It is time for a new project and as I don’t have a trip coming up for a while, I researched ideas for photo story ideas. There are many amazing suggestions, a lot that I have already done, but definitely one I have never done - and consequently, the one that scares me the most. Self Portrait Story. Not one to ever like my own photo, especially as I see myself aging, I figured this would be a challenge for me. Here goes…. Today is Self Portrait 1. Taken on my Zen deck with end of season hydrangeas.

Cliff Side Black Bear

Moving on from Elderberry was a little bittersweet as I could’ve observed her all day, but it was time to move on for the rest of our day. We’d only moved a little ways down from our last spot and wouldn’t you know, a FOURTH black bear! This one literally climbing along the rick cliff about 40 feet above the water.

Fern “Trees”

Len and I ventured down to our lower acreage yesterday to survey how many trees went down on that huge windstorm last month. We don’t usually head down when it’s quite wet, but we’re able to safely get down on the side by side. We had many large trees down, some that will become firewood and others millable for use in fences, etc. Luckily no trees fell on our roads or paths, which was good. It is amazing to see this symbiotic forest of our property. I love the way the forest grows itself.

So many wonderful things to discover when shooting macro photography. Not only are backgrounds soft and pastel, but you look into the magical parts of flowers. This shot highlights the “stigmas” that rest on the top of the stamen and are an integral part of the reproduction of fruit tree blossoms.

From Green to Pink

I think what I love the most about auroras near my place are the changing colours depending on what gases are present in our atmosphere when the charged light particles (photons) react with them. Green is emitted when reacting with nitrogen and reds when reacting with monatomic oxygen. The colours also depend on what latitudes the lights are seen. Interesting, eh? Oh and there is One Perseid meteor in the shot…

While this is not one of my favourite photos, it does spark my drive to keep trying to get that perfect Milky Way shot. There is something about the depths of night skies that calls me in. This shot was actually a quick fluke while we were out searching for Neowise one night back in 2020. It is off a back logging road that crosses a major highway. The bright lights behind on the horizon were from Port Alberni.

Grizzlies 5.5

A few hundred yards over from the mum and cubs were two more bears nestled deep up next to the forest. This mama shielded her small cub so much it was hard to see she was there. This was the only shot I was able to get even with the 600mm lens.

Sometimes you see grizzlies but only their rear ends. Deep in Glendale Cove, we came upon this Mama Bear and her two cubs. Unfortunately, it was hard to see more as we were deep behind sedge and I was on the lower deck of the skiff.
