The August Break, day twenty-one.

This giant swallowtail was perched atop a plant that I did not know at first. I have learned the flower is called brownfoot or pink perezia. During September 2018 in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

I think this one is called orange sulphur. I worked very hard to capture a shot of one with the wings fully open. When at rest, the sulphurs generally keep the wings folded so you only get a good look at the underside. For this one, I lucked into a shot just as it was flying in to land on the blue sage (aka blue salvia or cemetary sage) flowers. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas

First time I have observed this species at our Montell property beyond the period of migration. It seems we had some that nested and produced babies this year. I hope they decide to make a habit of this. In Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

Some beautiful spring wildflowers found along a country dirt road near Devine, Texas.

Peaches: loved by all creatures great and small.

I love these tiny little birds. Besides being very pretty, they generally are very curious and therefore will come out of the underbrush enough to have a photo or two taken. Also, they have a lovely, loud voice and a very recognizable song and call.

On frost weed flowers. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

Ladder-backed woodpeckers are residents at our property in Montell, Uvalde County. They have a high-pitched call that sounds like yip or whinny or at times as if they are laughing out loud. This is a female. The males have a bright red cap on top of the head.

This species of swallowtail butterfly is one I haven't seen often on our place. My photos just don't do justice to the brilliant beauty of these fluttering about among the wildflowers in our meadow. They definitely showed preference for the lavender flowers on the prairie verbena.

Lots of dragonflies graced my yard in Portland, Texas, during October 2017.

The rain gave plenty of opportunity to get shots of wet foliage. Things always look so clean and sparkly right after a rain.

I'm still not completely sure that I have made a correct ID on this one, but another birder has given me some tips to help me pin it down. Anyway, it was the first and only time I saw this bird and to my knowledge the first time I have seen this species. It posed nicely on some rusted barbed wire. In Montell, Uvalde County, during September 2018.

This little bird showed some attitude as it paused just long enough for me to capture a couple of shots. Cozumel, Mexico in April 2023

An American lady butterfly perched atop a wildflower commonly known as prairie verbena. Our meadow is full of wildflowers thanks to record rainfall during the past summer and fall months. The purple/lavender flowers of this plant currently are very attractive to butterflies.

I think this might be a female or immature rufous hummingbird but not sure. It was taking advantage of the zinnia nectar on a hot and dry summer day. July 2018 in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas

One of the wildflowers that is hardy enough to withstand the heat of summer. These generally bloom through the summer months and attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. The flowers form clusters at the top of the tall lanky plants and are a pale pinkish white.

A winter visitor to our meadow in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas. A curious, yet somewhat shy, hermit thrust with its beautiful spotted breast and lovely song.

Southern dogface butterfly with open wings on scarlet muskflower (aka Devil's bouquet) - the sulfur butterflies, such as this species, tend to perch with wings closed so to get a dorsal view you need to have good timing and good luck enough to catch it in flight. It was my lucky day. In September 2018, Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

American robin standing in the green grass. Probably looking for bugs and worms. Montell, Uvalde County, Texas.

Rarely do these tiny birds stay in one spot long enough for a good shot. This little guy came and posed very nicely for me. Super cute little one. In Montell, Uvalde County.

Love this time of year.

Butterfly seen in Montell, Uvalde County, Texas during November 2017. Sachem is one of the skipper butterfly species. This one on the white flowers of frostweed.

Typical of vireos, the Bell's vireo is very small and flits about in quick, darting movements as it forages for small insects and spiders among the foliage. They can be quite loud for such a small bird and are often heard before seen (if you can even find it at all). They can be elusive, preferring dense shrubs and grassy areas. Grayish with pale yellow and a buzzy squeaky call/song.

A large orange sulphur (tentative ID) and a lyside sulphur vying for space on the same small zinnia. In Montell, Uvalde County Texas.

One of the few times I actually got a shot of a sulphur with the wings open. It seems they always rest with wings folded so I have to try and capture a flight shot.

Oh, I wish Flickr came in Smell-o-Vision, because these magnolias smelt DIVINE. I love magnolias...it's the Southern belle in me, I think!

Record rains through parts of Texas during late summer and early fall of 2018 created ideal opportunities for fungi to develop. I don't know the correct species names but gave them descriptive titles, when possible. Some of them are beyond describing but are just weird and fascinating.

Various places in South and Southwest Texas during 2018.

Smaller relative of the American goldfinch, the adult male has a black back with with wing markings. Females are yellow with olive upper parts. Quite common around our property, especially if you put up some seed feeders or turn on a water sprinkler.
