An image first uploaded 9 years ago and which has now been through the virtual darkroom once again for some up-to-date grain reduction work. The original upload has been deleted.

Exhaust fumes and leaking steam add to the atmosphere in the wee small hours of a cold winter's night at York station, as class 47 no. 47410 waits time with a rake of Mark 1 carriages on a down East Coast Mainline service.

The somewhat dodgy Zodel CDS Light Meter I was using at the time (a hand-me-down from my Dad) would likely have given me an indicative reading of 15 secs at F5.6.

But after factoring in the 1.6 stop adjustment of the 80B filter I was using for colour correction, then adding 50% for reciprocity failure (film reactivity being non-linear at low light levels), I got a final exposure of 23 seconds at F4-2.8. All a bit finger in the air but, with a couple of additional bracketed exposures, I generally managed to get a keeper.

As suggested above, the Zodel meter wasn't the most competent one on the block, but being familiar with its traits was a real help. In fact I see one is currently available on eBay for just £13 plus postage - perhaps an investment beckons for old times sake!

from my nightshift i saw a bright clear sky in the east with some thick clouds, hanging arround, before. Lucky me the traffic wasn't very busy so, after planning a location in my head during the trip, i arrived right on time. I forget my wide angle at home and after a grumphy moment about that i thought: let's try to shoot a panorama image with my 50mm. For this image i took 8 "portrait" images and stitched them into a TIFF file from 2+ gig. While processing the processor produced more noise as the hair dryer from my wife but it worked ;-)

When your hotel is so close it's easier to take pictures at every hour of the day. Over several days.

43137 sits on Inverness depot with 43129 to the rear at 04:30 in the morning. 43034 sits over its left shoulder. Oddly RTT has reported this set having left the depot at around 00:45 to form the 04:56 to Edinburgh, which it didn't as it worked a different set which I caught, a whole set on my own. It does however appear to have worked the previous days 1H19 1941 Edinburgh to Inverness.

Dear friends of photography, thank you very much for your visits, your faves, comments and group-awards!

I woke up at 2 a.m. this night. The last days I had the "Full Moon Desease“. The symptoms: Restleg legs, restless mind, always thinking about photography…;) It took me some time to grab the equipment, made breakfast at 2 a.m. and left the house at 3 a.m. Driving along the Lake Constance on the Swiss side to Konstanz. Visited the Ferry Harbour in Staad, later the Town Garden at the Lake with its wonderful monument of Peter Lenk. It was very dark in the air but my drone made a good job. The Mavic 3 Classic is good for low light photography, a bit better than my Mavic 2 Pro (also great). I took also some photos with my Sony A7RM IV on a tripod. Unluckily the first ferry came in, when I took some photos at the marina nearby. All the boats were swanking over the long exposure time. I have to check it out at the Mac if it all was for the trash. I had all weathers this morning. 2 degrees when I started with a clear night, later big clouds and at last rain. I visited several wonderful locations until 8 a.m. when I had to work for the rest of the day. Bit hard but also very inspiring and... I don*t do this every day... night jobs.

Enjoy, If you like low light photography and have Happy Eastern !
