RKO_3803. How extraordinary is it to watch these beautiful and colorful little birds doing their diving act!

This male Common Kingfisher achieved its goal and had a wonderful, though relatively small, meal!

It was a challenge (and objective) to get some nice shots of the diving Kingfisher and I guess I too achieved my objectives.

Finally I got around to process and upload another one from the epic Easter photowalk with m_laRs_k and magrit k.. It's another view of Shell-Haus (Shell House) in Berlin's Tiergarten district. The unusual cascade-like building was designed by German architect and professor Emil Fahrenkamp (1885-1966). It was opened in 1932 as a Berlin branch of the Hamburg-based oil company Rhenania-Ossag Mineralölwerke which was acquired by Shell plc in 1947 as "Deutsche Shell AG". Heritage-protected Shell-Haus is a 2.700 m²/29062,56 sq ft steel frame construction designed in the style of New Objectivity. For more general info on Shell-Haus and its tenants over the years, please check my album or Wikipedia (STRG/CTRL+ de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell-Haus).

The image is a true HDR made of three images. As usual, I've combined the photos in HDR Efex. More Sunday sliding was done in Color Efex ("Brilliance" and Warmth" and "Reflector Efex - silver"), Luminar Neo, and Topaz Photo AI.

Happy Sliders Sunday Everyone, and have a great summer/autumn week ahead!

A photographic movement in response to the emotional dramatic styles of photography in the 1920's; offered a return to unsentimental reality and a focus on the objective world, as opposed to the more abstract, romantic, or idealistic tendencies of photography.

Visional style through the exact representation of the subject, a clear and well defined image construction with particular attention to shapes and structures.

“Although you may not be able to physically rewind your experiences, a visual rewind may reveal aspects which you may have missed the first time around. By mentally rewinding scenarios for your life, relationships, experiences, and behavior, you can look back with focused attention to see things more objectively.” ― Susan C. Young

While landscapes are my primary photographic objective I pack 2 cameras in case I get lucky and see wildlife. This proud elk was standing in the Madison River while looking at his wandering herd who had wandered further downstream. Got lucky this day.

An elks impressive antlers draw a lot of attention, as they should....did you know:

"An elk’s antlers – which only grow on bulls – don’t just look cool. They’re made of fast-growing bone. How fast? Well, they’ve been known to grow as much as one inch in one day. This rapid pace has led some scientists to suggest that studying elk’s antlers might give us some help in the fight against certain types of cancer in humans. The size of an elk’s antlers depends on the amount of sunlight the elk gets; sunlight causes a boost in testosterone levels, causing the antlers to grow. They can weigh as much as 40 pounds in a full grown male." visitestespark.com

One of my objective for the Spring/Summer this year was to try to get a photo of a Rufous Hummingbird feeding on the wild flowering current. I believe that we have more Rufous than usual around Victoria this year. So this should have been an easy objective but, every time I saw the behavior I had no camera, not even a point and shoot . Now the current is practically finished flowering around here, so it was a nice compromise to catch this behavior on these wild roses while in Tofino. We have Anas Hummingbird all year round in Victoria but the Rufous' visit is something that we enjoy only from early Spring until August. A real sweet little bird to have around. Actually, I think these flowers are not roses but flowers of salmonberry shrub, but I am not an expert.

While my objective was to take a top view shot of these lovely roses , I noticed a few ants happily feeding themselves on these flowers.

See how many ants you can spot !

Looking back I should have used a tripod here, but I rode my motorbike this afternoon and I was just going to get something in our clubhouse.

Lesson learned: Never go on a trip without a tripod :-)

My attempt at the "Macro Mondays" theme "Treasured".

The Reichert "Neupolar 50 mm F 3.5" is a RMS objective for high magnification macro work and one of the rare lenses made in my home country Austria! It‘s relatively rare and therefore often somewhat expensive so I was glad to find one, and to me it feels like a little treasure I was able to find and return to it’s country of origin! I used its big brother, the 100 mm one to take this shot! Can't say when it was made exactly but it should be way over 50 years, realistically closer to 60 years old, so I'd say not bad for that age!

Shot with a Reichert "Neupolar 100 mm F 6.3" lens on a Canon EOS R5.

A macro view of electric hair clipper blades. The frame spans approximately 3mm across.

I was growing increasingly discontent with the haircuts I had been receiving. It had gotten to the point that I would come home after my hair appointments, pull out my shears, and touchup my hair to my liking. I finally made the decision to just cut my hair myself. That was twenty-five years ago; I have been cutting my own hair ever since. This is a macro view of the electric WAHL clippers I have been using since then.

Side note: The blurry line in the top blade had confounded me. It appeared in each of several alternate (yes–60+ focus stacked) shots. I surmise that it is from the oil lubrication on the blade.

Strobist/technical info:

The scene is a 64-image focus stack composite. It was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 speedlights, CL/CR, fired through 24" softboxes in Manual mode @ ⅛ power and triggered by PocketWizard Plus Xs.

The "objective" shot of a week in Utah also became the nemesis shot, that being the Gordon Creek Trestle. Took until 6:00 PM of the last day on the Utah to finally nail it down, with the lighting the way we really wanted it. Part of the challenge was getting to it on dirt roads, not all trains going over it, and the silent approach. Not only wasn't there much radio chatter, but trains dropped downhill here, and you wouldn't know it was near until it rounded that distant curve. But after several other shots at this bridge, I'm thinking this one finally nailed it as a fitting end to our week on the Utah Railway.

...of a commonly subjective inner feeling.

This tributary crossing serves as a significant landmark leading to the side trails of Rich Falls, Big Falls and Dome Falls. On this day, my objective was to reach Rich Falls. According to the research info I had, the trail should have been 10 to 15 minutes past this crossing on the left. Well...I walked 10 to 15 minutes and didn't see a trail. I kept going. As a matter of fact, I kept going to a place on the trail where I could hear Big Falls raging and "raising a ruckus" like you wouldn't believe in the gorge below. I turned around to backtrack hoping to see the trail and instead ended back up at the tributary again with no results. Knowing full well how dangerous the descents down into the gorge are after this point and to avoid attempting a bushwhack (let wisdom prevail), so I headed back across the tributary. Not long afterwards I encountered Charlie, an experienced hiker on the trail who was on his way to Big Falls. I explained about not being able to locate either trailhead, and he obliged to lead me right to where the trail to Rich Falls began. We ultimately reached the trailhead, about 30 minutes after the tributary crossing which was rarely used and was hidden underneath the fallen leaves. Charlie spoke about some of the steep sections of the trail, and I thanked him for the info and assured him I would be fine after I had started. After sharing some friendly parting words, he headed off towards Big Falls and I headed down the trail to my destination.

After two days of chasing UP 4014 (and other UP trains) dropping down to chase the Deseret Power was a worthy 2nd objective and despite some operational issues due to water problems we did luck out and get a train running. This was my favorite out of what we shot that day with the westbound loads about halfway between the mine and power plant. South of Dinosaur, CO 5/14/19

Bosnia and Herzegovina often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeast Europe, located within the Balkans. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bosnia is not entirely a landlocked country as it may appear on a map – to the south it has a narrow coast on the Adriatic Sea long and surrounds the town of Neum. Many people still associate the country with the break-up of Yugoslavia in the heartbreaking civil war of the 1990's. The scars from that time are all still visible. But today's tourist are likely to remember the country for its friendly, modest and warm people. The country has turned into an exciting and versatile travel destination, with beautiful mountains, numerous medieval castle ruins, seven major rivers, impressive waterfalls. Overall, nearly 50% of Bosnia is forested. A country where Eastern and Western civilizations have met over the centuries. Today integration into the European Union is one of the main political objectives of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The local currency is the Bosnian mark. The euro is also accepted. Islam is the majority faith in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism are all present. The wild and unspoilt nature makes it an ideal place for both adventurers and nature lovers. Mostar is the largest city in Hercegovina, with a small but thoroughly enchanting old town centre. Mostar has been most famous for this beautiful historic Ottoman-style Stari Most bridge, which spanned the Neretva river in what is considered the historic center of the city.

Mostar is situated on the Neretva River. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans (Turkish tribes) in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most visited landmarks. The bridge was destroyed during the Bosnian War. The European Union has spent more than $ 15 million on restoration. The restoration was finished in 2004. In 2005, UNESCO inscribed the Old Bridge and its closest vicinity onto the World Heritage List. Today it is the city’s crown jewel, a grand stone bridge which sweeps across the water, making it the most photographed landmark in the entire country for good reason.

After visiting the KB&S, I headed up to the Chicago, South Shore & South Bend, hoping to see their Halloween adaptation of the former Iowa Interstate units. I caught up with 804 leading a short westbound freight on CSX through the Miller Beach suburb of Gary, IN. Grab shot and attempted chase ensued, but they were hauling ass!

No lame paint patches here; In my opinion, this has to be one of the sharpest partial repaints I've ever seen.
