In the history of the Friends of the Kunsthalle too the seizure of power by the Nazis is a deep cut. The Nazi regime developed a practice of arts funding which was marked by the mandatory relationship of art and state.
The enforced conformity of friends meant the loss of independence and the orientation of the association's activities to the objectives of the National Socialist government. Decisive for this change of course, was the board meeting on 10 June 1933. The poet and art historian Wilhelm Niemeyer played the key role as the representative of the Militant League for German Culture (Kampfbund). The Kampfbund was a Nazi-oriented organization which represented a nationalist-racist concept of art. Although Niemeyer since 1927 no longer belonged to the board of the association, he participated against the resistance of Gustav Pauli and the other board members at the meeting to introduce a list of the Executive Board drawn up by the Kampfbund.
As a result of the meeting Pauli on the same day sent a list of candidates for the election of the new board of the Friends to the Kampfbund. This was his last official act for the Friends of the Kunsthalle. The new board then was no longer elected but appointed by the First Mayor Carl Vincent Krogmann and was completely re-assembled, with two exceptions.
New chairman became Hermann Maetzig who also headed the official business at the Kunsthalle from the beginning of October, Pauli in late September 1933 as director of the Kunsthalle was sent into retirement. On the part of the club members, there was no opposition against the replacement of the Board, they confirmed this one after a short debate on their general meeting on 31 October 1933.
The era Maetzig did not last long. Already in April 1934, he had to give up all offices for belonging to the Freemasons. His successor Wilhelm Freiherr Kleinschmit of Lengefeld remained until August 1937 executive director of the Kunsthalle and Chairman of Friends. In the action "degenerate art" to which the set up by Pauli collection of modern art in the summer of 1937 fell victim he did not participate. However, in the tenure of Kleinschmit fell the exclusion of Jewish club members. This marks the blackest chapters in the history of the club.
At the beginning of 1936, the Statute of friends was officially completed by an "Aryan paragraph". But already at the end of the fiscal year 1935, the Jewish members had been forced to leave the club. In September 1935, the new program of events was sent with a message of Kleinschmit. It was said there, the membership card will be issued only to those persons who signed a statement that they were "Aryans".
Alone in September and October 1935, 29 Jewish donors, so financially particularly committed members, had to leave the club. Among them are such famous names as Bleichröder, Budge or Warburg. In addition, there were also about 100 regular members who had been excluded. Against this background is hardly surprising that the number of members of the Friends in 1936 with 1,124 members reached a historic low.
The lecture program of friends during the Nazi period designed primarily Wilhelm Niemeyer, who was secretary of the association since August 1933. As already Pauli, he also succeeded to win a number of known German art historians. Speeches were held by university professors as Hans Jantzen, Hans Kauffmann or the befriended with Niemeyer, Wilhelm Pinder. Although the Kunsthalle was closed at the beginning of World War II to the public, the friends continued to offer lectures. Those ones, however, unlike as in the days of the Weimar Republic, as regards contents offered only little direct references to the collection fund of the Kunsthalle.

Objective 2: Creative Exposure
The camera mode: Av because I could lower the shutter speed to 30 seconds by changing the aperture.
f stop used: f22
shutter speed used: 30 seconds so I had enough time to “paint”
ISO used: 100 to increase the quality of the picture
Exposure compensation: none
Focal length: 18mm because it was inside of a room
Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
Unity: The monochromatic color scheme unifies the picture and draws you eye to the center of the picture while removing clutter at the same time.
Contrast: The bright light of the “painted” word contrasts against the black background and creates interest.
Balance: The contrast between the “painted” word and the black background prevents the word, or the background from becoming heavier than the other. The lens flare also lightens up the background as well.
Movement: The implied movement of the strokes of the word makes your eye travel across the picture and when the line loops back at the end it brings your eye back to the center of the picture.
Emphasis: The contrast between the “painted” word and the background emphasises the word and draws your eye towards it.
Value: The monochromatic color scheme turns the whole picture into a scale of values using a rose color as its base.
Texture: The different streaks and thicknesses of the light “painting” creates a texture that is smooth and has its own sense of luminescence because it was drawn from behind using a flashlight. The lens flares and rose color makes the picture feel softer as well.
Color: The color scheme is a monochromatic rose color that simplifies the picture to the bare minimum and gets rid of distractions.
Space: this picture used negative space and positive space. The “painted” word is positive space that stands out against the background and is the center of interest. The black background is the negative space that recedes from the eye, while all of the lens flare in the picture almost starts to blend the negative and positive spaces together.
Shape: The flat aspects of the “painted” word makes this picture 2D along with the shallow depth of field this picture has.
Form: Where the “painted” word recedes from the eye because there is less light it makes the picture look 3D along with the “backlighting” of the lens flare.
Line: this picture has lots of line. All of the streaks of light in the “painted” word are made up of line along with the word itself. The word, since it was done in handwriting is a leading line that starts at the beginning of the L and ends in the back on the left side of the picture at the end of the underline so it’s a small jump for your eye to get back to the beginning of the L.
Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)
Corrections/adjustments made:
Temperature
Tint
Exposure
Highlights
Shadows
Whites
Sharpening
Noise reduction/luminance
Objective 6: Critique
I hate the way the e turns into the underline. I think if I did it over again I’d make that curve more gradual instead of that sharp point. I also dislike that yellow pair of streaks at the bottom of the picture. I think that they’re lens flares so if I did the picture over again I’d try to prevent those.
Objective 7: Photographic Styles (ex. portrait, landscape, etc.) – Explain why the settings and composition are appropriate for the style of photography
Type/style of photography: Light Painting
The mode was in Av because I’m most comfortable with that mode and the aperture is f/22 because I needed to slow down the shutter speed considerably. The shutter speed in 30 seconds because I needed enough time to “paint” the word love.

Objective 3: Elements and Principles of Design
The principles of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Balance- The dark part of the picture where the buildings are balances out the very interesting sky. If the buildings were brighter and you could see their features more then it would be distracting to the sky which is the main focal part of the picture.
The elements of design demonstrated (describe the use):
Shape- The dark shadows merges some of the buildings in the picture into what seems like one shape instead of multiple different ones. This creates a 2d look rather than 3d. The shapes of the building are also emphasized because they are placed against a colourful background where as they are dark. The buildings are geometric shapes, where as the clouds are organic shapes that have no specific form.
Space- The negative space in the picture is the dark shadows where the buildings are and this draws attention to the positive space which is the very colourful sky in the top 2/3 of the picture.
Objective 4: Lighting
Type of lighting and why:
Objective 5: Post Production (ex. dust/spot removal, resize, contrast, white balance, sharpening, borders, etc.)
Corrections/adjustments made AND/OR techniques applied:
Reduced the noise so that the picture would not look as grainy
Brightened and Increased Saturation of colours in sky to make stand out
Adjusted tone curve to darken shadows
Checked whites and blacks to make sure none in the photo
Added a vignette to darken sides of the picture and add focus to the middle

As we know one of the objectives of this particular PAD gallery is to find something to say about the day. So what does this shot tell us about today?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Nor is there any particular artistry in the shot.
I just thought that it was a very cool looking ship.
Not, of course, that you would get me on it at gunpoint, but very cool nonetheless. And indeed with the cruising prices on this particular ship, it's not likely that I'd accidentally sail on her.
The Seabourn Odyssey, owned by the Yachts of Seabourn company, is on her maiden voyage which commenced in Venice last June and is due to end in Greece in April. Hardly one of the largest ships around (198 metres long, 25 metres wide, 32,000 tonnes gross, 11 decks and a speed of only 19 knots but given what you pay you'll probably want to savour every minute anyway), her owners claim that the $USD300 million ship is one of the most luxurious. 450 passengers are served by 335 crew, and it's claimed that she offers more space per guest than any other ship in the cruise industry.
Oh, the price? A minimum of $USD53,745 ($AUD59,643) for the round the world voyage with the top suites costing about $1K per night per person.
(I think I'd rather buy my own extended range F/A18 and fly myself there, thanks; although F/A18's don't have 2 level, 1060 square metre spas on board.)
-----
Edit August 2023: I neglected to mention the loyal fuel tender Amorena berthed alongside. However there is another interesting fact about this. The Seabourn Odyssey is berthed on the near end of Darling Harbour. This is an area which once held working commercial docks. It was (and should still be) called The Hungry Mile because in the days of the Great Depression men would queue up there in the hope of a day's back breaking work for a pittance. And if you were injured, "tough luck, Charlie". The commercial usage had ceased by the 60s or 70s but the wharves were still used by smaller cruise ships. This shot would have been when that usage was coming to an end, before the area was redeveloped as the Barangaroo office and apartment zone, the development of which is partly documented in some of my galleries (albums) from the mid 2010s.
-----
Edit, May 2025: Seabourn Odyssey's parent operator was at the time Seabourne Cruise Line, which naturally specialised in luxury voyaging. The line had been established in 1986 by private investors in Norway. However by 2001 the line was a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corporation because, sigh, of course it bloody was, what isn't?
Seabourn Odyssey was the first of three ships that the operator ordered from Genova's T. Mariotti shipyard in 2006, with her starting service in 2009, a mere year before this shot.
In March 2023 she was sold to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. She finished off her existing cruises in August 2024, and was renamed Mitsui Ocean Fuji. Her scheduled itinerary out to June 2026 looks very different to what they had been as Seabourn Odyssey. She's only doing cruises starting and ending in Japan and out to destinations like South Korea, Taiwan and (rarely) Hawaii.
With soaking wet boots and a desire to drink beer, we made our way out of Cascade Canyon, and began the trek back to our campsite (almost directly across the lake in this shot) without the help of the ferry this time!
