a bag of hazelnuts we bought in Chilliwack poses for a photo before being roasted in the oven tomorrow.
My attempt at the "Crazy Tuesday" theme "Looking Back on 2023", with another attempt at the Dec. 05th theme "Natural Textures/Structure".
Shot with a Schneider Kreuznach "D-Claron 40 mm F 3.5" lens on a Canon EOS R5.
Created for the LCoF "Nuts" theme I searched my stash of single nuts that I have saved "just in case" they were ever needed. I was struck with the idea that "Hex Nuts" were a sort of family so I sorted out several with the same "family characteristics" which I determined to be Hex shaped and chromed. I could have selected a "rusty" family or "brassy's" or "squares" or ... well I was just about out of time so selected what appeared the easiest path to Look Close Today.
Total width of this family portrait is 2". They are set up on a piece of orange construction paper hoping to get a color contrast and reflections. It was necessary to use a stack of 30 images to capture the textures and life history imprinted in the "faces" as well as the sharp edges of the working parts of the nuts.
Enjoy Looking Close on this Friday!
Another shot of those fat squirrels in London's parks :D We don't have squirrels like that in Vienna....

sold my Canon EOS 7d m2 and Canon EOS R last year as I decided that my Canon R6 would do both jobs I ask of my Canon kit, local landscape and big wave chasing. I used the 7d in combination with my EF100-400mm 4.5/5.6 L for the waves but in low light which usually coincided with stormy weather I couldn’t really push the photos passed 400iso, so I thought the R6 would fix that. Unfortunately I lost the focal length expecting a full frame to do the same job, even with the 1.4x extender attached it was unsatisfactory. So I ordered a R7 on the announcement of the release, three month later I cancelled that order as they was no sign of getting my hands on one. However in December they became available and I managed to get one. What with one thing or another this year I’ve not really been able to use the camera so to fix that I took it around my local park last week armed with the ultralight RF100-400 and some monkey nuts.
Bright sunshine through the big west-facing kitchen windows on the servery bench laden with nuts and fruit.

'Nuts ' wasn't quite my choice of vocabulary first thing this morning after I'd noticed the full moon setting behind the trees in a neighbouring street. Why? you might ask..... it was because after taking a 6 shots of varying focal length and 'protecting ' them on my camera with the intent of deleting the other 300 shots , in my haste, I went and formatted the card instead - thus losing every single shot. The result is this - a grab shot of a dish of Brazil Nuts on my sideboard :-)

Your power
In this shot, I have selected nuts, walnuts and almonds,
for the weekly challenge. I hope you like it. Overall shot is 6.2 cm wide by 4.3 cm high.
I wanted to represent with the theme of Billie Eilish, "Your power", the power of the nuts during their lifetime of use, as a metaphor.

Billie Eilish - Your Power (Official Music Video)
Sé que no elegimos cambiar
puede que no quieras perder tu poder
pero poseerlo es tan extraño,
..... Ella dijo que eras un héroe,
que hiciste el papel pero lo rompiste en un año.....
I know we don't choose to change
you may not want to lose your power
But owning it is so strange
..... She said you were a hero,
that you played the role but you tore it in a year .....
So che non scegliamo di cambiare
potresti non voler perdere il tuo potere
Ma possederlo è così strano
..... Ha detto che eri un eroe,
che hai interpretato il ruolo ma l'hai strappato in un anno .....

An eastern grey squirrel eating an acorn in the backyard Garry oak tree. Saanich, Vancouver Island, BC.
During the autumn and winter months, the eastern grey squirrel’s diet consists mainly of nuts and seeds. Throughout the year, tree squirrels store large quantities of seeds and nuts, especially acorns to see them through the winter months.
Tree squirrels are one of the most important animals for helping oaks spread, because they store acorns in the ground, helping to maintain and regenerate second-growth oak forests.
The bridges over the Leeds-Liverpool canal were built to last. As this rusty nut shows many, many years after its construction. HSS one and all.
