Project Summary

Objective

To improve air quality in the Philippine city of Vigan by selling a cost-effective retrofit that significantly reduces two-stroke engine pollution.

Rationale

Though it kills 3–6 million each year, air pollution is not always recognized for its pervasive role in poor health, poverty, and economic stagnation in developing countries. A major source of air pollution is two-stroke engines, which power 100 million vehicles across Southeast Asia -- each producing the pollution of 50 automobiles. Localized bans fail to remove two-strokes from the larger market. As in many of the region’s cities, the health of Vigan’s residents is under siege by air pollution. The city’s air quality problems can be traced to its 3000+ two-stroke taxis.

Innovation / Effectiveness

Envirofit has developed a two-stroke retrofit that significantly improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. We have engaged in field testing and awareness building in the Philippines and are now selling our retrofit to taxi drivers in Vigan, with the city government offering micro-loans to spur adoption. Fuel and oil savings result in an immediate payback - the retrofit pays for itself within a year. Envirofit’s goal now is to pursue full-scale market development with the objective of retrofitting Vigan’s entire fleet of two-stroke taxis within three years. Secondarily, we are pursuing capacity development to train local maintenance centers and increase local sourcing of retrofit components. Upon completion, our project will result annually in the removal of 127,000 automobile equivalents of pollution and the infusion of $1.1M into the local economy.

The objective of the 2019 Adebayo Adedeji Memorial Lecture, therefore,,is to raise issues that will help policymakers to

disentangle the hype from reality in order for them to make evidence-based and reality-informed policy choices and decisions. The Lecture will interrogate ideas, identify action areas, and propose tangible suggestions for debate and consideration by policymakers. It will help to increase awareness among African policymakers of the promise and perils of the digital economy and promote high level dialogue on these issues.

This is the origional bridge taken by the Glider troops, a new Bridge of similer design stands near to where the bridge stood, but the modern one is a lot wider...

This is a color version of nothing more than a happy accident. I liked the orange and red tones, contrasted with the white circles. I I happened to catch this reflection in of all things a soup bowl. You will notice inside the circle are actually reflections of branches outside. They bounced off a lantern on my countertop through a colander into the bowl of soup, left to soak. I thought it looked so interesting and could not pass up putting it on here.

Objective 3: Composition Techniques

1. Rule of Thirds: In this photo, the main focal point is the pine cone which is in the lower left corner of the photo. The pinecone, which is situated where the horizontal and vertical thirds of the photo meet, keeps the attention of the photo where the eye naturally goes. It would be equally effective if the pinecone was in the upper left, upper right, or lower right areas of the photo. People naturally look at these areas, making it the best place for the focal point.

2. Perspective and depth: A different perspective makes photos much more interesting to look at. This photo demonstrates a different perspective, as it was taken at ground level, and looks at birch bark from a much different angle than what is normally seen. This photo also demonstrates depth because of the different depths in the birch bark, grass and background. Both of these features make the photo much more interesting to look at.

4. Backgrounds: It is important to have consistent backgrounds in a photo. A uniform background keeps the attention on the focal point of the photo. This is demonstrated in this photo because the background is blurred, and consistent. There is nothing big or distracting in the background to take away from the photo. The colours are relatively uniform, and there is nothing drastically different.

7. Texture: Texture is another level of detail in a photo to hold the viewer’s attention. In this photo, Texture comes from the ground, in the grass, and on the birch bark. These textures make the photo much more interesting and detailed to look at, while still keeping attention in the right spot, making it more pleasing to look at.

8. Framing: Framing the subject of a photo within something else in the photo makes the subject stand out, and hold our attention. In this photo, the birch bark is framing the pinecone, which helps it to stand out and hold attention. It fills up unused space in the photo, and is interesting to look at, but still brings the attention back to the focal point. The dark colour of the birch bark also helps re-focus and hold attention on the pine cone, and keeps your eye looking in one place.

10. Diagonals: There is a natural and very light diagonal in the lower right corner following the edge of the birch bark up to the pinecone. Diagonals allow the eye to travel through the photo. In this example, the diagonal is effective because it leads to the main focal point of the photo, the pinecone, while still helping you to look at areas of the photo.

Objective 4: Lighting

This photo demonstrates side lighting, which creates shadows and bright spots in the photo. It is semi- diffused. Semi diffused light gives some brightness and highlights, with minimal washing-out of the colours.

Objective 5: Post Production

This photo was sharpened, had contrast added, and was resized. I also added a very small amount of saturation, to bring out the colours a little bit more.

Objective 6: Critique

Strength: I like how this photo is framed. The birch bark as a frame keeps the attention centered on the pine cone, but also adds details and depth. It makes the photo much more interesting, but isn’t distracting.

Area for growth: To improve this photo, I would get rid of the blue in the background, because I find it too bright, and out of place.

Photo #1

Objective 3: Composition Techniques

Perspective and depth: shooting the plant straight on and zoomed in adds detail that the human eye normally wouldn’t pick up from standing above the plant.

Fill the Frame: The bush is the only thing in the photo and it takes up the whole space. This helps the photo because berries are naturally small and having other things around the plant would be easily distracting.

Backgrounds: Having the blurred leaves as the background adds warmth and unity to the photo without being distracting.

Leading Lines: The main branch leads from the bottom left corner to the top right causing the eye to flow through the entire picture easily and comfortably.

Texture: The wrinkles in the berries add interest for the eye and realism in the photo overall.

Colour: The warm tones in most of the leaves contrast with the darker, cooler tones of the berries making them stand out more. It also causes a bit of a darker mood rather than if the berries were bright and plump.

Objective 4: Lighting (side, back, soft, hard, fill)

Types of lighting and how they contribute to the image:

Soft: There are no harsh shadows and all the colours can be seen true to the natural colours

Side: There is a slight lightness coming from the right side of the photo where the sun was angled

Fill

Objective 5: Post Production (resize, contrast, sharpening, and others you have done)

Corrections/adjustments made:

I cropped the photo a little bit to get rid of some distracting features that didn’t fit with the picture.

I sharpened the photo

I added contrast to the photo to add more natural warmth

I used the healing brush to remove some berries that seemed out of place

Objective 6: Critique

Strength: I think the positioning of the branch was a very good choice. The colours complement each other very well.

Area for growth: If I could take this photo again I would probably use the lighting and focal length more to my advantage to give a little more dimension between the different parts of the plant.
