One of the main objectives of the European Union is to promote economic, social and territorial cohesion between regions. The reformed EU Cohesion Policy 2014-2020 comes at a pivotal moment. Recent years of austerity have seen rising unemployment and widening inequality, especially in peripheral regions, with youth, women and ethnic minorities worst affected.

Making over €350 billion available to invest in Europe's regions, cities and the real economy, the reformed Cohesion Policy is the EU's principal investment tool to deliver the Europe 2020 goals: creating growth and jobs, tackling climate change and energy dependence, reducing poverty and social exclusion. Once member states’ national contributions and the leverage effect of financial instruments are taken into account, the impact is likely to be over €500 billion.

Launching a new partnership with the European Commission, with the participation of the OECD, Salzburg Global’s program is timed to help key stakeholders understand the rules and results-oriented focus of the reformed Cohesion Policy and ensure maximum impact for these investments. It will build on our longstanding European program which has featured over 15 sessions devoted to the EU’s development and expansion, grounded in our location at the crossroads of East and West.

The 2014 program will focus on ways in which regional development policy and complementary instruments can enhance competitiveness and effective governance at local, regional and transboundary levels.

Participants will examine tools for environmentally sustainable innovation, human capital development, creation and financing of SMEs and the transition to a low carbon economy. They will compare practical projects and mechanisms that have delivered successful outcomes for competitiveness and inclusive growth, in and beyond Europe, in order to identify transferable tools and connect stakeholders who are leading cutting-edge work around the world.

The program will be held from May 17 to May 22, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria, with a one day, high-level pre-session meeting on May 17-18, focusing on European competitiveness, the shift to low carbon economies, and the role of sustainable cities.

The major objective of our proposal is to give new life to this space. The best way is to bring the existing town (and well-consolidated) for this area.

One of the strategies, the most immediate, is to extend: 22nd Street, 23rd Street, 25th Street and Phipps Street. After that, and since the land is divided into three parts, the option was to use the central part to integrate a building that would serve as a memorial to what existed. This building is a museum bridge, all-glass, which stalks the city and recalls past memories of what Pruitt Igoe had better.

Thus, the implementation is exactly the same as the building that was there. On the other hand, laterally, we designed an orthogonal grid, with identical blocks and in which the logic of the building is always the same: the ground floor is intended to trade, all next three floors are for residential use and some of the blocks that are delimited by main avenues have another 3 or 4 floors of offices that are working day and night.

In contrast with all this metric, we created cubes mismatched with the same volume as the interior blocks.

With regard to materiality, the residential floors are made of brick, like the surrounding buildings. But, for the trading floors and offices are made of glass and concrete and mark the return of modernity to this site.

The highlight in the general idea is the union of the tallest buildings, achieved thanks to the remarkable building that connects with the Pruitt Igoe...NOW

It seems the only thing wrong with this relief map of Little Bighorn was that the audio commentary wasn't working.

F_m and I went out today with the objective of taking some fine (!) shots of a Swamp Harrier - this was as close as we got. Although we did see one on a number of occasions, its distant fly-pasts indicated a reluctance to appear on Flickr.

Objective 2: Creative Exposure

The camera mode (P, Tv, Av, M) and why I chose it: I used the camera mode M so that I could adjust the aperture and ISO.

F stop used and why: I used the f stop 5.6 to have a small aperture to create a small depth of field of the flower.

Shutter speed used and why: I used the shutter speed 1/60 so that I could capture the image with as little shake as possible and to avoid a blurry image.

ISO used and why: I used the ISO 100 so that it would let in more light.

Exposure compensation and why it was used: I used the auto exposure compensation to keep a natural light in the photo.

Focal length and why: I used the focal length 55.0 mm so that I could get a really close-up view of the flower.

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design

The elements of design demonstrated:

Line: This photo has diagonal and curved lines.

Space: This photo creates space with a negative background because it is plain, and you can't see anything else except the flower.

Form: This photo has form because of the shadows on the individual petals that give off a 3D effect.

Texture: This photo has texture because it is a macro shot, and makes the petals appear soft and smooth.

Objective 4: Lighting

Type of lighting and why: I used natural lighting for this photo. I used this type of lighting to create more dramatic shadows in between the petals to give a 3D look to it.

Objective 6: Critique

The focal point is the mountain, It draws the eye in. There is not really any negative space in this photograph, the black and white adds a night feeling like a relaxing setting. The lines included are converging, leading, horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Many sharp detail.

Digital Photo Project 1 Reflection

In this project, the objective was to practice shutter speed and aperture while creating creative images. I have learned how to better control the exposure and greater reduce blurry movement in my photos. I tried to make my photos have a reason; that was the hardest part for me. What helped me with this, was going to a more alive setting, like Hollywood. But once I got Hollywood, a new problem arose. In Hollywood, everyone is always moving, which creates a blurry image if you do not have a fast enough shutter speed, but I went at night so I needed more light. I tried to fix this with the aperture but everything is much harder to remember when you are trying to hurry and capture a good shot before it goes away. I will try fix this next time by bringing my chart with me,, and practice shooting in a more calm setting in the day first, then moving on to a harder scene after.

My favorite photos of this project are the ones of people. I enjoyed this the most because you could tell each person in the photo had a story; it is fun to make guesses about what kind of person they are from clues in the photo. With my shots of nature, while I think they are beautiful, they do not tell as much of a story. People radiant different energies that can completely control the mood of the photo. I also love seeing peoples’ reactions to some random teen taking a photo of them. They are either really happy or mad, but either reaction makes for a good photo.

The most upsetting part of this project was thinking I knew my favorite photo, then reviewing it on my computer and seeing it was nothing like I excepted, this happened to me far too many times. I think I still need more practice with perfecting my shutter speed and aperture. For my next project, I will try to pay closer attention to what my photos look like after each one I take so I have the opportunity to fix it instead of taking a bunch then realizing after none of them were good. I also dislike that my photos are not as defined as I wanted them to be and they are all pretty straight forward. I want to work on having a variety of different, more unique angles, or maybe even play with shadows more.

Capture the flag game. Danger lurks around every pallette.

Objective: Using size and off-center placement, try to emphasize the subject.

Critique: I think a boring shot [of the statues at the Korean War Veteran's monument in Washington, DC]. Not really sure what I would've done to improve this shot other than try to find a more interesting subject.

“One Shape Theme and Two Personalities”

The learning objectives of this project were to experience controlling space/form dynamic via structural units (linear, planar, and mass), to learn to work with shape as a focus of interest in a design, and to experience applying basic design principles in three dimensions.

This volumetric wall form was designed to serve as a room divider in a restaurant with a design theme based on the visual element of shape. Parts of the wall form are read as space dominant while others are seen as being mass dominant. Constructed from finished wood, this functional piece plays with a chevron motif.
