Week 27: Something that looks like a letter of the Alphabet.

First Place winner for the weekly theme.

Icon of the Month for 52 of 2011.

I had a lot of fun with this theme and I have carried on with it. I have worked backwards from here and have taken each letter of the alphabet in a similar macro form. There are already a few more in my stream, and the collage is below. Stay tuned for the rest of the individual shots.

A street in Alicante, Spain, on the Mediterranean coast. Alicante seemed, in 2012, a safe place, although the Spanish had their own horrific terror incident in 2004, with the bombing of Atocha Station in central Madrid. Since then, numerous terror incidents have occurred, with the latest being in Beirut and Paris, and don't forget the Russian passenger jet.

The poet's advice—In Cities, Be Alert—stands to reason for nearly any citizen of the world, including Nigerian villages. Terrorism is global, and seems to have few boundaries. Staying alert is about all any one person can do. Caution and prudence are the watchwords of the day. But shall we allow our fear to control who we are? I hope not.

Remember: all around you is pure city;

try to stay alert . . . .

Too bad we aren't all as smart as our dogs. Actually, we were almost this smart. We kept it simple this year: minimum fuss, minimum mess, maximum relax. I even, for he first time this year, sat down and watched a football game, though maybe I shouldn't have because I may have jinked the 49ers and caused them to break their eight-game winning streak. Obviously, our son's dog Sage couldn't have cared less.

3/7/10: Theme: Toys.

This may look like a battered old piece of junk, but my parents gave this to me over 60 years ago and is the first toy I remember. It was made in Sweden. It is the only toy I have from my early childhood, and is, therefore, very precious to me. I love every chip on it. My grandson now enjoys it when he visits.

I am new to this group. I have had a strobe for some time, and never used it. This is my first attempt. I hope to learn how to do it properly in this group

Untaxed since December 2014. The interior of this was full of scrap car parts such as brake discs, which is probably contributing to the stance along with a presumably empty engine bay.

Sheffield, over the past couple of years, appears to have become a bit of a bus spotting hub with the new First liveries and the various goings on with Hulleys and TM Travel. I haven't been in ages, although it does appear that I did Sheffield spotting 'before it was cool' in the mid 2010s. You won't find it like this now, but typical of the time, here's First Renown 60697 following Stagecoach 15710, with its old route 88 branded livery and "is on this bus" rear text. Beyond that is one of the ex-Yorkshire Traction East Lancs bodied Volvo B7TLs in a similar livery to the Scania but for the 87. I really liked those branded liveries Stagecoach had in Sheffield.

I thought for this Christmas I'd share some of the Sheffield pictures that are a mix of improved reuploads, or stuff that didn't seem worth uploading at the time but on retrospect is worth it. The majority of these are from five years ago yesterday, but to me still feels like only a couple of years ago, when I spent the 23rd of December 2016 in and around Sheffield Interchange, looking for an elusive Volvo Olympian that never showed up... until a year later.

Thank you in advance for your views, comments, and faves. They are much appreciated!

This good luck pendant was given to my wife, Sammy, in 1940 by her aunt in Stuttgart, Germany, during their harrowing escape from Estonia, which had been taken over by the Communists (her father was a diplomat from that country, and if he hadn't escaped, he'd have certainly been sent to Siberia) . Five years ago, she uncovered it and has been wearing it constantly ever since.

Without question, this pendant has been the most frustrating object I have ever tried to photograph, and I've tried on several occasions. This image makes it look like it went through WWII on the treads of a Sherman tank, and yet, in reality, there are no scratches or blemishes on it. There is also no division of color around the edges. It is a smooth, like-new gold pendant, and this is really a horrible representation of it. I took a number of shots of it and lit it from several different angles, which resulted in glare in various locations on the pendant, which I got rid of by layering one image on top of the other and erasing away the offending glare from the top layer. But the scratches and the harsh transition around the edges are frustrating, to say the least. I'm sure if I had a light box and some means of softer lighting, the results would have been better, but there are still those non-existent scratches and that color separation that appears in every image I've ever taken.
