Thanks to everyone who stopped by our studio last night at "Final Fridays on the Square" in Nelsonville. This months theme was "Fire & Ice" so we were giving out free pics to anyone representing the theme...swimsuits or snowsuits, fire or ice!

The cold temps. only brought out ice...and we love this one of Ben and his lovely friend.

I owe my friend Mark for this one as he found a superb location on Thursley Common with a twisting wooden boardwalk through some trees. As a special bonus the trees have a very nicely textured bark.

What better than to place Rachel just there and bathe her in glowing warm dawn sunlight. Actually it was dawn, but the sun wasn't playing so this is lit with a large octabox triggered with Pocket Wizards.

Also, it was cold, about 1C, so big thanks to all three of the dancers who braved the elements in bare feet on the frost covered planking.

[Now that our visit of the ruined priory church of Colchester is over, and before I resume uploading photos from our Christmas 2024 and New Year’s 2025 trip to England, let us take a break and come briefly back to France to document the successful completion of an impressive restoration work I was happy to be part of, photographically speaking.]

The Gates of Paradise, so dubbed by Michelangelo himself, are monumental bronze doors that give access into the Saint John baptistry, which stands in front of the Santa Maria del Fiore “duomo” cathedral in Florence, Italy. Those massive doors, 5.10 meters tall by 3.20 meters wide, are a masterpiece of Renaissance art sculpted mostly by Lorenzo Ghiberti around 1442. Further to the devastating flood of River Arno in 1966, the orignal doors were taken away and stored in the safety of a nearby museum, to be replaced on-site by copies.

A Wikipedia notice in French can be found here: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porte_du_Paradis (doesn’t seem to exist in English).

In 1841, the City of Lyon, at the behest of a then-well known Lyonnais painter, Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796–1860), ordered a casting of the portal to be made by the Museum of Fine Arts of Paris. The cast was installed in the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon, in the Palais Saint-Pierre (Saint Peter’s Palace), thus named because the building in which it is is what remains of the former abbey of Saint-Pierre-les-Nonnains, founded in the 9th century for Benedictine nuns.

In 1936, the cast was taken down, disassembled and subsequently broken down into more than one hundred pieces as its fragile self was not-so-carefully moved from one temporary storage place to another. Acquired by the Musée des Moulages (Museum of Casts) of Lyon, the fragments were stored there for several decades. When it was decided to restore and reassemble them, the Fondation du Patrimoine, one of the non-profit heritage organizations I work for as a pro bono photographer, was called upon to provide the 50,000-euro financing, and I was asked to take photos, first of the pre-restoration fragments in their storage area in 2023, then of the Gates re-assembled, restored and put back up in the museum hall, in the only location where the ceiling is high enough to accommodate them, in March 2025.

To document this project, I will upload some “before” photos, as well as, of course, some “after” ones. You will note that, around 1910, a patina was applied onto the cast as it was meant to reproduce as faithfully as possible, not the shiny, golden aspect of the brand new bronze, but the faded one the Gates exhibited at the beginning of the 20th century. It is of course this faded aspect that the restoration sought to retrieve —quite successfully so, I must say.

Today was a day of many firsts, for both myself and the make up artist. I had never shot before using a MUA, nor had my MUA had a real shoot with a model other than herself. I can strongly recommend Sophie she was a great laugh easy going, and good at what she does.

So yesterday, I mentioned that I bought something.. (or at least I think I mentioned it). Here it is! I love LOVE Coach fragrances. It's not too strong, very light, but noticeable. Also, look at that depth of field! If you're considering on getting the 85mm f/1.8, GET IT. Totally worth it.

This is Chris AKA Trick65 ....I met Chris on Saturday at our little mini workshop/meet here at my studio. Chris is a cool cat and hails from the NYC, get him talking quick and he jumps right into that cool NYC accent! Chris is also an AMAZING graphic designer, he showed me some things and is allowing me to pick his brain anytime! He has designed some major campaigns for Disney animated movies such as "Wall-E", "Up", "Flushed Away", etc. He has designed things as well for movies such as "V for Vendetta", "Batman Begins", etc. He is a cool guy and has a love for animals, he has a great personality and I think I captured it very well in this portrait of him.

Enjoy,

Hector

Two light set-up -

1.) Elinchrom 600 Rx in large octabox directly behind subject and aimed slightly upward to decrease flair. This is a simple fix for those with no white seamless or two extra lights to light your white seamless...* see Scott Kelby's blog on how to do this.

2.) Elinchrom 600 Rx into beauty dish - boomed overhead and on camera axis.

3.) Reflector below subject for fill.

I did this shot to practive shooting white clothing on a white background while still holding detail in the clothing and not blowing anything out. It was a good learning experience.

Another shot from my Tuesday night shoot with my shooting partner, Les. (www.flickr.com/photos/zoomie2008/)

I am getting tired of shooting against a white backdrop and letting the light fall just short of it - resulting in a grey background, so I did some experimenting and blended Nicole onto a textured background. We used a blow dryer (set on warm) to blow the ribbons in her hair.

Thanks again, Nicole, for being so patient!
