I thought these were the see through kind but they weren't. Either way, I'll find a reason to use them.

Note the upstanding mail collar, the large hanging sleeves of the houppelande and the early massive (visible! Which is very rare by this date) breastplate fastened by 'points' to Wilhelme's shoulders.

Wilhelme, who died in 1397, wears an interesting mixture of armour and late 14th century clothing. The large hanging sleeves are a typical example of civilian dress, covered by an early massive breastplate fastened by 'points' to his shoulders.

His wife Adilhe de Bierset died in 1379.

Winter just arrived at BCN, and I took some comfortable and warm pants I hadnt used in months, took a shower and put them on. Then I felt something in the pocket, and I found this.

Dear Santa,

How do reindeer fly? How do you get in a house without a chimny? I hope you give all the children their toys.

With best luck and wishes for Christmas Eve, Alex.

PS I miss you.

PPS Thank you.

This handwritten service log dates to the 1960s and contains the handwritten signatures of engineers who were maintaining the brewery's lift machinery several decades ago.

That was "Erving Goffman" and "Marshal McLuhan" Jay. ;)

And no this isn't my ad... although if you are a promisuous female...

My Death Note came without shoes. I contacted another DN owner here and her doll was without shoes also.

Dominatrix garb with a weird doll.... I guess I find the combination strange not the doll itself.

Things of beauty.

I often forget the small things that inspire me. One of them is old currency. I have a small collection. These are pre Bolshevik revolution Rubles. The further back you go in time, you can literally see why we call these things "bank notes". They literally used to be these huge notes from a bank saying "yeah, we agree to pay blah blah X amount".

The artistry and style that goes into these things is amazing. And even better, you can pick up these little bits of history really quite cheaply from a bunch of places.

Handmade paste paper cover.

Hand-bound notebook.

Illuminated Initial A.

Calligraphy.

Part of an old piano dumped in the vicinity of the seawall, Georgetown, Guyana, South America. You can see what I think are the tuner's markings in blue ink.

I don't do it deliberately, but every time I get a camera, the first shot is of one of my animals. George is usually the closest to me, so she got the honors with the GoPro Hero.

When I'm riding my motorcycle, I'm constantly wishing I had a camera implanted in my eyes. This is cheaper and safer.

There are several models, but I only bought the standard def entry model for several reasons. First: they had it at Costco and once I saw this thing in person I just wanted it right away. Didn't want to wait for shipping.

Mostly, though, there's one critical feature missing from the GoPro lineup that I'm going to wait for, and that's a radio remote. See...this takes still photos like a normal camera when you click the shutter, or you can take them in 2,5,10,30 or 60 second intervals. That's cool. But I want to have the option of just looking at something, hitting a remote button on my handlebar, and taking a photo when I want to take a photo.

Until then, I'm going to have loads of fun playing with this entry model. I will be attaching this to my dogs. Mark my words.

(Note: this camera does not allow you to travel through time. I don't know why it says it was shot in 1970. I'll try formatting the card...)

for thanks to say congratulations....

This is the final image in this series, and we end on a real low note: Bridgegate House (the building which North Ayrshire Council and Irvine Bay Regeneration Company are spending almost £9m on at the moment, with the sole object of making it even more ugly). If you look at the top left of the photo collage, you can see the architects' drawing of the view of the West side of the High Street. Now you don't need to be a design genius to see that, for the heart of a Scottish Medieval Burgh, there is something far wrong with this design: if you look at the older buildings on either side of BH, you will see they have all developed from pretty narrow plots (this is because the buildings are built on old field patterns, a system called 'riggs', unique to Scotland; these narrow fields were designed to ensure that good and bad soil were divided evenly between farmers). The result of this field division system is that old Scottish towns have a very distinctive 'rhythm' - the buildings may vary in height, but their width does not vary very dramatically (in the case of the King's Arms, this is obviously built across 2 riggs). The idea of 'street rhythm' is set out in the Academy of Imagineering's guide to looking at historic areas, 'Streetsight'; you can download this booklet for free by using the link given at the end of this article.

The High Street side of Bridgegate House is built over three double-rigg plots. The result of this is that the High Street has lost its former rhythm and it looks like someone has 'knocked out three front teeth '. If you look at the photo of the model (bottom right), you get some idea of how far BH is out of scale with the buildings on the South side of Bridgegate. In ai's Streetsight booklet this would be described as an 'overpowering contrast'; which is OK if the building is magnificent, like a fine cathedral, impressive town hall or wonderful theatre. However, nobody in their right mind would use the words 'fine', 'impressive' or 'wonderful' to describe Bridgegate House!

So we have seen, over the last seven weeks, how badly IDC got some things wrong (in the coming months, we will give due attention to what they got right, mainly from the period 1977-96, including some innovative and popular housing developments). It is a pity, with their current proposals for the town, that neither NAC nor Irvine Bay Regeneration Company appear to have learned anything from the mistakes of IDC's 1971 New Town Plan.

Some notes:

Lense: Standard 18-55- kit lense with 13 mm spacer ring. This spacer ring, from a set of three (13, 21,31, chinese product), is active and supports aperture control and autofocus (Amazon, approx. 100 Euro / set). In this application, this is not really necessary, because focussing is done best manually and aperture is fully opened most of the time.
