am - 6 pm (daily) (Last ticket sale at 5.30pm)

What shall I do with this absurdity --

O heart, O troubled heart -- this caricature,

Decrepit age that has been tied to me

As to a dog's tail?

Never had I more

Excited, passionate, fantastical

Imagination, nor an ear and eye

That more expected the impossible...

It seems that I must bid the Muse go pack...

From 1954 Maserati offered the final edition of the A6G sports car. As with its predecessor, the sales designation 2000 GT was frequently used in brochures and advertisements. On the race tracks of the World Sports Car Championship, the corresponding offshoots were called A6GCS. By 1957, only 60 Maserati A6G/54 cars had been built, with the bodies being exclusively built by external coachbuilders such as Allemano, Zagato and Frua.

This dealer was also the one who started the ball rolling for the A6G/54 Frua Spider. After a Spider based on a A6GCS chassis with the engine of the A6G/54 was completed in Pietro Frua’s workshop in the spring of 1955, Mimmo Dei ordered a small series of ten vehicles. However, only the first one was given the same design as the original model. The other nine were given an extended front and other modifications in detail. Different bumpers and small fake air intakes on the rear fenders for example.

The two-tone car, painted in red with a wide white stripe, was used for a few photos that appeared in the car magazines Quattroruote and Motor Trend. In October 1956 the Parisian dealer Simone & Thépenier handed over this A6G/54 to its first owner, a Mr. Cavet from Venezuela. Until the car reappeared in the USA in the mid 1970s, not much is known about its whereabouts in the early years. In 1978 Louis Rader bought the car from Thomas Dailey in California. At that time the original drivetrain was missing and the car had been repainted dark blue. Under the hood a Ford 289 V8 was working. Mr. Rader painted the Maserati red, but otherwise left it in the condition it was bought and sold it to Dana Beall and Mick Brackett around 1990.

This Frua-bodied A6G/54 Maserati has been created for #mocaroundgang #mocaround66 to the theme of #convertible hosted by @spamala808

VAâs annual Brain Trust summit offers platform for innovations in brain health and head trauma

From a software platform for traumatic brain injury to a virtual reality device that assists Veterans with behavioral health issues, 15 competitors pitched a diversity of ideas during demo day at the Brain Trust: Pathways to InnoVAtion summit, hosted by VA on May 18 in Boston. The annual two-day event assembled more than 350 invited participants from the federal government, private industry, professional sports, medical research, caregivers and Veteran communities to collaborate and advance discussions around the prevention and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussion. âWe have an unbelievable opportunity to accelerate the speed of change,â said retired Army Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho, CEO of Optum Military and Veterans Group, to the 15 industry and academic innovators who had come to pitch their ideas on TBI and head trauma to a panel of judges. âToday, the impossible gets challenged.âAfter reviewing a series of short presentations from competitors, the judges selected three winners: The Daptly Display, a gesture and voice-controlled assistant for the home or office; Save a Warrior: A peer-to-peer, archetypal approach for healing combat trauma and moral injury; and Recovery Acceleration Program for mild TBI by King-Devick Technologies. The winners will have the potential opportunity to implement and deploy their innovations with VA. âWe feel incredibly honored to be selected as a winner of the VA Innovation awards, which will further our opportunity to provide services to our Veterans,â said Steve Devick, CEO of King-Devick Technologies, who explained how his project would help Veterans impacted by TBI. âThe King-Devick technologies innovations are related to the fact that eye movements and vision are responsible for approximately 55 percent of brain function. âAs a result, implementing our recovery acceleration program by involving these pathways leads to faster concussions and TBI recovery when used with standard remediation. Additionally, caregivers can measure defects in eye movements, which may lead to dosage changes in chronic degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimerâs disease, multiple sclerosis and Parkinsonâs disease. â  During the event, VA officials announced key partnerships with several influential organizations, including: Amazon, which donated 100 Echo devices with Alexa voice service to VAâs Assistive Technology Labs to help meet the needs of Veterans; Cohen Veterans Bioscience, which is coordinating efforts with VA to integrate data across dozens of labs to facilitate breakthroughs in trauma-related disorders; Booz Allen Hamilton; Comcast; Concussion Legacy Foundation; GE; IBM; Infinite Hero Foundation; Johnson & Johnson; Optum; Outward Bound; PenFed Foundation, Philips; the Warrior Care Network and the National Institutes of Health, which is co-hosting a âState of the Scienceâ workshop in 2018 that will focus on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and other neurodegenerative diseases. The Landmannalaugar area offers several hiking tracks across breathtaking landscapes. The tracks are usually marked by means of wooden poles that should be visible even when the ground is covered with snow. The hikes can be quite challenging, thus, good hiking boots, warm clothes, walking sticks and a backpack with water and some food are highly recommended. It is possible to buy a map at the information hut at the campsite. Unfortunately, even if it provides basic indications about the difficulty and traveling times for all the available tracks, it is far from being a serious map, since for instance the terrain contour lines are missing. As a consequence it is hard to evaluate the climbs and downhills slopes. Furthermore I am not 100% sure you can count on a professional rescue service as the ones available on the swiss alps. Thus, if you are not sufficiently trained or unsure about your capabilities either limit yourself to the easier tracks or join one of the hikes organized by the local rangers.

This unique design has been made in the 90s by White and since then it hasn't been produced anymore, still I think that any Doc Martens cannot just clumber up to it. This rare pair of wonder is made out of leather (inside&outside) dyed blue with celestial overlays in yellow. The boots are of excellent quality, a little bit used but in good condition, as you see on the photos.

Another 'old world' dish offered during maternity rest finding new life in a new age.

Unlike the vinegar stewed pig trotters, I love this dish. The oily fragrance of sesame oil fits and gels with the oily aldehydic nature of Chicken like a glove. The chicken pieces are usually pre-quick fried to seal in the juices and then returned back to the wok/pot to be cooked with sesame oil. The end product can range from a version with thick oily gravy to another version that is almost soupy.

It is exceptionally good as a dish to accompany steamed white rice.

A must for every serious collector.

This is a link to the tradition of the memento mori - an object designed to remind us that life is brief and that we should seize the moment while we are here.

Since the beginning of time, the skull is been used as a symbol of mortality, victory, the ultimate Memento Mori.

The skull represented the contemplation of eternity.

In Elizabethan England, it was an emblem of bawds, rakes and sexual adventure. Its a symbol men, in particular, have always loved to paint, carve, cast, and wear.

Provenance:This unique piece comes directly from the famous Skulls collection of Dr.Atanas Karamanov, who was the personal physician to King Ferdinand I of Bulgaria. Dr.Karamanov was also a member of the first Bulgarian Regular Masonic Lodge named “Balkanska Zvezda” c1890's . His collection contain over 1200 skull watches, skull goblets, skull victorican jewelry etc...

Sul retro del fondello è inseguita una composizione del Grim Reaper Skeleton e pochi teschi.

Quadrante in smalto fine raffigurante un teschio. Mani originali.

Hidden London offer tours of the disused Jubilee Line platforms at Charing Cross, as well as some ventilation shafts and access tunnels. The tours are well organised with really informative tour guides, and are very interesting.

The Charing Cross section of the Jubilee Line closed relatively recently in 1999. It was not due to low passenger numbers, but to do with the extension to Stratford. It would have been very difficult to incorporate Charing Cross into the new route via Waterloo, so it was closed. It isn't completely disused though, the track is still live and occasionally used as sidings (if there is a major event at Wembley Stadium for example), and is also used for filming, such as with the James Bond film 'Skyfall'.

Belgian postcard offered by Kores 'Carboplane', no. 145. Photo: 20th Century Fox. Harry James in Do You Love Me (Gregory Ratoff, 1946).

Harry James (1916-1983) was an American trumpeter and film actor. He was also one of the most popular big band leaders of the first half of the 1940s, and is considered the discoverer of singer Frank Sinatra. James continued to lead his orchestra until just before his death, 40 years later.

Henry Haag 'Harry' James was born in a rundown hotel next to the city jail in Albany, Georgia, in 1916. Harry was the son of Everette Robert James, the bandleader and trumpet player in the orchestra for the Mighty Haag Circus, and Maybelle Stewart Clark James, an aerialist of the circus. When Harry was four, he started to work as a contortionist and was billed as "The Youngest Contortionist in the World." At seven, the family settled in Beaumont, Texas, where Harry learned to play drums. His father taught him the trumpet from the age of 10, and two years later, he played trumpet in the band of the Christy Brothers Circus, for which his family was then working. Harry won a trumpet competition and then went on to play in local dance groups. He played regularly in Herman Waldman's orchestra, where he was noticed by nationally popular bandleader Ben Pollack. James joined his orchestra in 1935 and made his first recordings with Pollack in 1936. Shortly afterwards, he joined Benny Goodman, then leading one of the country's most popular bands, where he was one of the star soloists until 1938. During his time with Goodman, he was already recording under his own name for Brunswick Records (later absorbed by Columbia Records). He also played on recordings by Teddy Wilson (1937) and Lionel Hampton (1938). In 1939, he launched his big band that became known as Harry James and His Music Makers. Mike McKinley at IMDb: "He made his debut in Philadelphia at the Ben Franklin Hotel and soon was a nationwide favorite of dance lovers and jazz addicts, rocking the rafters at the Hollywood Paladium, Chicago's famous College Inn at the Hotel Sherman, Frank Dailey's Meadowbrook in Cedar Cove, NJ, and then onto New York City." With this orchestra, Harry James played and toured until the 1980s. Until 1953, the bandleader scored more than seventy hits in America. His first hit was ‘All or Nothing at All’ in 1939. The orchestra played music between Jazz and dance music, as was common in the swing era. The orchestra was often supplemented by strings. Several musicians of (later) name and fame played in the group, including Ray Conniff, Willie Smith, Buddy Rich, Nick Fatool and Juan Tizol. Several vocalists also became well-known, including Dick Haymes, Helen Forrest, Kitty Kallen and Louise Tobin, with whom he was married for eight years (1935-1943) and had two children. The most famous singer to sing with James was undoubtedly Frank Sinatra. Sinatra worked as a waiter in a New Jersey restaurant, and James gave him a job singing in his band. By the end of that year, Sinatra switched to Tommy Dorsey's band.

1939-1940 was a difficult period for Harry James. He was even dumped by Columbia Records. James changed musical tack and came up with a sweeter sound. He returned to Columbia and soon the hits came, such as ‘Music Makers’ and ‘Lament to Love’ (both 1941). William Ruhlmann at AllMusic: "Late in the year, James reached the Top Five with an instrumental treatment of the 1913 song 'You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It).' This was the record that established him as a star. But with its sweet style and what was frequently described as James' "schmaltzy" trumpet playing, it was also, according to jazz critic Dan Morgenstern (as quoted in the 1999 biography 'Trumpet Blues: The Life of Harry James' by Peter J. Levinson), "the record that the jazz critics never forgave Harry for recording."). In 1942, James scored seven top-ten hits, three of which featured vocals by Helen Forrest. James was second only to Glenn Miller as the most successful recording artist of the year. He also had hits in the following years, including several with material he had recorded before the recording tape, such as a reissue of ‘All or Nothing at All’ sung by Sinatra. He performed for radio and took over the programme Chesterfield Time from bandleader Glenn Miller, when Miller went into the armed forces. James was ineligible for military service due to a back injury. He also played in hotels and theatres in New York, but wartime travel restrictions and the recording ban called by the musicians' union, which took effect in August 1942, limited James' touring and recording activities. Then another avenue opened up: Hollywood. His first film was Syncopation (William Dieterle, 1942), covering a quarter-century of American 'syncopated' music. It was followed by Private Buckaroo (Edward F. Cline, 1942) with The Andrews Sisters and Springtime in the Rockies (Irving Cummings, 1942), which also starred Betty Grable. The two married in 1943 and had two children. They divorced in 1965. Goodman also appeared in the films Two Girls and a Sailor (Richard Thorpe, 1944) and Bathing Beauty (George Sidney, 1944) starring Esther Williams. After the end of the recording ban, James was able to record new material again, and by 1945, he had seven top-ten hits. After the war, the hits dried up, and in a period of decline of the big bands, James also disbanded his orchestra. By 1947, he was back with a slimmed-down band, playing more Jazz.

In the following years, Harry James acted in several films. He played on the soundtrack to the film Young Man with a Horn (Michael Curtiz, 1950), in which Kirk Douglas played James' trumpet. He scored hits with Doris Day and Frank Sinatra and had his own television show, The Harry James Show, in 1951. He played himself in the film biography The Benny Goodman Story (Valentine Davies, 1955). In the mid-1950s, he switched to another record label, Capitol Records, for which he recorded many albums. His band sounded like Count Basie's at the time, so the bandleader employed ex-Basie arrangers like Neal Hefti. There were two more film appearances, The Big Beat (Will Cowan, 1958) and The Ladies Man (Jerry Lewis, 1961). With his band, he toured at home and abroad and performed in hotels in Las Vegas. In that city, he met his third wife, showgirl Joan Boyd, to whom he was married only briefly (1968-1970). When James was diagnosed with cancer (malignant lymphoma) in 1983, he continued to play, giving his last concert on 26 June 1983, only nine days before his death at 67. He was entombed in the Eden Vale Mausoleum, Las Vegas, Nevada. In the same year, he was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. He had five children, including two daughters with Bety Grable: Victoria Elizabeth James (1944), and Jessica James (1947). William Ruhlman: "No one questioned James' talent as a jazz trumpeter, though after his commercial ascendance in 1941, many jazz critics dismissed him. After his period of greatest success, he turned back to a more jazz-oriented style, which failed to change the overall impression of him, if only because he was no longer as much in the public eye. Nevertheless, his swing hits remain among the most popular music of the era. In addition to the Columbia recordings from his heyday, there are numerous other titles in his discography, notably many airchecks, though his recordings of the '50s are also worth seeking out." The orchestra bearing the name of Harry James is still active, being conducted by trumpeter Fred Radke.

Located in Rawtenstall, south of Burnley, Lancashire. The Picture House was opened on 29th December 1920 with “The River’s End” and “The Cruise of the Make Believes”. It has an attractive façade, faced in white terra cotta. Inside the auditorium seating was provided for 1,309 in stalls and circle levels. The proscenium was 30 feet wide. It was equipped with a Western Electric (WE) sound system. There was also an organ installed (possibly a ‘straight’ church type instrument).

In December 1960 it was taken over by the Leeds based Star Cinemas chain, and they closed the Picture House in 1975. It was quickly taken over by the Unit Four Cinemas chain, and the cinema was split into 4-screens, seating 121, 118 & 165 & 118. It was re-named Unit Four Cinemas.

It was closed on 10th May 1984. It was reopened by an independent operator, but operating just one 121 seat screen and a snooker club. Two further changes of operator followed and it finally closed in early-1996.

The building was converted into an indoor market and a snooker club. In September 2013, there were plans to convert the building into a fast food outlet. By September 2018 the building was offered ‘For Sale’ as a nightclub or leisure opportunity. However in early-2020 plans were submitted to convert the building into 42 apartments.

More than 200 high school students from 12 teams competed in the Maryland National Guard annual Joint Service Junior ROTC Field Meet on April 13, at Gunpowder Military Reservation in Glen Arm, Md.

Century High School, home of the Knights in Sykesville, Md., won the over all competition in ten different events that tests the students level of physical fitness and ability to work together and leadership.

“We placed second two years in a row, this year we were determined to win,” said Cadet Capt. Michael Donellan from Sykesville, Md. “It was a great meet, it was well organized and a lot of fun. This year we won six individual events.”

The schools were from all across the state representing all branches of service and their Junior ROTC programs, including the Freestate Challenge Academy. Each team consisted of 20 students, but only eight could compete at one time and at minimum of two of the students had to be females. The events consisted of a physical fitness test, first aide, rope bridge, egg toss, tire flip, leadership reaction course, tug of war, Humvee pull, issy dizzy and an obstacle course.

“This is a fun way for the students to come together, compete and develop their leadership and communication skills,” said Lt. Col. (ret.) Bruce Kale, event coordinator and retired member of the Maryland National Guard. “These are good kids and they come from all different backgrounds with one goal: to be the best that they can be.”

Winters Mill is the only other high school in Carroll County to offer Junior ROTC and they competed in the meet. Century High School received approval from the U.S. Army and the Carroll County Board of Education to offer Junior ROTC in 2005.

We Are Moco

The Moco Museum focuses on proven artists with a unique vision.

With artists like Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, JR, KAWS, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and more, we offer visitors an unparalleled collection of subversive art in which irony and humor are used to reflect on modern society. A one-of-a-kind experience aimed at a wide audience, a visit to Moco is a true eye-opener.

Studio Irma. Reflecting Forward expresses endless connections to reveal what the future can look like. Studio Irma x Moco introduces Connectivism as a new art movement. Through compassion and empathy, we arrive at a shared understanding. So, in our collective choice to experience this digital immersive art exhibition, we are Reflecting Forward in search of Connectivism.

Brightly colored lights, movement, and music drive you through these interactive, digital spaces: Diamond Matrix, Kaleidoscope, We All Live in Bubbles, Connect the Dots & Universe.

Connectivism stresses that internet technologies like web browsers, search engines, and social media contribute to new ways of understanding and learning in our digital age. - Studio Irma

Banksy. A mysterious British artist known for his humorous and political street art. The Banksy exhibition at Moco contains several of his infamous street pieces, as well a large number of his indoor works, including work on canvas. One of these is his giant 'Beanfield' painting, a beautiful piece that is displayed on the ground floor. An impossible-to-miss eye-catcher as you enter the Banksy exhibition. Other highlights include 'Girl with Balloon', 'Laugh Now' and 'Keep It Real'. The Banksy collection at Moco Museum: come check it out!

The Modern Contemporary (Moco) Museum has made its home in Villa Alsberg, a townhouse overlooking Museumplein in the heart of Amsterdam. The building was designed in 1904 by Eduard Cuypers, nephew of the renowned Pierre Cuypers who designed Amsterdam's Central Station and the Rijksmuseum, which is at the opposite end of the square. This privately-owned residence was one of the first family homes built along Museumplein and retained this function until 1939. Subsequently, the house was let to priests who taught at the Saint Nicolas School in Amsterdam, and later it was converted into an office for a law firm.

No effort is spared to ensure that this breathtaking mansion makes an impact on visitors, adding an extra layer to the Moco experience. There is one small drawback, though: charming as the building is, its compact size does mean it can feel crowded during peak hours.

The Moco Museum is a private initiative of Lionel and Kim Logchies. The exhibited works of art are on loan from their carefully cultivated international network of art collectors. Part of the proceeds from the museum will be donated to charities that are close to the hearts of the initiators.

December 27, 2018 - "Rising over 700m above the Jordan Valley, Mount Nebo offers spectacular views of the Promised Land as seen by Moses. On the platform at the summit is a modern sculpture by an Italian artist representing Moses' staff and Jesus' words in John 3: "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up."

Elements of a triple-apse Byzantine basilica were uncovered by archaeologists in the 1930s, and have been incorporated into the structure of the modern church building, known as the Memorial Church of Moses. The modern additions to the church are very simple, consisting of little more than a shelter over the fascinating excavations and ancient mosaic floors.

Just inside the entrance to the left is the excavated Old Baptistery, which has one of the most interesting ancient mosaics in Jordan. The baptistery and the mosaic can be precisely dated to August 531 thanks to a Greek inscription, which also names the three workers who created it and the bishop at the time (Elias).

The Old Baptistery mosaic is in remarkably pristine condition because another one was laid over it just a few decades later in 597. The underlying mosaic remained hidden for nearly 1,400 years until it was discovered in 1976 when the one on top was removed for restoration (it now hangs on a wall).

The mosaic of 531 is a large square divided into four strips of scenes of men and animals, surrounded by a chain-style border. The top two sections depict fierce hunting scenes: a shepherd fighting a lion, a soldier fighting a lioness, and two horseback hunters defeating a bear and wild boar.

The lower scenes are pastoral but with a touch of the exotic: a shepherd watching his goat and sheep graze in the shade of trees; an ostrich on a leash held by a dark-skinned man; and a boy holding the leashes of a zebra and a spotted animal that looks very much like a camel but might be intended to represent a giraffe.

There are more mosaics in the nave and side aisles of the church, including some fragments of the 597 mosaic pavement. The oldest mosaic in the church is a braided cross displayed on the south wall.

Also hanging here are mosaics of animals from the Church of George in Mukhayyat. One of these is from 536 and has an inscription that some believe is the earliest example of Arabic script in Jordan (others argue it is old Aramaic).

In the far right-hand corner of the church is the New Baptistery (597 AD), which was previously a funerary chapel. It includes a small mosaic originally from the threshold bearing the greeting, "Peace to all."

Next to the New Baptistry, a lovely mosaic cross from the original 4th-century church stands on a modern altar in its original location. A photograph of the Pope praying at the same altar is proudly displayed.

Next to the exit door is the Theotokos Chapel, added in the 7th century where three rooms of the monastery previously stood. Its apse has a mosaic of a square object that may be a ciborium (vessel for the Eucharist) or altar canopy, accompanied by bulls and gazelles. The floor of the chapel is paved with mosaics of plants and flowers." Previous text from the following website: www.sacred-destinations.com/jordan/mount-nebo

Sea Oats look rather like stalks of wheat, and they offer protection from erosion for the dunes, so they are a protected plant and you're not allowed to pick them. Of course, visitors to the state have no idea what they look like, so either they ignore the warnings and risk fines, or they keep away from everything! (which is actually not such a bad thing!)

The clump of what looks like the top of a palm tree is palmetto. Palmetto is a type of palm that serves as shrubbery in our region. It is dense, and somewhat impenetrable, so it offers protection not just to dunes, but to the creatures that live in them, such as birds, snakes and insects. (Hence the name, "Palmetto Bug", which is a less objectionable way of saying "big freaking roach"!)

Walkways aren't just put over the dunes for convenience, but to protect both the dune vegetation and wildlife from people, and to protect the people from the wildlife! If you've ever walked through some of Florida's most dense areas, you know how unpleasant (and dangerous) it can be! Few people go happily frolicking through the brush on their way down to the beach. In more uninhabited places like this one at the Canaveral National Seashore, you might not MAKE it to the shore!

I've often been surprised watching parents ignore their children as they reach over a log or sit on one, or climb over a walkway railing, getting into the palmettos, as this is prime rattlesnake territory, not to mention coral snakes, which I recently learned they quit making anti-venom for! I don't know what they do for someone if they do get bitten by one of them now.

Anyway, beyond the rough and tumble parts of Florida's coastline lies what everyone wants to see- the beach. Views like this are what draw everyone here, and it's views like this that keep many of us here. If you put the problems against the obvious pluses, these views would win hands down any day of the week, and HAVE been doing so for generations, despite prickly palms, great big bugs, and venemous biting things! What you see here has changed very little in over 100 years. With any luck, it will remain for the next 100 years, just as it is.

This is a photograph from the 5th annual Craughwell 10 Mile Road Race which took place in Craughwell Village, Co. Galway, Ireland on Sunday 23rd March 2014 at 13:00. The 'Craughwell 10' has grown quickly to become not just one of Connaught's best known and attended road races but one of Ireland's best road races. Rather uniquely for road races in Ireland today the Craughwell 10 Mile road race offers a fully traffic free route for participants. The fast primarily flat course brings participants on the network of rural country roads to the west of Craughwell village. This year's event attracted a record number of over 650 participants building on the 600+ finishers from last year's race (results available below).

The organisation team of Craughwell AC and a huge team of volunteers from the local community deserve great praise and congratulations on the excellent work that they put into making the Craughwell 10 such an outstanding success. A race of this size is a mammoth undertaking and it's flawless organisation is a tribute to the volunteer work behind the scenes.

Route Description

The race starts in Craughwell Village and then heads west on country roads. The route takes a right turn after 1KM and heads north towards Caheradine. The route then takes a left and heads west again towards the N18. After 4 miles the race takes another left (goo.gl/maps/khTi4) heading south. Just before 6 miles another left turn brings the race back towards Craughwell village. This leaves the runners with a straight run to the finish area from here and the finish in the Primary School. There was a stiff cold breeze at different parts of the course but for the most part there was good stretches of tail winds also. There were water stations at two points in the course.

The AAI County Galway 10 mile Road Race Championships took place in conjunction with the race today which ensured that there was great competition amongst Co. Galway based clubs at all categories.

The spread of refreshments after the race was incredible. Every taste was catered for. The organisers were thoughtful enough to include a wide range of gluten free goodies for participants after the race.

I would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

Sam Smith, publisher of the D.C. Gazette and progressive activist, is shown in a June 24, 1974 the day before he turned down the Statehood Party’s offer to be the candidate for D.C. Council chair in the upcoming elections.

He had been drafted at the Statehood Party’s convention the week before and said he was tempted to run because the presumed forerunner, Sterling Tucker, would turn over the city to the board of trade.

“Sterling Tucker and Walter Washington are political equivalents of Fruit Loops, sweet-tasting cereal circles comprised largely of additives and artificial flavoring wrapped around exactly nothing,” he said.

Despite Tucker’s registration as a Democrat, Smith referred to him as a “Republicrat.”

According to the Evening Star, “Smith said he thought he could beat Tucker in a race based on issues and debate but said there was no way he could overcome ‘his money, his friends at the Board of Trade and the White House and the kind of mindless sloganeering typified by that marvelously informative poster, ‘Washington for Washington.’”

Smith’s problem with running was that he contemplated a campaign that neither solicits nor accepts campaign contributions.

In 1966 Smith took part in a day-long SNCC boycott of Washington DC transit buses, giving rides to boycotters with his car.

After his article on the action appeared, Smith was visited by the local chair of SNCC, Marion Barry who was seeking help with public relations and a long relationship was established.

That same year, 1966, Smith launched a community newspaper called the Capitol East Gazette to serve a largely poor, black neighborhood of Washington DC.

Aided by a $2,000 grant from a local Lutheran church, the Gazette went on to cover such issues as plans to build a huge network of freeways in the city, the war on poverty, public education, neighborhood battles, and urban planning.

Smith’s paper was pro-civil rights and anti-Vietnam War

Smith also became a vociferous advocate of statehood for the District of Columbia and was a founder of the D.C. Statehood Party

In 1969, the paper was renamed the DC Gazette and became a citywide alternative newspaper.

During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the activist journalist Smith was a fixture at demonstrations, picket lines, public hearings, press conferences and meetings of activist causes of many stripes.

Smith later help found the Green Party.

In 1984, the Gazette’s name was changed to Progressive Review which published until 2004. Smith was also the author of a number of books.

Progressive Review and its Gazette predecessors are online at prorev.com
