Dance Arts Los Alamos presents the Nutcracker - Duane Smith Auditorium

"According to German folklore, nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and protect your home. The legend says that a nutcracker represents power and strength and serves like a trusty watch dog guarding your family from evil spirits and danger. A fierce protector, the nutcracker bares its teeth to the evil spirits and serves as the traditional messenger of good luck and goodwill."

I wish you all a 😄 HaPpY CrAzY Tuesday 😄

and wonderful Christmas days.

Stay safe.

A little wooden German here. They are favored more so by the tourists than the German residents. I like them when tastefully painted and decorated ;)

This part in the show was demonstrating how the holidays are a great time to hang out with friends and family.

(More people who I need to tag)

Clara and the Nutcracker

This was my first pitch of my first route in Yosemite rocks. Emotioned and a little bit scared (not used to climb these clean granite cracks), I arrived at the belay, sitted as comfortable as I could, taking ropes and watching around, enjoying the moment until my friend Andrea ("the animal") appeared out of the crux of the pitch.

Day 343 of 366

Sorry for boring every one with all the Christmas themed shots since thanksgiving but it is the one holiday I really get into. Most of the other holidays to me end up being one or two day affairs. Typical it takes me a week or more to do all the decorating I like do. This year I just haven’t been in the mood to do it all like I normally do. This year is just the tree and a few things to sit out on the tables and such. No village no train. It just seems like too much work and not enough time. I am not even doing the tree like I normally do. Just some of my ornaments are going on the tree. I normally put several hundred on it maybe close to 1000 (well maybe not that many) and it ends up looking like a Hallmark store tree. I will tell you more about the tree when I show a picture of it.

Tonight is from my Nutcracker collection.

Here is a bit of trivia I found about them

Nutcrackers were especially popular with Germans who coined the phrase, “Gott gibt die Nü sse aber knaker mü ss man sie selbst (God gives the nuts but we have to crack them ourselves)”. This story was intended to teach children that life was hard but rewarding. This little verse made it a favorite toy, possibly because it enabled children to reach one of life’s rewards more easily.

According to German folklore, they were given as keepsakes to bring good luck to your family and protect your home. The legend says that they represents power and strength and serves like a trusty watch dog guarding your family from evil spirits and danger. A fierce protector, they bare their teeth to the evil spirits and serves as the traditional messenger of good luck and goodwill.

Nutcracker Races 2018

Poem by Liza Recto

‘Twas three days before Christmas, and unless you were knackered,

A near-perfect day for the yearly Nutcracker.

The intimate race that’s always convivial,

On this sunny day was especially familial,

With three tiers of Fagnanos, a gaggle of Rapps,

And the parent-child duos of Walser and Staats.

Three options were given: One mile, four, or 5K,

With views of the river and a glimpse of the bay.

The race crew included Don, Holly and Joe,

With Tami, as always, running the show.

The runners were off with a “Go!” and faint “moo,”

That from a red hippo, or pig or cow (?) blew.

Now dash away, dash away, dash away all!

Xander shot out like his swift Uncle Paul.

Three-year-old Xander, a fast little tyke,

Ran with mom Catherine, and grandfather Mike.

Leading the mile were Carlson Rapp and John Way,

(Okay, so I’m no Edna St. Vincent Millay!)

Tho’ he’d already logged ten toward the Idiot’s Half-thon

Perry took chase after Anna and John

With his characteristically laid-back demeanor

On the fast, flat 5K that went past the marina.

(I’ve bolded those syllables to highlight the meter,

Lest you think with the rhythm, I’m being a cheater.)

David “Luigi” tailed close - he was game.

On his heels was Dowgiallo of Lumpia Hustle fame.

Matt Stout was running just one minute faster

Than Michael and Dave, now Senior Grandmasters.

Suzanne ran a brisk twenty-two fifty-five

Three minutes ahead of Jay Wind. Sakes alive -

Jay was to run, the very next day.

An indoor track 40 plus 2.2K.

For those not in the know, that’s 26.2 miles,

AKA marathon, which takes more than a while.

Kate B. finished solo, between Jay and Char,

Followed by Amy, with Katie Edgar.

George Sisson broke thirty, a rather swift pace

With Jody Fagnano, a Masters Track ace.

Tamara and Ruth were running together

At a leisurely pace, just enjoying the weather,

With Kris right behind them, doing the MAF?

That method could help you excel at a half.

Then came Martin, and Irina Ostrovaya

But it wasn’t quite over– hold off the “Nazdrovia!”

Three runners ran four miles over puddles and chains:

Noah ran fleetly with no signs of strain,

While Debra and Liza took the occasion

To run at a pace that allowed conversation.

The clock was extinguished, there were results to compute,

While we nibbled on cookies, Chex Mix and fresh fruit.

The one-miler turned out to be too long by half,

But since everyone finished, no one minded the gaffe.

The finisher medal followed tradition

By featuring nuts, and this year’s edition

Was a clear plastic bell with a wee acorn clapper.

With a bright strand of yarn, it looked rather dapper.

Names were announced in order of finish

And the selection of prizes began to diminish.

There were ornaments, tchotchkes, and running apparel,

Even a book of marathon carols!

We posed for a photo and made a most festive scene

With some wearing antlers, or Christmasy green.

Again, the contingent of 50-Plussers was sparse.

Where were Karen and Bill, Jeanette, Kirk and Kars(ten)?

Oh right, Kirk was scheduled to run, like Jay,

The Hawk Indoor Marathon the following day.

Karsten had mentioned not being invited.

A needless formality, so he shouldn’t feel slighted.

Let’s drink a toast and raise cups of good cheer

To the family Graf and all volunteers!

We’ll be back in Twenty-Nineteen – no rebut!

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good nut!
