Named for its conspicuous target-shaped eyespots, the common buckeye, Junonia coenia Huber, is one of the most distinctive and readily-identifiable North American butterflies. It inhabits a wide variety of open, sunny landscapes including old fields, roadsides, utility corridors, gardens, parks, yards, fallow agricultural land, scrubs, pine savannas, and weedlots. (entnemdept.ufl.edu) Saw this lovely butterfly in Lake Forest, California!

The name Levante either comes from the first major tenant of the business premises, the Deutsche Levante Schifffahrts-Linie (German Levant Shipping Line), or is generally based on the historical orientation of the house, which had shipping companies as tenants that traded with the eastern Mediterranean, the "Orient". From 1995 to 1997, the office building was converted into a shopping arcade and a 5-star hotel.

Red Kite

Irish Name:Cúr Rua / Préachán na gCearcScientific name:Milvus milvusBird Family:Raptors

AMBER

CONSERVATION STATUS

Status

A resident, reintroduced population is slowly expanding from its core range in Cos. Wicklow, Dublin and Down.

Identification

An elegant, graceful bird of prey, larger than a Buzzard, with long wings and a long distinctly forked tail. The body is reddish-brown with dark streaking, the head is greyish and the tail, which is often twisted continually in flight, is orange-red. Viewed from below, the black, fingered wingtips and contrasting white patch on the outer flight feathers stand out. As with most birds of prey, the female is larger than the male. Juveniles look somewhat duller than adults, with less distinct streaking and a thin white line on the upperwing. Many of the Red Kites seen in Ireland bear coloured plastic identification tags on their wings.

Voice

A shrill, mewing 'peee-ooow'.

Diet

Mainly eats carrion, including roadkill, preferring to scavenge rather than hunt. They will happily take live prey if necessary, however, including rats, mice, rabbits pigeons, young crows and even earthworms and other invertebrates.

Breeding

Breeding is currently still confined to the east coast, close to the original reintroduction sites in Cos. Wicklow, Dublin and Down. The nest consists of a large platform of twigs, usually constructed high above the ground in the fork of a deciduous tree branch. Red Kites have the curious habit of decorating their nests with scavenged human items, especially plastic bags, items of clothing (especially underwear!) and even children's toys. 1 to 3 eggs are incubated, mainly by the female, for around 31 days, and the chicks are cared for by both parents.

Wintering

Resident throughout its range. Likes to gather in winter roosting flocks, the largest and best-known of which is close to the village of Avoca in Co. Wicklow, a very reliable site for this species.

Monitored by

Countryside Bird Survey

Reintroduced in 2011. Resident, roaming but not wide-ranging.

Roaming further afield in Winter, turning up in Western counties.

The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is most probably called after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. There are several churches dedicated to Donan in the area and it is likely that he formed a small cell or community on the island during the late 7th century.

Eilean Donan ruin

The first fortified structure was not built on the island until the early 13th century as a defensive measure, protecting the lands of Kintail against the Vikings who raided, settled and controlled much of the North of Scotland and the Western Isles between 800 and 1266. From the mid 13th century, this area was the quite seperate “Sea Kingdom” of the Lord of the Isles where the sea was the main highway and the power of feuding clan chiefs was counted by the number of men and galleys or “birlinns” at their disposal. Eilean Donan offered the perfect defensive position.

Over the centuries, the castle itself has expanded and contracted in size. The medieval castle was probably the largest, with towers and a curtain wall that encompassed nearly the entire island. The main keep stood on the island’s highest point. Around the end of the 14th century the area of the castle was reduced to about a fifth of its original size and, although the reason is unclear, it probably relates to the number of men required to defend the structure. By the 16th century a hornwork was added to the east wall to offer a firing platform for the newly introduced cannons.Eilean Donan - cannon balls

Eilean Donan also played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries, which ultimately culminated in the castle’s destruction…

In 1719 the castle was garrisoned by 46 Spanish soldiers who were supporting the Jacobites. They had established a magazine of gunpowder, and were awaiting the delivery of weapons and cannon from Spain. The English Government caught wind of the intended uprising and sent three heavily armed frigates The Flamborough, The Worcester, and The Enterprise to quell matters. The bombardment of the castle lasted three days, though met with limited success due to the enormity of the castle walls, which in some places are up to 14 feet thick. Finally, Captain Herdman of The Enterprise sent his men ashore and over-whelmed the Spanish defenders. Following the surrender, the government troops discovered the magazine of 343 barrels of gunpowder which was then used to blow up what had remained from the bombardment…

For the best part of 200 years, the stark ruins of Eilean Donan lay neglected, abandoned and open to the elements, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. Along with his Clerk of Works, Farquar Macrae, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan, restoring her to her former glory. The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932.

'No,' said the cat. 'Now you people have names. That's because you don't know who you are. We know who we are, so we don't need names.”

The Palazzo Vecchio ("Old Palace") is the town hall of Florence, Italy. It overlooks the Piazza della Signoria with its copy of Michelangelo's David statue as well as the gallery of statues in the adjacent Loggia dei Lanzi.

Originally called the Palazzo della Signoria, after the Signoria of Florence, the ruling body of the Republic of Florence, it was also given several other names: Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo dei Priori, and Palazzo Ducale, in accordance with the varying use of the palace during its long history. The building acquired its current name when the Medici duke's residence was moved across the Arno to the Palazzo Pitti.

In 1299, the comune and people of Florence decided to build a palace that would be worthy of the city's importance, and that would be more secure and defensible in times of turbulence for the magistrates of the commune. Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect of the Duomo and the Santa Croce church, began construction upon the ruins of Palazzo dei Fanti and Palazzo dell'Esecutore di Giustizia, once owned by the Uberti family. Giovanni Villani (1276–1348) wrote in his Nuova Cronica that the Uberti were "rebels of Florence and Ghibellines", stating that the palazzo was built to ensure that the Uberti family homes would never be rebuilt on the same location.

The name of this dahlia is the RYAN C. It was introduced in 1991. This beauty is about 7" in diameter and the color is a velvety purple with white tips. As is true with some bi-colors, this variety bounces back and forth from bi-color to solid. This was another Dahlia that was blooming in the Dahlia gardens at “Garden by The Sea” in Fort Bragg, CA.
