It's really easy to get to Bend from Sunriver. Start by going east on S. Century Drive to Hwy 97. Turn north on Hwy 97, which goes right through Bend. Along the way you may glimpse some of the native wildlife, including deer, elk, coyotes, and eagles.

A chence meeting with a warden deep in an ancient beech wood revealed how to access the church, she even showed me which way out of the wood to emerge nearest the church.
Quits some difference to my last visit, on a cold a dreary February day last year. This time sprng had fully sprung, the churchyard fill of new growth and the air full of bird song.

Hidden down narrow lanes this surprising church offers much to the churchcrawler. Norman in origin but thirteenth century in form, the piers of both arcades have surprisingly detailed capitals. The rood screen still divides nave and chancel, though the coving and much of the rest is replacement. Its upper and lower doorways survive, the lower one having its original medieval hinges. The font is thirteenth century but at some time has had new piers – old photos show it with a solid base. The north tower dates from the 20th century and was designed by Bensted of Maidstone – a gothic fantasy if ever there was one compared to the plain structure it enhanced. A ledger slab in the chancel commemorates a senior lawyer at the New Inns of Court and describes him as ` ancient ` - not in age but in seniority!

square piers with chamfered corners and trefoiled archlet to
heavy moulded abaci, Roof of 3 tall crown posts. Single
chamfered arch on imposts from chancel to chapel and blocked
arch to demolished north chapel. Double chamfered chancel arch.
Fittings: trefoil headed piscina in chancel. Rood screen:C15
perpendicular. Five bays, each with four-light traceried openings-
with crenellated oblique transoms. Vine motif frieze above blank
tracery on lower panels, with angels, eagles and roses in
spandrels. Attached shafts support frieze of Tudor flowers with

COMMONLY called Starchfield, adjoins to the parish of Easling south-eastward. It is called in Domesday, Stanefelle, which is the same as Stonefield, a name well adapted to the flinty soil of it.
THE PARISH is an unfrequented and obscure place, situated in a wild and dreary country, near the summit of the chalk hills, just above Charing, its southern boundary. It lies on high ground, exceedingly bleak, and exposed to north and north-east winds. The land in it is in general a red cludgy earth, of very stiff tillage, very barren, wet and flinty, and the inhabitants, as well as the country, are equally poor. It has continued hill and dale in it, the greater part of it is coppice wood, which is mostly beech and oak, usually felled at sixteen and eighteen years growth, and even then from its sort, and its out of the way distance from markets, is not of any great worth; what village there is stands round Starchfield-green, lying near the summit of the hill, on the road to Charing, at the south-west part of the parish, the church in the opposite part of it, and the parsonage midway between them. Near the north-east boundary of the parish, next to Throwley, is an estate called Holborne, but its proper name is Holbean, belonging to St. Bartholomew's hospital, in London; it is said formerly to have belonged to the north chantry of this church of Starchfield.
THIS PLACE, at the time of the taking of the general survey of Domesday, in 1080, was part of the possessions of Odo, bishop of Baieux, under the general title of whose lands it is thus described in it:
The same Adam (de Port) holds of the bishop Stanefelle. It was taxed at two sulings. The arable land is four carucates. In demesne there is one carucate, and ten villeins, having two carucates.There is a church,and six servants,and two acres of meadow.Wood for the pannage of sixty hogs.In the time of king Edward the Confessor it was worth sixty shillings, and afterwards forty shillings,now one hundred shillings,Turgis held it of earl Godwin.
On the bishop of Baieux's disgrace, about four years afterwards, this, among the rest of his possessions, came into the hands of the crown, so that Adam de Port before-mentioned, became the king's immediate tenant of it, of whose heirs it was again held afterwards by Arnulf Kade, who gave this manor, with that of Ore and its appurtenances, to the knights hospitallers, and it was assigned by them to the jurisdiction of their preceptory at Swingfield.
This manor continued part of their possessions till the general dissolution of their hospital, in the 32d year of Henry VIII. After which this manor did not remain long in the hands of the crown, for the king, in his 36th year, granted it to Sir Anthony St. Leger and his heirs male, to hold in capite by knight's service, who by the act of the 2d and 3d of Edward VI. procured his lands in this county to be disgavelled. After which, Edward VI. in his 4th year, made a grant of this manor to him and his heirs, to hold by the like service. (fn. 1) He immediately afterwards passed it away by sale to Sir Anthony Aucher, of Bishopsborne, whose son Sir Anthony Aucher, about the beginning of king James I.'s reign, sold it to Salter, whose descendant Sir Nicholas Salter, possessed it at the restoration of Charles II. They bore for their arms, Gules, ten billets, four, three, two, and one, a bordure engrailed, argent, charged with sixteen burts and torteauxes, alternately. His son Nicholas Salter, esq. of Stoke Poges, in Buckinghamshire, died in the reign of king William and queen Mary, leaving one son John, who was of London, surgeon, and three daughters, towards the raising of whose portions, he by his will ordered this manor to be sold, which it accordingly was, in 1699, to Mr. Richard Webbe, of Eleham; he, in 1711, after some controversies at law for the possession of it, alienated all his right and title to it to the trustees, for the periormance of the will of dame Sarah Barrett, widow of Sir Paul Barrett, serjeant-at-law, who had died in the beginning of that year.
She was the only daughter and heir of Sir George Ent, M. D. of London, and president of the college of physicians, and widow of Francis Head, esq. eldest son of Sir Richard Head, bart. who died in his father's life-time. She had by her first husband one son, Sir Francis Head, bart. of and a daughter Sarah, married to John Lynch, esq. of Groves, father of John Lynch, D D. dean of Canterbury, who left issue Sir William Lynch, K. B. and John Lynch, LL. D. archdeacon and prebendary of Canterbury.
Lady Barrett, by the trusts of her will, devised this manor to her male issue by her first husband in tail male, remainder to the issue of Sarah her daughter by the same husband in like tail, remainder to her several daughters and their heirs in fee; by virtue of which limitation, her grandson Sir Francis Head, bart. at length succeeded to it, and son his death in 1768, without male issue, his next brother Sir John Head, bart. and archdeacon of Canterbury, became possessed of it, and died s. p. in 1769, leaving his widow lady Jane Head, sister of Dr. William Geekie, prebendary of Canterbury, surviving, on whom he had settled this manor in jointure; she died in 1780, on which the property of it, under the above will, became vested in lady Barrett's next heir male Sir William Lynch, K.B. of Grove, who was her great-grandson, being the eldest son of John Lynch, D. D. dean of Canterbury, the son of John Lynch, esq. by Sarah his wife, her daughter by Francis Head, esq. who, to bar all further remainders, with his brother Dr. John Lynch, suffered a recovery of this manor, and died in 1785, s. p. After which it was alienated to the Rev. Wanley Sawbridge, who dying unmarried and interstate in 1796, it came to his two nephews and heirs-at-law, Samuel-Elias and Wanley Sawbridge, esqrs. who are the present possessors of it. A court baron is held for this manor.
DARBIES-COURT, is a manor situated in the northwest part of this parish, which took its name from a family who resided at it, and were of the rank of gentlemen in very early times, for in the antient registers and rolls of Kentish gentry, their coat armour is thus described, Party, per chevron embattled, or, and azure, three eagles counterchanged. In the 20th year of king Edward III. Sara de Darbye paid aid for lands here, which William de Darbie and the heirs of Thomas Franklyn held before in Winsfield, of Reginald de Cornhill, by knight's service; and there is a hamlet and valley adjoining to Darbies-court, once part of it, called at this time Wingfield, and Wingfield valley. Of this family was John Darbie, who was alderman of London, and sheriff in 1445, anno 24 Henry VI. who built the south isle of St. Dionis Backchurch, in that city, and was otherwise a good benefactor to it; in memory of which, the above-mentioned coat of arms was put up in the windows of it. (fn. 2)
But the manor of Darbies court was alienated by one of that family, in the beginning of the reign of Henry IV. to Sir Ralph St. Leger, of Otterden, who died in the 10th year of that reign, leaving a daughter Joane, then the wife of Henry Aucher, esq. of Newenden, who entitled her husband to the possession of it. In whose descendants this manor continued till the reign of queen Elizabeth, when it was alienated to Sir Michael Sondes, then of Eastry, who was the second son of Sir Anthony Sondes, of Throwley, and on his elder brother Sir Thomas Sondes's death, in 1592, without male issue, succeeded him in his seat at Throwley, as well as the rest of his intailed estates in this county. He afterwards resided at Throwley, where he died in 1617, anno 16 James I. Since which this manor has descended, in like manner as Throwley and Lees-court, in Sheldwich, both which the reader will find described in the future part of this volume down to the right hon. Lewis-Thomas, lord Sondes, the present possessor of it. A court baron is held for this manor.
Charities.
ROGER PAYNE, ESQ. late of Otterden, by his will in 1706, gave 20l. chargeable on his estate at Otterden, to poor housekeepers of this parish; which is placed out at interest at 4l. per cent. the yearly distribution of it being vested in the minister, churchwardens, and overseers.
The poor constantly relieved are about thirty; casually thirty-five.
This PARISH is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Ospringe.
The church, which stands near the centre of the parish, is dedicated to St. Mary. It is built in the form of a cross; the steeple stands in the middle of the south side. In the north wall of the north chancel is an antient tomb, with the effigies of a man in armour lying at length on it. In the east window are these coats of arms, Sable, a chevron gules, between three clothworkers handles, or; another, the coat broke, impaling, Quarterly, azure and argent, per fess indented, surmounted by a battune, or, and azure.
The church of Ore was antiently accounted as a chapel to this of Stalisfield, but it has been long since separated, and become a distinct church independent of it.
The church of Stalisfield belonged to the priory of St. Gregory, in Canterbury, perhaps part of its original endowment by archbishop Lansranc, in the reign of the Conqueror, and it was confirmed to it, among the rest of its possessions, by archbishop Hubert, about the reign of Richard I. (fn. 3)
In the 8th year of Richard II. it was become appropriated to the above-mentioned priory, and a vicarage endowed in it, the former being then valued at twelve pounds, and the latter at four pounds, on the taxation of them.
The church, with the advowson of the vicarage, remained part of the possessions of the priory till the dissolution of it in the reign of Henry VIII. when they came into the hands of the crown, where they remained but a small time, for an act passed that year to enable the king and the archbishop of Canterbury to exchange the scite of the late dissolved priory of St. Radigund, near Dover, with all its possessions, lately given by the king to the archbishop for the scite of the late dissolved priory of St. Gregory, and all its possessions, excepting the manor of Howfield, in Chartham.
This church becoming thus part of the revenues of the see of Canterbury, was demised by the archbishop, among the rest of the revenues of the priory, in one grands beneficial lease, in which, all advowsons and nominations of churches and chapels were excepted, and it has been continued under the same kind of demise from time to time ever since, renewable in like manner as such leases usually are.
¶Philip, earl of Chesterfield, was lessee of this parsonage as part of the above premises, as heir to the Wottons, after whose death in 1773, the lease was sold by his executors to George Gipps, esq. of Canterbury, who is the present lessee under the archbishop for the parsonage of Stalisfield, among the rest of the possessions of the priory of St. Gregory, but SamuelElias and Wanley Sawbridge, esqrs. as heirs of their uncle the Rev. Wanley Sawbridge, late vicar of this parish, are the occupiers of it, at a yearly reserved rent under him. The parsonage consists of a house, buildings, yard, and small orchard, ninety-four acres of land, and nine acres of wood, let together with the tithes of corn, at 75l. per annum; besides which, there are sixteen acres of woodland more in the hands of the lessee of the parsonage, worth 3l. 10s. per annum. It pays 7s. 6d. procurations to the archdeacon, and 6s. 4d. to the archbishop at his visitations.
The vicarage of this church appears to have been endowed before the 8th of Richard II. by the taxation then made of it. It is valued in the king's books at 5l. 6s. 8d. and the yearly tenths at 10s. 8d. and is now of the yearly certified value of 33l. 18s. 3d. In 1587 there were sixty-one communicants here. In 1640 it was valued at only 35l. and the communicants were the like number.
Archbishop Juxon, by indenture anno 13 king Charles II. and by another anno 28 of that reign, augmented it with 25l. per annum, to be paid by the lessee of the great tithes. The archbishop continues patron of this vicarage.
THERE WAS a portion of tithes in this parish, of the value of ten shillings, which was given soon after the conquest to the priory of St. Andrew, in Rochester, by Humphry Canute; and this gift was afterwards confirmed by D. de Monci, his descendant, to be holden in like manner as the same was held of his ancestors; and it was likewise confirmed to it by the archbishops Richard, Baldwin, and Hubert. (fn. 4)

I have been following his photo stream for a while, in silence because I was too shy to talk about what he is achieving both as a photographer and as a human being.
But today I listened to the songs one of his former streetkids sang.
Meu Deus ... I cannot forget his voice. It made me want to step out of my comfort zone and try to do something. Right now letting the few of you who don't know this project aware of it is all I can do. But I will do more. I owe this to them.

This seldom used trail offers vistas and interesting geology. The unshaded trail winds in a southwesterly direction with some gentle ups and downs for 1.5 miles to Turkey Creek Tank on the left. The trail crosses normally dry Turkey Creek and begins a gradual climb in the sparse shade of pinyon pine and juniper.
At 2.25 miles, it begins a moderately steep switchback ascent of the north face of House Mountain, a long extinct shield volcano. There are fine views of nearby red rock formations as well as more distant vistas north toward Wilson and Secret Mountains.
The trail reaches the crest at nearly 3 miles and begins a gradual descent over basaltic lava. Soon the view over the ancient, heavily eroded caldera opens up and the opposite rim, dominated by the lava outcrop which gave the mountain its name, is visible. The trail continues, but this is a good stopping point. Return by the same route for a 6 mile roundtrip hike. This hike can be very hot in summer.

Run to the Sun is a cool store in Anchorage, Alaska that offers swim and resort wear as well as tanning. Every year as part of the Alaska's Womens Show, Run to the Sun has a fashion show offering the latest fashion styles for us sun/beach deprived locals. The show is great to watch. Photographing it a bit tricky since the lighting at the Sullivan Arena is tough (for me) to shoot.
I've met a lot of great models through the show and hope to continue this - the women and men that Michelle uses are very classy and fun to shoot with.
FYI - the shows were in April in the past but due to scheduling conflicts the Womens Show moved to September so in 2010 we had two fashion shows. You won't hear me complaining!

The Owens Rain Forest Aviary offers bird lovers an up-close look at about 200 feathered friends representing 45 species and is one of the world’s largest walk-through avian encounters. The free-flight aviary simulates the sights and sounds of a real Southeast Asian jungle environment. It focuses on exotic species from Southeast Asia and Australia, including flowers, ferns, and foliage indigenous to that region.
You can enjoy a gentle trek along an elevated, winding pathway that begins at treetop level and immerses you in the forest canopy amidst scores of brilliantly colored tropical birds. A waterfall cascades into a pond where exotic fish glide through the water. Thick glass panels form one side of the pond, making it easy for you to marvel at these colorful swimmers.
Another waterfall sends water coursing down a rocky route the length of the aviary, splashing into a pool at the lower end of the aviary, where you may see comb-crested jacanas strolling across the floating lily pads.
As the walkway descends through mature greenery, lush waterfalls, and beaches, you may encounter a rare woodpecker chiseling through the bark of a tree or the courtship ritual of the argus pheasant at the forest-floor level. Several feeding trays are located close to the walkway railing, providing great spots to see and photograph the birds.

The car offered here is one of the first batch of 12 Porsche 356B Cabriolets out of a total of some 40 delivered new to the Rijkspolitie's SAS section. Only three are known to survive: one in the USA, one in the Porsche Centrum Nederland, and this example in private hands.
In 1962, the Rijkspolitie (Dutch Police) set up its Surveillancegroep Autosnelwegen (Motorway Surveillance Group) to patrol these new high-speed highways. At that time there was no speed limit on Dutch motorways and no guard rails either. Accidents were frequent and often fatal. Seeking a solution to this serious problem, a Rijkspolitie delegation consulted the German Police in Nordrhein Westfalen on how best to manage Holland's 500-kilometre motorway network. The 'autobahn' was, after all, a German invention. Since 1956 the German police had adopted a policy of 'overtaking surveillance' using Porsche sports cars. Motorists deemed to be driving at excessive speed were monitored, overtaken and forced to stop. This high-profile presence and firm action had a powerful deterrent effect.
Commencing in November 1960, this approach was trialled by the Rijkspolitie using a single Porsche 356 Cabriolet. The trial was successful and resulted in the creation in 1962 of the SAS, initially with 12 Porsches. The vehicle offered here is one of those 12 356B sports cars.
An elite force, the SAS underwent a rigorous selection procedure: they were required to have good driving skills and road traffic expertise, to be in excellent physical condition and be at least 25 years old. They also had to be married, preferably with children, it being considered that these responsibilities would inhibit them from taking unnecessary risks. As one would expect, this group of Porsche-driving motorway cops, with their white cars and matching helmet, tunic and long overcoat, attracted a lot of media attention. A period copy of 'de Auto' magazine featuring a Rijkspolitie 356 is on file.
The car we offer was delivered new by Pon's Automobielhandel, Holland to the Rijkspolitie's Sectie Bijzondere Verkeerstaken (Special Traffic Tasks Section) and first registered in the Netherlands on 21st March 1962. It spent the next four years in police service, known by the call sign 'ALEX 2707', and was assigned to the 'Van Rijn/De Steen' surveillance team for the entire period. Their field of operations was highway '2/26/4/4a'. 'ALEX 2707' stayed with the Rijkspolitie until 1966, by which time it had travelled more than 190,000 kilometres and received a replacement engine (Porsche certificate on file).
At the end of its service all the police equipment was removed and the car sold as a standard 356B Cabriolet. The Porsche is believed to have remained in the Netherlands, where it was purchased in 2004 by the current vendor's father, who bought the 356 not knowing it was a former police car.
A short while later, the Dutch Police contacted the owner's family to tell them they had an ex-police Porsche 356 and asked if it would be possible to come and look at the car. It was only then (circa 2005) that the quest began to obtain all the original police parts for this Rijkspolitie Porsche. It was to prove exceedingly difficult to find the 'Rijkspolitie' equipment that had been removed prior to sale, and the restoration was not finally completed until 2012.
The car is now equipped with all the original fittings with which it was delivered new, and was even re-sprayed after restoration because the white paint used was not the correct shade for this particular 356. The engine has been changed again and is now a Type 616/16 dating from 1964. Fully overhauled 1,000 kilometres ago, it is a 1,600cc 'SC' unit producing 95bhp. The odometer was zeroed at time of restoration and is currently reading 30,400 kilometres.
Original 'Rijkspolitie' features (not all connected) include the original blue AUR beacon; 'STOP' sign; Storno radio telephone (VHF); radio antenna; Pye amplifier; twin internal rear view mirrors; control buttons; ammeter; rear-mounted loudspeaker; correct stickers; and Rijkspolitie clothing including helmets. Apart from the addition of oil pressure and oil temperature gauges and tripmaster, the car is exactly as it was when delivered new to the Dutch Police.

Bryce Amphitheater rightfully gets most of the attention, but Rainbow Point at the end of the scenic drive offers unparalleled views of Utah's High Country.
In 1853 the governor of SA offered a reward of £4,000 to the first river steam boat to navigate the Murray to Wentworth and beyond. Captain Francis Cadell working with William Younghusband, a close friend of the governor received the prize although Captain William Randell of Mannum reached Wentworth in his steam boat at the same time. Cadell had named his boat after the wife of the Governor, the Lady Augusta and the Governor and a small party travelled on Captain Cadell’s boat. After this financial boost Cadell went on to establish the River Murray Navigation Company based in Goolwa. Randell established his own shipping line based in Mannum. The river trade began in earnest in 1854. The prize was intercolonial transportation of goods into western NSW and southern Qld via the Darling River from Wentworth. In the 1850s there was almost no settlement in SA along the river so the money to be made was in NSW and the upper reaches of the Murray in Victoria. Randell transported flour to Echuca, for example, for overland transport from Echuca to the goldfields at Bendigo. The early river steamers and barges were manufactured along the Murray and the lakes, often at Goolwa or Mannum or in Milang. Wool was the staple product shipped down the river from NSW and the return trips took up flour, sugar, tea, pianos, furniture, engines or whatever outback stations needed. Customs duties were due at the SA/NSW/Vic border and the Qld border. Milang established a niche role for itself in the riverboat trade; it made steamers and barges, provided captains and skilled navigators and handled the bulk of supplies going up to NSW as Milang was the closest and easiest river port to Adelaide. Duranda Terrace in Milang handled 50 to 60% of all SA exports up the river. Merchants flourished here and Landseers established a large wool handling and warehousing business with offices in Morgan, Murray Bridge, Goolwa, Wentworth, Wilcannia and Mildura. But their headquarters were in Milang.
Albert Landseer the company founder was born in England in 1829 and was a cousin to the famous British landscape painter of the same surname. Albert studied sculpture himself but gave it up to immigrate to SA. He became the agent for Captain Cadell of Goolwa in 1856 and from that contract he expanded his business all along the river. He had ten children with his first wife and six with his second. He controlled almost all the trade through Milang and was known as the “Duke of Milang.” His business partner who contributed financial support was William Dunk. Albert Landseer died in 1906 as the river trade was starting to reduce. Landseer contributed to the district by becoming a member of parliament and was a popular local identify. Alas his four storey stone flour mill and three storey warehouse in Duranda Terrace were both demolished a long time ago. (His impressive wool store in Morgan still stands.) Landseer’s flour mill operated from around 1870 to 1890 replacing the Pavy flour mill that was established in Milang in the 1850s to supply flour for the riverboat trade. The heyday of the riverboat trade was in the 19th century. Before any railways reached western NSW almost all trade was carried on the river through SA. Railways reached western NSW and upper Victoria in the 1880s. But the river trade persisted as so many stations were situated right on the banks of the Darling River and so river transport was the easiest and cheapest right into the middle 1920s. The first jetty was constructed in Milang in 1856 to get the river trade going. It was increased in length in 1859 and again in 1869 until it was 217 metres (711 feet) long. A tram track took cargo to the end of the jetty. The great Murray flood of 1956 saw half the jetty washed away.
Although much of the river boat trade died away in the 1920s some services continued, especially the local steamer service across Lake Alexandrina. Once the railway from Adelaide reached Milang in 1884 a service was started to connect with the trains to take passenger and freight across the lakes to Poltalloch station, Meningie and from there overland through the Coorong to the South East and Melbourne. The paddle steamer Dispatch plied this route from 1877 between Milang and Meningie. After 1884 other vessels were also used on this route. Trade declined considerably in Milang itself after 1878 when the SA railway reached Morgan. It then became the major river port, rather than Milang.

U.S. Army Europe Instructors Train Unit in Africa

CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti -- Instructors from U.S. Army Europe recently taught courses for 22 Soldiers assigned to Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa that will enable them to better mentor African land forces.
Soldiers from U.S. Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment underwent four weeks of training offered by instructors from the 7th Army Combined Arms Training Center, Vilseck, Germany. Two courses were taught, the Army basic instructor course and small group instructor training. The program wrapped up on Jan. 28.
The courses will help 1-65th Soldiers carry out their mission under CJTF-HOA - strengthening partner nation security capacity by assisting leadership development with African partner nations, said Lt. Col. Anthony Almeida, commander of the 1-65 INF BN.
“These courses prepare our Soldiers to conduct Mil-to-Mil operations, as they mentor partner nation militaries in different locations throughout the Horn of Africa,” Almeida said.
It’s the first time the 7th Army Combined Arms Training Center instructors offered the basic instructor course to U.S. Army Soldiers in Africa, said Jose Reyes, a 7th ACATC instructor.
“This is an 80-hour course designed to provide basic essential instructor skills they need to be a competent Army instructor,” Reyes said.
When the need for supplemental training was recently identified, U.S. Army Africa, the Army service component command for U.S. Africa Command, requested instructors from U.S. Army Europe. With no assigned forces, U.S. Army Africa often links assets from U.S. Army commands with important missions on the continent, said Lt. Col. Don DeMetz, CJTF-HOA's liaison officer to U.S. Army Africa.
“The effort shows how Army service component commands can assist one another,” DeMetz said.
The first course teaches Soldiers how to effectively plan, prepare and present training and education. Soldiers took part in group discussions. The second course explains the small group instruction process, team building and the leader’s role as a facilitator.
The Soldiers who underwent the courses are now better equipped to complete missions in Horn of Africa and beyond, said Sgt. Ricardo Palacios, a 1-65th noncommissioned officer.
“The training courses were a great opportunity that I didn’t expect,” Palacios said. “I know the training I received will be very useful in my career.”

The weekend offered, once again, some extreme weather. Where I live, it was thankfully warm enough for it to rain in the valleys, for 1 1/2 days full blast!
This depends on the altitude of course, the mountains got snow right aways (1m+). Then temperatures droped everywhere, but the amount of snow that was still to come was not that large, fortunately (otherwise, when the snow freezes onto the trees, they are likely to break under the load). Interestingly it cleared up right on the next day, so I had to do a winter photo safari.
It was already afternoon and I attempted to do a telephoto pano on a mountain ridge, but it was covered up by clouds. Normally, I would have waited (cause these clouds come and go like within a minute), but I had another project in mind for a while, and headed back in the opposite direction, away from the setting sun.
Until I noticed the magic of the moment, plowing through pristine powder with this gorgeous golden light illuminating it at every step, in combination with these blue-ish shadows in the textured surface created by the wind. And there is some glitter too. ✨
So then, before I knew it I was aimlessly running through the snow (such a simple pleasure, hope nobody saw me though), creating these golden clouds with my feet, leaving the most random tracks, ..and this kind of snapshot emerged out of it. ☺️
A winter landscape in this flat golden sunset light, is just a thing of beauty, the snow wears it like a dress, adding these blue shadows to it, such a wonderful contrast. Looking at photos, I totally forget the "freezing my a** off part*. 😋
