Only a short window of opportunity for a photo today (Saturday), so I took it in the window. Basil plant that grows in a pot on the windowsill with a plastic sheet stuck to the window itself.

A boat being launched from the repair yard. This is my shot for today 6/31 for the October picture a day group.

16 October.... Bit short on time today. I snapped this on my way back to the office. Extremely bright so I had to employ some high dynamic range tricks. I also didn't set the camera up quite as I normally would, so it's not up to my usual HDR standard!

I've never made a cupcake in my life and wasn't going to start today so what I've done is adapt a butterfly cake recipe. They're gaudy, probably very sweet and full of "E" numbers, but I'm sure the children will love them tomorrow.

I have a hire lens which arrived today, the Canon 17-55mm F/2.8 IS USM so this photo was taken with that.

Also using for 114 Pictures in 2014 Project, No. 13 Scary.

Went to Shugborough Hall today in Shropshire. This is the former home of Lord Litchfield (deceased), royal photographer. Lots to see and do there, and it was great to see many of his photographs that adorned the walls of his former private quarters in the hall.

There are many different room and shop settings there too, and there was one full of these old puppets. Quite spooky they are too. Well it was either this or the baby piglets born yesterday.

I get a pair of Halloween socks each year, it's a tradition that has been going on for years and years. All these socks are clean, but as you can see, the older ones are pretty worn, as these things go.

9 October, Pyracantha on my shed. It was a beautiful sunny day at first, so I took a couple of banker shots. It then turned dull followed by rain and I got too busy to better this one.

My (ongoing) experience after being spiked by a blackthorn a few days ago while picking sloes means I'm not getting too close this this one either.

A day at Twycross Zoo today in Leicestershire. This chimp is injured (a tiff with other chimps I believe), and is under the care of the vet. The one in the background was being so attentive; it was really touching.

I thought I'd try my hand at oil & water today ... it's harder than it looks!!!

I got a few that I liked and I introduced marbles into the equation later which gave an interesting extra layer of abstraction.

However, quite early on I took this shot and whilst I didn't notice the silhouette of a man at the time it jumped straight out at me on the computer and picked itself.

I can spend forever photographing insects and in fact did this afternoon. It was a dull, miserable day and there was only the one fly, and he was very patient with me. It was a relief when he finally flew away and I could stop. But wait! There's another one, and this time more interesting as he's blowing bubbles. It's a shame it was so dull and I couldn't get a greater DOF, but I'm quite pleased with the reflection of the Sedum plant in the bubble, especially as it was a very small fly and an even smaller bubble.

Insects are one of my favourite subjects and I'm surprised I've got to the 5th of October before I've done one.

Accompanied by my friend, I went to capture a shot for my Through The Year project, intending to use it also for October picture a day, but I kind of like this one of my friend, a keen iPad photographer, with the setting sun reflected on her tablet.

Today I've been for a day of pampering with a friend at Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire. By pampering I mean I've been in the Thermal Spa, had a swim, a facial, a back massage and a Dead Sea Mud wrap. Lovely relaxing day interspersed with wonderful food, cups of tea and a wee glass of red.

This is one of my prized possessions. I've owned it for at least 29 years and if you look closely you can see my name and class written on the Rawlings label. That was from when I took it into school in the first year of secondary school (Year 7 for the younger audience!). It was a gift from my Aunty Ann in Los Angeles. I have the ball and Louiseville Slugger bat somewhere in the house too!

I saw this sunflower in bloom with the lovely reds of an autumnal Virginia Creeper behind it.

The sunflower was in full sun whilst the background was in the shade so a 'fake' HDR process helped to bring out all of the colours.

Taking the case literally in this instance. Not much time today so a quick still life shot with my phone.

I know this won't be to everyone's taste but I quite liked the effect. The image is a macro of coloured headed pins. I then used a texture layer to add the scratched look.

These tiny mushrooms / toadstools were growing on our lawn. This was taken with the 50mm and macro attachment.

Strange to see a rabbit on the St Rose Hospital grounds in Henderson. It was not easily frightened, let me take his photo, then returned to nibbling on the grass. Taken with a Lensbaby Double Glass2 lens.
