One of the main objectives of the European Union is to promote economic, social and territorial cohesion between regions. The reformed EU Cohesion Policy 2014-2020 comes at a pivotal moment. Recent years of austerity have seen rising unemployment and widening inequality, especially in peripheral regions, with youth, women and ethnic minorities worst affected.
Making over €350 billion available to invest in Europe's regions, cities and the real economy, the reformed Cohesion Policy is the EU's principal investment tool to deliver the Europe 2020 goals: creating growth and jobs, tackling climate change and energy dependence, reducing poverty and social exclusion. Once member states’ national contributions and the leverage effect of financial instruments are taken into account, the impact is likely to be over €500 billion.
Launching a new partnership with the European Commission, with the participation of the OECD, Salzburg Global’s program is timed to help key stakeholders understand the rules and results-oriented focus of the reformed Cohesion Policy and ensure maximum impact for these investments. It will build on our longstanding European program which has featured over 15 sessions devoted to the EU’s development and expansion, grounded in our location at the crossroads of East and West.
The 2014 program will focus on ways in which regional development policy and complementary instruments can enhance competitiveness and effective governance at local, regional and transboundary levels.
Participants will examine tools for environmentally sustainable innovation, human capital development, creation and financing of SMEs and the transition to a low carbon economy. They will compare practical projects and mechanisms that have delivered successful outcomes for competitiveness and inclusive growth, in and beyond Europe, in order to identify transferable tools and connect stakeholders who are leading cutting-edge work around the world.
The program will be held from May 17 to May 22, 2014 in Salzburg, Austria, with a one day, high-level pre-session meeting on May 17-18, focusing on European competitiveness, the shift to low carbon economies, and the role of sustainable cities.

When you reflect on how many people who run for office are born with a silver spoon in their mouth, it's truly amazing that 2 of the last 3 US Presidents came from humble beginnings. This is Bill Clinton's birthplace home in Hope, Arkansas, which is now a National Historic Monument. Clinton had a difficult childhood with an abusive stepfather who Bill fought to protect his mom from harm. That this kid would grow up to become a Rhodes scholar, graduate from Yale Law School, get elected to governor of his home state, then President of the United States, presiding over the largest economic expansion in US history, is unbelievable. On the other hand, as remarkable as that is, it is the very essence of the America, that people succeed based on their talents and hard work, and not by privilege handed to them at birth.
You can see in the background that someone drove a large vehicle into the steel fence of the Clinton National Historic Site, which will inevitably cost taxpayers thousands of dollars in vandalism repairs. Ironically, this person's "statement" seems to reflect more on the President's detractors than the intended target.
The prominent sign for Tea Party meetings is posted just outside the monument to honor of our 42nd President who was the first President since Calvin Coolidge to have a budget surplus in every year of a Presidential term. Despite Clinton's strong fiscal performance (a purported objective of the Tea Party), this organization does not appear to be a supporter of his policies. Their track record impacting GOP primaries is on a precision course to guarantee that Bill's spouse will win the Presidency in 2016.
Tip for visitors: don't ask the park rangers if this site has a National Park Service "Oral History".
Our main objective when driving Texas Route 66 between Shamrock and McLean was to find the "Exit Now, Rattlesnakes" sign. Unfortunately, the sign was taken down by high winds in the Spring of 2007. Nonetheless, Sara and I set out to find the twisted wreckage of the once iconic Mother Road landmark.
Talking to local residents, we learned the sign once directed Route 66 travelers to the Regal Reptile Ranch, one of many snake attractions all along Route 66. The last and final "Reptile Ranch" was located in a service station at the Lela Exit in northern Texas, near where this sign stood. We were then directed to a small city park surrounded by trailer homes, where we found what was left of the sign. The "EXIT NOW" part of the sign was so severely damaged by a storm that it was discarded, but the "RATTLESNAKES" portion was still in pretty good shape.

I was very lucky to get these two siblings for a miserable sum in late 70's or early 80's for my Canon FT(b) cameras. The only problem was that I could not afford the amount slide film needed for a single acceptable photo:-(
Maybe during this summer I have possibilities to start using them with a digital camera body.
The objective of the LUX Prize (light) is to illuminate the public debate on European integration and to facilitate the diffusion of European films in the European Union. The LUX Prize will finance the subtitling and the kinescope recording of the winning film in the 23 official EU languages. The original language recording will be adapted for sub-titling for hard of hearing and deaf people.

This "SP-level" zoom tube doesn't belong to the lot I described early but is a former Tamron Adaptall purchase.
The rear end has in this photo its 'original' adapter marked 'K/R'. What cameras these are - I don't know.
I'll release some sample photos shot with this objective - before CLA, which is evidently needed.
This photo is the last one in the present 'Tamron tubes' series. So - if you feel your mission and/or passion is commenting the la(te)st photos only - feel free to start your verbal engine(s) now..
Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Frustration
It's bad enough to be stuck in a day-long training. But when you find out that you're stuck in a day long training for something you'll never do, that's even more frustrating... Thankfully, we have substance abuse to help us cope with life's frustrations.
WIT: Went with a small depth of field to convey that there's a reason the bottle isn't full, and perhaps to give a feeling of all that frustratingly useless training blurring into a mass of stuff to be forgotten.

The objective for this image was to show the mucilaginous layer which covers the filament. It is evident at the center in the septum bridging the gap between the two cell end walls. It appears as a halo. This is what makes the material feel slimy.

Every day, in the course of normal corporate advertising and personal communications, people are reminded which groups are "underrepresented," "lacking" or "falling behind." Aspiring candidates are subjected to reminders of performance problems or perceived gaps between the genders and which group is "dominating" them. Motivated by the inequities they see around them and driven by the desire to "combat them," academicians use crude racial and gender substitutes of underrepresented minority (URM) and non-URM.

Why is society still referring to women as a minority group?
I really like these, they're pretty close to the quality of the made-in-Nottingham stuff although the treasure chest joins will need some clean-up.

MSET works by relaying sensor target inputs to a vehicle-mounted command-and-control and fire-control system. That system determines grid coordinates, generates flight paths and launches the appropriate number of missiles. Those missiles are guided via real-time waypoint updates to the target location, and image processors on the missile provide positive identification, target lock-on and track to terminal.
