Horsetail Fall in Yosemite National Park is illuminated by the setting moon. This backlit "firefall" phenomenon is well-known to occur at sunset in late February, but can also happen whenever the moon sets at the same angle. In addition to the correct moonset azimuth, the moon must be near full, must set at least one hour before sunrise, there can be no clouds obstructing the moonlight, and water must be flowing in the falls. A confluence of these conditions is very rare, ocurring perhaps only one night every two years. This image was made at approximately 4:45 AM on April 24, 2013. There was minimal water flowing, but it can be clearly seen moving in the timelapse footage I shot, of which 31 frames were used to create this image. Equivalent expoure length is approximately 9 minutes.

My artist friend, Donna, invited several of us to come witness a nocturnal spectacle last night: what is likely the final blossom for the season on this intriguing cereus plant. Here it was just beginning to open.
A member of the cactus family, flowers form seemingly at random points directly off its leaves. The blossoms flower only one night, and begin wilting by morning. Not only are they beautiful to see, but they're also highly fragrant.

It's a really poor show but I'm late with my entry and, having had some narrow escapes in the past, I don't like to go out with the camera at night when I'm alone.
I had hoped to take a photo of Comet Ison but that's probably not going to happen, even if it survives it's path through the Sun's atmosphere.
So, instead (sorry for my weak effort, Crawf), I just nipped into the garden, put the night light on and took a pic of the hanging tomatoes.
A late night passenger train speeds across the railway bridge between Benicia and Martinez, CA.
Ron and I hiked to this spot between the bridges and waited for the Amtrak train from Davis to Martinez. Meanwhile to the northeast, an electrical storm brewed over Sacramento as a nearly full moon rose from the eastern horizon. It was such an interesting night, it was hard to chose what to shoot.
The Benicia-Martinez Bridge consists of two automobile and a railroad bridge spanning the Carquinez Strait west of Suisun Bay. Between the two vehicle bridges is a railroad bridge owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. The railroad bridge was the first bridge at this location, built between April 1929 and October 1930 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. It is used by Union Pacific and BNSF (trackage rights) freight trains, as well as 36 scheduled Amtrak passenger trains each weekday. Passenger trains include the long-distance trains California Zephyr and Coast Starlight as well as Capitol Corridor inter-city commuter trains.(from Wikipedia)
