☾ “I have noticed that when all the lights are on, people tend to talk about what they are doing – their outer lives.

Sitting round in candlelight or firelight, people start to talk about how they are feeling – their inner lives. They speak subjectively, they argue less, there are longer pauses.

To sit alone without any electric light is curiously creative. I have my best ideas at dawn or at nightfall, but not if I switch on the lights – then I start thinking about projects, deadlines, demands, and the shadows and shapes of the house become objects, not suggestions, things that need to done, not a background to thought.”

Dragon at Night.

Dragon is a free-flying spacecraft designed to deliver both cargo and people to orbiting destinations. Dragon made history in 2012 when it became the first commercial spacecraft in history to deliver cargo to the International Space Station and safely return cargo to Earth, a feat previously achieved only by governments. It is the only spacecraft currently flying that is capable of returning significant amounts of cargo to Earth. Currently Dragon carries cargo to space, but it was designed from the beginning to carry humans. Under an agreement with NASA, SpaceX is now developing the refinements that will enable Dragon to fly crew. Dragon's first manned test flight is expected to take place in 2-3 years.

But late at night the feelings swim to the surface.

Cause on the surface the city lights shine,

They're calling at me, "come and find your kind."

Shortly after my first attempt on night photography which ended in heavy clouds and mist I gave it another try. I travelled 250 km that night to be lucky enough to find clear skies and perfect conditions on location. Only downside the temperatures were freezingly cold (-12 °C) which couldn't stop me from trying :-).

In the end, I was able to capture this shot at the German/Austrian border!

Using Roland's (A travers l'autre) idea in his note about the previous image "Night Vision".

The longer I look at this, the more I like it. Merci, Roland.

Guess this could count for another version of my "Get Pushed - Round 9".

The last night we spent on Long Beach was truly spectacular, and is one of the best photographic evenings I have spent in years. One attraction was the night surfers.

This image is pretty unique, as I took it the NIGHT of the first snowfall. This was taken at about 9:30 P.M., or some 4+ hours after sunset. The unique nature of low hanging clouds and fresh snow bounced the ambient light back and forth, so a longer exposure produced a very unique, surprisingly bright image not unlike a daytime image, except with beautifully diffused, soft light. This image has only minimal processing and is very similar to how the image came out of the camera. The color palette reminds me of vintage processes, with desaturated colors that have a naturally sepia tone and charm.
